Go unlimited. Google is using new compression algorithm, ss that gets better they will up the megapixels beyond 16. Right now they know at 16 they can offer everyone free unlimited storage but in another 2-5 years they will be taking 20 - 25 megapixels no problem.
It's going to change everything. They were saying it will shrink a full length 4K movie down to 1GB. It's like 10 times better than any other compression out there. It's also what makes 4K video on YouTube and Netflix possible.

Using compression to high quality photos deteriorates the quality right?

Depends on how good the compression is. Right now they are not losing any quality on a 16mp picture

I want to see proof!

Heh. This conversation reminds me of the current season of Silicon Valley.

does anyone now how to share your camera uploads a la dropbox?

Just go unlimited. There is no degradation in quality because 16 MP is the limit before being compressed and the note 4 is 16 MP. Also, make sure to take your videos in 1080p so they're part of the free storage. (I don't know why anyone WOULDN'T be using 1080p60fps )

Unfortunately this is false. 16mp is the resolution limit, any photos with a larger resolution will be resized.
Photo quality on the other hand, is degraded. ALL photos uploaded using the unlimited option are re-compressed with Google's jpg compression engine. Proof? I manually upload a 16mp image from my note 4, clocking in at 11.7MB. Once uploaded, I view the image in the browser and download it to my desktop. I have renamed the images to test1.jpg and test2.jpg. The original (test1.jpg) is of course 11.7MB. The image downloaded from Google photos (test2.jpg) is only 4.75MB. Google's self touted image compression quality is also a bunch of crap. Using the original image, I exported a copy from photoshop, and the closest file size to Google's image was setting the quality all the way down to 60.... and guess what? Adobe's compression is noticeably better than Google's. Google's compression loses some of the fine 'grain', and really smudges reds.
That being said, the vast majority of users will never ever see a difference. This is the key. The compression is good enough to where normal users should have no concerns about it.
For any photographers out there though, Google's unlimited option is unacceptable as an archive or backup solution.

Is there any possibility to improve the camera on OB?

all the pictures are blurry and the videos taken with the camera stops eventually for half a second (I guess this is because of the stock sdcard).
Is there any possibility to improve the camera performance to get clean pictures?
Thank you in advance,
Haitzo
I've no problem with my camera (good picture) or for video recording (except strange ration for 720p).
I think it's maybe your LG black who has defect ?
I agree with guyTam
I mean with not good light conditions, all the pictures are blurry. I have read the same problem on other users. The video issue is probably because of the stock sd card.

That's with all phone cameras. They only work in perfect conditions. Sensor is too small for quality photo taking. Maybe with some Carl Zeiss, yes, you will get some nice looking photos.
Does that happen when you take landscape photos or with closer objects too?
I had similar problems with video recording but since started to use NOVA ROM, I don't any more. I have stock SD card.
No problems taking photos to landscapes, just in interiors and night pictures. I am using Pays rom, do you recommend me using nova? I am reading the thread and I thinks is still a little bit buggy?
Thank you
They both work better than stock. Tried both, I like Nova ROM more because of longer (by a lot) battery life. I don't play games so I don't know if they perform different speed wise. There is some bug with SD card but that's all.
If there will be some update for camera app, it will be from LG in next update (I hope). I don't think that anyone else can make any tweaks for stock app. Maybe some other app with filters like unsharp mask in Photoshop could do the trick.

that's what i've noticed also... whenever i take videos and play them on the phone's video player, it looks fine, but when i transfer it to my laptop it looks kinda weird.
btw, the 5mp camera takes very nice stills. best one i had so far.
yeah because the lens sensor is too small; ƒ, shutter speed, can't be compared to real camera & the preview is only 4 inches resized to 800x480 obviously it looks good on phone, for excellent result you may not move/shake at all while taking a shot (if it possible, use a tripod). if the outdoor light is not enough... it can't be helped. ISO adjustment just makes your result even worse. here the example for outdoor shot from my phone:

You are perfectly right
the aspect ratio of the videos recorded needs to be fixed, im surprised that LG hasn't fixed this after so long.
would be epic if devs managed to fix this before LG does

I agree this one....the video format should be mp4.
I dont know what I did, But i just installed the stock rom after removing Nova. And surprisingly, the camera is taking awesome clicks. No speed lags for shutter/review. Aspect ratios seem fine for videos. And the video quality is amazingly improved.
Did someone just mention that Nova has better battery life ? What about pays ? hows the battery life on that ?

4.4.2 Camera quality poll

Ok guy's I wanted to start a poll regarding the camera quality since 4.4.2.
I love my nexus 5 but I found the camera when it was stock 4.4 was impressive even in low light with the flash, However because so many people were complaining about the speed of it taking shots (it didn't bother me as long as it took nice photo's) Now google have responded with 4.4.2 and speeded the camera shot process however the image quality has reduced by some margin even in well lit area's,
So basically this is a poll to gauge who wants to take better quality photo's or faster photo's
Personally I couldn't care less how long it took as long they were good quality photo's...
Makes me glad I got the phone about the same time 4.4.2 came out
Requesting new poll option: Use a different camera app and be able to do both. No need to be limited by the automatic settings.

I for one am not updating to 4.4.1, or 4.4.2. I have no complaints with the release software. Who gives a **** about how good the stock photos are. If you care even marginally about image quality then you should know how to properly edit a photo. Simple as that. I love this phone.
Day shots are as good as before, night shots are worse, more noise and it's just not impressive anymore. I'd take the slower shutter for night shots anytime, and keep the new behavior for daylight shots.

At least for me, low light camera shots look extremely better in HDR+ with the 4.4.2 update over the 4.4 release, but I can't tell a difference on day shots

That's exactly my point, I was extremely happy with stock 4.4, Camera was fine and video's were great so I'm gauging who prefers quality over speed of shots.
Question ? When your in the market for a compact camera what is end users primary concern ? How good the images are ? Or how fast it take shots ? Exactly point proved and judging from the results of the poll so far looks like I'm not alone either.

Agreed, they boosted the ISO because they increase the shutter speed in low light thus images turns up pretty noisy. What's the point of having OIS when it can't use it? It's better to have slower shutter and low ISO to make the image sharper and less noise in dark environment, just make the OIS more aggressive, come on Google don't fail me now
I came from the HTC One and iPhone 5s. I dumped both for the N5 that I purchased used that was already updated to 4.4.2.
The noise level is way too high. Day or night. Focus issues are still present. What's worst is that I can never get a clean, clear shot. I don't even want to transfer the images taken from the N5 to the computer because I know it will be a lot worse than what I see on my phone.
I purchased Camera Awesome. Didn't do anything to help with the issue. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to a better app to use? Or a mod for a previous version?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I prefer faster shots. With 4.4 I almost went nuts... especially in dark areas it was almost impossible to focus. So for me I accept the 5% worse quality and get 100% faster shots.
Very impressed with day shots, have yet to try a night shot, but I did notice the screen was much darker.

Pictures is good, but in update i lost so good video quality, now camcorder is so dark, cant see the thing when there dark environment. And i dont know why
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Whatever they did to the camera they need to revert it. All photos shouldn't look like they were taken with an ISO of 800.
EDIT: It's worse than I thought. A relatively bright photo = ISO 1336.
I prefer the quicker photo's. I don't need a camera to take pictures of my dinner or a flower. Anyone who has kids is definitley enjoying the update.
If you look through the picture thread here the majority of the pics are people's food. I don't really need to keep a picture journal of what I eat. lol

[Q] Any way to improve poor camera results?

The Xperia T is an amazing phone. Coming from an HTC Sensation, it seems like an improvement in almost all aspects:
1. The svelte matte design is definitely an improvement with excellent weight distribution.
2. Faster Processor
3. More RAM and more Internal Space
4. NFC
5. Official support till 4.3
Having said all that, the camera is a bit of a disappointment. For me, I find the current pictures overexposed and no saturation in colors, with lots of noise. (The noise is unbelievable) The algorithm compresses the pictures a little too much. I expected better from a 13 megapixel camera and that too from Sony.
In my Sensation with its 8MP camera, I am using an AOSP 4.2 release, whose camera apk allows me to select picture quality and I set it to Super. The resulting pictures are larger in size (4.0 MB - 5.69MB) but a joy to see with wonderful exposure balance and no noise in morning shots. I tried the same with Xperia T, but even when selecting Super or using Stock Rom, the camera is still not working up to par. I have tested the Xperia T camera on stock, OmniRom and CM Roms
I was just wondering, is this hardware limitation or the software/kernel is to blame?
Hope to hear from all on this. Thank you.

Try the Cyber Shot camera mod for XT and XV by (I think) Rizal Lovins.. It has all software values maxed, for optimum quality.
Should be somewhere in the Xperia T Themes and Mods section.

I can also recommend Camera MX, as it does not only provide a very potent image editor featuring HDR and probably everything else you desire, but also lets you scale your desired image encoding quality completely freely from 0 to 100 (which is basically what every camera mod does).
Also, this camera app makes our phones able to even create 16:9 images at 13MP, unlike the stock 4:3 format at this resolution.

But all these are just tricks, that have very little in common with quality improvement. You can't produce a 13MP 16:9 photo when the phone sensor is 13MP at 4:3. It's only an interpolation, I can aswell make a software that will create 1000MP image from our phones, but the image quality will be questionable at least
As for the question, you can alyways try different settings/scenes. Also you might have faulty unit with bad camera, post the photos you believe are poor and we might be able to help.
Also, Sony last years have been pretty bad at camera quality. I say it's hardware, camera in Xperia T is not bad, but it ain't awesome either. Just have a look at this comparison from GSMArena, both pics scaled to 8MP, you can clearly see that HTC Sensation is superior.

Nexus 6 display has issues with gradients (banding?) ?

I've noticed that thumbs on the gallery of pictures that have strong gradients look awful, but once you open them up it looks decent, but that's not the case on the music players like google music, shuttle, the album art looks horrendous on the app and on the widget, any workaround for this? I havent come across issues with videos only on the gallery and the music players, how does this screen look for you? (It's a screen cap so of course you wont be able to see it, but I dont have a camera with me )
Thank you for taking the time to test this
I used to do a lot of picture and video compression in the past and have seen this issue before. Without getting all technical it has to do with how the image was compressed and the high level of resolution this phone has.
I would bet money if you could get the original PNG or PSD file and converted it yourself using 100% quality for the jpeg you would not see it.
Exchanging these images back and forth and recompressing them is not helping either[emoji23]

I am seeing banding in the original Bjork image on my BenQ 24" display due to what I suspect is a lot of compression at that resolution. It's easily evident in the background when viewing the whole image and the feathery items are more obvious when magnifying.
The exact same banding (i.e., not worse) seems evident on my Nexus 6, either using Google Photos or Perfect Viewer app.
EDIT: I downloaded and viewed the 8K JPEG version of "Tropical Beach" at this HDR page, and again the effects of dithering, etc. looked the same in full screen and when magnifying between my PC display and the Nexus 6 screen.
- ooofest
This used to be a big thing in Android way back in the day... but it wasn't the screen/display, it was the APP causing it. You could open a picture in the Browser, then open it in the Gallery, and there would be branding in the picture in the gallery, but not in the browser.
It's not resolution causing it, it's jpeg compression.

Compared to my Oneplus 3 the camera is superb!
But that doesn't surprise anyone...
Try the Google pixel camera APK off XDA. The camera is far better than IPhone. Nokia's own camera app needs work

Compared to Galaxy S7 ,the camera is poor at the Nokia 8.
Really bad quality pic indoors, slow autofocus makes it impossible to take any pics of moving objects.
Asked customer service @ Nokia if there is an update coming for the camera , but they can't/won't answer.
The camera app is also poor compared to earlier Nokias , and current Samsungs.
I'd beg to differ f2dog. Mine took cracking pictures. Using the pixel APK just raised the camera to another level.
Unfortunately mine went back as it kept rebooting and apps crashing.
Just waiting to see what Google brings out tmoz and at that point possibly reorder another Nokia 8.
I was very happy with the results the cameras gave. But as I'd posted earlier, the Nokia camera app needs work.

Could you please use the Pixel camera and post 2 shots (1 of S7 and 1 of Nokia8) same object if possible, just to compare them.
In Finland Note 8 costs 1029eur, smaller iPhone 8 costs 829eur, Nokia 8 costs 579eur. I suppose extra 250-450 eur gives you also better camera?
I feel that Nokia 8 focus and shooting is pretty fast in defaults (got flash disabled), took attached picture with single shot. When it gets darker images seem to get bit softer, not too bad though. Pretty easy point-and-shoot camera.
issues with Selfie with flash mode
i am having issues on my Nokia 8 using the selfie with flash mode. The whole screen goes white when taking a selfie with flash on. Has anyone experienced that?

The screens the flash as there isn't a front facing flash
The camera is brill, the app is crap.
That video looks bias though.

The image sensor isn't the best. Mid tier, only so much Nokia can do with the software. However, they should provide more manual control.

the final image comes out fine. Its the time to focus that needs to improve.

It is not Nokia though, it is HMD and i doubt they have the resources Nokia had, just be patient.

It isn't the worst either.
This is the same Christmas tree taken at the same time with an iPhone 6 and the Nokia 8
Actually my old lg g4 takes better pictures than the nokia 8 it is because the sensor and aperture lens limitations but if you are not taking care about pictures it is a good phone
