[Q] How do I root my phone? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Z3 compact a couple of weeks ago and this is the first time I will be attempting to root my phone. I've got the D5833 model will Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. I haven't found any threads about rooting this device on lollipop yet, so how do I root it?

You didn't look very far, or hard.
Here is one way, quite long and involved but reliable.
Here also works, shorter and less complicated, but there are some caveats.
Read both threads closely and decide which one you want to try.
Any questions should be addressed to the appropriate thread.
Good luck!
Peace.

ATT N1 Best MOD

Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Android™.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.

Hi XDA Community.
Just recently bought a (Verizon) Moto X DE and am excited to join the XDA forums. This will be my first Android device (coming from iOS) and look forward to diving into rooting etc.. I've been reading and learning a lot on this forum and others since I received the phone a couple of days ago. I plan on spending a decent amount of time tinkering with my new toy and hopefully can add my experiences to the community for other newcomers like myself going forward.
A few of things I'll be starting off with based on the research I've already done:
1. Unlocking the bootloader on my Moto X DE
2. Rooting on 4.4 KitKat
3. Enabling native tethering
4. Installing Xposed and Gravity Box
5. ????
6. Profit
Let me know if you guys have any general tips or noobie advice. I don't have a ton of free time these days, but I look forward to exploring the forums further and adding any useful input where I can.
Respect.
Well one of the thing's you have to do , to post to development-related forums, is have 10 or more post's.

Welcome! I think you will love this phone. I don't know if your list was intended to be in order, but I suggest installing the Moto Tether module in Xposed to very easily get native tethering. It is far simpler than the other methods floating around out there. Only other advice I can give you (and it looks like you are already well on your way toward doing this) is to read a lot before you ask questions. 9 times out of 10 your question has already been answered somewhere, and the old-timers around here don't like answering the same questions over and over. Enjoy your X!

its not that we dont like answering the same questions over and over it is just we have taken the time to make these threads with all the answer and get them stickyed and no one reads them before posting lol. one of the reason why i havent created the general questions and answers yet. wait for all this 4.4.2 stuff to get over with and see what error we get before i throw it up.
Welcome! I think you'll enjoy yourself here. And the steps you've already done should be enough for a great and interesting experience. You can also try different launchers, like nova, aviate or themer, to customize your experience even more.
Thanks all for the welcomes. Personally, I think the search-and-read-before-posting guidelines apply to most all forums and not just XDA.
Anywho, I appreciate the feed back/advice re: the tethering module on Xposed. Will definitely check that out. Also it's prolly worth mentioning that I primarily use a Mac as my main machine. I'll be happy to post any simple advice I can as I go along. I can easily boot up into Windows if I feel that its too much of a hassle on Mac.
I'm not much for welcoming, but you made a great decision by going developer edition. I would seriously research using fastboot. There are a lot of other tools here, and they all work well enough, but people left and right are bricking their phones using ez mode toolkits cause they don't know how they work and what they are really doing. Hell I'll admit I don't know how they work because they are unnecessary. I've had 3 different 4.4.2 builds from 3 different countries and never came close to bricking. Last night I finally went T-Mobile 4.4.2 I was fully stock, upgraded and rerooted and flashed recovery in 20 mins while playing video games online. Seriously, learn to use fastboot you'll thank me later.
MotoX Developer Edition went from German 4.4.2 to Great Britain 4.4.2 to T-Mobile 4.4.2 no problem. Fastboot FTW!

I'm glad that I always use fastboot. This is probably the best advice you will ever get. Don't rely on tool kits.
Yeah, I manually rooted using fastboot very easily. However I was slowed down a bit trying to use mfastboot at first, which didn't work. Anyone know the difference between these?
Successfully unlocked bootloader, rooted, installed Xposed/all the modules I felt like I needed including MotoX tether and a couple of other neat ones I came across. Currently trying to find a way to access Google Now commands offline, ie: set alarms/reminders without data connection. Thinking that this method should work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571466 but I'm trying to figure out if I can accomplish the same thing with a free Tasker-like app.
It seems like Tasker is an absolute buy must for serious Android users. I'm thinking that I'll eventually have to just shell out the $3 for it...

mfastboot doesn't have the file size limitations that fastboot has. Where did you get your copy of mfastboot from? It is a Motorola utility so it will work fine if you get it from Motorola when you request the factory images.

[Q] Can my phone get root?

I've been trying to figure out on the forums which device has which path to get root and wow it doesn't make sense to me. I'm no noobie but I don't get all the updates and processes.
I just want root so i can use Xposed. i don't care about loading different roms or kernels.
I bought it from swappa. It has android version 4.4, system 140.44.5.ghost_att.en.US, Build 13.11.1Q2.X-69-3
this thing sucks HARD without root. there is so much you could do that you can't. It astounds me how diligently manufacturers and carriers are about preventing you from using the phone to its fullest. So i void a warranty, i don't care...

I have an AT&T Moto X running Kit Kat 4.4 (from OTA) and I'm also not clear on whether I can root my phone. I'm also unclear about whether I can unlock my phone
I would also appreciate guidance and direction.
Many thanks!
The AT&T branded Moto X cannot be unlocked, but the GSM unlocked DE will work on AT&T and is unlockable. The TMobile Moto Maker Moto X will work on AT&T and has an unlockable bootloader, too, but if you unlock the bootloader on it, your warranty is void. So I would stick with the GSM unlocked DE. There may be some issues with 4G LTE on AT&T using the TMobile devices but I am not sure. That is probably covered in the forum somewhere if there are any issues.

Okay, so I can root, but not unlock. I think I'll wait till an easier and simpler root method is developed like there was for my Samsung GS2.
I appreciate the guidance.

We are lucky to even have this method. Google is making Android more and more secure by incorporating SELinux. If a root method for 4.4.2 is ever found, it will likely be even more complicated.
4.4 Security Enhancements
Also, the dev who came up with the current root method, jcase, is not interested in finding a root method for Motorola phones running 4.4.2.
So rooting now is likely your only chance at rooting. If you take the 4.4.2 OTA unrooted, it is doubtful you will ever be able to gain root because the 4.4.2 bootloader is not downgreadable.
Since the developer edition phones are so readily available from Motorola at such a good price and since only AT&T and Verizon retail/customized phones are not unlockable, there isn't much interest in trying to find a way to root locked Motorola phones running 4.4.2. Sprint, US Cellular and TMobile retail/customized Moto X's are unlockable as are the developer edition Moto X's.

Thanks for the thoughtful and informed reply, Cartland. My last phone was a Samsung GS2 and it was easy to root (all automated). Though I have rooted and flashed ROMs on a number of phones, this process seems complicated and readily screw-upable (not a real word, I admit). I like being rooted, so I can flash tweaked-out ROMs that are better than stock.
I'll explore rooting more and see how comfortable I am with it.
Much appreciated.

It takes some time to do it. I did it on a relative's phone. There are unfortunately some pointers that are left out of the original posts that help everything to go smoothly if you know them. You can find them in the threads, but the threads have gotten so long it makes the process take longer when you have to read through them to find all of the pointers.
If you are only flashing using RSD Lite - RSD Lite will stop you from bricking your phone.
You are never going to get a simpler method with a locked bootloader Motorola phone - it is only going to get harder and I predict the devs won't invest much energy in it going forward because it is just not worth it when there are developer editions available to us. I think those that are doing it get a kick out of it, but when it becomes too time consuming, well, they have their day jobs they have to make sure they focus enough time on to pay their bills. They get donations for this sort of thing, but I am sure the donations don't compensate them very well for all of the time they take trying to find exploits the more secure Android becomes.
With a locked bootloader, you can't flash ROMs because you don't have a custom recovery. But what you can do it use Xposed Framework and its modules like Gravity Box if you are rooted.
I spent some time this weekend rooting a relative's Verizon Moto X with a locked bootloader due to the 4.4.2 OTA coming. You have some breathing room on AT&T right now to root, but don't wait too long or you will lose the opportunity once the OTA comes.

I don't think I have the time or energy to go through the process of finding those pointers and then going through the root method. I'm wondering if anyone will compile those pointers (as you suggest, I have noticed with previous rooting and flashing methods, some key steps aren't described which can cause major problems).
A clarification. You say that if I just want to flash ROMs, I can use RSD Lite. But then you say that with a locked bootloader, you can't flash ROMs.
I do appreciate your taking the time.
POINTER - sell or trade your phone for a Dev edition
It is difficult to root if you can't unlock your bootloader. There is a thread in this forum telling you how to root your device with both locked and unlocked bootloader.
Rooting this device isn't difficult. If you can read and type verbatim, letter for letter, you can get root. People need to stop psyching themselves and others out.

EDIT: does anyone know if http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/orig-development/script-root-moto-x-root-script-locked-t2603051 will work?
I'm getting close to knowing what to do!
But the individual steps are not very well written.
For example on the RockMyMoto page, he just starts giving you commands. He doesn't tell you what to type them into. In the video, everything is already open. I tried the command in cydia impactor and it didn't do anything. I though maybe you do it in adb, I don't really know what that is but I found adb.exe and launched it but the command window it opens goes through a bunch of commands and then closes. I can't even get past step one because he never said how he got to the point where he starts!
CartlandSmith said, in the third post, that i am supposed to reflash 4.2.2 at the end.. Did he mean 4.4? Or 4.2.2 then slapmymoto then take 4.4 over the air?
It would be really helpful (to me at least) if someone could put step by step instructions. Like humiliatingly degradingly redundant instructions for a complete idiot. I will put them up if I ever figure it all out. It's so frustrating when the instructions are so detailed from where they start, but they never show you how they got to where they are.
Thanks to everyone for the help.
EDIT: probably stupid question but does the phone ever need to be connected by USB? none of the posts mention it but all other devices i've used needed it. adb (here is a tutorial)/ isn't recognizing my device with USB connection or not. Both connected to same router, all drivers and everything updated, Debugging enabled...
No offense intended...at all....but if you value your phone, you really need to study up and read LOTS of stuff here. Until you understand what you are about to do, don't do anything.
Just trying to save you from a bricked phone. You seem very unsure of everything at this point. No one can post anything here that isn't already covered in the guides. Look at the stickies, complete Moto x guide is there.
Good luck.

I agree that everything is covered on this site, it's just not organized.
It seems unorganized when you don't understand. Read enough of it and it all makes sense eventually. This has everything about bootloaders, rooting...etc. BUT, you need to know what applies to your situation. And again...that comes when you understand the stuff.

The OP of the thread I linked is well organized. Its about the only one that is. Its also stickied, so should be incredibly easy to find.
As far as misinformation goes, that's due to people being quick to post advice when they clearly don't have a handle on this stuff themselves.
How to avoid the clutter and misinformation? Maybe point people to good threads that already exist instead of filling new ones with more misinformation. No? Or God forbid, suggest they search for the information that already exists? Instead of helping to grow yet another repeated thread with both good and poor information within it.
Xda's number one rule was created for a reason. To keep clutter and thread after thread of similar content to a minimum. A lot of inaccurate information gets repeated over and over as well. But, so many refuse to search cause its too much work, and just as many others condone this behavior by answering.
I know most don't agree with what I'm saying, as the forums prove with the repeated information here in truck loads. And I also know when any of us remind people of rule number one here on xda....we're called trolls, flamers and much worse....even when the reminder was posted respectfully.
So who exactly are the flamers? LOL
Its looking like reminding members to search and read and actually help them help themselves is becoming a dangerous practice. I'm tired of the misinformation and cluttered forums....and if reminding is just going to start drama at every turn, I suppose reporting the offenders is the easier option. Tho not my first choice.
But if you read this carefully, you'll see I'm completely agreeing with you. LOL. So lets agree to agree and leave it at that.
And as a member who's been around a while, I won't stop doing my part to try to cut down the misinformation and lack of respect for the xda rules. Not abiding by rule number one is EXACTLY why the mess of confusing information exists. You see that, right?
If the newer members want to make me the bad guy for this, fine. I'll be the bad guy.
And I help more people here than most as well.....but that's forgotten if you disagree with anyone or remind anyone of the rules here. Fine. Again.....call me the bad guy. Better get used to it too, I'm not going anywhere.
I'd apologize for the off topic, but this thread should have been closed anyway.
Have a good one!

[Q] i537/i9295 Differences

I have been an Active (i537) owner since the first day it came out. Along with others, I remember begging XDA for our own forum--separate from the regular S4 forum. Now, I am wondering if, perhaps, we should have been more specific. It seems like the differences between the i537 and the i9295 are great enough that we should have asked for two new forums instead of one. I don't follow the S4 thread, so maybe, these small differences exist in that forum also, but sometimes, it seems a little tedious to have our own forum and still have to carefully check for the model number that pertains to my phone. I don't intend this purely as a complaint, but am I the only one that thinks that the two should have been separated?
BTW, I do realize that it is very late in the game to reasonably ask for two separate forums. It would be a major pain to even attempt to make a split now. I am really just asking how similar are these two phones? Maybe, I am missing something.

I have been an Active (i537) owner since the first day it came out. Along with others, I remember begging XDA for our own forum--separate from the regular S4 forum. The only difference between the i537 and the i9295 is that the i537 has a locked bootloader, other than that they are the exact same phone. The only problem I see with having separate forums is what happens if/when they figure out a way to unlock the bootloader? Then you have identical phones in two different forums. I agree it takes a minute to figure out which phone people are talking about, but generally it's pretty easy to figure out.

LG G2 Lollipop Update/port

So since no one seems to be ranting or asking the question about this, then I guess I will. And here's why. I read earlier this past week that LG would be pushing the update for their G3. I figure with that news out there and the idea of tweaking it to work on the G2, that there would be at least a beta out there? I've looked everywhere and I haven't found anything. I'm not sure how hard an LG is to port versus an HTC but I know that there are ports from the One m7, One m8, and One Max that work on the DNA. Anyways, I'm not trying to *****. I'm just curious as to why there isn't anything out yet? I'm ready to test drive the new 5.0 and I don't really like the nexus devices, nor do I have the money to go buy one out right. I'm just really wondering if anyone is even working on this or waiting for it to hit and then will start working on it??
1. I don't think you're allowed to post questions in development forum, ROMs only.
2. The G3 update is not as easy to port as you think as we're missing a kernel. The problem is even more complicated with the Verizon model because we don't have a CDMA Nexus model to base it on. Porting to GSM model can use some help from the existing Nexus 5 kernel. That's what I think.
Well.. I believe that someone(s) is working on a port for the G2. I'm sure that since they're doing it for free and in their spare time, they will release one when they have a "Good, Safe to Flash" version. Since I'm not a developer of any sort and just a very grateful user of their work.. I will continue to wait patiently until they see fit to release it. If I get tired of waiting then I will probably learn how to make one myself. That way I can have it when I want it.

First and foremost, this is in the wrong section, as stated before. This is not a Q&A forums (see sticky) and at 100 posts, you should know this.
Tim from ose and reven from liquid smooth along with eight other people, two being members working on cm are building cm12 for us.
Twice now it has been leaked, resulting in two broken builds, and doing nothing more then pissing off the guys working on it. It will come when they have it stable.
What? There is no lollipop port for the dna.
Please note the sticky at the top of the Dev forum going forward...
Sticky: ★ ☆ ✰ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting do not go in the Development Section. ✰ ☆ ★
You know I get that everyone isn't trying to be rude about my posting in the wrong section but I'm sorry it came across rude. Yes I have 100 posts or more. However I didn't read the sticky at all because in my opinion of I or someone else should have a root question there isn't a real section for it that is easily noticed called Root: ask your questions here. So I'm personally going to go to the section labeled development and for my carrier and ask those questions. Maybe my brain is wired wrong in the way but to me it seems like common sense. Anyways, I'm done with my polite rant. I appreciate the responses for the information they gave me. I'll just sit back and wait I suppose. I could always play with stuff on my DNA.

Yeah, I dunno. There's a general Q&A and a Verizon specific Q&A and you're asking a question, so I don't know why it doesn't click.
The reason why you don't ask questions here, is because it would bog the entire forum down with questions versus Roms, and this place is for roms.
I get why I shouldn't have asked my question here. That part clicks just fine mostly anyways. Where it run up on the issue is that it says general questions. I'm a member on another forum and you don't ask general questions about a rooted phone in a section like that. There is a section called all things root for that type of question asking. So I hope the logic of why I asked on this part of the forum makes sense. But for the future I won't post in the wrong section anymore.
Honestly dude just be patient. Some of the Nexus devices are only just now getting the update, and it's going to be a little while longer before we see anything. CM12 is being worked on and we'll get a G3 port a little while after Lollipop hits the G3. I'm foaming at the mouth for L just as much as anyone else, but these things take time.
If you really want to try it out, there's an early CM12 build in the regular Android development forum. It runs but has some bugs on all versions. It's really nice outside of that.
How do I enable WiFi?
Haha, just ****tin' you.
