XT1058 - Never used, I wonder what to do with it, hrmmm - Moto X Q&A

So, I just got this Moto X not an hour ago that's a "replacement exchange" for the Atrix HD that bricked with Motorola's last update from 2014. Took 2+ months of online chats, phone calls, etc to get them to at least do something to alleviate the situation caused by their own update. But enough of that...
What they sent me is an apparently brand new never ever used (not even refurbished) white Moto X with a label on the box dated Sept 25 2013 (verified the bar codes upon booting it the first time). It's running Android 4.2.2 and it appears to have a bootloader of 30.70 (yes, thirty dot seventy) so, obviously I grabbed Sunshine to see if it would work and it passed all the tests with flying colors as expected but I'm not sure I want to go that far.
The issue for me is that it's one of those dreaded scumbucket Moto X models that has the IMEI number starting with 35321 which means it can't or won't be carrier/SIM unlockable by anyone, not AT&T and certainly not Motorola.
Since that would mean it's locked down with AT&T and I won't use AT&T - diehard fan of T-Mobile for years now with that still awesome $30/month 5GB plan - I'm wondering what I should do with this thing.
I wouldn't suspect that having the full capabilities of accessing this device will matter with respect to it remaining carrier locked, i.e. even with a properly unlocked bootloader and s/off if I were to muck around with the CID/MID stuff that still wouldn't help me like if I converted it to the "Developer Edition" or even the XT1053, the T-Mobile variant, it'll still be carrier locked to AT&T forever.
If I'm wrong there I'm hoping that someone reading this will chime in about it but, for the moment it seems I've got a brand new Moto X that I can't even use, sadly. Thinking about putting it on craigslist for $125 and just moving on, I'm kinda sick of Motorola's crap over the years. Was an Atrix 4G owner and waited on ICS which they promised but never delivered, owned a Photon and they promised ICS and never delivered, and so on.
I think I'm going to start saving up for the LG G4 which appears - at least from the currently available info - to be the wicked evil cool smartphone I've been waiting on for years now...
I'm wondering, if any of you were in the same situation, what would you do with this somewhat rarity in the Moto X world nowadays, a pristine untouched 4.2.2 device with an original bootloader just waiting for possibilities?
Keep it, sell it... I wonder.

Auction it on eBay and post the link here

Not a big fan of auctions, and since I don't do them with any regularity if I did that even if I made some money from it PayPal would make me wait a month to claim the funds, unfortunately.
It's listed on craigslist for $125 and will more than likely disappear in the next few hours, who knows.

AT&T offered an Inspire to shut me up

I called AT&T to do my part in the campaign to unlock the bootloader of the Vivid. The CSA seemed to understand our issue (wanting root/not wanting CIQ). I told her that these were the issues that needed to be resolved before I would upgrade when I am due late 2012. She (out of nowhere) asked if there were any other devices that I was interested in that were capable of root and didn't have CIQ. When I mentioned that my wife had an Inspire, she quickly asked if I was interested in an upgrade today. (I am using a rooted Aria). I told her that I didn't want to pay the higher price for a device since I am not due for an upgrade for several months. She offered to send me an Inspire, to arrive in 2 weeks if I want. Renew the contract for 2 years and it's mine. "Free"
Wow...
Nice try...if I do this, I am going to miss out on great pricing for some of the better Android devices yet to come. Or is this my last chance to get an HTC device with an unlocked bootloader? Should I bite?
No way, wait for the G Nex to hit AT&T

Not a chance.... you have been able to get the inspire almost free on contract forever. Wait for something better.

I got my son's Inspire for Free at Target 6 weeks ago.
Important to point out that I am in the middle of a 2 year contract. An upgrade so far from my contract end date typically makes one ineligible for discounts on new equipment, right?
Also...are we sure that the G Nex will have an unlocked bootloader and no CIQ?

nexus phones are specifically made with bootloaders you can unlock easily. since the verizon one comes with bloat we can assume, if at&t subsidizes it in their store, not through the nexus website, that it will have some at&T specific apps also.
but the phone will allow u to disable them just like u can on verizon
If they said that they'd send you an Inspire with no contractual obligation, I'd have been thinking "Wow, great!". Add the two-year wrinkle to it, and you are swiftly drop-kicked back to the reality that AT&T sucks.

We can also argue now that the latest Google phone isn't a nexus anymore. Carriers like Verizon are ruining products.

Inspire is a great device. Loved it, but I'd hold out.

[Q] Getting ready to order two X's

I am getting ready to order a couple of X's for my wife and me. I have a couple of questions....
We are with at&t. Is there a difference between the at&t branded ones and the GSM dev models? I have Googled this, but I am still confused as to whether there are hardware differences which would make the dev model less useful on at&t and whether there is bloat on the at&t model....
We have a SG4 and an iPhone 5 which still under contract which we will keep as spares for the family. I assume that we can buy the X at&t branded through Moto Maker without a contract? and just stay on the plan?
Thank you. I have spent hours on this and I am still confused, probably because it keeps changing....
I would like to know to. I'm getting ready to buy a moto x also

the developer edition are unlocked and u can unlock ur bootloader without losing ur warranty
being unlocked u can use with other carriers
if u buy at&t u can use only with at&t
if u want a phone that u can use with gsm carriers and with other carriers take or a developer edition or a unlockable one without contract
I got the T-Mobile unlockable (and unbranded!) version from Motomaker off-contract. Works great on AT&T and it beat paying the extra dough for a developer edition, since it's practically the same damn thing! (I also don't care about voiding warranty having unlocked my bootloader. I take care of my phone. If warranty is something you desire, then go dev edition or stick with your current carrier's version).

I'm pretty sure the developer edition is the same price as the moto maker version so it won't cost any "extra dough." And it doesn't matter how well you care for your phone. That's not what a warranty is for. It covers failures NOT caused by the user. You could wrap your phone in bubble wrap, never flash a third party app, and only use it under tightly controlled environmental conditions, insuring the phone is never exposed to any abuse, and a part could still fail, thus necessitating the use of the warranty. Which you voided by unlocking the boot loader on a non-developer edition.
You can pick either the AT&T branded one, the T-Mobile variant, or the unlocked. The T-mobile is actually unbranded, SIM unlocked and has no carrier apps.
I'm in the same boat still in contract with AT&T and purchased the T-Mobile one to leave my options open to switch to T-Mobile later and be able to purchase SIM cards for use abroad without having to fight the death star to get an unlock code.

If I could've bought the developer version easily I certainly would have.
But to me...I'll risk the 400 bucks to unlock..root..etc. I have on every device I've owned. LOL. I need my customization, battery life control..etc etc.

Anyone having any luck getting the Moto X on contract in the UK?

Can only find it on mobile phones direct, an online only retailer. And they're taking forever to ship it, and pretty much lied to me about their stock.
So does anyone in the UK know anywhere stocking it? This phone seems so damn hard to get a hold of
I haven't seen it on any network anywhere. I heard P4U had an exclusive on it, but since they've gone bang.....
Yea I think that's what's screwing us over here, the phone seems to be stuck in limbo.
I ended up ordering it via mobile phones direct, they've told me it would be here tomorrow everyday for a week now. Initially was meant to be here last friday. Rung up today and they've told me it is delayed for a week. Could really do with someone else selling it
Clove have them SIM-free:

Yea I'm after a contract
Still no news on the Moto X being on any network. I can't really dish out the nearly £500 for the 32GB
Has anyone heard anything?
Mobilephonesdirect.co.uk are the only provider I've found so far, received mine a couple of days ago
I find it really strange after all the good reviews of this phone, its like the networks are shunning Motorola. I've had online chats with o2 and I've had responses usually worded "we have no updates for this device" I wish they'd just give a yes/no about if its coming soon or not

I spoke with EE who is my provider and they said that they had no idea if they would get the phone because Motorola phones do not sell well (with them).
I played with the Z3 on Wednesday and REALLY liked it. It would have been better if it was close to pure android BUT given the unfortunate circumstances with the lack of availability from the Moto X, I will be purchasing the Z3 this weekend.
I think the networks are missing a trick here, some people are after a stock android experience and the size of the nexus 6 will put some off so will be wanting a device like the moto x.

I was one of those who was put off by the size of the Nexus 6. Maybe it is Motorola's interest to push the Nexus before its other phones?!

I was going to hold off for the Nexus 6, but after looking around I decided I don't want a handset of that size.
The New Moto X (2014) really took my fancy and my brother bigged up the Moto X (2013) so after a lot of hunting around on the net and trying to get the New Moto X as an upgrade from my service provider with no luck as they haven't heard of it.
I found Mobile Phones Direct on the net and placed my order a few days ago. It arrived yesterday and I unlocked the bootloader (followed guide on Motorola website) straight out of the box and then once loosely set up I rooted it (followed the guides in this forum) to bring back the exposed goodness that I love.
The phone looks great and feels great in the hand, love rooted stock KitKat with exposed.

Can I ask is there any network branding on it? Mines coming Monday on EE, also from Mobile phones direct. I figured (hoped) as none of the networks seem to be offering it themselves MPD might just be selling the SIM free model with a contract
Hello there,
No branding or bloatware on the phone at all.

Excellent, thanks for that... Just what I was hoping you would say
Does that mean that mobilephonesdirect sells the pure edition? In spite of their nice price, I would hate ending up with a locked bootloader at the end

Going by model number (XT1092 Europe, Asia) its not a Pure Edition (XT1095) but according to the table at this link:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X_(2nd_generation) its SIM Unlocked.
The bootloader was easily unlocked by following the guides in this forum and on the Motorola website (did it as part of my first boot up)
Then rooted after basic set up.

who else hate his moto X 2014 ATT Version?

damn i hate this phone.... really regret about buying it... stupid att with his locked bootloader... cant upgrade to lollipop.
love my 2014 att moto x. yes i want to upgrade. but it is stable and working fine for me.
i have lollipop on my nexus 7 fhd. whoopty whoop. really not a big deal. seriously.
Is is the best phone that I have ever owned? No absolutely not, the battery is pretty miserable, but other than that a few other small niggles, it is a good handset.
In fact it's signal reception and its ability to cancel out detuning on the fly is pretty impressive and make me pretty impressed in that Geeky sort of way with the phone.

So you're mad because you bought a subsidized phone with a locked bootloader instead of the unsubsidized Pure Edition with an unlocked bootloader that already has Lollipop available? What am I missing here?

Your not missing anything. He is pissed because he chose to not buy a pure edition( or couldn't afford one) hell, I'm still paying for mine with moto's financing.
I actually did the same thing. Both Moto's financing and the AT&T Next plan are basically 0% interest loans for a set number of months for the unsubsidized price. Knowing that, I went with Moto instead as that left my Next upgrade available should I not like this phone and want to return it and get another one. At the end of the day, both are the same price, divided by the same number of months, but I was able to get a Pure edition in the process. Now had you gone for the standard 2-year agreement, that's something else entirely.

Caveat emptor. You bought a phone without doing the proper research. You have nobody to blame but yourself.

Verizon vs Nexus

I was skimming through your forums (I am a VZW Moto X 2014 owner) and I was considering an upgrade to the next Nexus if it comes to Verizon. Has Verizon thrown any road blocks in the way of the Nexus 6 as far as unlocking it? Or is it as simple as every other Nexus by just going into fastboot and oem unlock?
I'd like to go back to a Nexus, but I don't want to waste my time if its just as locked down as any other phone.
Better even than that. Not only is verizon no longer strong enough to resist the goog... they are not *legally* allowed to prevent you from registering your Nexus (purchased from goog direct) on their network.
Verizon sells the Nexus 6, 32gb and 64gb models, but only in Midnight Blue. You can buy one from Motorola or Google Play in Cloud White with the same size options (or blue if you don't want VZW to get the money). And if you buy from Moto/GP, it won't be branded with VZW logos, and has ZERO VZW apps on it. None were installed automatically. Just 100% clean stock Lollipop.
I bought mine on Google Play a few weeks ago. Opened the box, took all the OTAs (all the way to 5.1.1 LMY47Z), unlocked the bootloader, rooted and put in my VZW SIM (from my Moto X 2013). Worked fine until I had to RMA for the back cover coming off. They sent me a new device and it works like a champ. I did the exact same thing when the new device arrived, no issues.
My dad also bought a Nexus 6 and did not unlock or root. He just popped in his SIM, took a few updates and went on his way.
Zero issues on VZW with the N6.
Same here. None VZ bought Nexus 6 on VZ. Zero issues and I'm even running 5.1.1
