Hello everyone, I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and about to buy a new mobile, I'm not looking for superb high end devices, so I was going with the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, but after reading more about the glass breaking issue, I wanted to review more options, so I found this one, Motorola Moto X 2014 (2nd generation). All I need is to hear your opinions as users, any issues? Is there a better option for almost the same price? Any comment is appreciated.

The moto x is a high end device. There are some good deals on it and the price has come way down. If you want to save money look at the moto g. It's probably the best bang for your buck.

I meant by superb high end devices those very new ones, Galaxy S6, iPhone 6, HTC One M9, etc..
Moto X 2014 is very good for me as specifications, as well as the price. Regarding the Moto G, it's kinda close to the S3 Mini (as far as I remember).
Do you think it is worth waiting for the 2015 version? Not to buy it, but for a price cut for the 2014 one.

It's already cut. Have you been to the moto maker page? Originally it was 550-600. You can get it for 399 until the 12th. The m9, g4, and s6 have better hardware. They're also newer. I would put the iPhone 6 the s5 the moto x the m8 and g3 in the same boat. You said you were looking at compact phones. That's why I listed the moto g. There's a big size difference in the z3 compact and the moto x.
Can you link me to the page you are talking about?
Well, I'm looking for a small sized mobile, but with high specs, I'm not demanding latest hardware, but some high ones, so the Xperia Z3 Compact was my perfect device until that glass issue. I really dislike the trend of making those large screens and even getting larger and larger.

I was curious about the smallest flagship phone you could get. The nexus 5 is also a good choice. It's right at 5 inch.

However the nexus 5 is now discontinued. It is no longer sold on the nexus website. So that is something to keep in mind.

It's in my list. Though, I have a concern on its battery. For example, GSM Arena's battery endurance rating is 38 for Nexus 5, 42 for Galaxy S3 Mini, 48 for Moto X 2014, while Z3 Compact is 101! Of course they may not be perfect or whatsoever, but it gives an indication.
You may say okay, your main request or feature is a compact device, but 5" and 5.2" are not that much far, are they?

I am eyeing the Motorola X as a successor to my current SGS4. Should I buy? Or should I wait for the next MX (X2?)?
I am looking into the Developer Edition. Motorola has a horrible reputation for updates (Atrix, Droid), but they have started keeping up with the X, I dont want the Lenovo sale to mess it up.
I am pretty engrossed by the features it provides, but the Nexus 5 is also an option...
If you've been reading the buyout then the impression is that Lenovo will not interfere with it and let Motorola continue its development.
The S4 is a pretty powerful phone, it have bigger screen, higher resolution, much better camera, microSD and removable battery which the Moto X doesn't have. The Moto X is well optimized, with stock Android, good form factor that is easy to use with one hand, and come with useful features. They are two different experience. You'll just have to see what suit you more and what you're looking for in a phone.
If you are willing to flash custom rom for the S4 and don't care about the touchless control features, you might not need to get a Moto X.
I much prefer the color calibration on the Moto X AMOLED display, it's not over-saturated and have more accurate white tone to me. Also while the S4 display is 1080p, its screen still not RGB pixel arrangement, while the Moto X display is.
The Motorola sale won't impact the less than a year it has left for updates....so that should not factor into your decision.

I will be using this phone for the next two years, so the buyout will affect me. Motorola will just be Motorola, but without the Google partnership. That can hurt a lot. I am pretty impressed with the moto x, and I love the touchless controls, that's why I considered it over the nexus 5...

You can use the phone for 10 years....but with the unofficial 18 months of updates Google started....the Moto x has less than a year left to get updates.....no matter who owns the Moto x. The sale won't change anything that would or wouldn't happen in that short period. So weather Google owns Motorola or anyone else....updates will be done for the X before the sale matters to Motorola.
Get what I'm saying? Custom roms will be the Moto x's only updates by the time any changes happen at Motorola.

Again...if you want the x....get it. The new owners may or may not mess up Motorola some day....but it won't affect the X....it will already be done getting updates by then.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
The truth is if you but any other flagship that isn't a Nexus you are not guaranteed long updates period either. The fact that the Moto X have stock Android may give it longer update period than other phones with bloated UI. There is no reason why it should stop getting updates just because Lenovo bought it.

It's worthing buy the 16gb moto x even if I lose 16gb of the 32 of the xperia S?
And I consider too the xperia zl so what do you think about the zl and the moto x?

With the Moto X 16GB, you will only get 11GB of usable space. You can try to use some cloud storage to offset your data. You get 50gb of Google Drive storage when you buy a new Moto X.
Sony just announced end of life support for the Xperia S, no reason to get it: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...or-the-xperia-s-xperia-ion-xperia-u-and-more/
The hardware of the Xperia S is not very good anymore. I've used the Snapdragon 3 chip on the American version of Galaxy SII, it's not very smooth and you might even struggle to play some 1080p contents. I can tell you from experience the Qualcomm S4 chip and KitKat 4.4 on the MotoX vs S3 chip and 4.1 with bloated UI on the Xperia S is night and day difference. Even the Moto G is a faster phone than the Xperia S and have latest version of Android.
The ZL on the other hand is a better phone, it have microSD support. It have 1080p screen, but poor viewing angle though. I don't think Sony will update their phones as well compared to Motorola, even though they are being bought by Lenovo I still think they will keep up with the updates. I love the Moto X for the stock Android experience, there are lots of things unique about it, but if storage space is your biggest needs then ZL may be better for you.

Then I think that I will go for the ZL if I can find in the Internet a motox of 32gb I'll buy it If not the ZL thanks

The moto x is a decent phone. I got one in a trade and I like it, but the screen is too small for me. After using a note 2 it is hard to go to a smaller screen.
The nexus 6 was just announced and it looks to be a beast. Why was the reason you pulled the trigger on the moto x instead of waiting for the nexus 6 ? My reason is I knew it was going to be expensive... Second off all 5.9 is too big. I understand the 805 chip is better, but the 801 is really not that far off ? Do you regret buying your moto x ? I would like to know every ones opinion
I went with Moto X because I wasn't sure whether the Nexus 6 was going to be 5.2" or 5.9". I figured that with the delivery and the return period that I could check out the Moto X and return it if the Nexus 6 was a 5.2" phone. I love everything about the Nexus 6, except the size. I'll be keeping the Moto X. 5.2" is almost too big, 5.9" as your only offering is just completely stupid imo. I understand that there are some people out there think that bigger is better, but I'm willing to bet that a majority aren't interested in a phone that large. Polls have shown this.
1) size - 5.9 is outside of my consideration
2) personalization - loving my teak back
Though I do wish moto would've added Qi charging to the X.

You just nailed it! If the new nexus was 5.2", it would be competing directly with the Moto X. You chose the option best for you, and for that, you are a good cat!
Size
Seriously, Motorola has 3 new devices. They only needed one.
Moto X design language and customization. Droid Turbo hardware including screen size and resolution, Nexus 6 pure android support and the 65 GB memory size availability. Put those elements of the phones together and the single device would be better than any one of the three.
Size, phablets are a blight on society  If the Nexus 6 were <5.2 I would've considered it, although it would be tough to give up my leather back
And the fact that, while Android L will add most of these, I find that the moto additions to stock android to be extremely value add.
Size is the true factor. In hind sight I would have likely gone with the turbo.

Size and Bamboo!
Once I started reading that the Nexus would be designed based of the X, I figured why wait and also the bamboo back is just awesome.
You do lose quick Android updates, but to be honest, this thing stock is just as good as any phone I've ever used.
I've been spoiled by CM ever since I've had an Android device, but couldn't be happier with my choice to get the Moto X.
I went with the X for the size and close to stock Android feel. That nexus 6 is just too damn big.
5.9 too much, too expensive compared to the X, dont need all that battery, too much screen on QHD
The X is all i need, enough battery and moto maker.
And yes the 805 and the 801 are pretty much the same
I went with the Moto X since I needed a new phone. With today's announcement, I'm glad I bought it. The N6, being 5.96 inches in screen size is so darn big. The price is too high. For 64gb, I would be spending probably $700. I could get a financing plan through T-Mobile but still, that's expensive. Being a tech geek though, it's still tempting
The thing n6 has is the better camera sensor, imx214. Moto X has imx115 or whatever (older). N6 has OIS also. Also, the fact n6 has a 64gb option is good. Let's not forget lte band 12
I'll wait until 64bit chips and 4gb ram phones are out. QHD will probably be the standard next year

As someone earlier said, the Nexus 6 is essentially a Moto X Note. You have multiple size options and price points, Motorola played this one well. Moto G, Moto X, Nexus 6
For us crackflashers/hackers/wannabe Developers it is a bummer since the Moto X is not unlockable and rootable (atleast not yet). However Motorola was smart not to make a phone that would compete directly with the one they just created....with better specs.

You could even say that theres the Moto X 2013 for someone looking for a cheaper, smaller and still very very good flagship phone.
So you have the Moto E & Moto G for budget/entry devices, the X 2013 for cheaper and smaller flagship, the X 2014 for the new flagship device and the Nexus 6 for a phablet
After all every Motorola phone its pretty much a Nexus device
For those who want woodback for their Nexus 6, ToastMade will eventually release a woodback for it, so no worry there.
I actually was looking forward to buying the Nexus 6 as backup device for my Moto X, to use as a tablet and backup phone. At $649 I would get it as my primary device, which I will not since it's too large, but not as a backup device. So I bought a used Nexus 7 for ablet instead.
For back up phone, I think I will just get the Sprint Moto X 2013 and GSM unlock it, or a Nexus 5.
6 inch screen is way too big. Super happy with my moto x and leather back and green accents. As everyone else said, I will miss the unlocked boot loader and all that but I can live without it. Stock moto x is a great phone.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
The design of the Moto X just really appeals to me more than the Nexus 6 did, from what I could tell of the many leaks and teasers. There's something wonderfully different about having a high-tech phone with a visibly wooden back. The Nexus 6 is just another plastic device. As soon as I found out the Nexus was going to be closer to phablet size I knew it wasn't for me. Moto X is a great size for me.

No, you don't!
Previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy S 3 International, originally decided to wait to see what the next Nexus was all about.
Saw that it was a phone for whales, bought Moto X.
Speaking of which, whats this Pure edition stuff people keep mentioning about?
Unfortunately, I will not be purchasing the phablet, it is simply to big for my taste and small hands. I was gutted when the rumors of it being 6 inches ended up being true. So, I am now lost as to what other phones to look into as I would like to upgrade my Nexus 4.
What are some phones with similar specs to the Nexus 6 without the ginormous size? I travel quite a bit so a good camera is a must.
Cheers!

Was once the best phone you couldn't buy.
Now it isn't the best phone, the company selling it has the worst customer support in the industry, the Q/C is no bueno...and...wait for it...you still can't buy it even if you wanted to.
Posting their "pre-order" 2 days before Nexus6 is just monumentally stupid timing.
My first recommendation would be the Moto X. I just got mine and it is one seriously amazing device. Same look and feel as the N6, stock Android, unlocked bootloader if you get the Pure Edition... It got kind of a bad rap for its battery, but believe me, it's not as bad as its rating would have you believe. I can get 6 hours screen time, no problem. I can't recommend it enough.
Another option would be the Nexus 5, which is still a beast of a phone. It definitely has at least another year of life left, especially with Android L on the horizon which makes it a completely different phone. I just flashed L on it last night, and it makes me want to use it as my daily driver again, even though I just bought the iPhone 6 and 2014 Moto X. You can't go wrong if you get the N5.
If you are in the US, droid turbo is a good choice

Hey guys i know people are going to have very different opinions but what do you guys think i should do? I really like the look of moto x and like the fact that i can customize the look in moto maker. S5 doesnt really have any huge features that i use. The only thing i would miss is the camera as i take pics of my 10 month old son.
moto x has the cool notification thing and stuff. And the fact i have the £100 off promo code. I would be looking at tue 32gb model and can get around £260 for my S5.
So is it worth buying the moto x and selling the s5?

I can tell you as a moto x owner, its a great piece of hardware IF, if don't mind the camera producing barely adequate photos and below adequate battery life. If you don't mind these two then its perfect for you but I do suggest you get the turbo charger, probably the best little battery solution if you don't mind carrying a charger
Cant the camera be sorted out using a different camera app? I heard the camera app on the moto x is a bit pants. The camera and battery are the only 2 things holding me back right now. If i can get a full day at work out of the phone then i would be happy with the battery

The two phones are very similar, but completely different. Almost exactly same size, AMOLED screen, same processor. Samsung is touchwiz SAMSUNG environment (I have a SAMSUNG tablet) with every feature possible stuffed in someplace, but with the chance of lag. Motorola is Android, with some neat interaction features that you can load or disable. Moto X camera and screen are fine, but the Samsung screen and camera are a little better, Samsung has a microSD slot. Samsung has odd plastic materials that you throw in a case to cover. Motorola has ultra-premium build with custom materials that you don't want to cover. Do you want a super-loaded estate that can carry anything you need, but is not so much fun to drive or look at, or an ultra-light stripped-down sports car with premium finish? They will both get you to work.

From my reading about the Moto X 2014 camera; it pretty good. Only in low light situations is were it has trouble. Other then that; the pictures are " pretty close" to that of the iPhone 6 in quality.

Yeah my problem is ive had 2 phones since the LG G3 was released. I had the G3 and got rid of it due to it shutting itself off (which happened to my gf's G3 too) and then got the S5 a couple months later. We all have different needs and requirements from phones, but I will personally state the Moto X2 is the finest phone I've owned so far. I've never owned a contract carrer phone, but have owned the Moto X 2013, Nexus 5, Galaxy S III, and now the Nexus 6 but this phone beats all. Battery life has not been an issue for me - with moderate screen on time I'm getting 24hrs until a recharge is necessary.
Now's the time to make the switch if you can take advantage of the $140 discount being offered today until 5PM CST...
Thanks for the help everyone any more info on the battery and camera of the moto x would be welcome. If i k ew how to upload pics of my S5 battery usage i would ask for an idea of how long you think the moto x battery would last in comparison lol.
Oh and i think us guys in the uk may have less options in the moto maker compared to you guys across the pond. Dont quote me on that though. Just very hard to tell what the colours look like without a real world screen shot.

Got the models mixed up! Apple and Samsung! Yes, think you might like the Moto X 2014 better then the Samsung Galaxy S5 since Samsung customizes their launcher and the look of the back cover is sort of cheesy vinyl but that all up to you to make the call to switch! $150 off is the equalizer if however, you choice to do the switch! What a decision to make!
I've had the GS4 and this MotoX. I can tell you without a doubt, after using it,I would jump on the S5. The sd card, the display, the battery, and camera, its all superior. The sd card alone is worth the lag that touchwiz gives. That said, this is the fastest phone I've ever touched.

Take a look at the thread under general of photos of peoples phones. It will give you a good idea of what the combinations look like. 2 or 3 leather, 4 wood, and 10 or 12 colours with white of black front and 8 or 10 trim hi-lights.
So do you guys think selling my s5 to get a moto X is worth it? Or am i just spending an extra £100 for nothing? Lol so undicided at the moment its driving me nuts lol

Same processor, same RAM, same screen... though I find the S5 better. Worse battery life by far, worse camera, no SD card, no water proofing, no USB 3.0, no awful fingerprint reader. Then again, you gain a better build and some exterior features, along with the active screen and other software stuff. Don't know about you, but I don't spend much time looking at the back of my phone.
If you put your phone in a case, then there's no doubt you should stay with the S5 and invest when a real upgrade comes along. The Droid Turbo 64gb maybe, this I'd say no.
Anyone else got any opinions on selling my galaxy S5 to get a Moto X? Im really torn at the moment and really want the moto x for its beauty and vanilla android experiance but am still a little worried about battery life and the screen issues ive read about.

All I can say is that you'll love the Moto X. If you have the money, go for it. I had a Moto X for a week and returned it. Now, I'm already missing it a lot. I didn't return it because I didn't like it; I returned it because it is a pain in the ass for me to get the 32gb version and it was costly to import. So, now with the 100 euros discount, I'm definitely gonna order one through Moto Maker and get it delivered here through a mail forwaring service. I was going to get the Nexus 5 32gb instead because of the reasons I pointed earlier, but now it's a no brainer.
The software features and build quality of it are impressive.
At this point, I had never considered buying a Samsung phone. If you like yours, nothing against it, but from my experience in store, the build quality and Touch Wiz is like a repellent.

Yeah im with you on the samsung hate lol, i only got the S5 because the LG G3 was just a nightmare device for me. Dont get me wrong the G3 is a nice phone its just a shame that it was riddled with overheating issues and random shut offs etc.
I think i am going to get the moto x now, i just need to decide on what back to get out of the cool colours and the neutral colours lol

I had the standard soft touch plastic back. It is really great, if you like it. Though, this time I'm going for the leather, since the customization factor is a big one on the Moto X.

Personally, if offered the 2 phones, I would take the Moto X. If offered the 2 phones, but I had to pay an extra $100 for the Moto X, I would take the S5. In your case, I would sit tight for a while. You have any interest in a Nexus 6? That is a different beast.

Understood.
If you do get the X, the options for wood or leather do make it special. Nobody else has that. Natural leather appears to be ageing poorly, but the dyed versions are holding up well.
I have a 32GB pure edition coming next week. I'm also looking at the Xperia Z2 or Z3. The awesome battery life and camera are very attractive. I have a 2 year old and live to take more quality pictures. The Moto X seems to be a better Android experience in all other aspects. I would love to hear from someone who has used both.

The z2 is going to take better pictures and have better battery life
The Moto is above average in both departments but not as good as the Z2
I like the moto form and size. Easier to handle than the z2 and I love all the moto assist apps

No but I switch phones so often it's hard to become attached lol
I do really like the Moto X though.. Nearly untouched Android is very nice and like I said the moto assist apps are actually useful
It's been less than 6 hours with moto x so not sure yet but I used Z3 about a week until today. Personally I have small hands and Z3 was relatively big and heavy. I know it's a very small difference. Today when I held moto x I felt much more comfortable than Z3. Hardware wise, Z3 is a beast, top notch flagship this moment. But, I will return Z3 tomorrow because top spec is not all important anymore for me. My fixed N5 should arrive tomorrow so I have to decide btw moto x and N5. I was concerned about the size and weight increase of moto x but actually they have done really good job.
I ordered a Z2 also. Will see which one wins out. Camera is a big deal since I want to capture the precious moments of my little one. The near pure Android experience of the moto x does sound awesome.
