wifi/data shuts off when using music apps - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i'm listening to google play music, radio.com or siriusxm app either on wifi or cell data after about 15 min the radios turn off. When i wake the phone, it restores the radios and all is well, at least for the next 15 minutes. Is there a setting or an app that rectifies this issue? Thanks.

[Q] Need help troubleshooting wifi activity

I've had my captivate about 2 weeks. Still stock rom and not rooted.
I spend most days in my home office connected to wifi. Installed Y5 to manage wifi connections. Installed NetCounter to keep track of usage. My home router is a D-Link Dir-655 N Gigabit.
When connected to wifi, battery usage is very fast. I need to keep it on charge or it won't last past mid afternoon. Did some testing from 100% charge, with wifi off: 14 hours down to 68%; with wifi on: 3 hours down to 74% (then had to go out on appointments). All other factors equal during testing. Phone just sitting on desk, no usage, not calls, etc.
I noticed that whenever I have wifi turned on, the network activity shown on the indicator light on the router is constant, something like 20-30 blinks per second. It's not like normal network activity where the light blinks with a normal data stream, and then is off for short periods. When the phone is the only device connected to the wifi, turning wifi off on the phone stops the data stream and the light on the router goes out. Turn the wifi on the phone back on and the blinking starts again, and is constant as long as wifi is connected. This has nothing to do with activity on the phone. The light blinks on constantly even when the phone is idle.
I have tried stopping everything using both "Applications/Running Services" and "Advanced Task Killer", but nothing changes the constant data stream. Even with everything stopped, the data transfer or polling or whatever it is goes on and on.
I did have one period when the constant data stream was not happening. At the end of the day Tuesday, that's the day I left wifi off all day from 7am to 9pm and the battery only went down to 68%, when I first connected the wifi at around 9pm for a period of about 10 or 15 minutes, the data stream indicated by the light on the router was normal. I was thinking, gee this thing has fixed itself. But while I was playing around with the Daily Briefing widget, the data stream started back up again. I've deactivated the Daily Briefing widget as I don't want it anyway.
So I'm at a loss how to troubleshoot this problem. I know that the constant data stream is not normal. Others have reported good battery life with wifi on. I don't think it is my router, since I had that period where it worked normally. Anybody have any ideas what I should check next?
Thanks

Phone very hot and some bugs in the ROM CyanogenMod 7

Lately I battery is lasting far the charge all night, switch it off at 9 am, and after 3 hours and the battery was at 75% without using it, I have only synchronize Gmail. It currently (3:48 PM) and the battery is at 30% and have only used it slightly (10 minutes Internet surfing, text messaging)
Another thing I noticed is that the heated screen on top (where the CPU), just 10 minutes surfing the internet and the screen gets too hot, the battery reaches temperatures of 40 ° C - 42 ° C and even in the part where the battery is cold compared to the screen. Is this normal?
Another bug I've noticed is that sometimes the phone gets quite slow and starts to vibrate for 10 seconds and then returns to normal.
It perjuducial the phone to reach high temperatures? Sometimes I get to watch TV series online with Flashplayer and battery runs out fast and I have to leave it connected to the charger, but too hot to disconnect and return to lower temperature. Yesterday at least as I could not sleep with the phone from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. and I wonder if the intensive use of mobile phone could end up damaging the phone by high temperatures.
Anything but I could not solve is the automatic locking of the screen is running where it should not, for example: I am on Google Maps and the screen turns off, I also happens in games and when I watch some videos with Flash, in the camera also turns off the screen, I searched through all settings and I could not find a solution.
Another bug that is annoying me is with the WiFi, that when the screen is blocking WiFi stops working I have it set to never stop WiFi but blocked the screen stops working WiFi, Wifi never turned off, but the problem is that it stops sending and receiving data, it is quite annoying because sometimes I need to download files larger than 100mb and I have to configure it not to lock the screen and the battery runs out faster.

Use android market app OS Monitor to see what's going on in the background. Something is using your processor. OS Monitor should assist you in locating that process.
The only processes that are in the background is facebook (must be push notifications) Gmail, The Go Weather Widget, Google Maps (always stays in the background) and WhatsApp. The rest are system processes, if I'm going to stop using the phone close all unused applications, like Internet Explorer and other applications that need not be in the background. The phone just warms me when I use it for several minutes. The WiFi I have not been solved, as long I have to leave the screen on so you do not pause the download and the phone sometimes it gets slow for 10 seconds and return to normal

wow turning off data and WiFi really helps battery life

I've always had my data on in all my phones.. .I got fed up of the gnote's battery life so I decided to turn it off when I was not using it and God I was surprised, I watched a whole movie and played that train game and I lost only about 15 -20% of my juice.....
so today I turned off my data and WiFi before i went to sleep and when I woke up 6 hours later I had only lost 1%
that has never happened before...
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
wifi has been known to be a great battery hogger on the note, interestingly enough it should be the other way around
as for the data, the phone works extra hard in lower signal areas to boost reception, hence drinking juice
I always disable wifi and data when I'm not using them.
I use the Go Power Master widget to switch between different profiles I have set up for wifi, mobile data, wifi with autosynch and no data.
There are other widgets that do the same thing. Just saves you having to toggle each setting separately.
If I stay connected with wifi, it's not too bad, but if I move out of a wifi area, and leave it on, it seems to drain battery faster (I'm guessing because it keeps rescanning for connections?).
I have somwhere describe this
Any way you will find this solutione better.
Use phoneweaver, you can describe the time, it will stop data at defned time, as well switch on too at your describe time. So if you set data off time just after your time to sleep, N switch on time just b4 your wake up time, you even need not to bother do do it manually
same way this can be triggered by location too, you can switch on/off data/wifi at perticular place.
And there are lot action you can set.
agree to rechlum if you are connected to wi-fi is consume less battery thn you are connected to net with 3G, N keep wifi open with connected to data is draining battery too fast.
could it all mean that I wasted a lot of time trying to reduce my battery consumption with WiFi on?
so far by disabling the unnecessary apps strartups (Autorun Manager) and turning off non-essential syncs I was able to get down to ca. 7mA (Battery Monitor Widget estimates) in standby mode, BUT only when WiFi is off.
When it's on, the power consumption stays at ca. 60mA in standby mode, which is something I cannot comprehed - using CyanogenMod on my previous device I was able to stay below 15mA regardless of WiFi state.
Turning off data is pretty stupid. I don`t about you but my phone is actively working in the background.
checking email every 5mins
gmail syncing
facebook notifications
twiter syncing
Linkedin updates
ebay notification
3G data monitoring
weather updates every 30mins
Latitude monitoring
stocks updates
sports scores updates every 1min with your choice of espn, score mobile, fox sports...
bottom line is gotta use a smartphone as a smartphone. With data turned off notifications are not happening.

If I know I'm not going to be looking at my phone for a while, it's not much use wasting battery having wifi or 3G turned on.
I'm a teacher, so I often have 3-4 hour blocks of time that I won't touch my phone.
I just turn wifi or data back on when I'm ready and my updates still come through when I'm ready to view them. Any updates that might have come through if I had left data enabled, I wouldn't have seen any earlier...
If I'm watching a movie I'll often switch off data because I know I won't be looking at my phone for 2 hours.
I don't see how conserving the battery is "stupid".
One could argue that leaving data enabled when you aren't in a position to use it is "stupid"...
Just out of curiosity, is there some pre-made application that allows me to turn data and wifi off after 5-10 minutes after then screen has been turned off and then turn both back on when the screen is turned on? Or should I just code it myself?

there's an option in Settings / WiFi Settings / Menu key to turn WiFi off when screen is off,
besides that there was one to do exactly what you need, but cannot remeber it's name, if you don't find anything satisfactory then try Lama - it has quite a large range of location-based triggers
Leaving wifi on when you're not using is awful. It completely prevents the phone from going to deep sleep.
I get awesome battery life simply by leaving wifi on only when the screen is on. My battery ranges from 18 hours to 1 day and 23 hours, depending on my use (temple run )

Greenpower will do exactly that. You can set it up so it turns off wifi and 3G/data after a set amount of time after turning off the screen and turn it back on when the screen is turned on. You can have it sync once every n minutes/hours so you still get Whatsapp, emails and other stuff without having to turn on the screen.
It's working like a charm for me, before I used to lose 15 to 20% every night, now with the same usage I've only lost 30% in 67 hours.

Everybody has different needs. If you need all this and to be aware of what i going on in your no-doubt busy social life, then you can do this.
On the other hand, it is utterly useless if you are not going to pick up the phone and see what the weather is (instead of looking out the window) and who is doing what on Facebook (or writing things in Facebook instead of actually doing things) as soon as it beeps at you. In those situations, turning of data will save battery with no loss of information.
Personally I love a 'pull' digital life, rather than a 'push' one. I have far too much to be getting on with to be constantly hassled.
Of course, in actually writing this, I am proving myself completely wrong, but what the hey?
I only care about my Google+ account and my e-mails, everything else matters only when I personally decide to check it. As such I've set my phone to turn data back on every 30 minutes, sync e-mails and Google+, and then turn data back off again.
I use Timeriffic (free from Market/Play) to disable Wifi/Data etc based on time of day.
I don't really care about emails when I'm sleeping!
A must have application IMO.

Google Now and Battery Drain

It seems Google Now is draining my battery, not really bad, but it is keep my phone awake.
Now, I guess this is just part and parcel of Google Now having to constantly check your location, but has anybody else have an issue with Google Now on the One?
My battery lasted me 12hours yday with what I consider to be heavy use. Bluetooth Streaming Music for 2hrs web surfing over 3G for 2hrs whilst on the train with varying 3G signal, web surfing over wifi for 1hr (including downloading around 6 - 7mb. 15mins of calls. Around 40 whatsapp messages received and read, about 20 emails received via gmail and read, archived. Couple of minutes video, Switching Screen on just so I can see the phone I say at least four to five times and hour.
Not very scientific, sorry didn't really capture any screen shots with BetterBatteryStat, but gives you a rough idea what the usage was, all of that with Google Now on which I assume is constantly checking my position.
I would like to leave Google Now on, but if its going to make a big difference, then I have no choice but to switch it off. I continue to have location services on, but I assume that just allows apps to use it when required. Is there anything else from Google that requires constant checking of location?
Ok, usual suspects.. switched of location reporting under latitude and the partial awakes for the NetworkLocation seems to have more or less disappeared. Hopefully I get a couple more hours with the sort of use described above. If that's the case, I'm happy with that!
Note, location services under settings is still on.

How are you getting that kind of battery life?! Check out my posts in the 'battery life' thead in the 'general' section. 12h is exactly what I'm looking for but I am getting like 9h

Well, as you know it's all depends on what you run and how you use it. So I can't really answer your question. I can tell you what apps I used though, I unplugged my phone at 7:30am and used Play Movies for a few mins, playing a video, used Gallery for a few mins, check train times using National Rail Enquiries app, used Chrome for browsing on 3G, bluetooth streaming music for 1hr on my commute into work. Used Chrome for browsing and Sky News app on WiFi for say 30mins... downloaded some files over wifi and 3G. 10 - 15 pushed emails, 40 odd whatsapp messages which involved downloading some images, blinkfeed updates probably 3 -4 times, maybe more.
10 - 15mins worth of calls and lots of switch on screen and going through some settings and homescreen navigation and Play Store navigation.
Then browsing over 3G and BT music streaming for another hour on the commute back home.
BT and WiFi was on all day.
I had Google Now on, location settings on, latitude on and the phone was at 2% around 7:30pm when I plugged it back in.
Not very scientific but hopefully you can tell if you use more power hungry apps than I do.
Then recently downloaded BetterBatteryStat and GSamBatteryMonitor and realised that Maps was keep my phone aware for not excessive periods, but throughout the day, I say about 1.5hours. So I looked into exactly what that was and it turned out to be Location Settings in Latitude and potentially google now. Set both of those off and kept location settings on under the main settings, so apps can use it on request.
The phone is now spending less time awake when screen off. There is also a Facebook refresh interval setting, I don't exactly know what that is, but that was set to every 30mins. So I have changed that to every 4hrs. Notifications from Facebook are still pushed I think.
One thing I have set is Blinkfeed to auto te on wifi only and not wifi and mobile data and that was set when I got the phone.
Being a new phone I'm using this more than I would normally, so I'm more than happy with the results. To me, the above is me using it a lot, some people may say that's actually moderate use... so it's all subjective.
Battery life is one those things where you just won't get the same result for everyone, it really depends on so many factors, so you may have done so already and you probably know exactly what you're doing (I haven't read your post unfortunately, meant to be working at the mo) but all I can say, is install those two apps I've mentioned and have a look at partial wake locks and go from there.
Hope that helps.

You can turn off use WiFi and cellular to help reduce the wakelocks or disable Google now. I never use now and it was always a horrible battery drain for me.

Do you have the App Google Settings. It came with the phone and it has a green icon. Go in there and under Maps & Latitude you'll see a load of settings.
1) Switch off Location reporting, I used "Do not update your location", however, I think you can use "Set your location".
2) I've unchecked Report from this Device.
3) Enable Location Sharing was unchecked for me by default.
4) Disable location history
5) Disable Automatic Check Ins
I also have google+ off.
Now, obviously if you like to use that stuff, then you have no choice, but I don't need to keep track of where Ive been and I don't need constant reminders about things around me and how long it takes to get home on public transport (which only includes buses btw). If I did need local information, there is plenty of other apps that does that at my request.
If they refined it and made it much more configurable then it might be good, e.g. include trains and actually let me configure when the times I want it to start checking, e.g. when I finish work, an hour before start looking at weather, train times home, any delays and whats on TV.. now that would be brilliant, one it will save power as it will only check location at specific times and two it's actually useful information at that particular time.
Thats me though. Others might need Google Now as it is..
Hope that helps.

I'm no expert, but that seems OK to me.
Google Now was an even bigger drain on my S3 ...I had to disable it on that phone. I was struggling to get past 6 hours! I deactivated all the Google Now cards and the battery life returned. The One is clearly better because even with those same cards enabled, I can easily get through the day and beyond. Google Now is clever, but power hungry.

Next thing to look at is the App Sucker in GSamBattery Monitor and set it View Time Held Awake. My top three are Kernal (Android OS) 38m 1s, Google Services 13m 37s and System (*wakelock*) at 10m 9s.
You can find a lot of info in there and you can drill down even further and usually can tell what exactly is it that's draining the batt. Kernal and System, I don't know enough about, but when there's specific Apps that show high battery consumption you can tell straight away.
E.g. yday, I started up Sky Go even though I knew it wasn't working and shut it down immediately. However, it continued to run in the background and could only tell by looking at the BetterBatteryStats and GSamBattery Monitor.

Concentrate on the top 2 mate, seems like Maps and MediaServer what ever that is keep your phone awake for over 30mins. I would set a custom ref and switch screen off and check again say 10mins.
I've also discovered something else in Kernel Wakelock. Im on wifi at home and after 5 mins of screen off, it nearly has 1min of MSM_HSIC_HOST wakelock. I think this is the modem and wonder why it needs to wakeup as all data is going via wifi. Since unplugged this is at 1hr 17mins, with only roughly 1hr away from home. Does anybody know if this sounds right?
It is something else to look into

Any APP to prevent deep sleep?

Hi!
Having troubles with a 520 because once it enters the deep sleep state, it'll start getting Whatsapp notifications only when waking it up.
No battery saving setting is turned on.
An APP that wakes the device from time to time would help.
Thanks.
Perhaps you either have cellular data turned off, have no data signal, or are set to only receive notifications over WiFi? By default, WP turns off WiFi when the screen is off and the phone isn't plugged in. I think there might be an option to change that, but I don't recall where it would be.
There are definitely apps that will cause WiFi to stay on in the background (I think pretty much any streaming music app does this?), but those will wreck the battery life if you just leave them on all day. Apps are also able to periodically (~every 30 minutes) do some stuff in the background even in the phone is sleeping, but I'm not sure if this is allowed to wake up the WiFi and cause it to connect.
If the problem isn't WiFi instead of cellular data, I really don't know what's going on.
Thanks! Read here if you're still interested:
