Hello, I recently purchased a gpe nexus 6 for my cell carrier Thumb cellular. Small company that uses verizon towers in rural America (LRA) one of the bigger LRA carriers is bluegrass cellular if it would help any. Basically these LRA carriers partner with verizon to give coverage in rural areas otherwise skipped over. The phones themselves are almost exact clones over their verizon counterparts for what that may matter.
My issue is I have a bug where I can not send out sms messages on lte but when preferred network is set to CDMA only Prl it works. Set back to lte CDMA and they fail to send again. Everything else including receiving sms works. Any idea on what I can do because I don't want to send this device back. Seen its common on CDMA carriers but no real fix has been found besides to stay off lte. Any help would be great, Thank you
Sounds to me like it might be something with the APN's. Maybe you could look at another (android) phone that works properly, and see the apn's, and then manually enter them in the nexus?

I have a galaxy s5 on the same network and saved the apns and restored on the nexus using apn backup restore, I get lte and can send mms. The issue is sending regular sms while on lte. If I force 3g or even 1x I have no issues sending a text. Seen its common issue with this phone on a CDMA network but no idea what to do to fix, updated to stock 5.1 as soon as I received the phone, tried chroma as well as bliss pop and all have the same issues. Really don't want to return the phone but doesn't seem like there is a fix

Why did you do apn backup/restore rather than letting the n6 pull apn info from your sim? That may be why you're experiencing issues?
Although, standard sms doesn't have any specific apn settings afaik, and should just work as long as standard voice works...
Btw, what build are you running?

Did that before I restored apns actually. Had an issue so that's when I used my thumb cellular apns which are different then the verizon ones it gives me thinking it would help me for some odd reason even though apns have nothing to do with sms.
If I go to dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* I have LTE/GSM/CDMA AUTO (PRL) everything works except sending an sms. Only thing that won't work. If I change it to CDMA only I will get either 1x or 3g but my phone works how it should. Should have absolutely nothing to do with apn settings. Seen this issue is common on verizon but more so on sprint but not everyone is plagued with this problem, but exchanges and new sim cards don't fix the issue for those whom experience it.
I'll post a log cat, I don't know what to look for so if someone could it would be great. I'm testing with 8sms
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xwj5q7wut05ybhl/Log_2015-05-30_22-12-22.txt?dl=0
I'm looking for answers too I have a similar carrier (another partnered with Verizon in the lra agreement) and interested in buying a n6 provided this issue can be resolved. Being a carrier that functions the same way I'm 99% sure I'd also have this same problem.
What doesn't make sense is that when network mode is set to LTE/CDMA AUTO prl, you cannot send sms but you can receive them, send/receive mms, make and receive phone calls etc. But if you do cdma only and limit it to 3g, it all works.
Does anyone have any suggestions in things to try?

Try this: go to *#*#4636#*#* and do turn on SMS over ims or if it's on turn it off and see if that changes anything...

I tried that before and had no luck. Going to try different modems tomorrow and a couple BP edits. Running out of ideas to try sadly. Only idea I have is how the phone is communicating with the network, same issue I saw on the nexus back in November with the sprint network. Seems like a radio update fixed the problem.

My new xperia z3 compact (D5803) receives text messages and calls very intermittently. I'm on AT&T US, stock firmware.
- If I am using the phone (or have very recently used the phone, say within 30 seconds) then most calls and text messages come through fine (though not always).
- If I leave the phone alone for more than a few minutes, text messages or calls almost never come through - though occasionally I get a text message many hours after it was sent.
- If someone leaves a voicemail (because I didn't answer the phone, because the phone didn't ring!), I don't get a notification until I open the voicemail app and manually sync.
- I can make a phone call or send a text message with no problems (texts arrive immediately).
I don't have any of these problems when I put my SIM back into my HTC One M8.
I've tried the following to fix this:
- I went to the AT&T store and had them give me a new nano SIM. It made no difference; same issues.
- I factory reset my phone. It made no difference; same issues.
- I updated to the US version of the firmware. It made no difference; same issues.
- I put the SIM into a second, until that point unused, xperia z3. It made no difference; same issues.
Given that I have exactly the same issues after changing both the SIM and the phone, I can only think it must be some kind of compatibility issue with using AT&T on this phone - except I see that many other users of this forum are on AT&T and aren't having the same problems.
I do notice that I don't have the best signal in my house (usually 1-2 bars) so I'm wondering if maybe that could be related? As I say though, my HTC One works fine, as do all of the other AT&T phones in my house.
I think my next step will be to go and buy a T-Mobile prepaid SIM, just to see if that works, but does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? All in all this is getting pretty frustrating, because I LOVE the phone, but right now it's unusable for me.
I would suggest reading this thread below. It should give you some tips on how to resolve your issue.

Thank you for trying to help!
I probably should have added that link as one of the things I had already tried. To be specific, my APN settings are:
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC http: //mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
---------------------------------
I'm beginning to think it *must* be a signal issue, even though all the other phones in my house are fine. I have the "Advanced Signal Status" app installed, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for to see if there's anything fishy
Don't forget to download the Internet and MMS settings for your phone. You go into Settings > Wireless & Networks > More > Internet settings and download settings for Internet and MMS
Thanks again for the suggestions.
Sadly, it's still not working. I'm pretty sure I had already downloaded those settings, but I did it again anyway (seems you can just download over and over). I even reset the phone after that just to be sure, but the problem persists.
I have the same issue and I live in Sweden....
Im having the same issues. I restart the device and then come all the missed calls and missed txt messages.. i really hope theres a easy fix to this soon.
So, I switched my SIM from AT&T to T-Mobile and it fixed my issues. It seems that the either the poor AT&T reception in my house or some other strange incompatibility between the phone and AT&T was the problem.
Either way there's obviously some kind of issue with this phone - my guess is that when connectivity with the network is poor, the phone maybe times-out and gives up. Perhaps Sony will fix this with a firmware update at some point. In the mean time I would suggest that other folks having this issue maybe go to a part of town where they know reception is very good and see if the problems happen there.
So after 2 days of of testing, a new nano sim card and several phone calls to ATT I found temporary fix. Change your Network mode to WCDMA (preffered)/GSM. While this wont give you LTE it will prevent the missed phone calls and txt messages and at least you have HSPA+ . The problem is the LTE connection to ATT. The connection either drops and or prevents phone calls /texts from coming through the lower HSPA + or 2g bands... Not sure why this is. Hoping that when the Sony Store models start shipping on Nov 2nd they have the same issue and Sony will send out an update to fix the connection issue.
I'm on the US ATT network with the same problem as well. After trouble shooting I have come to agree with you. I'm really hoping Sony sends out an update.
Is this a problem on Tmobile USA with Z3 Compact also?
same issues!
I have two Z3 compacts (US version purchased direct from Sony) on my family plan with the same issues of not receiving SMS or calls when connected to wi-fi, and occasionally cannot receive SMS or calls when not connected to wi-fi either. I am always able to send texts and calls, and MMS/LTE always work (I am usually e-mailed when my phone isn't working and I get that right away). Whenever the phones aren't receiving calls, it rings once and goes to voicemail, which tips us off that the phones aren't working.
If you are also getting this problem, please get on AT&T chat and ask them to escalate/forward to their manager. We've got to get their attention. Additionally, I was told that "Okay so since the phone is unlocked our service is not guaranteed to work at full capacity, also I can not submit a case due to it is not an at&t phone. "
Yep - Same problem over here. AT&T in Northeast USA.
AT&T tried everything they could (resettings connection, etc) but again also said that it isn't guaranteed to work because it's an unlocked device.
I'm doing a system repair on the phone from the sony desktop application. Hoping it will fix, but not hopeful. Now sony says they want to have my phone in for testing. :/
I'm hoping they realize soon that this is a bug, and not a case of a broken phone.
Same problem here on cricket (AT&T) in Houston. Just disabled LTE. We'll see if that fixes it like it did for the other guy. Sony needs to get on this.

Not working MMS
Yep I have tried all of the above solutions and nothing is working. Changed APN multiple times, factory reset, switched SIM, called att, went into the store.
Like above, ATT came to the conclusion that unlocked phones are sometimes not compatible with their service and there's only so much trouble shooting they can do.
I have ATT in san francisco, and it's looking like I'm going to return the Xperia z3c. Shame it's a great phone besides the MMS issue.

Confirmed that this worked on my wife's z3c. She wont miss the LTE anyway since she is always near wifi and when she isn't 3G is definitely good enough. We streamed spotify for an hour today on country roads on her phone on 3G. No issues.

sorry to hear you guys are having such issues...
My z3 compact on att works flawlessly. I swapped my nano sim from a iphone 6 i was trying out straight into this.
Att did mention something about some settings they had to flip in the back end when i switched over to a nano sim from the sim i was using in my lg g3. If you guys loose all hope have a buddy with an iphone on att and use his imei and let att configure the sim for that phone then swap the sim into the z3...could work because i know it does for me
Same issues here. I have a new D5803 on Straight Talk (AT&T). I live in the mid Atlantic. It seems I don't receive calls/texts when I have 2 bars or less. Not sure about LTE vs. HSPA. I always have Wifi on so not sure if turning it off would make a difference. THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE! Hopefully a firmware update will save us. Has anyone contacted Sony?

Thanks for the info, but this isn't a viable solution! I shouldn't have to keep Wifi off to ensure I receive my calls/texts!
Hey guys,
I bought a Nexus 6 two months ago while I was on T-Mobile. I got fed up with T-Mobile service (constantly dropping calls, not receiving all text messages, etc) and decided to switch to Verizon. I took my phone to Verizon last night, they scanned it and gave me a nano SIM. I was surprised how easy it was, given the headaches others have seemed to endure trying to get a Verizon SIM. Everything seemed to work on Verizon's end, according to the person who helped me.
The problem is, I can't get LTE to work with voice/text. If I go to Settings -> More -> Cellular Networks -> Preferred Network Type, I have 3 options to choose from: Global, LTE/CDMA, LTE/GSM/UMTS. If I select LTE/GSM/UMTS, I get LTE data, but I can't send/receive calls or texts. If I select Global or LTE/CDMA, I can send/receive calls and texts but I only get 3g data. If I go to Phone Info (*#*#4636#*#*) and set network type to LTE Only, the same thing happens...LTE data only, but no calls/texts.
This is about the limit of my ability to troubleshoot problems. What am I missing?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Did you properly configure the APN settings for Verizon? Your problem may be with that. Do a Google search for Verizon APN settings for Nexus 6...your answer may lie there.
most people have to factory reset their phones when going from another carrier to verizon, to get lte to work properly.

There were about 50 APNs when I checked. I deleted all of them and created a new one based on the following:
Name: Verizon
APN: vzwinternet
MMSC: mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms (with http, but won't let me post when typed out)
MMS port: 80
APN type: default,supl,mms
Everything else was left default. Restarted my phone. I am still only getting 3g on Global and LTE/CDMA, still can't make calls with LTE/GSM/UMTS.

I did a factory data reset this morning.
There are at least 5 - and as much as 10 - APN setting setups for Verizon. You may have to try them all. I put a Verizon Sim in my N6 and they all showed up in the list of APNs. When you deleted them you may have deleted the one most compatible with the N6. You may have to reset, put back in the Verizon Sim, and hope they all repopulate the APN section. If not, you'll have to search for them all and try each setup.
I can reset the default APNs and they will all show up again...without having to factory reset.
Do I need to reset the phone without the Verizon SIM inserted? I left the SIM inside when I reset this morning. I only ask because you mentioned resetting the phone and then re-inserting the Verizon SIM.
Thanks for your help.
I generally remove Sims and SD cards (not applicable here) when doing a reset as my line of precaution. Since you are able to restore the default APNs, do so, and try each one till you get the proper one.
Tmobile has their own software version/radio pushed out to Nexus 6's. You can try loading the Verizon software version/radio and see if it works.
Try this one: http://www.randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-6/shamu/vzw/

I found the problem. When the Verizon rep installed the sim, she immediately dialed *228. After googling LTE problems, I've found out that *228 on a LTE phone is a very bad thing. I got a new SIM and everything is now working.
Thanks again!

This may fix jfltespr on the Sprint network always worked fine with LTE on most ROMs, but not with very many ROMs lately.
It seems that the APN had one slight difference between ROMs that worked with LTE for me (older CM, stock TW, GPE), and ROMs that had no LTE or eventually dropped LTE (CM12.1 based). The bearer was not set to LTE in the APN profile for the ROMs that do not work for me. Changing that quickly fixed the problem (figuring it out took me much longer). I looked around a bunch when I had this issue, and found people with the same issue, but no solutions. So, that's why I post this here now. Here's the How To if needed:
Go to Settings, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names, and Sprint LTE internet.
Scroll down to Bearer and see what it is set to. Mine was Unspecified, and that's what was causing the issue. Set Bearer to LTE
Go back to APNs, and also set Bearer to LTE on Sprint EHRPD internet. I know that's not the normally selected APN, but if you only change Sprint LTE Internet, it seems to automatically change to this EHRPD one, and it still doesn't work.
That's it for now. Enjoy your LTE again on 5.1.1. It seems to be much smoother.
I'm on an LG G3 but this APN/LTE issue seems to be affecting a lot of people on Android 5.1.x. I've been searching for solutions for days. Unfortunately, I have to report that your method did not work for me. With the Bearers changed to LTE I'm not getting any connection at all, but with them Unspecified I'll get a connection for a small time (<1min) after switching preferred network from 3G back to LTE before it drops again and gives me the exclamation point. If I leave it on 3G I have no problems retaining a 3G data connection. Nexus owners appear to be having this issue en masse with their 5.1.0 & 5.1.1 updates from google so it doesn't appear to be a CM issue, though CM had some APN related commits on July 1 that also seemed to cause problems for people and were undone by devs of some CM-based roms.
Yea that's a bummer. Thanks for sharing though. Maybe having it happen to so many people means that it will get fixed sooner than later, but I can only hope. I can only speak for the Sprint version of the S4 running on the Sprint network. It seems that people with this exact phone are okay on other networks.
This fix wasn't 100% for me either. Every once in-a-while, I think mostly in particular locations, it'll get stuck on the exclamation mark, and I'll just have to throw it into airplane mode for a moment.
If you haven't tried yet, make sure to put the bearers to LTE for all APNs that have the same DNS name as the normal one that you use, and the others at their defaults. It's probably not the case, but your results sound similar to mine when I only set one of the APN bearers to LTE. I thought that might be worth a mention, but I'm sure there are deeper problems. Sounds like you probably already did that anyway...
I've been having problems with this too and I tried your method but it didn't help me. It's really frustrating when there's so many great roms that are useless but thanks for trying though. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.
AOSP automatically selects the correct APN as long as the bearer is unspecified. You can hard code the bearer, but then that APN is only valid for that bearer. In other words, setting the eHRPD bearer to LTE will make that APN only valid for situations where the radio is connected to LTE. However, the connection will fail because the APN settings are wrong and the system will automatically move to the next APN with the bearer set to LTE. This time the connection will succeed because the next APN is the LTE APN. If you set the eHRPD bearer to LTE then you will never get a 3g connection.
What exactly are the symptoms you guys are seeing with LTE? My wife and I are both running CM with no connection problems whatsoever.

For me, I just randomly lose data connection, both 3G and LTE. It will then reconnect a few minutes later. I tried removing the other APN like the freedompop & ting leaving only sprint APNs thinking that might help but it I still lose data.

Take a modem log right after you lose data and send it to me in a PM.

Hi. I am running CM12.1 and have tried other Lollipop roms. I am using Ting as my provider. I have two issues.
1. I don't get voicemail notifications. I can live with that.
2. Picture messages don't show. Texts come and go with no problem, just not picture (mms) texts.
Would these fixes help my issue? I have had no issues with 3g, which is most of my coverage area. I am usually on wifi anyway.
Thank you!

Cm12.1 ignores the voicemail notification from the carrier. The MMS issue is an incorrect/missing APN. If you can figure out what it should be we can get a patch submitted.

Here is a jfltespr build that fixes Ting data/MMS. I strongly recommend a clean install. If that's not possible, be sure to reset APNs to defaults after you flash and then reboot. It will take a minute or two to get data after the reboot. Please let me know how it goes. If this does fix it, I will submit the patch. If not, I still have some ideas.
Be sure to make a nandroid backup as I couldn't get my wife's S4 to test it with and this was the first time I have built for the S4 on this machine.

I loaded it on and everything works except for mms. My 3g is good, wifi, texts, internet, calls ... just no pictures in texts. Something I noticed was different from the other CM12 versions is that now I can see that the text was sent, I just can't download it. I tried these settings from this page - I used the EHRPD settings. They were able to make mms work using the Octo rom.

MMS still doesn't work...no problem. I'll look at this link, make some more changes, and get back to you. A log might be helpful if you can.

I'm running cm12.1 nightlies with Freedompop as my carrier. This fixed my problem immediately.

What fixed your problem? Setting the 3g bearer to LTE? That means the freedompop LTE APN is wrong and should be patched in the code. If we could get more input on this we could fix it for good.
I don't even have anything listed in my APN (I used to). How do I fix that?

Tap airplane mode, then tap again to turn airplane mode off. Then go into your APN menu. Your APN's should appear.
I'm running the latest CM 12.1 nightly. The stock APN's work for me, but I rarely get a LTE connection with them.
I've flashed the APN fix that's floating around, and it worked in older builds of CM 12, but recently the fix just disconnects and leaves me with no signal.
If I do what OP suggests, I'll get an LTE connection, but that leaves me with no 3G where LTE isn't strong.
I guess the problem with CM is that it cannot successfully switch between LTE and 3G correctly.
If you're not all that concerned about getting an LTE connection, I'd recommend just sticking with the stock APN's. Once you start flashing fixes, you're gonna have a problem.
I decided to give Project Fi a try after the word came down about Verizon raising the rates for unlimited data plans. Long story short, it's not for me. The coverage stinks in the areas I travel. Battery life took a big hit due to it having trouble finding and keeping a signal. I thought it would be better having looked at the TMo coverage maps. Anyway, that's a different topic.
I hadn't canceled my Verizon account so I put that SIM back in and it seems like I am connected to Verizon's network again. All the texts sent to that number came through once the phone was turned on with the VZW SIM back in. However, I can't make any calls. I get an operator error about being unable to complete the call. The Cellular Network Settings only has a roaming setting. Don't have the Enhanced VoLTE option and the other things I had prior to switching to Fi. Did the *#*#4636#*#* thing to try turning the radio off and on, turning on the VoLTE provisioning flag, rebooted, etc. No change in my ability to make calls. Anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get voice calls working again? If it matters, I am on 5.1.1 LMY48T.

The solution is to go into the calls section of the dialer and disable the call assistant settings.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ProjectFi/...ing_between_verizon_and_project_fi_sim_cards/
OK, so I can make calls again by changing the setting above. But I am without simultaneous voice and data. Still missing most settings under Cellular Network. Any ideas on how to get that back? Is there anything I need to toggle in the *#*#4636#*#* menu?
I'm having the same problem. But the issue is my phone is operating In Ireland, I've never lived in the u.s but I don't have call assistant in my dialer settings...I have data and texts and can receive calls but can't dial out, I obviously don't have access to projectfi here in Ireland and it is installed on my phone but its disabled and always has been, really strange I flashed the ROM for marshmallow automatically suggested by NRT for my device, but I'm wondering if the rom I flashed was u.s. specific even though it didn't suggest that in the rom I flashed...it has me absolutely baffled.

This came up alot when the N6 was first released last year. You will need to factory wipe the phone, and then you will have full access to the Verizon network. There is an issue with putting in a Verizon SIM after using another carrier's SIM.. Not sure but it might have affected Sprint also. The posts are out there on XDA about this, if you dont trust me. You can search and find them.

Sorry for the late reply. Life got in the way of me checking back on this thread sooner.
I believe you about the factory reset fixing it. Was just hoping there was an easier way so I don't have to setup my phone again. Perhaps the Marshmallow OTA will fix it but who knows when we'll get that. I'm tired of dealing with the signal issues I have as a result of switching back and forth so I'm going to do the reset. Just to confirm, this is the option under Settings > Backup & reset, right? Or is it something I need to boot into recovery to do?
So on Monday ATT decided to deactivate my sim card because they believe my phone is incompatible with their network now. All my bars went to 0 with an x on it and I couldn't do anything on the phone. I went to an ATT store, got them to give me a new activated sim and I put it in my phone and all my bars came back.
My phone says VoLTE again too by the signal bar area. I also tested a text and it went through fine. I received a phone call and while it works fine, it sounds like junk now. Like it is no longer actually using VoLTE like it always has. My phone doesnt seem to have any data however, when it should have LTE just fine. I also cannot make any calls, even though it says VoLTE on the phone, it just re-routes to ATT customer service instead of going through with the call.
When I go into the network area in settings it says no IP address either. I looked and my APN is set to nxtgenphone, Preferred Network Type selected on LTE. Before ATT deactivated my sim card LTE has always worked fine, and LTE should still work fine. It is only the 3G network being shut down. Also given the fact I have the VoLTE icon the phone is apparently connecting somewhat to an LTE network.
So does anyone know how to fix settings to get data working again? Is it just an APN that needs to change? What is everyone else doing with the network shutdown and has anyone else had issues like this?
I had the exact same issue, your issue is in fact APN settings I'm having them as well. Try deleting your current APN and putting in a new one. Once I got a new sim my APN reset I could call but no data and no text. I have half of the APN information in place and have data and basic text, but once I input the MMS port the APN data disappears still trying to figure that out. Not sure if anything I typed is helpful but at least you know your not alone with a mi11 on ATT and it can work

Thanks for the reply. I tried deleting the MMS port and also the proxy just now and data didnt come back. I will try searching around for more APN info for how phones are supposed to connect now and see if I can find anything.
It looks like from what I could find that it is due to an IMEI whitelist ATT has, blocking data connection on any device not in their whitelist. The solution seems to be to root the phone and change your IMEI to a whitelisted model.
While my phone is rooted my IMEI is not cloned I definitely would not share my IMEI with ATT. When I got my sim card yesterday I had the attendant activate but I did not provide my phone so he did not get the IMEI from my phone. If you got a sim and they input your IMEI that could be a problem possibly. Just a suggestion to try and get a sim activated at a store without your phone.
I had also heard that most ATT MVNOs were not having the device whitelist forced on them yet, so I went and tried 2 different ones yesterday. Both failed to get the phone working on their network with their sims.
Before I went through the hassle of rooting (and most likely losing payments) I tried ATT again anyway. I used their online customer service chat and the first person I chatted with said he could help me with the lte data problem and the IMEI issue. I was skeptical, but he actually did fix it all up. He just needed my sim ICCID and my phones IMEI1 and he submitted the info to their backend people for adding to their system. It took almost an hour and a half for it to get added, but overall it was a pretty painless process and I was browing the web most of the time while waiting in chat. I now have LTE data again, VoLTE again, and "5G" too (which ATT 5G is really just one or two more features than normal LTE and is no faster in speed and uses LTE data bands). I attached a screenshot showing the data and VoLTE working on my phone. The first signal is ATT, the second is TMobile (which has always worked and never had an issue, their 3G network shutdown is going on for another 4-5 months)

Happy you are back up and running and I'm glad that you found someone at ATT to do the fairly easy work of getting your IMEI cleared. Lots of people have been worried about devices not working on ATT because of this whitelist issue glad to see there are workarounds just wish ATT didn't make it so convoluted.
