Both Expansys and the swedish retailer dustin have the new dockingstation in stock. I have ordered one to be used as a computer replacement in my summer cottage. It has two usb ports and vga/video output.

I received it today
It comes with no extra charger, so you have to use your old one. It has 2 usb ports, 1 vga, 1 s-video and 1 composite port. Oddly enough it has 2 mini-usb ports. One for syncing and one for charging. I thought that it would be enough with the sync port as it charges as well.
It can be abit fiddly to get the Athena in place, but otherwise it works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to change the keyboard layout (swedish) and follow up on the mouse pointer issue. After that is sorted out I have a simplistic PC for visually impare (the text is hughe on a 17" screen).

£69.95!!!!! What a rip-off. I know expansys are expensive but that is a joke (sorry). I think I will wait until they filter thru on to ebay.
I bought it from Dustin for SEK 1024 so I don't think it is a rip-off. They do not have a history of over charging. I suspect a device of this price class have expensive acessories. I am a bit disappointed that it doesnt come with a charger.

One seller used to have the have them on ebay at about the same time that expansys used to have them (although I think that they didn't have the second USB port). However, it looked to me like they were withdrawn because suddenly neither expansys nor this ebay seller had any in stock at the same time. Shouldn't be long before they appear on ebay. I seem to recall they were asking about £30 for it but I could be wrong.

Yes, it does.
can someone find one a bit cheaper? I'd like it for playing around testing external hard discs and accessories with but 70 quid is ridiculous for internet prices. Must be very few of them or something.......wonder who supplies Expansys as you don't seem to see their items on Ebay.
might require 2 chargers for extra battery
The docking station has two mini-usb ports. One for sync and one for charge. When I attach the charger to the charging port, nothing happens. My conclusion is, that the extra charging port is for the extra battery. This would mean that if you want to charge both the Advantage and an extra battery, you would have to attach an extra charger to it. If this is the case, it is even more odd that the docking station didn't come with a charger.
The only explanation I could find, would be that the mini-usb has a limited power capability and wouldn't be enough to charge both unit and battery.
//Johan
Joohan
Try to insert only the battery in its slot and switch between the 2 mini USB ports then see what happens.
USB doesnt have enough amps to charge the Ameo as it is, if you look at the mains adapter its a 1 amp output, usb from pc im sure is only half of that at 500 milli amp. the second mini usb may be to attach a second mini usb to get the full charge, I have an external 2.5 HD and it comes with a usb to two mini usb to boost the current. even then it still strugles, without the external mains adapter, which is 1.4 amps.
I could be wrong, just my oppinion, But I notice this when im in the car using usb charger, it keeps everything runnning, "tomtom" but wont really charge it.

This has been discussed before - it depends on the car charger you are using. The one that came with my Brodit holder happily charges the Ameo while using satnav and screen brightness on full.
Bought it for 100 euros and I like it very much!!
It's standing right here on my desk and I use it everyday. Don't want to go without anymore!!
I bought a couple of these several months ago from DealExtreme.com to use for other USB powered devices.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-re...emergency-power-with-cell-phones-holder-44749
For kicks and giggles, I was curious how much current the things really put out. I connected to my CM7 NC with the NC USB cable and did a dmesg | grep CHARGER
To my surprise, even though DealExtreme claims that these output 1A, the NC said it was receiving 2A! (see attached photo of screen).
When I used a standard Micro-USB cable, the current dropped down to 500mA.
I haven't yet done any sort of extensive testing to see what kind of life I get out of these. If the other specs are correct (a little dubious now), then having 2 of these, fully charged, would be like having an extra internal battery. Not bad for less than $13 ea.
Anyone know how accurate (or inaccurate) the output from the dmesg command is? Is the Nook misrepresenting what it says it's getting from the charger?
I suspect that what you're seeing on the screenshot is not the charging current but that it recognizes the plug type (B&N 2amp) or standard USB (500ma) that is actually plugged in. Nevertheless it still could be a handy gizmo to have around.

When I used a different model of External USB battery with the same B&N NC cable, it registered as 500mA, exactly as that particular model is rated. Though your thought is justifiably skeptical (and I'm an unrepentant skeptic myself), further evidence suggests there's more going on than just detecting the additonal pins in the B&N NC cable.

I believe the standard microUSB cord has a resistor, or circuitry to limit the amperage to .5. The Nook Color has a charging cable with a higher amperage at 1.9, with a special connection so you cannot put it into another device and fry it. Most modern device have a way of limiting the input internally, but the the Nook's cable is unique on the device end to be safe.
If you would like to test this use a standard microUSB and plug it into the Nooks OME wall transformer and measure the amperage. in my tests it always comes out at .5 amps even though the output of the NC's transformer is 1.9 amps.
I use my muti-tester to avoid erroneous software data.
Certaily would like to test this portable charger you mention in your post, for $13 sounds good to me. This would be handy while I am away from wifi and I tether my Android phone to my Nook, the phone could be plugged into this charger, tethering can really burn battery down fast.
Thanks for the tip!

so funny, me too.
Also "CrazyinDigital" from Amazon Canada, even shipped to USA I got a nice Pleather case and a bunch of cables and the silicon cases are decent too. The bulid qualty of the cords is sketchy and the screen protectors don't fit, but I got all the above for $5.19 shipped to the US. I'd pay at least that for the USB cord. (Funny thing the cords say "for Kindle"... gotta laugh.

Given that the USB battery charging specs give up to 1.8A, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense....
In Battery Charging Specification,[40] new powering modes are added to the USB specification. A host or hub Charging Downstream Port can supply a maximum of 1.5 A when communicating at low-bandwidth or full-bandwidth, a maximum of 900 mA when communicating at high-bandwidth, and as much current as the connector will safely handle when no communication is taking place; USB 2.0 standard-A connectors are rated at 1500 mA by default. A Dedicated Charging Port can supply a maximum of 1.8 A of current at 5.25 V. A portable device can draw up to 1.8 A from a Dedicated Charging Port. The Dedicated Charging Port shorts the D+ and D- pins with a resistance of at most 200 Ω. The short disables data transfer, but allows devices to detect the Dedicated Charging Port and allows very simple, high current chargers to be manufactured. The increased current (faster, 9 W charging) will occur once both the host/hub and devices support the new charging specification.

Yeah I might have .5 volts mixed up with amps.. I posted that late last night, dozing off.. lol. sorry for the any inaccuracies.
I did these tests a while back and should have recorded the data and not left them too memory.. and age.. lol.
I initiated theses tests becouse I found it took much longer to charge the Nook with a generic cord even if I plugged it in the Nooks wall transformer that has a higher output. it could just be my cords too.
My apologies if my careless quoting of data led anyone astray. Funny, I am usually a stickler about accurate data. ..
Lesson: Never quote data from memory late and after a glass of wine..

You should have plugged into your fingers. Stop making up nonsense.
Standard microUSB is, well, a standard. And that standard says 500mAh max current. The Nook Color cable is non standard and has 4 extra pins. These extra pins, as well as shorted data pins, tells the Nook Color it can draw 1.9Amps.
Found this external battery with good pricing. Anyone tried this? Does it work with NC?

It certainly should work.
The connections are a little confusing. The male micro-USB coming off the top suggests that you need to connect it to your nook, which would make the whole thing a little unweildy. Also, how is it charged? From a PC? From a AC/USB adapter?

They're only 2000 mAh, but you can connect them to the nook with the proprietary nook USB cable. Even though they're rated at 1A, my nook recognizes as 2A...
Bonus: built in fold up wall charger.
Not-so-bonus: DealExtreme ships from Hong Kong. Delivery time is measured using the geologic time scale.

I actually have one. It works with my EVO, but not the Nook Color. You can look at the reviews for the item and see others have similiar issues with other micro USB devices. I think I'm going to order a M/F micro usb extension cable from ebay....hopefully it helps this work with my NC.
Micro USB M/F Extension
Johnny,
Are you sure its not charging? The output of the device is 800mA, and the output of the stock charger is 2000mA. So although it may be charging slowly, the nook would not report it as charging. Would you be able to plug it in and leave it for a while and see if the battery% increases?
I'm positive it's not charging. The micro USB seems to be slightly different than "standard" and thus, doesn't fit all the way into the port on the NC. I can try one more time when I get home today, but I don't think it'll go.
I wish this wasn't the case and I've tried it a handful of times when I first bought it. I've only been using it on my phone lately...

I'll keep you posted. I had been debating whether or not to buy the cable, but for $5 and I can extend the use of my charger, I finally figured it'd be worth it....that and the fact that I want to help people out here so no one buys the charger itself thinking it'll work.

Interesting topic.
Let me see if I got this straight.

-Also, it gets connected to normal wall plug and through this U charge your NOOK?It can work as alternative nook charger (but for sure in slower rate)??
I bought an Energizer XP2000 for about $35 at an OfficeMax (they're widely available). 2000 mAh capacity, weighs about 2oz, comes with its own cord with six different ends for different devices. I plugged it into my fully-charged Nook at 10,000 ft out of Seattle, watched non-stop video at 70% brightness in Airplane Mode for nearly five hours to Baltimore and still had 58% battery left on my Nook (the Energizer was discharged). Other chargers in the line go up to an insane XP1800 that'll power a LAPTOP for six hours!
The sweet spot for me is probably the XP8000. It's max output is 3500mA vs. 500mA for the XP2000, it's the size of two iPod Classics stacked on one another but weighs a little less and it should keep me going for a looong trip. It's $100 so its not an impulse buy (at least for me) but seems like an essential tool for the long distance traveler.

I use this with my nook. I can't answer any questions related to workability with Android phones. That's not this forum.
While using this device to charge my nook, my nook is completely usable. It will charge my nook when the device is plugged into the wall. It will also charge my nook when it's not plugged into the wall (it is a battery, after all). In either situation, my nook is completely usable when connected to this.

So one of the 6 tips works with an NC? I thought the NC's cord and tip were special to enable the quick charging. Do the Energizer products support this technology?
At dealextreme there is also 3000 battery. Why not using that?

The micro USB tip that comes with the Energizer works fine with the Nook. I don't know about "fast charge" vs. "slow charge" and all that but it definitely works. One SUBSTANTIAL advantage of the XP2000 over the larger capacity models (of the Energizer line) is that you can use any USB-to-mini USB cable, including the one that comes with it, and plug it into either a USB power plug adapter or a USB port on a computer to charge it. The XP4000, XP8000 and XP18000 all require their own power adapter. It's included in the purchase of course but I don't like carrying around another cord. Not a deal-breaker, just a factor.

Well, I said I'd update once I recieved my extension cable, so here it is...
I finally received my extension cable and it allows me to use my Monoprice charger with my Nook, so that's great. In the end, it wasn't needed. I ended up RMA'ing my charger back to Monoprice because the thing had a dull buzz when not being used and a high pitch noise when either charging a device or being charged. I'm happy to report that the new charger works with or without the extension cable on my Nook Color and on my EVO 4G. In the end though, I like the extension cable because it gives me more flexibility when using the charger.

Got it. The slow vs fast charge would be a good thing to know. Can you time a charge with the Energizer unit and one with the stock NC charger? If it can fast charge, the Energizer would make a great addition to the NC.
Thanks either way. The info has been helpful.

You're hooked up to a weak charger. You get that message when the phone can't draw all the current it needs.
I received the same message as the OP as i use my notebook to charge my One though i have only see it once.
John.
I'm having what sounds like the same problem. Plugging in the charger gives me a pop-up message, and then there's a permanent message in the notification area. Does anyone know exactly what is causing this? The charger I'm using is supposed to be able to deliver 2A: if the problem is that actually it can't even deliver 1A then I need to get it replaced; if it's the phone being stupid then it would be helpful to know why it's doing it.

Surely any modern smartphone limits the current that it draws to what it can use?
But actually I wasn't proposing to use it to charge my phone regularly, anyway, I just hooked it up as a test. What I actually want it for is charging an external battery which is capable of drawing a full 2A from a mains charger. If the reason I'm getting the message is because the charger can't deliver even 1A, then I need to know that!
It would also be handy to know what the cause is if I ever do buy an extra charger for the phone... so I can avoid running into the same problem then.
I like my gadgets, i have ordered one of these usb adapters, it show`s the amount of power your phone/device is pulling from the usb port/adapter it has 5 bars showing up to 5 watts or 1000ma.
They are $19 each + $5 for international posting.

John.
HTC assumes the thing on the end of a USB cable can deliver 0.5A unless the data pins are shorted, then it assumes 1A.
I.e., if a charging device doesn't connect the data pins, the phone will only draw up to 0.5A.
I bought another usb adapter, that has the pins shorted inside, you just plug it into your usb adapter and then plug your normal usb cable into it, so you get maximum charge rate from any usb port.

That won't help me with my present situation, as the charger has a hardwired micro-USB plug and nothing else.
Interesting for other situations, though.
If there were something similar that was micro-USB to micro-USB that might work.

It`s a pity you cannot enable/disable the qualcomm quick charge as i prefer a slow charge as fast charging produces more heat and is bad for the battery life as fitting a new battery is an return to htc job, I have heard it`s about a 1/3 faster?.

Yeah it's much faster now after the 4.2.2 update. And also, before the update my phone used to charge in usb mode in both my apple chargers and my extra battery packs. Now, it charges on ac mode, thankfully. This leads me to believe that qualcomm quick charge is turned on because in their website one of the features of this is power source detection (it knows whether it's a usb source or ac).

It's per a support statement from HTC that I found the first time I got that warning:

Apparently it's trying to activate quick charging, and if it can't, you get that notification.

"Fast charging" is simply charging at the AC rate via USB. It's no different than having it plugged into the wall.
The 3 foot cable was confirmed working on the op3 forum, I have not tried that one but I have personally bought and tested the 6 foot and can confirm that it supports dash charging. At 6 bucks this is a very inexpensive option to extend the stock cable. It also fits very tightly and I am not worried about it coming apart. (At least for now.)
Amazon
These are good news! Thanks!
hmm its a pretty long cable, would it affect the charging speed ?
if yes how much in terms of charging from 0-50 and 0-100 compared to the stock cable without extension
I have a 6ft monoprice extension that allows the phone to register dash charge but still only charges at standard rate. It's like the AC adapter can still tell the difference.

It seems to charge quite a bit quicker than the 6ft type C cable I have.

You ever check out an app like Ampere to see what charging rate it registers?

I have but I figured that the app was wrong because it showed that me using my old i-orange micro with a micro to c adapter and my samsung s7 brick that I was charging at the same speed as with the official dash charger (This being Ampere)

that's a bumper, ya im sure the 1+ dash charge cable has some kind of chip. an the USB A cable is a bit different if you look inside of it

I meant with Ampere both these setups show the same.
Samsung + micro + micro to c adapter
Stock + Stock cable
So I figured the app is not reading dash correctly if that other setup states the same speeds.

Well does dash charge work then with the extension?

I'm not sure what you're saying here.
Extension cables work with QC2.0 and 3.0 perfectly fine. I used my monoprice 6ft USB3.0 with my Nexus 6 and it worked fine. Ampere registered about 2300mA with the N6 when quick charging. This was just about the same rating that I achieved with the stock cable and no extension.
The case of the OP3 is different. With the stock cable connected directly to the Dash Charger, Ampere registers about 3300-3400mA. With the 6ft extension in place, the phone shows "Dash Charging" on the lock screen and I get the blue Dash Charge LED charging light, but Ampere only registers about 1300mA charging.
Anyone tried this oppo vooc cable with the dash charge adaptor?

If 1300mA then no Dash. You got yar self an answah
Its about the juice not about the info...
BTW... If you get a 20 ft long "Dash cable'' probably the cable resistance will be so high that you could get max 300mA that's why 1+ will never produce 20ft USB..

I wasn't asking anything. I already know dash charge wasn't happening. I just want people to know that even though the phone registers "Dash Charging" on the lockscreen, it isn't really happening with an extension.
Nobody is asking OnePlus to produce a 20ft dash cable. There's just simply no reason why we shouldn't be able to get a 2M cable. The loss due to additional resistance would be negligible.

I personally hate the 1m (and even more so when it comes to shorter) cables. Can't play with the phone while charging, because no jacks are ever close enough that the cable reaches the closest seating option (orher than the all present floor ) . Even in office the charger is relatively close, but when I answer the phone the cable is too short.
2m would be perfection for me at least. I know it's too long for some, but then again I'm talking about a choice to order one.
And as biglilsteve said, there is no elecro-physical limit to this 2m cable, and if the heating (if resistance grows the cable heats more) should become an issue the cable could be designed to compensate it with thicker copper (and that would be something like 10%+20% thicker I assume)
3010 mA
Just got the 3m Sabrent extension in yesterday and very pleased with the speed. I'll take it.
Screenshot isn't uploading from my phone for some reason but I got 3010 mA on Ampere.
At this point I'm quite confused about it the ability to use a extension. I want to charge my OP3 comfortably. So if I buy a USB 3.0 extension from Anker, Aukey, Amazon Basics or another brand it will charge I know that. But it will be Dash Charge or Traditional charge? Thanks

Don't know about others, but I personally can tell you dash charge works with the extension mentioned in the OP. You lose a couple hundred mA of charging speed, but still get around 3000 mA, which is the speed that QC3.0 runs. Perfectly acceptable!
