[Q] Nexus 6 Random cellular signal loss - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, Its been better now its worse, my mobile signal disappears leaving me from full strenght to empty triangle without any clear pattern. Calls, data, nothing works so its a geniune signal loss not a software bug. I was on LRX21O > LRX22C > LMY47D > LMY47I and latest is the worst.
I cant remember having this issue on 5.0 but early lolipop is plagued with bugs. Any ideas what might be going wrong and how to fix this? Its really frustrating....
thank you in advance community

I tend to have the same problem, but its only been mobile data for me, I have sprint.

I have a similar issue. When I attempt a phone call in my basement, I get "no carrier available". I can go upstairs/outside and initiate a call, go into the basement and the signal is fine. I suspect it is a radio problem that Google needs to fix. I also cannot send mms with photos-no matter where I am. Pretty darn frustrating for this over-priced phone.

General consensus is a software bug. Happens when switching between different LTE bands and different towers, regardless of carrier. Signal won't actually drop, but ASU jumps to 99, then corrects itself. This causes the signal bars to drop to zero, then back up, but signal stays connected the entire time. Would be nice to be able to revise the way that android reads that and not drop bars for it each time. Either that or have the ability to force to a particular band/tower to avoid the switch. Annoying, but looks worse than it actually is.
**Edit: Link fixed**

shows no signal but stays connected? Hard to believe, when my N6 drop signal I cant make a single call at all, is it part of the bug? Also the link you pasted doesnt work, please repost, I'd like to know more

Sounds like you may have something else going on if you can't make calls.

I have the same issue and it cancel calls even when I'm talking. Before Google's updates for that bug called stagefright it was awesome and without problem but now it seems their update aren't match carriers datas.specially for us in Asian countries because our carriers have no contact with google

I have the same issue as this, and I asked before:

Same problem with my Nexus 6P on Verizon. Cellular signal is lost and only restored by rebooting the phone. Happens 1-2 times daily. I'm on Android 7.0 build NBD91V.

No signal weird letters RSSI

Hey all,
So the issue is gone but still curious. I had no signal one day after class. All I saw was, no signal, even though my carrier logo was displayed. Tried loading internet but nothing.
Shortly after RSSI was displayed on the signal strength tile. I still couldn't place Phone calls or use the internet.
I'm suspect of my carrier AIO - AT&T having several mini outages and not telling customers based on previous situations so I'm investigating. Thanks for the help!!
Image is attached..

RSSI = received signal strength indicator.
Displaying the letters is a little strange though, sounds like a software glitch of some sort.
I have had exactly the same thing happen on my android mobile on kitkat in the last few days. I have noticed it on at least 3 occassions and it always seems to happen late at night when I have stopped using the mobile. It is very odd! I used Google to find the answer and it lead me here. Would love to know what it is and why it's happening.
BTW my phone is a moto g
my opinion; RSSI is displayed because you dropped your carrier. being a GSM carrier, it's possible you tried connecting to someone else's faint signal but never authenticated. this is all speculation, but hypothetically possible.
in other words, as long as you re-authenticate to your carrier, it's a non-issue.
Very strange, but I have a signal when it is happening to my phone and it is happening a lot lately, especially in the evening and then quite often as soon as I spot it it disappears. Starting to make me think something odd is going on.
well.. your image also shows "emergency calls only" which supports the theory that you've dropped carrier signal altogether. I believe you're right that believing that it has to do with the ATT/AIO service outtage.
but why RSSI instead of any other message... is another question altogether...

I do think it is a software glitch but it's very inconsistent. I feel strongly it's a Moto X or maybe Motorola firmware thing. With AIO I kept losing signal, so I left them and with T-mo now I and I experience the low signal rarely, and low signal here and there.
EDIT: I also still have some MMS issues w/ T-mo & AIO. not working, also inconsistent which I think is another firmware bug. Any of you guys have some clever ideas on how to troubleshoot this? Where would you start?
I'm rooted with R/W access and willing to dig thru system's files! apk's, whatever! Because this def is a problem and I would like to solve it.

I would also mess around with manual network selection while I had AIO so that could explain the weird signal stuff, here's the app I used in addition.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.andirc.lteonfoff
Strangely enough I've got this showing up in Airplane Mode on my Moto G as well (Verizon Prepaid activated but never paid for service). Also one night at random I noticed I had 3G showing up instead of just bars and used 250mb of data for free which was weird.
Try to specify carrier
Hey,
Please try to specify which carrier you prefer so your Moto X will not try to connect to alternative carrier with stronger signal.

Frequent Random Network Drops

I've seen a number of threads where people post about their device dropping network data connectivity, and needing a reboot to solve it.
My issue is a bit different. Occasionally (I've noticed it 3-4 times today) when I go to send a text (SMS) or to use a data enabled service like Hangouts, that my phone shows no bars at all.. not even just no data, but the bars are grey and there's a red x. I wait about 15 seconds and it reconnects, then another 10 seconds later, the data is live again.
Phone is a private sale and under 1 month old, and all the Stamina functions are off.. I do see that the "Queue background Data" is turned on, but I don't think this should effect, no?
Not sure what digits I should be looking at to know if this might be a hardware vs software issue.. build is listed as .93
Im no stranger to unlocking and flashing, but I've kept this stock cuz it's tight and I adore the battery life.
Suggestions?

Been about a month since I posted, and I'm still experiencing this issue. I often thumb my phone on and it's not connected. I don't really mind waiting for the 30 seconds or so that it takes to jump back on the network, but it often means I miss calls, and since it's my business phone, it kinda bums me out to suddenly get a VM notification of a missed call even though it never rang.
Is there some sort of utility that I can use to monitor the network activity to see how frequently it drops, and for how long? I've looked into ones on Play but they don't seem to have a history, just something that shows what data up and down is currently being reported.
Sadly the only Sony store in my city (and I think the country - Canada) has recently closed for good, so I'm not sure how to go about warranty repairs...

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that you're not alone. I've been experienced the same thing on my Z3C. I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the MVNO I use doesn't support 4G LTE.

Interesting.. Your issue isn't just data, but a complete network disconnection? Im with Fido which is an MVNO under Rogers, but I thought they supported LTE. The issue also persists even on wifi

Yes, it seems to be a complete loss of the mobile connection. When I wake the phone I see gray bars and a red X on the signal strength indicator. Within seconds the phone re-acquires and the indicator goes to 2 or 3 bars. I have also seen it happen with wifi active. The frustrating part is that it doesn't seem to do it often enough to troubleshoot. I'll notice the problem maybe a couple of times a month and there's nothing obviously different about my usage patterns in those instances.
Mine does it at least a dozen times a day. I can only assume this as I frequently miss calls and at least 3-4 times a day I see it happen. =(
Same Problem
Randomly I have no connection at all but after a few seconds everything wents back to normal. Did not have this problem with T-mobile in Germany but with with O2 I have. With T-mobile I had LTE but with O2 I don't, so I guess that's the reason.
Interesting... I've disabled LTE and now have it on 3g/GSM. We'll see how it works moving forward, and I'll post again in a week. Stay tuned.
Service Providers
In the mobile network settings one can change the service provider manually. With LTE enabled my provider has three entries: LTE, 3G and 2G. Connecting two LTE fails, because my provider blocked it in my plan. Having LTE enabled, it often tries to connect to LTE I assume. I switched off LTE and set the provider manually to 3G. Maybe that helps. We'll see.

[Q] Cell reception indicator constantly flips between "no reception" display and bars

[Q] Cell reception indicator constantly flips between "no reception" display and bars
I'm using the Xperia Z3 Compact on TMobile's network in the US.
About 1/4 of the time when I turn on the display the phone indicates that it has no cell reception:
1) The phone shows no bars of reception, and a red X over the bars
2) The lock screen reads "Emergency calls only"
However, within a second or two the phone appears to acquire an excellent signal and I get a full 3-4 bar display. All of the areas in which I use the phone are marked as "Excellent" on TMobile's coverage maps.
This also happens intermittently while I'm using the phone. I'm not sure if it's actually losing the signal or if it's just a software issue. I've never had it drop a call or cut out while I'm talking.
I'm getting only acceptable battery life from the phone (about 25% at the end of the day) despite light usage and conservative app installation, even though this phone has a reputation for excellent battery life. My theory is that this might have to do with the phone constantly disconnecting from the network and then having to re-aquire a signal.
Anyone else had this experience with the Z3C?
Hey mate.. I posted the exact same issue a couple of months back. I was experiencing this exact same issue.
I've had my LTE disabled for about a month now and haven't had a single drop.
Not sure if LTE is a dealbreaker but since my device is a business line, I can "suffer" with better battery life and slower internet if I'm not dropping calls. I've considered trying a ROM with updated radio firmware but figured I'd wait to see what the current Lollipop update does ('ll re-enable LTE once I install it and see if it repeats the same behavior) for my phone before trying a 3rd party system.
Hope this helps

Thanks! Really gratifying to know that it's not just my device. Seems like there's a strong possibility this is the issue since I'm on a MVNO that's only been on this LTE network a few months. I've flipped the device into GSM only mode and we'll see if it helps.

I'm having the same issue as you have described. For now I've set the phone to 3G prefered. Looks instantly better. Signal strength is also better.
Provider: Simyo (KPN network) - The Netherlands
Edit - Issue solved:
I switched from the Lollipop Baltic ROM to the Lollipop KPN carrier ROM for The Netherlands. The switching is gone for me. Battery life drastically went up.
Any update on this? I just started experiencing this issue out of no where about 2 weeks ago. I'm not rooted or anything, can't afford to due to job security requirements and such.

Data issue...

I've been having this really annoying issue where all of a sudden I just wont get a data connection even though there is a strong 4g signal. Any app that uses the internet will say there is a connection error, it just completely stops. I've been getting around it by having to turn on airplane mode and then turning it off. After I do that, everything starts connecting again, but it is insanely annoying. It seems to be getting more persistent, which is why I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing and if so, how did you fix it?
Thank you.
Oh and just in case, I'm running completely stock non rooted.
I've had the same problem the past few days. Don't know why & it happens fairly randomly. Only way to get around it is to connect to WiFi or turn data off/on.

Having the same issue here in Atlanta was told it should be sorted out by today. I'm also using lollipop stock but rooted. In the meantime ive been forcing 4g by using the lte dialer since I've been having frequent changing to edge network since the update, but I'm still having issues with a strong 4g connection especially YouTube app.

Some serious hacking went on yesterday. I'm assuming some of the slowness was related. Many online services were slow and United Airlines was take down completely.

T-mobile
from what i heard t mobile was doing some cleaning up of files or upgrades i called them since i was getting 3g.
I too have been seeing the same data issue. It could just be coincidental timing but within days of loading LP I started having the issue. Even flashed the ROM again in case it was a bad flash.
As stated in OP I toggle airplane mode to fix. Annoying for sure.
PopRocks v5
T-Mobile
Bump.
I have been having this issue too ever since upgrading to Lollipop. I've had it on 2 versions of Poprocks and I now it have while using Rapture. Extremely annoying.
I got around it by rebooting the phone. I did not think of airplane mode or data on/off, i'll give that a shot. I was actually thinking maybe it's an APN issue, but no one in here mentioned that. For what it's worth I live in Southern California.
This issue is really starting to annoy me. One thing I do with my phone is stream music while I'm driving, and now I'm having all kinds of issues once my phone drops off wifi & has to switch to data. My music just stops playing & I have to toggle airplane mode to fix the issue, which isn't fun/easy while driving. Plus, when I do that my phone doesn't reconnect to my car's bluetooth. Ugh! I sure hope this gets fixed soon.
As an update, months later and I still have data drops all the time. Really annoying and it has definitely soured me on the Note 4. First with the GPS issue I was having (that was only fixed after getting a replacement) and now this data issue.
They only doing this too trick us into getting the note 5.

After reading the new info on the Note 5, I'm not all that impressed. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a good device, but I wasn't really impressed with the changes. I'm sure it'll still be a great phone, but I don't know if I'm willing to risk another year of the data issue. I may go with the new Nexus this year.
I've had this problem (5 bars, but can't even ping 8.8.8.8... but if I toggle data off & on, I instantly connect & usually get fast transfers) all the time (Fort Lauderdale area) for months, but it seems to have been particularly bad for the past few weeks.
Is this T-Mobile's fault? Or do Note 4s on other carriers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc) have the same problem?
My theory:
* The number of bars is determined mostly by the signal strength of the nearest tower
* The phone doesn't necessarily use the same tower for data that it uses for voice & SMS (in fact, when it's using HSPA+, it HAS to be simultaneously connected to two different towers).
* The modem firmware resists changing towers when there's an active data session unless it totally and completely loses sight of the tower it's currently using for data. I'm not sure whether it's the fault of Android or GSM network design, but data hand-offs seem to be "hard" rather than "soft", and always involve a connectivity break of at least a few seconds before the new one gets established.
* Thus, you can get into a situation (say, by driving a half mile or so) where the phone establishes a data connection with one tower, you drive *just* far enough away that it can still hear the original tower -- but can't actually complete a transmission without unrecoverable errors -- but voice & SMS messages go through the nearby tower. When you toggle data, it breaks the old data session, and establishes the new one from the strong nearby tower.
One thing that appears to have changed (in South Florida, at least) over the past few months: I always had problems with losing data connections while driving unless I disabled LTE, but NOW it appears to be doing the same thing even when GSM/WCDMA only is selected instead of GSM/WCDMA/LTE. It's like they figured out what was making LTE dysfunctional, then went out of their way to make HSPA equally dysfunctional.

Losing signal reception for couple of seconds throughout the day

Hey guys, my OnePlus 3t is losing signal reception for couple of seconds throughout the day. First the Internet cuts off ("4G" mark disappears from the status bar) then all signal bars are goneand after a second or two it comes back just fine. Did anything like this happenes to you?
The same SIM card works fine in Samsung phone in the same spots.
I sent my phone for repair, it came back with replaced PCB but the issue is still there.

Hi,
Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm having the same issue. Random complete drops of signal for a few seconds.
I'm also having issues with the radio in the phone. This last week I purchased a different phone to see if the issue was my cell connection. The replacement phone worked much better and faster on a LTE connection in the same locations. My issue is same as OP but I also lose LTE+ frequently and the speed and throughput drop to <1mb/s. Love this phone but getting frustrated with it. I'm running stock OOS, unlocked bootloader with root.
I have also same problem and I tried
this
1. Open dialer
2. type *#*#4636#*#*
3. Select phone information
4. Select "LTE only" from
"set preferred Network type"
5. Back
6. Done
Now I don't have this problem
Signal an Internet running great.
Maybe it's caused by inability to talk correctly with closest mobile station, does this happen everywhere you are or just at a certain place or country? Same with different operator/SIM-card? I'm not having these problems here in Sweden using Vimla/Telenor as operator (unless I of course step into a bunker ?)

I'm in Romania and using Telekom as operator. I've checked that the LTE bands that the operator uses are supported by the phone. I would get the signal drops even when having full reception. For now I've tried setting LTE only as suggested above, and am currently waiting to see if the issue persists.
I was able to resolve this matter. It was down to incorrect network settings (APN and such). It turned out my mobile operator didn't have the right defaults for OnePlus. I called them, entered manually the settings they gave me and the disconnects stopped.

That's normal and caused both by external factors like the cell towers and their power management, and also by the phones chipset/radio power management. Having maximum signal strength at all time would cause extreme battery drainage on the phone.

Yes, but it's not normal for on Los my signal to disappear. On OOS, my signal bar is always solid white, on LOS I can have LTE, and then the signal bar will grey out. Pretty sure it's ROM related since it only happens on LOS

Then it's probably a bug in some subroutine, yes. Not much we can do about it, other than hope someone discovers the fault in the source code, probably somewhere in the RIL integration code.

This is not about poor signal, it's about losing signal completely, like going from full to none instantly, and the inability to access the internet or make a call for a few seconds.
You're right, that sounds more like the RIL crashing and restoring itself.
I've tried all tips and tricks mentioned in this thread but the problem persists. I'll send the phone for repairs.
I had the same - going from full bars to grey and back in 20 seconds. None of the repairs worked, it was down to network settings causing some recycle process every 2 hours or so.

For anybody still having such problems, I got my issue fixed in the end also. It was a network-related but not caused by wrong APN settings. I filed a complaint to my operator and after whatever magic they did there, I didn't encounter this issue anymore.

I've had this on all CM/LOS roms on all my OnePlus phones and Samsung phones. I've been complaining about it for such a long time but no one cares or blames the carrier.
I just stick to the original os now as I cannot rely on my phone if it constantly drops signal.
I think it has to do with the way LOS interprets the signal detail from the chip vs OOS.

I just stick to the original os now as I cannot rely on my phone if it constantly drops signal.
I think it has to do with the way LOS interprets the signal detail from the chip vs OOS.

Same here. Also happened on my G3, but ironically didn't have this issue on the Nexus series..
