To those with excellent battery life - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6

And updated play and push services
Did yall turn off volte and WiFi calling?

Yes

No

Hmm

Not sure

Lol. Most informative thread ever!
I turned off volte and Wi-Fi calling to avoid the cell stand by battery drain bug.

Not an informative thread it's a question

Oh so high cell radio active is normal?

No. It shouldn't be on your top 3 unless you unplug the phone and don't touch it for hours or if you're in an area with terrible reception

Yeah terrible signal here

volte on, wifi calling off, strong signal, good battery life

No idle drain?

about 10% overnight, over about 8 hours, so very acceptable, to me..

I can squeeze 1.5 days standby and 4.5 hours SOT with wifi calling & VoLTE disabled, a strong signal, Google Play Services 7.3.29 (440) and Samsung Push service disabled. Cell radio is not even on the list. I froze all bloatware and use Francisco Franco's Servicely app to restrict all user installed apps except root-enabled apps. Google Play Services still spends waaaay too much time hogging my CPU & connection. The last time I checked overnight drain it was <3%.

Can someone please shed some light on VoLTE? I thought it was a technology that goes beyond just "HD" voice, and that it allows you to send files while still on the call?

I don't care about connecting to the other person faster. Nor do I care all that much about HD voice. However, I do like to send files like photos to the other person while speaking with them. And from what I gather, volte allows you to talk while sending and receiving "other data" likes files. Is that right? If that's the case, I'd like to keep volte on because that comes in handy. If not, I'd prefer to turn it off and save battery.

Honestly, just google it and read for yourself. GSM carriers have been able to text or send messages and files while on a phone call for ages now, that's nothing new.

Hangouts Voice Call Using Data Discussion

Google finally updated Hangouts app and added new app Hangouts dialer that allows one to make regular phones calls using data.
Let's discuss Nexus 4 related experiences here.
Voice quality wise, this is the best quality among 10+ VOIP solutions. I have tried many in the last 2 years using N4. The quality is great on LTE 4g,
However, I noticed a slight more lag when doing an echo test at 909-390-0003 especially on LTE.
Another nice new feature is to voice call (not video call) to Hangouts contacts. This doesn't rely on PTSN (regular phone network) so the quality is superior.
Big fan of the product as well. Was going to hold onto Vonage as my long distance calling app, but they recently hiked the prices of their international rates for the country I was interested in, so I deleted the app entirely.
One question/area of interest
The thread listed here states that data consumption for the user was approximately 1.6MB/hr, whereas in my experiences, I encounter data consumption of approx. 690KB/s (25 times greater). Being I don’t talk a lot on the phone anyways, those numbers are not worrisome in the slightest to me, but I am curious what the reason could be for the discrepancy.
One potential theory that I have is that my calls were long distance perhaps? Calls routed overseas to a non-Google Hangout # requires larger data packets perhaps?
1.6 MB/hr is unrealistic low (just can't compress the stream that much). I recommend using WiFi for hangouts unless you have an unlimited plan.
Justin
It (google voice) is working fantastic for me! I could never get any of the other google voice apps from google or 3rd party vendors to work. Now it works awesome over my WiFi.

I made two calls over wifi totaling 9 minutes. Google settings measured hangouts data usage increasing by 2.8MB during those calls. FWIW. Twice I heard a slight momentary digitization of the other caller's voice lasting about a second each time.
I wonder if Google scales the audio quality based on the speed of your connection the way netflix/amazon automatically scales video quality. If you have a super fast connection, maybe they crank up quality. Maybe that digitization I heard wasn't a general issue, but a glitch while audio was readjusting bitrate, the way a video might fuzz for a second in between adjustments.

Now that I think about it, that is a feature of Google Hangout Video calls. You have to be in a call to be able to tweak the settings, but you have the option to alter the rate of data consumption through various tiers of video quality. It wouldn't be too far fetched to have something similar in the phone app related to voice I suppose.
Not too sure if that would explain my personal data consumption though. I was using a WiMax Router through FreedomPop which is 4G but it is no Google Fiber.
T-mo $30 plan + Nexus 4 + Hangouts + 4G LTE = bliss!
Just trying to see if its rom/kernel related or just a intitial kink with a new product.
But when I receive an incoming call to hangouts - after hitting accept I am experiencing a 3-5 second delay before I can actually talk or hear the other person.
Anyone else experiencing this?

I've experienced a lag/freeze when I answer incoming calls as well. If I don't get it on like the first or second ring then the caller goes to voicemail as I wait for the lag to disappear. Hopefully it is something they fix in the future. Not a huge deal since I can still call people back for free with great quality.

Oh ok thanks for the response - definitely not a deal breaker.. The call quality is great, I even had a conversation driving down the road doing 50.., was impressed.
I haven't taken an incoming call with it yet, but that sounds like the sort of issue that Google could and would likely address. You might look around for a bug report you can upvote. Or reviews of the app highlighting the issue.

Just as an update, today I called out again over the same wifi with a similar signal for 6 minutes and used 4.7MB. Whatever the cause (I'm not sure either), the data usage is highly variable. I wish we could at least cap it. Even with some paygo data, this could be cheaper than some paygo minutes... or not, depending on whether you're getting 0.3MB/min (2-3c/min at 7 to 10 cents per MB, typical mvno paygo data), 0.8MB/min (6-8c/min) or 40MB/min ($2.80-$4.00/min) like macallik reported.
This is certainly fine for either supplemental wifi use to slice down a bill a bit, or for use with generous data buckets like the much celebrated tmo package, but without the ability to control or cap the data rate, it's still a bit limited. With just that one tweak, I could see using it as a dedicated second line through hangouts, and even on a paygo account, you could save even when you weren't on wifi, and far moreso over wifi. It'd be like having a dual sim phone, but cheaper and with less account management hassle.

Just thought about it. Did you/do you have call screening on when you used Google Voice previously? (Where you have to press '1' to answer an incoming call) That could be leading to the freezing as Hangouts attempts to get a button prompt from a feature that is no longer being used. I just disabled my call screening on the Google Voice website but haven't gotten any recent incoming calls to test my theory.

Oh man I never knew that was a feature. What a pain in the ass, I've been living with it for a long time now...
As someone who has their number ported to gvoice, this is a great change. but, my phone rings twice, at the same time with two different ring tones by two dialers. It's confusing and annoying because each dialer tried to override the screen of the other one to get your attention.

That is also something you can change in the settings @ the Google voice website. Change the call forwarding portion. Mines is set to 'none' with no boxes checked but you might need to play around with it a bit (that's what she said)
Because my plan doesn't dock me for incoming calls I let the forwarding come in through the old mobile voice network. But outgoing calls are routed through my Hangouts dialer.

I' ve used here in brazil for the first time, over wifi, calling other state to a house number and the result was 15 minutes of calling and 10,43 mb used by hangouts.
An average 695 kbs/min. I think its not bad at all.
UPDATE:
Today i've called the same number and the conversation went for 37 minutes, using 25,71 mb of wifi data.
The average was 695 kb/min again , this means that an 0,1 Mbits/s conection should be good to make the call without hiccups. So even here in brazil with our poor 1 Mbits/s 3g we can use this service for good, thus saving a lot of money.
Hey guys, I had just purchased some credit to try hangouts in germany I have one slight problem though. My ID is hidden when calling someone, I have confirmed my number in the app itself, anything else to do?

If Verizon, who has sent the N6 back in hopes to buy later when...

Not sure if this affect others but with Verizon not having the Advance Call 1.0 is becoming harder for me to live without... Plus I am on 3G only although there are some VZW N6 users who get LTE but I still don't think they can talk and use data together?
So coming from a wonderful rooted Note 3 on VZW, I am an IT Engineer and travel a lot for my job. With the Note 3, I
>> Travel and use device for GPS solely. But using other data phone activities while GPS is active
>> When traveling I need to answer support calls if a server goes down and this can be while driving using GPS. If so then I need voice, data & GPS
>> Long conference calls avg time 1 hr so to be able to use web, text, data while on a call is a need. Many times i am traveling not sitting at a desk need phone
I adore the N6 have it rooted and works well but today another day of travel I was using GPS but needed web to find product info, can't. Also recently was on a long business conf call and wife texted a urgent question but could not send a text back due to being on a bus call, etc. etc.. Same happened once when I was on GPS and text would not send...thought that was strange
I want to keep the phone but the need for production is weighing heavy on me and I did not realize how import LTE or I should say Advance Call 1.0 was important and needed for my day to day business & job
Any of you in this boat where the N6 is great but being early adopters is killing your need for voice and data both together?
My assumption this is a VZW only issue and not for other carriers they can do both together?
Has anyone refunded their N6 and just keeping a watch on how the N6 progress?
Hope soon VZW will add Advance Call for N6 or someone can cook it in a rom but curious of others thoughts who may be in a similar pinch?
I don't think there will be carrier specific updates. I think Google will enable this and WiFi calling in February with the 5.1 update.

"'In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." so with that being said we may never know until its released. I have seen it mentioned on here several times with regards to WiFi calling, so one can assume that VoLTE will follow suit.

How are those making it without Advance Calling

Think this only a VZW issue. I have my old Note 3 that I go back and forth between with my N6. If you are a busy person not just playing on the phone really using it for travel with GPS, email with exchange, busy with calls, etc. etc how are you all making it without Advance Calling to handle data and voice at the same time?
For me driving long hours using Google Maps and talking not able to look new address while on call and handle data is a killer...same with long conference calls and needing to send emails while on call or look up data via browser, dropbox, evernotes, etc and daily support stuff I do on my phone. So for time being I switch sims back and forth (have a nano to micro sim adapter) to my Note 3 more on it right now vs N6.
Thoughts?
yup, verizon issue(maybe sprint issue as well). im on tmobile, and have had voice and data at the same time since at least 2004, when i joined tmobile. even now, without volte. during a call, it swirches to hspa+ from lte(no calls through lte). and get high speed data, while on a phone call. but ill be honest, its really rare that i need the data while im on a phine call
May be a Verizon issue. ATT has no problem either. I make calls and use data all the time. One of the reasons I switched from Verizon many years ago before they added the functionality
Not sure I have ever used it. Not sure why you don't use a laptop... Superior in pretty much every imaginable way to a phone to actually get work done. I guess I work for a financial institution, so we don't use consumer stuff like Dropbox for data, and even if we did, a phone screen would be more trouble to use than its worth. And in my personal life, I'm a gringo middle aged dad...I use maybe 20 minutes a month, lol. So the reason it gets delayed is because most people have no use for it, or frankly never really thought about the fact that they can't do it.
I am a cable guy and believe me or not, the n6 is my daily driver. I had spent hours doing research to make sure that it would be a solid phone but it's hard to find a post about something that isn't supported yet. So I blindly traded my note 4 for a nexus 6. Still the best decision I've made all year.
I require a data connection 150% of the time. I also spend a lot of time on the phone, calling Comcast or my dispatch. The often ask for info that I can only reach with a data connection. Luckily, I have a lg gpad 8.3 lte that I use for that access but it's still very aggravating not being able to do that at all. It slows down my work a lot
I am on verizon and this really isn't a problem. I assume you have a Google voice account. You can make voip calls from within hangouts now. If your going to be on a call where you also need data just use the hangouts dialer. Problem solved.

Yeah, but that charges the call over data against your data cap... If Verizon would take Hangouts data and exclude it from your data cap, then I'd be all for this solution. Otherwise, Verizon needs to simply enable IMS VoLTE support, so that any Lollipop device can have VoLTE!
That's true but the amount of data those calls use is pretty negligible IMO.
Thanks all these are all great replies good feedback. Being so mobile my phone is always with me and just easier with a BTW headset look at phone and do task while on a call but seeing N6 now will have to wait.
I do have a cellular Samsung Note 10.1 tablet I never carry so to one person point I guess I will travel and carry it more just hate the extra load
Sent from mobile...excuse typos!
Has anyone with another device on their account (perhaps a Turbo) tried switching lines, enabling Advanced calling, and then switching back to see if this would actually work? My wife has a Turbo, so I'm tempted to try it out, but wanted to see if anyone else had already tried.
Im going to be buying a new device and i want one that i can unlock the bootloader and root and so far the nexus 6 is what im leaning towards. I currently have the vzw Lg g3 and love it, im gonna be keeping my G3 as a backup. I also like the note 4 but the bootloader unlock is a no go as far as i know. I also like playing modern combat on my g3 without any lagging. Which device would you suggest and why. I just wanna be 100% before i pay out the @SS for a phone. Help me make up my mind. Thank ya

To All with S6/S6 Edge and AT&T Microcell Issues

Background:
I've been a long time AT&T wireless user and prior to owning the GS6, I've had an HTC One (m7). I've had poor reception at my house for as long as I remember, so I've been using the Microcell for a some time. With the HTC One (m7), there has not been a single problem, and that holds true with every other phone in the house (iPhone 5S, OnePlus One, Galaxy S4). However, ever since switching to the GS6 around the time when it was first released, I've had nothing but problems with the pair. To clarify, the GS6 has no issues initially connecting to the Microcell, but intermittently, the GS6 will disconnect from the Microcell and will not immediately switch to AT&T's tower, if at all. For me, I have seen it occurring upwards of 20 times a day, but your mileage may vary. I've been in contact with AT&T since early May 2015, and they've had me perform all the troubleshooting that they have, including turning off Enhanced 4G LTE services (HD voice) on the phone and on the account, disabling hand-off from the Microcell, turning off mobile data, using other phones to confirm the status of the Microcell during issues on the GS6, factory reset, and more. I've also gone through 3 GS6's, 3 SIM cards, and 2 Microcells through warranty replacements, and still no luck. After confirming no solution with the latest GS6 and SIM card replacements, AT&T has taken my case (and will potentially yours) to the next step, but this is where your action will help escalate this to a potential fix.
Current action:
AT&T has already investigated the case and cannot find a solution on their end, so they have escalated my case to a 'trend', meaning that they see multiple users having the same issue, but they need more people to take this 'trend' directly to Samsung for a resolution. As of today, June 24, 2015, my case is a 'trend', so whoever has an issue with your GS6 or S6 Edge and your Microcell should call AT&T's case management team to contribute to the 'trend' to take this to Samsung. Listed here, I will put my case number as a point of reference, in the case that whoever you speak to has no idea what 'trend' to look for (though I am unsure if you need my personal information as confirmation).
Case #CM20150624_104015612
AT&T Case Management Team: (877) 971-5016
This phone number is a direct line of communication to AT&T's Case Management Team, and to get the most out of your call, ask to speak directly to a supervisor, and if need be, reference my case number for the 'trend'. The last supervisor I spoke to is Brandon Ranken (spelling on last name?), so he should be familiar with the 'trend'.
tl;dr: If you or anyone you know has an issue with the GS6 or S6 Edge intermittently disconnecting from the AT&T Microcell, please call AT&T's Case Management Team at (877) 971-5016. The Microcell and S6 issues are currently trending at AT&T's Case Management, so your help to contribute to the 'trend' will help escalate the issue directly to Samsung for a potential fix. It should be easiest to ask to speak directly to a supervisor, but ymmv.
Edit: New phone number for case management team: (866) 986-0965
Interesting that you posted this. My S6 is actually better than my previous phone (LG optimus G) on my microcell. S6 connects reliably, except immediately after a reboot. The LGOG dumped it's microcell connection every night while I slept.
I want to clarify that connecting to the Microcell is seamless, even with my GS6. The issue is that when connected, intermittently I would experience a loss of network, but it isn't entirely reflected accurately in the status bar of the phone. I would consider myself a heavy user with in- and outgoing calls and texts frequently, but the issue doesn't appear as if the phone is normally in a low-signal state. It also doesn't "disconnect" from the Microcell, per se, but instead it looks as though it is connected, but nothing is in- or outbound. It is difficult to explain, because it is not working as it should.
I am within 5 to 10 feet of the Microcell for most times when I am home, and I do see AT&T Microcell up at the top left as my provider. I also see that I have full signal, which looks normal, but that is where the problem lies. I would then place a call or send a text, and seconds later, the signal drops all the way down to 1 or 0 bars. I then look into the phone's status in the settings to look at the 'signal strength', and I see the strength bouncing between -50 dBm and -120 dBm with 0 asu. Honestly, I don't entirely know what all those entirely mean, but I do have a general gist of it. During this time, whatever text messages or phone calls I am trying to make will not go through, and it takes a good amount of time before it either fixes itself or it jumps to an AT&T tower.
Now to clarify again, this does not happen 100% of the time that I am home, but it has affected all 3 GS6's, 3 SIM cards, and 2 Microcells that I have had here. I am satisfied when I do have a connection, and I can say that I do have a connection ~90% of the time (very rough % figure). This is an issue no other phone in the house experiences, and I have tested other phones during the time the GS6 is out, and have concluded that only the GS6 is affected by this issue in my home (of the phones assigned to the Microcell).
The biggest issue I'm having with my microcell is sending MMS over it from my S6.
I just set up a microcell 3 days ago, so it is too early to tell, but so far I have not had any issues. It is working quite well both on my s6 and my wife's iphone 6. I'm sure you have gone through all the troubleshooting steps, but might there be something causing intermittent interference, like a microwave oven? Also do you have the most current model of the microcell, which I think is DPH154?
I spoke too soon. I was on a conference call this morning and it disconnected twice during the call.
Wow, thanks for this thread! Was on microcell call on my s6 active and dropped 5 times. Then dropped 30 seconds into another call. Then dropped about 8-10 minutes into yet another call. I will call the case management team tomorrow. What a bummer as I will probably have to return the phone before 14 buyers remorse period now. Loving this s6 active.
On a side note, have most of you purchased your microcells or were they given to you for free by AT&T due to poor coverage?
Just out of curiosity, do any of you using an S6 Active (or a regular S6) have higher battery drain on your S6 while connected (either in standby or not) to a MicroCell? I returned my S6 Active due to it draining 3 to 4% per hour on standby. If people are having "connection" problems with S6's and MicroCells, this might have been what was draining my battery.

My cell standby was biggest battery drain today at 18%. Was home most of the day. Screen at 12% battery use with 2hrs 40mins sot. Something isn't right it seems.

I do get higher idle drain at home, but I was attributing it to Wi-Fi. Haven't had a good opportunity to chase it down, but now will have to consider the microcell as well.
Quick search results suggest turning off WiFi scanning and hd voice to improve cell standby drain. Not sure about microcell but will monitor it through the weekend. Only day two of ownership for me after replacing an lg g4 with touch screen issues.

Yeah, I did all of that including clearing the phone's cache. Still drained at an unacceptable level. To compare, my Nexus 5 connected to my MicroCell only drains 1 to 1.8% per hour on standby (with location on). My Active drained 3 to 4% on similar settings (location off). Has to be the way the radio in the Active was connecting to my MicroCell. If there was a "fix" for this, I'd re-buy the Active as it is the best phone available right now.
Called in to report microcell issue, call dropped multiple times so I had to walk away from house to get on network and drop microcell signal. My issue was added to the "trend" and now I have to return the s6 active. So bummed, what a great phone!

No problem! I certainly hope that a resolution is found eventually. Unfortunately, I've had the phone for too long so I cannot return the phone anymore. I have to rely on Samsung to make some kind of fix or workaround.

What about a workaround like using Google voice and dialer from home? Essentially using WiFi calling and bypassing the microcell. Doesn't help for incoming calls, I know. I get about one bar inside my home without MC and can go outside for two bars or more.
Edit: you can forward carrier number to ring Google voice but requires a real commitment to the GV ecosystem.

I've certainly thought about using that workaround, and for some contacts, I have switched to using GV for texts, but it still isn't close enough to a fix than I would have hoped. It is quite a shame because I do love the phone, but it is failing me as an actual phone while I am home. But I do spend a substantial amount of time away from home, so I do prefer using my actual number.
I have this problem. First the s6 signal strength is not the greatest. It works poorly in my home, while other phones (LG G2, Z3C) do fine. So i got a microcell. The S6 faithfully drops phone calls in the 20 - 60 minute range while others (iphones etc.) do not. It really bums me out because the camera is killer and i need a fingerprint scanner. I think the signal strength on the phone is just too weak.
I am actually considering switching carriers over it.
I called the AT&T management team, reached an engineer, didn't ask for supervisor, however the woman who answered was very helpful. I told her this was part of a trend. Anyway, she told me to go to best buy and have them do a smartflash. She also said to make sure my pictures and contacts were saved. I went to best buy - they had me talk to in house Samsung rep. He did the smartflash, took less than 15 minutes. - no cost. This was done tuesday afternoon, so far no lost connectivity. It's been over 24 hrs. Before I would lose connectivity at least 10-15x a day.
This has seemed to work so far for me.

On a side note, have most of you purchased your microcells or were they given to you for free by AT&T due to poor coverage?

I purchased the microcell, but was given the same amount of credit on my at&t bill.

Weak Data Speed When In A Call?

Lately I've noticed that when I am in active call (standard one, not with an app that's using internet) my data speed get nasty slow - 0.300mbps... Right after I end the call my speed immediately jumps to 18mbps on 3G. I am using 3G, no need for 4G and saves battery... I test the speed with the speedtest app. So can you check if you have the same problem like me?

Pretty stupid question... Put your call on speaker mode, and do what you want with your phone... Browsing the internet, apps... Sometimes you need to check something for the person on the other half... You need fast internet. But I found the reason, it's from the carrier I am on... Many people discovered the same thing after I posted on local forum...

Maybe if you had someone to call to and talk longer you would not find it stupid...
