[Q] Going back to stock without using factory image? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the past couple of months I've been stuck on a dead ROM (Pure Shamu), and I decided I wanted to upgrade to 5.1.1 to get the performance and battery improvements. I want to go back to stock (or at least as stock as you can get) because I want to use Xposed and GravityBox as the source of my custom features as opposed to hardbaked features like in a custom ROM. However, every tutorial about going back to stock involves using the factory images to wipe everything on the phone, including the internal SD card, to begin anew. I'd really prefer not to do that, as backing up everything on my internal SD card and restoring it via a slow USB 2.0 connection seems like a ridiculous hassle. Is there some easier way to go back to stock?

Flash a stock rooted ROM.

As above, flash a rooted stock zip.. FYI, you can extract system and boot.img from factory image and fastboot flash them. That won't wipe. It's not the best option here but worth knowing.

[Q] don't have stock backup

I have been reading for days and days. i am a noobie and i hope i don't try anybodies patience. I have not been able to find a basic enough answer to my possible delima. I rooted my captivate installed titanium backup and rom manager. I then flashed cwm and was successful. so I down loaded cognition to my computer and put it on my sd card. I turned off my phone took out my sim card and external sd card. i turned the phone back on in recovery mode and I wiped all, then got into cwm and installed cognition. It is great, but i am worried about when it degrades over time and i get the itch again to flash my rom that i made a grave mistake. i am pretty sure that i don't have a stock backup to go to before my next flash and if i download one from the internet then it won't be rooted and i will have to go through the whole process all over. i do have a backup of cog v3.04 on my sd. I wil want to flash another rom pretty soon but don't quite know how to proceed but am tempted to just do the same process i did to put cog on,(put the zip file on my sd and manually boot into recovery get into cwm and install new rom zip. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.
It is easy, and you never have to root again.
You have a file on your sd
update.zip
As long as you have this on your sd you can get into clockwork. When on stock just get into recovery and reinstall packages twice
To get back to stock you need to use odin. depending on your build number determines which odin is best. Build number can be located under the battery, something like 1008
Flashing stock is not as needed as some say. I have flashed several roms without going back to stock.

thanks for fast reply
wow that was fast, i should have posted days ago,all of that reading was running my head around in circles. Just one more question. If i use odin don't i lose root. I also have read many warnings about flashing custom roms without returning to stock, but logically that makes me think i would have to root the stock rom every time before flashing the new rom. Maybe thats a dumb question but i am just trying to be careful and delay my first softbrick experience. thanks again.
Saving the update.zip gives you clockwork recovery without root. You can flash another rom straight from there.
With the new kernels that are out flashing stock is not needed as the built in recovers understand ext 4. I flash stock occasionally for no real reason. If I am making a major change like going from js3 base to armani base I tend to flash stock, if for no other reason piece of mind

[Q] Any point going back to stock?

I've had my Bell I9000m for almost two years now. I've loaded lots of roms (at least 8) and right now running hacksung v17.
My phone seems to be working just fine, but;
After all this time would it be worthwhile to flash back to stock rom and then mod again? I am just thinking all those older roms I flashed must of left junk behind on the phone.
Will I have to root my phone again?
I have never done this before, I have read lots of threads and have the stock KG3 rom ready to go.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure that you would have to re root but I don't know if it would completly format the phone.
If every thing is running fine there is no reason to return to stock,it is the stock firmwares that contain the "junk", as long as you clear caches, data every once in a while when flashing a new update or new rom then you will be fine , and yes if you go back to stock you will have to re root it before starting again.
Ok, let me put it this way.
Is there anyway I can completely wipe out the phone (all the folders.. etc) without going back to stock and then flash Hacksung 7 again?
thanks
Format SD card?

Has nothing to do with the internal memory. So really is pointless.
You would just have to wipe cache , data and dalvic then reflash rom and gapps( nadroid backup first tho.)

HyperDrive Tweaks

Does anyone know if there is a way to install HyperDrive Tweaks 2.0 on an SGH-i537 running 4.2.2 and MF3? How about just the Device Menu(shutdown menu)? I really like HyperDrive and run 10.2 from slot 1, but since I can't run it as my stock ROM, I was looking for ways to customize my stock ROM.

I know we've been talking a bit in the other thread, but is there a reason you want to customize your stock ROM with tweaks rather than just using Hyperdrive in slot 1? Ideally here's what I would do if I ever had to start over:
Flash phone to stock MF3 at local Best Buy
Before setting up my phone again, copy the entire phone and post a zip for the community
Do not set up stock ROM, simply root and install SafeStrap
Max out the memory settings on slot 1 and only use slot 1.
The benefit to doing this is I would have an almost completely untouched stock ROM that I could always use to receive official updates while still running a custom ROM as my default.

Well, so far, my experience has been that the stock ROM is the most stable. Since I have seen HyperDrive and GPE and have even added some things from Sony Zperia, I see things I like in all of those. If I can tweak my stock and have all the parts from other ROM's that I like, why wouldn't I? There is no local Best Buy here, but I rarely take my equipment to a business for service, too many kids who don't really know what they are doing, I guess. Also, I thought I read somewhere that unlocking my phone was what would prohibit me from installing updates? But since you mention that subject, couldn't I clean the slots, un-root, remove safestrap and do a factory rest and have my original ROM? I know last week I was trying to flash a widget and I did a factory reset, wiped cache and it seemed to be stock to me. I know I had to re-setup my accounts and re-download my apps. I was able to download the last AT&T update, just couldn't install, but I still had root and safestrap. So, from what I read, I could probably install the update if I wanted to and took care of root.
So, I guess to answer your question, I get a kick out of making changes in general, whether if be with my stock ROM or an added one. I'm not a developer, but I do wish I knew more about the OS so I could help with the bootloader issue.
One thing for sure, I definitely appreciate the help I get from the folks here. Pretty fun stuff.

[Q] Quick question about safestrap and ROM slots

If I understand safestrap correctly, at this time we can't use ROM slots other than stock. So when I flash a ROM, I have to use the stock slot, and I'm overwriting the original AT&T ROM. OK. So I should keep a copy of the original stock AT&T ROM on my SD card and flash that back to the stock ROM slot if I want to go back to regular old AT&T ROM.
If I want to flash something like Cerberus so that it's part of the system and isn't removable if someone steals my phone and wipes it, then I can simply go into safestrap and flash it, even over the unchanged AT&T ROM.
I should also ask, I have been using Xposed (wanam and others). Can I reinstalled Xposed now that I have installed safestrap?
I tried installing visix using a rom slot anyways. It worked fine for a day and then started acting very buggy. Had to go back to stock. I will hold off until we are told can use the rom slots. I much prefer that option vs completely removing stock.

you can go ahead and install xPosed however it has been reported that some modules can behave badly so just a tip to watch out for. I'm not 100% familiar with cerberus but i would think the drawback is if the thief knows how to use odin they can completely revert the device so all in all security software is great but if its stolen still best to call the carrier and have it blacklisted just my two cents.

[Q] Stuck with older custom rom

So, around April-ish last year I rooted my At&t galaxy note 3 and installed safestrap, then alliance rom. I wanted to find a ROM I liked, then just sort of stick with that so I didn't have to monitor development updates about my phone and all that. The only problem with the ROM was that it had a memory leak so bad that I had to reboot about 3 times a day or else the memory would get all used up and the phone would freeze. For some reason, I didn't think it would bother me that much- the phone boots quickly and I was so fed up by then I didn't want to try anything else. I figured that if I ever did want to go back to stock (and I do now), that I had my stock ROM backed up to one of the extra slots that safestrap gives you. Well, I looked- turns out I don't. I checked my external hard drive and found a backup folder with "TWRP" in it, and in it a folder called stock -1970 -04- 02. I placed that folder in the corresponding TWRP folder on my phone's extsdcard, but safestrap doesn't see it in the restore screen. Does it have to be a zip? I totally forgot all this stuff; I haven't messed with my phone in half a year.
If that doesn't work, I'd really be cool with wiping everything and flashing a stock ROM build. I don't know where to find one though, and it should be mentioned that my Alliance ROM build has "MJ5" in it somewhere, if that means anything.
I've rambled a bit, but hopefully someone can point me to my best options.
Thanks!
Use Odin to flash the file with "home" in it from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2838117
It will load the latest stock firmware. You can re-root with towelroot.com
The "home" file doesn't wipe anything so your apps will be intact. If you want a full wipe and install use the other 4 files in that thread.
Thanks
Worked like a charm, thanks!
