Spent too long and tried to much to try and get videos working properly on my xperia so i decided if i want to watch videos i should buy a proper video player.
But i cant decide between the Zune HD and the Zii?
i assume both will have Dedicated video converter applications
Sony couldnt even tell me which codec or how to put vids on my xperia at all so they sucked.
I cant decide though, Zii or Zune HD?
Zune-hd hands down. Get it.
On the Zune you wouldn't have to worry about an encoding app, since the the zune's chipset has the encoders and codecs built-in. So you could copy over mp4's and it should encode it when it goes to your device from ur comp..and it will down scale an HD video to your screen size. Its just a matter if u want to save space or not. The zune's OS and interface would be much better and solid than anything the zii will currently have..though the zii has more mini pc like functions and seems to be more of a open device..but since the zune is windows..it should support more video formats..and be more compatible with other devices like TV's and your computer, out of the box. The zune has the software and hardware, to do stuff you cant do on a current devices. The zii is more of a enhanced version of something thats already out there..though it still has potential in the future..it seems the zunehd is the future. So I'd either get the zune or wait for a Zii like device that has the the zune's insides with more of a mini pc design, with either a more open windows OS, or a mature android OS.
ARGH! I'm soo pissed at microsoft for not making the Zune HD into a phone! It would be freaking perfect! Add winmo7 to it and BAM! It's perfect! >.> Hopefully the Zune HD 2 shall be a phone with Winmo7.
Hmm yea i think i will go for zune HD although i will wait a bit for some decent reviews once they have both been released
HD!
The ZuneHD definitely! It is the first device to run the Nvidia Tegra, it has a separate processor for each action ie: video, game, music, photos... It is the future of mobile technology!...plus it looks more SOLID
I'm looking to get a Zune HD myself!
just buy core player it has played every video flawlessly on every device i have ever owned.
I dunno the Zii seems interesting with its implementation of Android as well as its "almost-phone" experience just as the iPod touch works. The Zune HD is also drool worthy adn Samsung seem to be working on an "Omnia minus phone" I believe. If the Zune HD doesn't get the Zune software to be far different from before, then I will likely try the Zii eevn though it'll be a lil' more expensive than the Zune HD I think.
Shouldn't really be asking a ? with an answer but Zune still Creative and just M$ putting there name on it? If so then Creative is an absoulutely amazing company and not just when it comes to Audio where there the top market Video aswell thesedays, i have a Zune it's only 4GB but kicks a** for portable movie player.

yea i currently also have a Mozaic Zen and its a awesome little device with OLED screen etc
I'd take the Zii, but if the Zune HD is anything like the Xbox360 experience, it could be worth it too. The Linux-based Zii is interesting too.
But what MS product doesn't look good on paper?
i dont understand why they are only giving it a 480x272 res tho even with tegra?
Yeah I think a 640x360 like on the Nokia 5800 would have been excellent. But the resolution is still good if my Samsung P2 is to be a reference.

I think because to save money and I think that if you have some pixels more you wouldnt see the difference because of the screen size!!!
I wouldnt go for Zune or Zii !! -- I would wait for something more powerfull with tegra -- there are some rumors that samsung is making a phone with tegra!!

If you encode a movie to the ipod's screen size, but choose to keep its aspect ratio, the video will be 480x 270..pretty much the zuneHD screens resolution. You can zoom in on the touch but your cutting off the image. So with the ipod touch in-order to see the full image of the video u have deal with the black bars on the 3:2 wide screen. The zuneHD on the other hand... has a screen thats more suited for watching wide screen videos and doesn't have to stretch the image at all..easily down scaling HD videos perfectly to the screens res..and since its 16:9, so it wont have to mess with the aspect ratio either..so viewing videos on the zune= FTW your right about the making the zuneHD cheaper but its OLED, so I'm sure they chose that over a larger but stardard lcd..it probably evens its self out in cost. Though I havent seen any smaller screen devices with this screens resolution.. thats has this quality.
Yeah MS needs to make this damn thing a phone and give it both US 3G bands.
The Zune HD looks so slick and modern. I prefer HD to Zii. And although Zii is called iPod touch killer, but it still seems it committed to ...
Sorry guys for using this section but it is the only one for the 8.9
I would like to buy one tablet but I'm wavering between the 8.9 and the new 7 plus
the 8.9 is cheaper but the 7 plus can make phone call and got a microsd slot
help me to make this choice
thanks
For what will the tablet be used? Will you still carry a separate phone?
usually I carry another phone but in summer a bring on beach just the galaxy tab 7
If you plan using it as an extension then I think you already have made your mind.
Sent from my GT-P7310
+1 i will go for 8.9 for it bigger screen
I use my Nokia n9 as a phone, my MacBook air as a laptop, my tab 8.9 as a reference material viewer. I think I wouldn't be happy with a 7" screen, my physics books won't view well.
Then again I can't tell until I try it :-D
make phone call is a good features sd the sd slot
I think I will take the 7 plus (7.7 would be perfect but probably will be out on 2012)
I had a 10.1, but sold it for a 7.0 plus, and highly recommend it. The Exynos is screaming fast compared to the Tegra 2. This is especially obvious while playing video.
Video is truly night and day, I can't believe how lousy the Tegra is for that. The 7+ will play any and all video I threw at it. But dang, the size of the 8.9 is perfect. Hopefully Samsung will give it the upgrade and the best of both worlds.

I am a happy owner of an unrooted 7+ and I have yet to run into a 720p video in any codec or bitrate that the little bastard could not run perfectly smooth. I have no RMVB videos but I can't imagine it will have huge issues but if you send me a link for such a video then I will be happy to test it out for you.
As for the topic of the thread:
I have the 10.1 as well and the Tegra 2 is a travesty. It is a horrid and terrible product which should never have been allowed to be used as the reference chip for Honeycomb. For this reason I went with the 7+. If anyone thinks everyone with a 10.1 is cheerful with a Tegra 2 running then you have not watched the threads prior to the nation wide USA release of the 10.1. Even after the 10.1v was confirmed as using the Tegra 2 we still held out a glimmer of hope for the Exynos 4210 and a MicroSD slot. The 7+ has both of these and I even found it at 350$ with 3.5% sales tax at Microcenter.

Does this issue only happen during video playback or any graphics in general? I thought Tegra 2 is supposed to be very good! :|
I do notice some lag even when using the homescreen in 10.1, din test 7+ enough to tell, after I have tested 10.1 and 8.9, the 7+ seems just too small! And I am worrying about the future support (ICS) for 7+ as it seems the odd tab with that resolution. As with Samsung products, the ones that gets updated are those that are popular, and looking at how thing goes, seems like 10.1/8.9 is (going to be) more popular.
10.1 with the HW accelerated homescreen roms works fairly well unless you want to watch video. Honestly I only want a tablet that can play the stuff on my computer while I lay in bed and the B&N Nook Tablet almost managed it but the 7+ got it down 100%. Holding my 10.1 after using the 7+ was fun though. So huge in comparison.

I feel the exact same way about my (ex) NT. But the locked bootloader killed it for me, and I'm back to the search for the optimal tablet for me. How would you say the 7+'s screen compares to the NT? I really loved that I could sit outside and see everything perfectly on that screen. Would you say it's worth the extra cash and not waiting for the 7.7 (assuming the 7.7 isn't actually $700, as speculated)?

I just returned my NT and picked up the 7+. No regrets at all! I was betting on the 7.7 not being out for a while and being too expensive. so I went ahead and took the plunge. If the 7.7 comes out soon and is reasonably priced, I'll throw the 7+ on eBay, and eat the difference.

Not to be annoying and reiterate my question, but how does the screen compare? More specifically, how does it look outdoors? I really want to buy a replacement tablet, but great visibility in all lighting conditions is a huge factor. Reviews that I've read so far haven't really addressed this, with even some mildly negative comments about the 7+ screen.
It's a gloss screen so I doubt it would be perfect outdoors but it's not horrible in my limited experience. It's a bit darker than the screen in the 8.9 or 10.1 but it doesn't have viewing angle problems it's still a Samsung screen. Just naturally a tad darker at default.
I used to own the 1st Galaxy TAB P1000; it has no problem handling *.MKV files even with size more than 2 GB. Likewise for the 8.9. But for RMVB files it is a challenge. I tried the same files on a IPAD2. It faces the same problem . There are jerkiness . Try to get the files from www.33md.com

Maybe your app is better, or maybe your videos are lower resolution. My 10.1 (with a handful of apps I tried) barfed on 1080p pretty hard.
I've been reading on some new and not so new reviews from sites like gsmarena, phonearena, androidcentral, android authority engadget etc. And all the reviews have been glowing except for the verge well because it's theverge lol. Do u guys agree with most of the reviews?
I agree about the display, to an extent. The black are great on Netflix and the movie Gravity (Galaxy Gift), but when you watch streaming services from Cable provider, (Comcast Xfinity), the blacks have extreme Pixelation and ghosting. It gets so bad that it's annoying and ruins the whole viewing experience.
isnt that comcast's fault though?

ah i see well lets hope that gets tackled too in newer reviews but i remember josh from android authority watched breaking bad on it and he seemed to not have any issues.
by the way, how do you like the color scheme? gsmarena says its kinda gaudy but in android central forums they say the bronze is nice
I just streamed the latest Star Trek movie on Netflix and it was absolutely gorgeous. Same thing with Avengers. Remember you need to give the player about 30 seconds to buffer before judging the picture quality. Once the full HD buffers it looks amazing. HD YouTube content is also glorious.

The Verge can write an entire review talking about how perfect and amazing something is then end up docking it two stars because it ISN'T APPLE. CNET is same way. According to these guys you would think the single most important feature of a tablet is what the back of the damned thing is made of.
I love the tab but hate the gold/gray....better than white...but why the tacky gold?????
As I said in my previous post. Youtube and Netflix have been optimized for this device. So the picture is going to be amazing. It's other streaming and video services that may suffer. Such as my Xfinity Go App, Crackle . All the blacks gets extreme Pixelation and ghosting. It's horrible

At first I thought the same about the gold but now I don't even notice it. I have a white 10.5 with titanium book cover and honestly it looks pretty good.
Remember this tablet is made by Asians and Asians love gold. I think they did it to get away from the "cheap materials" moniker. Also to make it look different than the Pro line.

The reviews that "count" are the ones from real users at retail sites like BestBuy. Right now the Tab S 10.5 is getting 4.9 out of 5 stars with about 40 or so reviews in. If you know BestBuy, scoring anywhere close to a perfect 5.0 is rare.
Most of these guys that do reviews for tech sites have an altar to iPad in their bedroom at home. And yeah, TheVerge hates everything, lol. I've seen them give a review with nothing but superlatives thoughout then in their conclusion call the device "disappointing" and give it 7.5 stars. They enjoy being snobs.

Nope, it's Samsung GPU not processing the HD video properly. It's not only comcast but there are other websites that's showing this on the tab s too. My iPad displays all the same video just fine. I hope it's just software and Samsung will have a fix in it's next update because I'm a tv show buff and this is not acceptable for such a beautiful amoled tablet.
Yeah and the verge knock a star off Samsung tabs for being "too pricey" when there the same price as the iPad which has less specs but they never mention the price on them. Isheel

So far on YouTube, Netflix and Hulu my 10.5 GPU has performed flawlessly. That leads me to believe this problem is only a software patch away as the GPU is well up to the task with many popular streaming sites.
Quote from the Men's Journal review above:
Compared with the iPad mini with Retina display, the Tab S - even with a higher resolution - never felt sluggish. We put it to the test by reading the entire book Unbroken using the Google Play app. The result? No raging headache. Even movies looked better: The Liam Neeson thriller Non-Stop had more vibrant colors than an iPad mini, which we watched*side-by-side with the Samsung during the same action scene. Once the movie started, the display became brighter and more saturated, maintaining its clear picture*both indoors*and out. You can thank the tablet's Super AMOLED display and its adaptive features, which streamline the switch*between a movie and a book without having to manually adjust the way the screen looks (brightness, colors, saturation)*every time.

Although I do not doubt the honesty of those experiencing lag, stutter and generally poor performance, I think the feedback from the marketplace is telling us this may be isolated and by my guess, the result of a bad batch of parts. The percentage of those experiencing problems in this forum while still a minority is probably disproportionately large as those having problems come to forums such as these seeking help while those who are satisfied do not.
so I've used the xfinity app and watched some stuff and honestly my black levels look fine, just like Netflix does...

I use PlayOn (not free) for AIV and the rest (Hulu, HBOGO, TBS, Netflix, etc.). It uses the stock video player which works in multi view and pop-up-play. So far, across the Notes, Pros, and S', the stock browser is the most responsive. I don't want to screw around with multiple browsers and Flash just to watch AIV. YMMV.

Speaking of the stock browser. Any idea how we get it to sink with our Chrome Bookmarks? It used to do that but seems like it no longer does. How do I import my bookmarks?
I like Dolphin for one reason. Like the swipe bookmark sidebar that no one else has. Maxthon is also outstanding for easy bookmark navigation.

If you want a fast good looking browser that syncs bookmarks nicely over the cloud try Maxthon HD for Tablets. Very nice. One feature I really like is the ability to instantly go back to the prior page without reloading it from the web. It also does prefetch well. Pages seem to load very quickly.

Sadly I'm returning mine today. I was so caught up in media consumption with the screen I neglected the web browsing experience which is less than subpar imo. Other web browsers aren't any better either so so long my love, I enjoyed the pleasure while it lasted :crying:

If the N10.1-14 on 4.3 was faster than the TF-701 on 4.4 there's something amiss. AnandTech's Sunspider scores for the 8.4/10.5 were 1,082/1,015. That's pretty poor considering they and the N10.1-14 share h/w. Hopefully updates will improve things. As for Chrome, for whatever reason, it's a slug on all Samsung's high-end tablets and has been widely discussed on all their forums.

Sadly I'm returning mine today. I was so caught up in media consumption with the screen I neglected the web browsing experience which is less than subpar imo. Did you try Maxthon HD Tablet browser? It is amazingly fast and full featured. Regardless for me Chrome ran perfectly albeit I don't care for how it handles bookmarks so I switched to Maxthon. Nevertheless, lag was never a problem and Web pages always looked great and loaded fast.
When I hear these reports of terrible responsiveness in something as basic as Web browsing I have to wonder if you have a defective unit or some sort of software causing a resource conflict. Are you still using Touchwiz? Did you try another launcher such as Nova or GO? There is simply no way a tablet with this level of hardware should struggle at Web browsing at all.
Everyone saw this nice addition yet? Was really nice specially the Rosie and the New Zeeland sports 360 videos.
However after playing 5 videos in a row I got a message that my gear vr needs to cool down for optimal performance. Is this a Exynos issue in the im360VR app? Or does it happen to SD as well?
Note:
When experiencing this one make sure you discovered the possibility to turn through your gear vr-touchpad.
Makes it a lot easier and less turning head while watching the Rosie vid to watch who is talking or jumping off that aeroplane facing backwards trying to turn your head 180 degrees.
This functionality is only available in im360VR and not in Oculus 360 videos to me, is there a way to turn your "start position" there other than reorienting? Would be nice... maybe with some game pad?

These videos are terribly out of focus and barely watchable.
I don't think they are that bad, some of them are not well put together 360 because you can see the edges where the pictures are merged, if that's what you mean with out of focus.
But still nice addition with new experiences.
Not too many decent "real world/person" 360 experiences expect for cirque de soleil and evolution of verse is also really well done though it's also has animation.
All the other animated and games are better in many ways with less obvious pixeling effect. But it's a nice idea visiting real places through the vr 360. And this does that.
And as said nice functionality with choosing which direction to face using the gear vr touchpad.

I'm surprised you're comparing Felix&Paul / VRSE content with this. This is just spherical video, while the other is 3D spherical video, which is infinitely more complex to achieve.
There is a ton of spherical video available (there's a whole topic of links here), but the immersion is completely inferior to actual, properly stitched 3D spherical.
PS: Which part of Evolution of Verse do you reckon is not animation?
Yes that is true didn't mean to compare them as in that they are equal in any way, just the type of content I was thinking of, closer to real world experiences than say temple run. And it doesn't apply to Ev.o.v. now that I think about it. I guess all of it is animation but the start shows a view as if it was real and done nicely, it's not a gaming environment or cartoon environment if you know what I mean, more real. But the rest with pattern & colors in the sky and the train and ending it is really pure animation and not even meant to look real.
There is a ton out there yes but when it is added in Oculus store it is usually some kind of quality check and better than the average video you'll find which I find this was also.

Unfortunately that quality check guy fell into a coma when they released half of the Milk VR content heh.
You really should check airpano, quite a bit of their stuff is superb, if not for the 2d bit. Then also Fassbender stuff, the new beach one is quite a relaxing experience.
Then also rest of Felix & Paul stuff (you only mentioned Zarkana), and if you're the experimental type, hack yourself some JauntVR videos (all of them are live-action spherical 3D, just not as good as F&P at stitching).
Thanks for great tips will check.
Anyone know if the overheat is more common/happens faster on exynos since to me it happened in this regular 360 videos as well as in games like herobound after a while. Hopefully it is better in Android L.

Sure, VRSE video takes the cake on mine. I started a habit of taking the back out - makes it a little bit cooler and also easier to remove the battery one it hangs like a depressed banana. Guess we should start installing fans.
PS: If you quote someone they get an notification so that they know someone has responded to them.
Im running mine in power saving mode and never get overheating message. It doesnt affect performance of watching 360 videos untill they are in 4k resolution. With power saving enabled and 4k 360 video being played there are frames skipped while moving head around.
On the other note. Is there a way do move videos downloaded in Im360vr to memory card and still play them while using them with im360vr app? Maybe easier way is to reencode them to mp4 format readable by "regular" 360 videos app? Seems like im360vr videos are over 1 gigabyte in size.

Ok gonna try power saving, you enable CPU performance limit then, and nothing else?
Frames skipped is not optimal but until overheating is solved it'll do if it's only on 4k vids.
Yeah most of them are around or just over 1GB. Gonna try and see if it works moving them, could be that they need mod for it to work.
I'm also interested in vice versa, moving 360 to the im360VR folder to enable touchpad function but doubt it will work without mod/reencoding
Will check back when tried.

Try this experiment. Place a normal video in the 360 folder and watch it. You will see that you can actually pan as in a 360 video but the image is quite out of focus and zoomed in despite being completely clear viewed in Oculus Cinema. Now place a normal 360 video in your My Videos folder. Perfectly clear although odd looking.
Perhaps the focus problems in 360 videos is due to zooming?
Anyone else having issues of downloading these videos? I look at the download button and tap the headset and I get nothing!

Same here.
The only thing that works for me is the streaming from the office. (The lights are on today)
Did anyone experience changes in the content of im360VR ?
3-4 days ago there has been a huge variety of different scenes, maybe about 10-15 different videos to download and now there is only a few.
I am not sure whether i screwed up my content library, due to deleting some of the content with the note 4 standard filemanager app and not inside the im360's app.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the im360VR app didn't help.
Looks like immersive media changed the content...

I just read a post in the Oculus forum by Domen Lo saying to make sure you are using wi-fi.
I turned my wi-fi on and now I am able to download.
