So I thought my FRF91 had issues but now I'm thinking it's heat.
I was using FRF91 with Google Maps Navigation plugged into a cheap eBay car charger.
Within 20-30 seconds of running Navigation, the phone would reboot.
I did this 3 times in a row, and it would reboot.
I went back to FRF85B, and all was well.
Then I was thinking, the phone was pretty hot when this happened, I checked *#*#INFO#*#* and on FRF91 when it rebooted it was like 38C!!!
(Also on FRF85B, the Temp was in F and not C... weird).
Anyways, today I was driving around back on FRF91 and it crashed again (not plugged in) but was sitting on the dash and it got hot.
So anyone know, is FRF91 pretty sensitive to heat that it would reboot if it goes over a certain temp?
Anyone using a "brand" name car charger? Does your phone heat up?
I have a Belkin charger, and when using Navigation you could almost fry an egg on the thing.
same, i typically use nav and stream music in the N1 car dock, thing gets damn hot. wondering if i should put some sort of shade around it on the top ...

I don't know if this would be of any help, but since FRF91, when i charge my phone over USB (plugged on the computer), my phone gets auround 41°/42° C.
For information, it happens on MCR21 with default kernel, and just by letting the phone charging with screen on.
And since there, no reboot at all.
So i'm not sure your reboot prob would be heat related
If I'm running something heavy while charging on the car, I at least point the vent to it and turn it up to blow a good amount of air on it.. If it's hot, I'll go ahead and turn on the AC.
Kinda sucks gas milage, as I almost never use AC otherwise, but keeps the phone cool.
Anyone else have reboot with heat issues? I'm right now listening to podcast, and charging my phone and bam it reboots, then within 2 minutes it reboots again.
I check the temp and it's 38C. I pop out the battery and it's not even warm!!!!! The phone itself was hot. I unplug it and within 2 minutes the temp calls down to 35C.
Anyone got any ideas? This is all stock ATT Nexus One FRF91.
Pretty useless if I can't use the dang phone when it's charging.

Ok good its not only me that noticed the heating issue..charging my phone it gets bananas and using the net is bad as well..going back to 85b
I'm having the exact same issue. Every time my phone gets even a little bit hot, it reboots itself. Maybe it's an issue with the ATT/Rogers N1 specifically, since the only people I've seen who have the problem are on those phones.
Same issue here. Was driving back up to CT from D.C. yesterday and the phone reboot during Google Navigation use.
Funny thing is, when I used it last week to drive down there for the holiday, there were no issues.
Could it have been the fact that it was scorching hot even with the AC running?

Yesterday I'm trying to use sat nav without charging in the car, yes it was hot to touch
but never reboots, I'm also on FRF91.
But I think if the battery didn't die first it would reboot due its high temp.
I think what we experienced here is result of constant high usage of data + gps

No I have the Tmobile version (i'm using WIND) and it get mad hot..Through charging and anything net related (i only use wifi). As well connected to usb (obviously since it also charges).
My Nexus gets broiling hot when charging in "USB" mode - which you will get plugged into a USB port OR plugged into almost any non-HTC charger. Basically, it limits it to ~450ma draw, and I imagine that HTC didn't engineer this well and some wasted current just gets shunted as heat. This does NOT happen when charging in "AC" mode off of the HTC charger.
That waste heat may be a really stupid engineering problem, BUT, I've had my phone overclocked, plugged in to a 2A charger brick, but in USB mode, incredibly hot to the touch and showing 43deg or more while running graphics benchmarks or games, and I've never seen a problem. If "only" 38deg is giving you heat-related issues, that seems like a defect, and I'd look to get a warranty replacement before the board dies.

completely agree but whats funny as the heat issue never happened with froyo 50-85
Hmmm. My problem is not simply the heat, but the fact that the slightest bit of heat seems to cause my N1 to reboot itself. Anyone having similar issues, or perhaps suggestions on what I can do? I've unlocked my bootloader, but I'm running stock firmware. Hopefully this isn't a hardware issue

This absolutely does not happen. The charge is limited by the power supply, the phone is pretty much "blind" to the source. A more likely cause is the phone is TRYING to pull the .5A of charge and only getting .45A, causing to attempt to compensate and thus running more inefficiently. Also, as far as heat goes, do you turn the screen off out leaver out on while charging the device?

I sincerely hope that you meant to say that this absolutely does not happen to YOU.
There's been a ton about this, on this forum. There are two pins in the USB connection that, if they are open (like on a computer or with most chargers), cause the Nexus to see itself in "USB" mode, and to not draw more than ~.45-.50A. If those two pins are shorted, you get "AC" mode, and the phone will take up to about 1A.
I use several different bricks with the Nexus (iPhone brick - [email protected], iPad brick - spec'd as 10watt, several different thrid-party AC/USB bricks - all between 1.6 and 2.0A @ 5V, Milestone charger .9A @ 5.9v) and get the same story out of all of them - USB mode and a hot phone (36-38C with the screen off and the phone relatively inactive) during charging. I've never had the slightest performance problem, so I don't worry about it. If I use stock the N1 charger OR one other off-brand (so off-brand that there is nothing useful written on the case other than 2.0A @ 5V) charger, I get "AC" mode - where the phone accepts about .95A @5V, and does NOT get hot (32-34C during charge). This has been consistent with Eclair (stock and several Cyanogens) and every version of Froyo (FRF50, FRF83, FRF85B and FRF91).
My old BB Bold 9000 pulled over 1.5A @ 5V out of all of the 2A chargers that I have - it would fully charge in under an hour without getting hot. My wife's Curve 8900 charges fast as well - so I know that the chargers can do it. It's just the HTC hardware that limits the draw.
I say HTC, because I have confirmed the EXACT SAME behavior on a friend's HTC Desire. He was wondering why it took him all day to charge the phone off of a non-HTC power brick.
The phone is ABSOLUTELY not blind in this - it is the one drawing the current. I suspect that the USB-mode draw is just poorly done (at least on some phones), and there there is some leak. Maybe a specific hardware revision?

That is weird, because it definitely did happen to me (using a plethora of different kernels and speeds). Are you running anything else non-stock (kernel, OC, UV, etc.) that you were not running before?

The only other froyo i've used was Kang o rama (85B) which doesnt heat up for me..as soon as i put in any froyo 91 in i get mad heat...I currently gonna test with applications as maybe its an app that is causing it somehow..I could be completely wrong but worth a try..But as I said i'm back to pauls froyo 50 and no heating issues

As long as you've got a running, reliable phone that does what you want and doesn't catch fire, you don't need the highest version number (says the guy who is now running CM nightly builds...).
If you feel like figuring out what is killing off your phone:
First, take a good backup!
Then, do a factory wipe and reload FRF91.
See if you get the same behavior. If you do, it's 91 on your phone. If not, it's one of your apps.
So, if you do not see the "unusual" heating, try restoring your applications and running them like you usually would. Try using a script (if you are up to it) or OS Monitor plus a logcat to see what is eating you up.
yeah i originally put in the old radio and went back to emother's 1.9.2...then put in pauls froyo 50 (which included the new radio). So far added my apps and no extreme heat. Only when on wi-fi but the heat i'm getting was the same i normal got in the beginning and minimal heat when ac charging (before it would get extremely hot). When i come home from work imma try his froyo 91. I'm thinkin it also is stemming from a game Hero of Sparta and a facebook chat app. If i'm correct thats when i first noticed heat issues. but could be wrong i'll let you know
when i have my phone in my car dock i have one of the vents in my car pointed at the thing blasting AC all over it!

Im not sure if this is normal but every night when I plug my phone in to charge and I wake up in the morning its really hot. I tried charging it through USB and I did not get the same results. I was having trouble with my sim card sometimes it would not read and i would have to remove and reinsert it for it to work. Today when I woke up I found it odd that i didnt have any emails or missed calls and when i turned the phone on it had an X in the signal bar area. After trying the sim on several devices I came to the conclusion the sim was probably fried. Also when I went to pick up the phone it was extremely hot. I am using a blackberry charger tonight to see if i get similar results I will be without my phone for a few days as the tmobile locations around my area are out of replacement sims. Any thoughts on this and is this happening to anyone else?
Yup same problem here. Mine also getting very hot after a full charge. I think its a manufacturing defect.
I started using the official nexus one desktop charger and it doesn't seem to be getting hot anymore with it

ive got an AC adapter, and when i plug directly into the phone to charge it gets very hot, but if i use that very same AC plug and the desktop dock everything is cool to the touch?
It helps to underclock it. U have it running 498 MHz while charging. Not as hot running on 998 MHz.

I was using my Nexus 7, playing a game. It then static-screened and hissed for 2 secs and then died! It was charging through PC USB.
It won't power up anymore.

You may have overheated it. Wait a few hours and try again. also, depending on the USB charging, the charger may not have been able to keep up with the battery drain of the game and it shut down for a low battery. Use the OEM charger whenever possible.

If the device actually made a "fizzle" sound then I recommend sending it in for a replacement. Sounds like a battery leak. Was it overclocked?

I had the same problem yesterday, my battery was very low and I was using it while plugged-in a PC USB.
I was playing reckless racing, i left it on the desk for awhile when I went back to my PC. the device was on, but all of a sudden it fizzled and static screened.
I freaked out and unplugged the USB. then the device shut-down(turns black) immediately. The device was a bit hot on the back bottom. I tried to turn it on, NO GO. I plugged it in the OEM charger, NO charging screen. tried turning on, still no go.
then i look in xda. and found out someone said to hold the power button for 30s.
So, the device was plugged in OEM charger. I sat it there for like 5 mins first. then try to do the 30s.
It boot up again on like 35, or 36 second i counted.
I bet it was a low battery problem, since charging it from a PC doesn't provide enough power.
The method solved mine, and i hope it solved yours too.

I meant to say a I heard a fizzling sound when it static screened. Almost like the sound you hear with TV static but more... fizzy? :silly:

If you heard a fizzle I'd definitely still send it back in for RMA, better safe than sorry down the road.
just looping the sound file from the game before shutting down not a issue. watch that battery icon in the future.
playing nova 3 on full 1600mhz oc N7 did the same on a freeze and reset. (; have to find the settings that work right. nova 3 1500mhz with the gpu oc at 500 screams and is stable on my N7. spiderman became a fun game after the kernel flash.

If you drain the battery completely - don't expect any display until you have charged it for probably an hour.
Funky noises from your game when you flatline the battery is no cause to return it.
Use a dedicated charger for game play, preferably the one that came with it.
Didn't fizzle here, just turned off and no matter how long I held power button or left charging on mains connector or on PC, the tablet was completely dead. Returned to Argos and got refund and now waiting on another Nexus 7 to be delivered but via Tesco direct this time.
Fingers crossed this one lasts a lot longer than the hour the first one did

I had this exact same problem except mine wasn't plugged into anything and my battery was not near empty. When I finally got it booted back up it was at 27% so for me it wasn't low battery. I only ever use the charger that came with it - unless I'm connecting it to my laptop for a few minutes to transfer files, etc.
This is my second Nexus 7. The first one got returned because it had problems with the touchscreen on occasion. It actually did do this static/fizzle/crash once or twice as well.
I wonder if the static/fizzle/crash issue is being addressed in hardware and/or software with a newer version of either one?
Pls tell me Asus representatives are reading these threads in xda. I can see lots of problems with the device. Google should take serious actions on this

Maybe, but I had more than a quarter of my battery left and had very similar symptoms. I think it might be related to heat generated by gaming. Maybe with low (but not out of) battery, maybe not. The touchscreen issues I experienced on my first N7 seemed to only occur after hard gaming. Maybe there's a heat dissipation issue? (Wild speculation)
Mine did exactly the same last week, thought it had died altogether but holding the power for 45 seconds sorted it.
I need help too.
My N7 turned off when the battery ran out. So i plugged to charge through PC USB and immediately when that great charger icon apear in the screen i pressed the button power, and so it go black. No more signals. Dead... No charge, no turn on anymore.
I tried to hold the power button for 30s a lot.
I opened the N7, unpluged e pluged again the battery. Nothing.
I let it charging, in the OEM charger, with OEM cable, all the night, for more than 12 hours. Nothing.
And it has a "fizzle" sound. It can be heard better when its open.
When i disconnect the battery the sound stop. If i connect the charger, even without the battery, the sound come back.
When i hold the power button for 30s the sound stop for about 3 seconds, and then restarts.
The Windows manager device recognizes the N7 as a weird "APX" (image attach).
In from Brazil, so for now will not be easy to return to google.
Any ideas?

Update:
I discovered that the unit does not appear to be charging.
Before, the OEM charger became a little hot, and now nothing.
I instaled today the program "Asus AI charger" that lets you charge a ipad in USB, and the icon charging do not apear when i connect the N7, only when i connect other devices.
So mine just fizzled and died not connected to any power source. I was at 9%. It was running a bit warm but no where near relatively hot. Will update...

My xperia battery drains while it charging and in use like YouTube or texting, if it 10% so it becomes 9% and keep decreasing slowly, any help to solve it I never faced that problem before update to lollipop 5.1.1!

How old is your phone? I'm thinking of buying a new battery.
I had the same problem, especially when I used VR goggles to play PC games(via Trinus VR app) even when USB was plugged in, after 30min of playing eg doom 3 i had drop from 70% to 40%
In normal usage, when I was watching movies and using standard Sony charger I had slower drops but still after one movie I had drop from 80% to 75% with charger plugged in...
I found only one solution for that: 2.2 A charger and 5.2V
Its damn hard to find such charger, most of them have 2 USB slots and cut half this power to every USB, but some of them give full 2.2/5,2 to every USB slot and that one is best.
BUT problem is, that such charger can really quickly mess up your battery. Phone is hot as hell, and battery can die x2 faster than using normal charger. So I use it only sometimes when watching movies.
PS also I found out that using docking station that use pins are way better and faster to charge our XZ.

I will try to use another charger maybe a Lenovo tablet charger it's ac will be more than the Sony one but it will make the battery so hot and that will ruins it fast than its normal life cycle.

Next November it will be one year, I don't know why is that happening with me but this is annoying because I used to watch videos while it charging before sleep on bed :crying:

its remind me situation about battery life:
HEY! WE PUTT NFC, LTE, GPS, HUGE SCREEN, ULTRA CAMERA, 99GHz CPU 200GB RAM ON OUR DEVICES... and small battery
And when you ask someone about it: turn it off, dont use it, dissable it...
So they saying that we bought device for 300-700$ and now we need to make it dump so it can last one day... without using it...
What is the point of having eg LTE and NFC, if can use it, because my battery gonna die before I can use it...

I personally think a charger with 2Ah output won't do bad things to your battery. Anything over that should simply not be used to charge the Xperia Z.
Guys I tried another Sony charger it charging good even using the phone while charging yeah it kinda slow but that better than before.
Ps smartphones are annoying :silly:
Also I forgot to mention that chargers for tablets are good to, I tried one for galaxy tab and its almost fast as 2.2A even if it have only 2A.
Most of them are the same as for phones, but some bigger one have more powerful chargers

I recently bought this terminal and I have detected these two problems:
When I charge the phone (with the original charger) with the screen on it charges excessively slow, depending on the app you are using it even discharges even if it is connected. In addition, it is never fulfilled what it says on the screen that is left to finish charging, at least twice. The funny thing is that it seems that with the screen off it charges much better. The mobile always says that it is charging fast.
On the other hand, something similar happens to me with bluetooth headphones: if I'm using the phone while listening to music it cuts out very frequently, and if I'm with the screen off it works normal.
Does this happen to anyone else, could it be a motherboard or OS problem?
The phone is upgraded and less than a month old.

if it's really low it could be a faulty USB daughter board
