VS980 Signal Horrible after battery replacement - Verizon LG G2

The battery in my G2 was only lasting 5 hours even in standby, so I opted to replace it with a new OEM one I bought on ebay.
The install went seamlessly, or so I thought. I reflashed the stock 5.0 KDZ file and now my signal strength is horrible in places where it used to be just fine... I'm only getting 1x and can't even establish a data connection in a lot of places where I'm used to full 4g coverage.
Not sure if I bent a cable or what's going on. I did bend one little piece while taking apart the flex cables but I looked it up and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the antenna.... it's on the left flex cable and sticks out and down. It's glued down under the housing cover on the mid-left.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I just reflash the modem files and try that?
Jay

I had thes ame problems you had after upgrading to kitkat. I got 1x at home all the time and battery life was horrendous. I went around and around with verizon. They even sent me a new phonee with the same results. I rolled back and took updates up to 26A kitkat, rooted and froze the update app along with some other unnecessary apps. My battery life is back to great and the phone is snappier. Lollipop was a total failure for me.
I would try rolling it back and see how it functions. Your battery may not have been bad.

Question: is the D802 battery supported on a VS980? Also, do you have any guide for the VS980 I can follow for replacing the battery? That would be much welcome, thank you!

I found this with a Google search of "battery for lg g2."

XDA, to me, is a reputable source of information. An american website I've never heard about, isn't. But thank you anyway.

No problem. I was just trying to help.

Disappointed...

Ugh I just bought the Moto Bionic yesterday and I am already unhappy with it compared to my Samsung Charge. The overall speed of the phone is great( doing basic task not requiring the internet, but when I start searching from the Android Market or trying to search the internet, it takes forever to load anything. Second, the reception is awful, I would get full bars and 4gLTE all the time with the Samsung Charge at the house, but now using the Moto Bionic it gets maybe 1 bar and switches between 3g and 4g within the Houston area. I also have been having issues of just loading the android market, sometimes it literally wont load or Ill try and download an app and it will get stuck on downloading and not actually install the app. The having a locked bootloader does not help Moto's cause. I hate the bloatware that comes on phones and I should have the option if I want that crap or not. My Samsung Charge shows similar results in speed when Rooted and running PBJT/CWM7/ and Gummy Charged. I am returning the phone today also because the verizon sales rep lied to my mom and said she was not permitted to the trade in old phone for smart phone 100$ gift card. I am going back to the Charge today, Good luck on the bootloader! if y'all do decrypt it Ill be glad to jump back to this phone just for the processing power and to see what the Devs can do with so much power.
call verizon customer service, and explain to them whats going on and they will help you more then the store will.
Bleh... 1 day? Really? How can you really judge a phone completely after one day?

I took your advice and called support. They said I just need to go to the store and put everything back to how it was, and it would cost me 35$ restocking fee, but maybe theyd be lenient to me because the sales person lied....
well my main issue was the sales rep said I was not eligible for the 100$ gift card bc he wanted the sale instead of me ordering it off their website, I guess I should have checked the website for my mom but she came home and said she wanted a new phone. So I am also returning it to get that 100$ gift card for my mom. and plus read what I wrote about it, Ive been playing with the phone all day. I also don't like the fact that it has a locked bootloader. Hopefully they will drop the encryption on the bootloader so the devs can have fun. The Samsung Charge is a badass phone too!
Bars are not a good indicator. Also the Bionic has 4 bars and not 5 like the Charge so you are not comparing Apples to Apples. I just cam from the Charge and noticed the same thing However speeds are the same and actually my uploads are consistently faster. I was on the fence big time. While I was at the store 4 people came in with Charges that were burning through SIM cards and Verizon doesn't know why. The Charge is a good phone I think you'll be happy either way.

The $100 trade in is valid in store as well online. However to qualify you must be upgrading from a feature phone to a smart phone, not smart phone to smart phone. Fine print is your best friend! Also if you are using an upgrade from another line(alternate upgrade), you will most likely not qualify.
No one lied to you, but your Rep did fail to explain the program properly.

When the HP Touchpad launched, I picked one up on launch day, took it home charged it and returned it after 5 hours. Not a phone, but...
I didn't want to "setup my accounts" on the floor model...I had to take it home.
Ironically I not only feel the Bionic has better reception I can prove it. Both my wife, and a buddy at work have Charges and there's a night and day difference with the quality of radios.
Not saying the Charge is not a great phone, its just not as good when it comes to connectivity.
I feel there might be something wrong with your Bionic

I tend to agree with this post. The Bionic radio is leaps ahead of both the Samsung and HTC 4g LTE devices. I don't know anyone with an LG Revolution so I can't comment on that one.
I actually find HTC (Thunderbolt) to have the better radio as opposed to the Droid Bionic. LG Revolution was the best to me hands down. Best reception everywhere. Consistent LTE everywhere I went.

Bars are not any kind of indicator of signal strength. Use the DB to see that and in my studies it is actually the best of the LTE crop thus far. (No shock since Motorola always does this) Bootloader I understand and the rest of the issues aren't known Bionic issues from what I have read and it sounds like problems with your google account or something.

Don't use the bars as judgement they are wrong use actual signal strength. After seeing all the LTE phones in action Bionic has the lowest DB by leaps and bounds..
DO a factory data reset before you judge the handset. There is some bad juju in your phone and this will purge it.

I haven't been all that happy with the Bionic to date either, but it's not due to reception. I have issues with the screen (my first Pentile experience, and it sucks), battery (had to get the extended battery, now my phone's a fat a**), camera quality and shutter speed is awful and lastly no CM7 support.
I went from Sprint/EVO to the Bionic, and while I was frustrated with the Sprint service and coverage, I was happy with the EVO. I had it setup perfectly, it ran great and I miss the camera.
The Bionic on LTE is 3 to 5 times faster than the top speeds I was able to accomplish on Sprint's network, but I'm missing the better camera and form factor of the EVO.

Hopefully you are judging via Settings -> About phone -> Network -> Signal Strength, rather than via BARS and coverage indicator on the home screen.
Of all the feature phones and smart phones I have, Moto has been consistently been the best at pulling signal (comparing RSSI values, not "bars"), Samsung the worst, and LG somewhere lower than middle (there have been one or two exceptions to this).
If the Thunderbolt (which I have) gives better reception than the Bionic (should be here today or tomorrow), I will be shocked. Especially because my TB isn't as good pulling 3G/EVDO signals as even my HTC Incredible. And my Droid X and original Droid pulls better signal than the Incredible.
NOTE: RSSI values are measured in -dBm so the more negative, the worse the signal. And it is logarithmic, not linear, so the difference between -93 dBm and -94 dBm is greater than the difference between -70 dBm and -71 dBm.

The stock camera app blows, common knowledge.
Camera itself is fine.
The battery lasts a good 15-18 hours light use. And should do 10-12 heavy use.
While the screen isn't the best color wise, it sure has good power draw.

Sorry for the noob question, but what's a better alternative camera app for the Bionic?
Agreed, i got my bionic the day it came out and i too was a little apprehensive at the laggyness for certain apps but now having it for a few weeks i have used the force and tweaked this beast into something extraordinary and am very happy indeed.

[Q] LG G2 [Verizon] "rooted" status

On the Verizon LG G2, there is a root status check and another in download mode if I restore to a stock image, will the status go back to unrooted for both?
I don't think that's been determined yet. Until it is I'm just doing a lot of reading and preparation

It goes back to unrooted, if you use lgflash. I know it will show rooted, flash the stock file, go back to download it will say unrooted. I have done it a couple times already.

It is ok, I am just really happy with how this phone works, and how quick and smooth it is. Not to mention how quickly it boots up too.
I don't normally comment just to comment but I agree I came from an S3 to a Note 2 to an S4 all Samsung obviously and by far and away this is the best phone I've used in a very long time if ever. Blazing fast great screen good build quality and I love that it isn't locked down like the S4. I just switched 2 days ago as I was tired of fighting with ROMs and not being able to use an AOSP version. My g2 is considerably faster than the S4 overall.

Lol "fighting with ROMs". I feel you bro. You won't have to worry about that on the G2. Stock ROM is awesome and so is CM.
On the Motorola Defy however... let's not go there. You're lucky to have come across the G2.
I come from a galaxy s 3 as well and i have to admit the LG G2 is a beast of a device.

It will still say rooted in your about phone section in the settings menu. Luckily there is nothing wrong with my phone. But if there was i would just buy a new phone. I have had horrible luck with Verizons replacement phones.
But as far as i have seen there is no way to fix the "rooted " message in the settings menu.

What's wrong with my battery?

Hi,
After seeing reports of everyone's awesome battery life, mine seems terrible - it will only last about 12 hours with 2 hours screen on time, just Web browsing and listening to music really. I noticed my signal strength seems poor most of the time, but I have been in rural locations so that isn't necessarily unexpected.
I bought the phone from Fido (Rogers) but unlocked it to use on koodo, that shouldn't make a difference should it?
I'm thinking of sending it for repair /replacement but I really don't want to as my fall back phone is a pos Galaxy Ace II. There shouldn't be much crap running in the background and I've tried a factory reset so I'm not sure what else to do?
Return it.

OK here are some screens. The signal is terrible for a lot of it but that doesn't seem to be the problem, just that it doesn't have enough juice.
I probably will return it, which is going to suck. It's an awesome phone otherwise.
I'm using an unlocked Rogers Moto X with Koodo. Having great battery life for the most part. I do find its better running 4.4 (using the AT&T 4.4 release) however to install it you would need to unlock your bootloader which voids the warranty. Cycle the battery another day or two, if that makes no difference then the battery may in fact be bad.

I would like to install 4.4, but as you said it will screw me over unfortunately. I've had the phone 2+ weeks now, I've only just got home to do anything about it so it should have had plenty of time to settle in. Looks like a trip to Fido is in order!

Do you have root? Try this:

The install better battery stats or gsam and try to figure it out. If you're running up to the end of your return period, then I guess you should exchange it.
I don't believe that phones have "bad" battery life; you just have to find out what's cause the problem in your particular case.
I am getting similar results all of a sudden. Stock not rooted. I get about 2 hours of screen on time with about 13 hours uptime
Do [either of] you have location reporting on? Look at notro's screenshots, those consistent wake blue slivers "look" like location reporting...
I'm also getting results like these. I got this phone on Craigslist, so I don't know exactly how to go about returning it. I was thinking about sending it back to Motorola since the phone is still under the 1 year warranty. I tried chatting online with Motorola customer service, but they just gave me some tips on how to improve battery life. Any ideas? Thanks.

Verizon LG G2 GPS Fix Solution

I had a problem with my LG G2 Verizon Smartphone. The GPS wouldn't lock on and didn't know which direction I would even be going ( I searched I couldn't find a solution.). I ran into this app and it works, Assisted GPS Injector. It's available in the market and it worked immediately and took care of all the issues I was having. I'm sorry if this has been posted here before, but I just wanted to make sure everybody knew becaue I tried many things to get the gps to work right and none of them worked until I used this app..

I tried a bunch of attempts at getting my GPS to fix (different roms, editing gps.conf, using various gps apps, etc), but after replacing it 3 times with VZW I got it. Some of the HW is known to crap out for GPS so if you have warranty with VZW, don't hestitate to call and swap devices.
I'll try this tommorow, been having problems with my GPS as well, it'll lock but it will be sort of erratic/not accurate and lose signal. I'm on my third replacement device so I really don't wanna have to do all that again..

I have no idea if there's a difference other than ads on the pro or free. I paid the .99 for the app. It worked for me instantly. Clicked on the app then on the gps icon and away I went and it found my exact location immediately and kept locked on the entire trip. I only tried it because I read in the reviews somebody had similar issues with their lg g2 and it worked for them. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I had downloaded A-GPS Xtra and reset all my previous gps data first. Although that didn't help my situation by itself it could of possibly helped.
On my first G2, the GPS wasn't great no matter what ROM I used, it didn't even work right out of the box. The replacement I got has been working on literally every every ROM I used. The original didn't work on any firmware release either. I tried many different apps and config files. The one I'm on now is perfect. I guess it's just bad luck sometimes I guess if still stock one can always go to Verizon about it

I didn't have a choice about taking it back to Verizon. I bought it off of CL and it was probably one the original owner had replaced. So, returning it isn't an option for everybody. I tried many things that didn't work also, but this app did and it's why I shared.
I've had a similar issue on my sprint version. Doesn't make it unusable but sometimes I will magically be driving on the wrong side of the interstate or of the road backwards. I just hope that it's just a software bug

Any updates how to fix this?
I have been going back and forth with Verizon and the GPS on my G2. I actually have my third replacement phone waiting for me when I get home. The last rep I spoke with said that it is a known issue that is to be fixed with an upcoming update. I would assume that update to be 4.4.2 but I haven't heard whether or not the GPS is any better in the leaked OTA. He did tell me that they have received the update from LG but it was currently being tested.
The GPS issue is actually a hardware issue. There is a springy connector on the phone that tries to keep a steady connection to the anttenae strip on the battery cover. It is on the side opposite of the SIM card.
Here is a picture from another XDA thread by JTNiggle that shows the insides of the VZW LG G2.
First picture shows the battery cover and you can see the small square copper connector for the GPS antennae on the right hand side. Second picture shows on the right side of the phone above the battery the little springy copper connector for the GPS sensor on the phone. These are the two areas I used very tiny pieces of electrical tape on to make a solid connection. This has 100% resolved my issue with GPS signals and I have been sporting this change for over a week now. I get a signal lock between 3-7 seconds depending on where I am at (inside or outside) and the days weather. I have done this on a total of 4 phones now and all four phones no longer have GPS signal lock issue. Just make sure you use a non metal tool to pop the battery cover off so it doesn't scratch up the shiny silver bezel strip.

I honestly don't think all the software updates in the world would fix this problem. It is a physical hardware issue that is causing the problem.

This is great info! Could you clarify just a little what exactly you did with the electrical tape? Like put a tiny piece "under" the flex connector? I haven't actually taken mine apart yet so maybe this would be clearer then... Also is there a chance this would help my compass? I can't seem to get it calibrated and working.

On the phone itself there is a small copy flex like connector. If you look on the link that shows the two images for the inside of the phone and the inside of the battery cover, you will see on the phone the tiny little flex connector I am speaking about. With gentle tender care slide some electrical tape (fold it together sticky sides in) underneath the flex connector. This will help it keep a solid connection to the antennae plate on the battery cover. I have done this on 4 phones total one of them mine. All four VZW LG G2 phones had the same issue. Depending on exactly where you were at you would get a weak lock/signal when needing to use GPS on the phone. After this was done the signal is nice and strong and locks within 3-7 seconds for me (yes I have timed it). This is both indoors and outdoors. The G2 is able to lock onto GPS just like any of my other phones in the past and also the MotoX.
I haven't had to modify the GPS.conf from stock (this never worked for me anyways as it wasn't able to acquire a signal 99% of the time). GPS just now works.
Will this also fix the issue of showing that I am like 3-4 houses away, while when I was on JB it showed me I was next door(or at least in between next door and my actual location).

Well that was an easy mod! I cut a strip of black elec tape about 3/32" x 3/8" and doubled the end to make approx 3/32" of the end doubled. this left a short tab that I could use to manipulate the doubled part under the flex connector and then stick in place to secure it there (or remove later if desired). My GPS and compass are both very responsive and accurate now. I'm also using GPS Status and I've used an app called GPS Injector that I believe help but not as much as this mod. :good:
It must be batches, my GPS is about flawless.

Yep was easy, I got this idea of course from seeing that image I linked in my previous post and I saw the inside of the phone.

Do you mind posting some pictures of how/where you applied the tape? Thanks!

Member Ainver posted a link with pix just a few posts up.
I think when you get the back off the phone it will make more sense what has been posted here also.
Good luck

So anyone else get Lollipop OTA?

I like my root and don't want to be the Guinea pig, but see the OTA is here. Have to do some research so I don't brick my G2...again
BTW I just added a screenshot of my system info.

I'm downloading the update right now! I unrooted my phone yesterday but was unaware I had to revert to stock firmware to update, so I had to do that first . For some reason it looks a little different from my old software's gui but I'm happy I'm getting the update!
Let us know how it goes! I'm quite happy with my g2, except for the GPS that needs a clear sky view to be accurate. Don't want to break a good thing!

Well after performing all the previous updates for my g2, I finally installed 5.0, and now my g2 won't boot up so I have to install the stock firmware again LOL
Yeah so I went through the whole updating thing a second time and the same thing happened. I learned that my phone tried updating to 5.0 one time and failed. The second time I tried to install it, after it finishes updating, after reboot it should go into optimizing apps and such before loading the screen, but it's just stuck at the lg screen.

And LG reps admitted on the phone with me and a Verizon rep that the GPS would be fixed with the Lollipop update. Ha. It did not work. Big surprise. I have yet to deal with a company who cares less about their customers (and I drive a *gasp* Volkswagen!)!

Likely a hardware issue, the last two Assurion re-furbs have had great GPS performance. Quick locks and 3m accuracy even indoors and solid navigation in both portrait and landscape orientation when docked on the dash. This one just got the lollipop OTA last night and GPS is still strong.

My GPS got worse and worse on this refurb (screen had dead spots on last one). Anyway, I tightened the screws under the back cover and it now works better than it ever did. (Motorola GPS seemed better to me, well, usually. Maybe all my screws keep coming loose--this is first time I've tried to tighten them--and it worked).
