I've been having this really annoying issue where all of a sudden I just wont get a data connection even though there is a strong 4g signal. Any app that uses the internet will say there is a connection error, it just completely stops. I've been getting around it by having to turn on airplane mode and then turning it off. After I do that, everything starts connecting again, but it is insanely annoying. It seems to be getting more persistent, which is why I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing and if so, how did you fix it?
Thank you.
Oh and just in case, I'm running completely stock non rooted.
I've had the same problem the past few days. Don't know why & it happens fairly randomly. Only way to get around it is to connect to WiFi or turn data off/on.
Are you on KK or LP? Its happening to me on LP. I live in CO and its even worse closer to Denver I go.

I'm on Lollipop. I think it happened on KK as well but it's definitely happening way more now.
I'm on Lollipop. Just started having the issue a few days ago.
I'm in Atlanta, both my devices have sluggish Internet def not what I'm used to. I called into tech support twice, was told they are doing network moderization....yea ok

Having the same issue here in Atlanta was told it should be sorted out by today. I'm also using lollipop stock but rooted. In the meantime ive been forcing 4g by using the lte dialer since I've been having frequent changing to edge network since the update, but I'm still having issues with a strong 4g connection especially YouTube app.

Some serious hacking went on yesterday. I'm assuming some of the slowness was related. Many online services were slow and United Airlines was take down completely.

I have the same problem. I had it on my s5 too
T-mobile
from what i heard t mobile was doing some cleaning up of files or upgrades i called them since i was getting 3g.
I too have been seeing the same data issue. It could just be coincidental timing but within days of loading LP I started having the issue. Even flashed the ROM again in case it was a bad flash.
As stated in OP I toggle airplane mode to fix. Annoying for sure.
PopRocks v5
T-Mobile
Bump.
I have been having this issue too ever since upgrading to Lollipop. I've had it on 2 versions of Poprocks and I now it have while using Rapture. Extremely annoying.
I got around it by rebooting the phone. I did not think of airplane mode or data on/off, i'll give that a shot. I was actually thinking maybe it's an APN issue, but no one in here mentioned that. For what it's worth I live in Southern California.
This issue is really starting to annoy me. One thing I do with my phone is stream music while I'm driving, and now I'm having all kinds of issues once my phone drops off wifi & has to switch to data. My music just stops playing & I have to toggle airplane mode to fix the issue, which isn't fun/easy while driving. Plus, when I do that my phone doesn't reconnect to my car's bluetooth. Ugh! I sure hope this gets fixed soon.
As an update, months later and I still have data drops all the time. Really annoying and it has definitely soured me on the Note 4. First with the GPS issue I was having (that was only fixed after getting a replacement) and now this data issue.
They only doing this too trick us into getting the note 5.

After reading the new info on the Note 5, I'm not all that impressed. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a good device, but I wasn't really impressed with the changes. I'm sure it'll still be a great phone, but I don't know if I'm willing to risk another year of the data issue. I may go with the new Nexus this year.
I've had this problem (5 bars, but can't even ping 8.8.8.8... but if I toggle data off & on, I instantly connect & usually get fast transfers) all the time (Fort Lauderdale area) for months, but it seems to have been particularly bad for the past few weeks.
Is this T-Mobile's fault? Or do Note 4s on other carriers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc) have the same problem?
My theory:
* The number of bars is determined mostly by the signal strength of the nearest tower
* The phone doesn't necessarily use the same tower for data that it uses for voice & SMS (in fact, when it's using HSPA+, it HAS to be simultaneously connected to two different towers).
* The modem firmware resists changing towers when there's an active data session unless it totally and completely loses sight of the tower it's currently using for data. I'm not sure whether it's the fault of Android or GSM network design, but data hand-offs seem to be "hard" rather than "soft", and always involve a connectivity break of at least a few seconds before the new one gets established.
* Thus, you can get into a situation (say, by driving a half mile or so) where the phone establishes a data connection with one tower, you drive *just* far enough away that it can still hear the original tower -- but can't actually complete a transmission without unrecoverable errors -- but voice & SMS messages go through the nearby tower. When you toggle data, it breaks the old data session, and establishes the new one from the strong nearby tower.
One thing that appears to have changed (in South Florida, at least) over the past few months: I always had problems with losing data connections while driving unless I disabled LTE, but NOW it appears to be doing the same thing even when GSM/WCDMA only is selected instead of GSM/WCDMA/LTE. It's like they figured out what was making LTE dysfunctional, then went out of their way to make HSPA equally dysfunctional.

For the last three days (since Monday really), I'm experiencing random data drop outs on my Nexus One running CM6. for reference, I'm using the 4.06 radio
This is a new issue, just started Monday. I'm in an 3G area - normally when I fire up a data connection, the indicator goes from 3G to 'H'. But when the issue presents itself, it alternates between H and 3G.
But nowadays, randomly, data just *stops* working..normally for a few minutes at a time. If I enter and exit Airplane mode, it seems to go back to working.
Anyone experiencing something similar? Also, the issue is appearing at different parts around Portland Oregon - in locales miles away form each other (like 20 miles away).
I'm on T-Mobile. This issue has never happened before Monday - for me, T-Mobile's data network has been rock solid in the areas I frequent.
I'm on T-Mo in Washington, and was seeing similar probs.
I think T-Mo may be doing some maintenance?

Been happening the last few weeks for me too (CM6 and MIUI), luckily I had my regular GPS.
Restarting, flight mode, 2G, alternate APN...nothing brings back data. Probably a network issue like the above poster mentioned.
Ok, So far I've been loving this phone, no hiccups, no reboots, no problems and loving the battery life.
I live in a 3G only area so I have the phone set to CDMA only all the time. Last night I was having a chat on Google Talk and my 3G dropped, I figured, meh, it's just gonna need a reboot or let it sit for a while to come back. Well it sure didn't.. that was 12 hours ago from posting this. I've tried every toggle known to man, reboots, etc.. Nothing will give me my 3G back. Can someone please help me to prevent from having to call Verizon and go through all the reboot your phone, return to factory settings crap. Then end up with a factory like-new phone when my phone isn't even a month old yet. Wifi is working fine here at work, but I need my 3G.
Mine is screwed today as well... If it takes a factory data reset, I'd just as soon do it on my own. Update to fix isn't due until November... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
Anyone with any real solutions? All the reboots/battery pulls/airplane mode toggles have been performed.
Thanks!
GLiDE

I thought so, but other people with smartphones around here on verizon aren't experiencing any issues. So I've eliminated network issues as the problem here.
yeah i think must be a network issue
Yep, same here... I even have a guy in another department in the plant with a Bionic and his is working just fine while mine sits brainless. it's definitely not a network issue for mine. aCk!!!
A new SIM card later... DoH
I have been dropping data connections also and it takes awhile to come back on sometimes. Usually if swith from 3g to 4g and such it comes back but I am getting frustrated with it. Other than that I love it.
Yeah, I'm really getting sick of the dropped 3G too, I can't figure out a pattern to it either, just drops out of nowhere sometimes.
I am having the exact same issues......I have power cycled, done battery pull, etc. Does not seem to be a network issue as 3G can be working fine one minute, not working the next, then go back to working again 5 minutes later. The duration almost seems random in nature. Very frustrating. Other than that I love the phone.
Same as pretty much everyone else. Really intermittent data connection problems. Have gone through 3 handsets so far.

Isn't there a number that can be called that updates your phones tower info?
Just found it. Try dialing *228. Not sure if it does anything or not but I have been dropping 3g too. So far my signal is much stronger but time will tell.
I'm having the same problem, but only at work. The signal fluctuates almost constantly from 4g to 3g with 4bars, to no data connection. Outside I get a stable 4g connection. My T-Mobile phone had a stable but weak signal here.

It doesn't look like its dialing out. However, I am getting a message that my verizion sim card has been updated. So far I have not lost service in places where I would frequently lose 3g. Could be a placebo effect though.
Alright guys here I go I should of posted this on a topic thread I started couple of weeks ago but whatever here it goes and i hope it helps... So I went through 2 hard resets and one new SIM and so far this is he only thing the worked. Called big red and got a level 2? Tech support and since then have had no problems going on couple weeks now... Didn't see anyone mention this in previous posts. go into settings> Battery and data management > make sure you have "background data" and "data enabled" both checked. Hope this helps has for me and i hope I'm not repeating this info

So when I first got the phone I had zero connectivity issues. After about 2 weeks I started having very occasional problems with it taking awhile to re-connect to 4g going in and out of weak signal areas. Now my phone refuses to connect to a mobile data connection of any sort. W T F.....and of course this happens after having the phone for 38 days.
Running Liberty 3 2.0 atm w/ 5.5.886.
What is the latest official release so I can flash to it before calling and *****ing at Verizon?
idk bout the probs you're having other than you're rooted, etc, yada.
i'm still stock, no available updates, running sysver 5.5.886.XT875
Verizon is having nationwide data issues right now. Try switching to CDMA only. If I'm on CDMA/LTE it won't connect to any data but if I switch to CDMA only I at least get 3G.
I was thinking the same thing, I haven't had the data issues that a lot of people have with the Bionic. I was getting 34mbs download speeds this morning on 4G, then when I got to work, no data.....so I did all the known fixes, and still nothing, thought it was my phone until I read about the Verizon issue. Took me a while to get 3G running, but now it seems OK, just no 4G. Hopefully it will be back up soon.
Yup, the outage has been acknowledged by VZW. I think this is the 5th nationwide LTE outage I've experienced since purchasing the Tbolt on launch day back in March. It proves once again that VZW is very good at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
I know that if the network where I work experienced 5 major outages in 7 months people would be fired. I'm sure the lower level engineers are hard at work fixing the problem but the Director or VP of wireless networks needs to go .... now.
As an operations guy who runs applications for a major health care system I know I plan changes in stages and must present and document validated back out procedures before I get to do the change. The change control process at VZW is SERIOUSLY BROKEN. I know what you network engineers are thinking .... someone fat-fingered a change. Nope, the severity and duration of this outage (and the ones before it) are a sign of much bigger problems.
I never thought I'd see the day where I seriously contemplated leaving a carrier because of network unreliability. Bad coverage is one thing but not knowing how to run a major network speaks to bigger problems.
Tried switching to cdma only first thing and no connection there either. Guy right beside me with a Samsung Charge was still getting 4g with 20mbps down.
For those keeping track you can add another data outage today. I'll echo my comments from above ... VZW is great at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
Oh yeah, wasn't it Verizon that used to make fun of AT&T's network reliability? Sounds like they are following AT&T's footsteps. I just came back from Chicago which should be a strong 4G area, and I kept losing my data connection and my phone was already set to CDMA only. At home in the southeast I will occasionally lose data connectivity but not as bad a what I experienced in Chicago.
My wife and i both got droid 4 over the weekend. Mine has never had an issue. She's on her second d4 and is still having connectivity issues. She's threatening to get the stratosphere for the same price if it doesnt fix soon. Verizon support did du,bass read from a manual powercycle your phone tech support. I dont think they fixed anything.
Most of the time she and i both have full bars, steady 3G in blue text.
Occasionally hers will go white 3G, bars will go down she'll get 1x or no data. It takes forever for her data to restore.
We replaced the first phone that did this. Second phone did the same within a day.
What are the valid possible causes?
1) two bad phones in a row?
2) bad data provisioning on her account?
3) she uses the phone more than me and this device sucks at restoring 3g after a call?
4) bad sim card? (They did recycle it)
5) bad luck (she's destined to have a 2010 epic 4g...er i mean a brand new stratosphere).
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk
Actually, I believe it sounds like it's trying to connect to 4G. The SIM card is only used for 4G connectivity, so that should not be the problem. Try disabling the 4G radio, and see if that improves things. If it helps, my phone does it too, although the connectivity is generally restored in about 10-15 seconds. I believe it is something the phone does to help save battery. (From my observation, this does not happen in CyanogenMod9/ICS).
Go to Settings => Data Saver => and make sure it is turned off.
Go to Settings => Wireless and Networks => Mobile Networks => Network Mode => and select "CDMA Only" to disable the 4G radio. (It will also significantly save battery in non-4G areas)
Let me know the results.
Good Luck,
OmniUni
Unfortunately not that. Ive spoken to multiple techs. They said they are going to overhaul the profile on the account (they doubt it is the device if 2 phones in a row had the same issue).
I just switched sim cards between the devices and am waiting to see which phone craps out first. Unless vzw fix it remotely before i am done.
Will report back in case people have similar issues, but open to any suggestions.

In my experience, and apparently many others', some Samsung phones are notorious for constantly dropping data. I had the Droid Charge (three refurbs total) and the Stratosphere, all of which constantly dropped data and if tethering, would not reconnect. Also, the keyboard on the Stratosphere is terrible.
Sorry to hear about the Droid 4 not working out. I've found mine to be extremely reliable in holding onto a connection. I hope you resolve whatever is causing the issue, but be warned, getting a Stratosphere could land you with even more data dropping frustrations.
I'm not even 100% if the N4 has it so can anyone verify this? I have horrible service on the first floor of my house (especially my couch smh...) so I need to know that this works
If it's the T-Mobile version, then yes you have Wi-Fi calling.
Yes it does
I got the white note 4 from tmobile on monday. Yes it does have wifi calling. It works well.
WiFi Calling Not Working
Just got my Tmo Samsung Galaxy Note 4 today after Pre-Ordering and Jumping from the Note 3. Decided to go with the SIM Card that came with the Note 4. Got the phone all set up and connected to WiFi and received "ER081 - Unable to connect" Error. Called Tmo and after checking my 911 info and verifying the new SIM Card was registered and such I got patched to Tech Support and reverifed everything. Popped out the battery while he reconnected the phone to the Tmo Network, same error. I have the Tmo Asus CellSpot along with another router as well, same error on both routers. The funny thing is they attempted to send some type of Verification Text Msg and I received "Content not supported" on my end. Anyone else having simular issues? I have good signal throughout my house, its just the matter of a major feature not working on a brand new phone. Tech Support said to give it till morning and call back if it still is not working. I managed to find that using another phone as a hotspot actually allowed me to get wifi calling...strangely though the cellular signal did not grey out.....when wifi-calling is enabled as preferred on others' note 4s, do your cellular signal stay on too?!
My Wifi calling took overnight to become active, probably because I'm a new customer and my account was still being provisioned. I have both the Wifi and cell signals in my notification bar.
People with the ER081....
You can try to following:
If your connected to your Wifi Network.
Go to Phone - Setting - Call - Wifi Calling - Switch it off and then back on.
This would re-enable the wifi calling feature and you will see the error go away.
Not sure why it gives the ERO81 code, but I have it come up as well.

First thing I tried. No joy. But, the problem seems to be intermittent and not permanent for me.
My problem is a little different. I get the wifi calling icon, but when I make a call, the other party can't hear me. When I turn it off, everything is A-OK. I'm not sure how to remedy this.
Call t mobile and tell them when new Sim card was activated WiFi calling was not set up perfect. Then before last step tell them to refresh you on network.
NOTE 4
I had an issue with my text messages using the SIM card that came with the phone. I returned to the store and they told me there have been issues with those Sim cards that are ISIS enabled due to the security measures. They gave me a non ISIS one and now mine works flawlessly.
I'm getting frequent Er081's on my TMobile Note Edge. I've tried 3 different ISPs with speeds from 10m-500m, tweaked the QOS and COS on each, multiple wifi's etc.
It will usually initiate the call. But it won't be long before call just drops, anywhere from 15-60 mins in. My calls are always long (>30mins), and I've yet to normally terminate a call. Of course I'm now getting asked what's going on.
On one occasion, the ER081 stayed on the drop-down and wouldn't go away until I rebooted phone (Edge).
IMHO this is a wonderful feature, but TMo is not ready for primetime on this one? Is it true Note 3's and older phones work fine?
