Hi,
I am looking forward to buying a new phone (Android). For my currently owned HTC IncS, I am quite satisfied the way custom ROM have turned up. Well, that would remain one of the major criteria for my new phone as well.
Currently I have Samsung Galaxy SIII in mind but I also need advice on which phones are likely to be 'alive' in terms of development around new Android releases, etc.
Note: I searched for other similar topics but none touch on this area
I'm waiting for the butterfly. Expected launch in India is this month.....

IT depends on what you are interested, screen, nfc, lte...
IDK if samsung has already published the new lte versione of s3 with 2gb ram...
Samsung's end phone has s-amoled display, you'll have to adapt yourself because the difference in colour is huge from out phone ( in worse or better it's personal)
Personally I would like to buy the nexus 4 (best quality/price, but soo much difficult to obtain). time by time I've appreciated android aosp over sense ...
M7 should be a great choose but it's too soon to talk about it...

If you could wait for HTC M7, it's gonna be new flagship phone of HTC. But if you want to buy a phone right now, I suggest Samsung Note 2. One of my friends has that one and it is wonderful. Smooth, fast and graphically outstanding phone.
Just tried out the Nexus 4 yesterday... Holy sh*t!! What an awesome piece of joy!
M7 will probably rock also I'm not sure about Sense 5 though....
SG S IV is coming – with the new ROMs keeping us going for a bit longer on Inc S, this might also be a contender for potential upgraders.
I would consider another thing when buying a new phone: HOW u get s-off'ed or rooted...
I would prefer to root using a bug and "not" voiding warranty, rather than ask asus or htc to unlock my phone and say goodbye to warranty...
I was using Incredible S too until last month when I finally got the Nexus 4. For this price, nothing much can beat Nexus 4 at this moment. The only complain I have is I wish the screen can be bigger......
I played with the HTC Butterfly last week in Taiwan during a business trip. Wasn't very impressed......
I would think in terms of development, SGIII would be a safe choice, although I think Nexus phones are the best in terms of the amount of active and future development since they are the first to get OS updates. The only thing that stops me from getting one is the lack of a removable battery and Microsd storage, which are things I don't want to go without. If those things are important to you, I'd probably go for the SGIII. Just my 2 cents anyway
Xperia Z especially if you are up to serious customisation since Sony is being very very kind to devs now.

Nexus 4 all the way if you can manage to get it for 300$ anyhow !! Nothing really beats this phone in any aspect at this price tag !! If I have unlimited data plan + Dropbox acc then it's ok for the lack of storage. So basically no cons at all
And about the all glass design get some cover and you will be ok.
Nexus 4 = amazing display + amazing camera + amazing hardware + updates + amazing design + premium feel (not cheap plastic s**t ) and a lot of ram ... and many more
What can you hope for more in a smartphone??

The way the phones are built for example - I don't like the look of the phones or the way the buttons are set out.
The software and overlay I also don't like.
There's more than just this ^ however when I test the flagship models of Samsung, HTC, Sony and LG, I just don't get the same feel from the Sony and LG as the HTC and Samsung.
But like I said, I just haven't had good experiences with sonys. Saying this though, i haven't used the new Sony phones so they may have stepped up!

Is anyone else here as sick of Samsung and its variants as I am? I feel like this is my last Samsung as it is just too frustrating looking at all the development and none of it for my particular Chinese variant. I unlocked and flashed cyanogen onto a one plus the other day ... just seemed so much smoother and more interesting experience.
Yep.
This was my first shot at Samsung. It just seems so confused and corporate and no, not that one on this one, no, not this one on that one, and Samsung hogging all the space so I feel like they own me, kinda like Apple, and I don't know, I don't feel very looked after.
I'm heading to Huawei believe it or not. The Chinese are using good materials, are innovating within android, are more open with what you do with their phones.
I don't know. I don't feel very connected with Samsung.

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way - I wasn't sure if it was just because I am based in China that I feel this way. I currently prefer the idea of a Xiao Mi or One plus at this stage, even though I won't be ready for another phone till probably October next year. I think a big problem with some of these Chinese phones, seems to be that if you want the latest and greatest device, they never seem to have enough available or in stock till months down the track. I think Huawei sounds ok, but I also worry that I'll pick up something like a Huawei, and then it might not be suitable for me and have any Western Rom development (like my Note-bloody-4 N9108v). At least I suppose, I was able to grab the Note 4 almost immediately and avoided an impulse Apple purchase - even if I am stuck with Touch wiz and some other aspects.
You mentioned feeling a disconnect. I think I have this too - It's a strange feeling, as normally I track latest updates of possible new phones quite hotly, but the S6 is the first time I haven't felt any urge or inclination to buy or even read about a new top shelf phone. I wonder if it is this current experience with my Note 4 and the variants compared to my recent experience with my friend's one-plus.
At any rate, thanks for the responses.

I giggled.
I'd absolutely die before I apple, I can't stand the thought of having a big Mother vetting everything I do.
Actually, the Note 4 was an impulse buy. It was the day after New Years - I was hungover (never again) and I couldn't find the HTC M8 with regular camera. My partner has the S4 and I have to admit, the camera rocks. So does this one. I don't mind the Note, the build is solid, the camera is excellent and I'm enjoying the stylus. The whole Samsung thing just feels so proprietary and the Samsung experience isn't the fun Android one I am used to. There is no theming, I can't fiddle without being afraid of something, I'm always tiered against some 'other Samsung' firmware/updates/chips - is mine not good enough, not one of theirs kinda thing, so certainly not feeling special for owning the device. The Huawei P7 has limitations - but you know, you buy the top Chinese for half the price, they treat you like a God, updates everywhere, special little things they do (Huawei is Emui and themes, fabulous), and the P7 looks and feels gorgeous - I go to bed with it!
Samsung has to go somewhere to remember how to make it's users feel special... It seems like they're all about themselves, the Note is fully capable... If I'm trying to change it or something, it's my fault, I'm somehow sub-par to the experience Samsung clearly is trying to create for me.
Dunno. Wish it were more fun. The Note is a very expensive too and it would be nice to feel treated accordingly, like you do when you suck it in and buy an Audi or a Merc on impulse (again, drunk or hung-over is the only way to do it I suspect!)
Anyway, interesting. I'll take a look at the S6 but my heart is already set on the glass-and-ceramic P8.
Meanwhile, I'll keep hitting the 'software update' button on my Samsung twice a day and pretend I don't already feel like I got the wrong Note 4 variant.

The Tmobile Note 5 and S6 Edge+ both already have Video Calling.
We just got a BOH4 firmware update a couple days ago which included native video calling.
Have a great evening!
Seriously? We haven't even got the 5.1.1 update still. Keep dreaming if you think Samsung gives a crap about us Note 4 users now that they have the iPhone-esque Note 5 and are wanting all iPhone users to switch to the Note 5.
Whats worse, my girlfriends S6 Edge just updated for video calling and ALL of her icons are now "iPhone-esque" as well, with no way to change them back from what I can see. I am seriously over Samsung with their actions this year. I bought the Note 4 because I DIDN'T want an iPhone! Stop trying to copy them. Seriously. Just STOP!
And before you ask, yes, imad.

Nova Prime. Make your launcher look the way you want it.
I know about all the launchers but it's the fact that Samsung has completely lost focus of the market they have and are now only caring about the iPhone and the people that use them and it sucks when you finally find a great phone and company and they completely do a 180 and start doing all the things you hated about the competition in the first place.

She can change those icons to whatever she wants through the theme store! There's pretty much anything you can think of in there and plenty of them are free!
Aha yes my first thought as well...however this seems to be a system wide change that even changing themes will not change back. All of the icons are now "bubbled" like the iPhone. Unfortunately changing themes does not change them back :/

I'd rather use Hangouts.
hangouts is crap... google infested crap
everyone has to remember, once Samsung comes out with a new phone, they forget about the previous model, for ex. Note 5 just came out, Note 4 will probably get 1 or 2 updates then its forgotten about....
they been doing that for years, just like HTC, I had just about all the HTC models starting from there first HTC T-Mobile Dash (windows phone) all the way upto the M7... and then I stopped supporting HTC, and this will be my last Samsung phone, I had the S2, S3, NOTE 2, NOTE 3, NOTE 4, and I refused to buy the Note 5....
I bought my 2nd Note 4 less than a month ago, I have my wife my Note 4 and purchased this and Moving on passed SAMSUNG,
If I have to, I will just buy freaking flip phones if I have to, all these smartphone companies come out with a new phone and forget about updating there older models...
I REALLY HATE APPLE STUFF, but one thing I do notice is that they update there devices for the older models with there updates, which is a shame that android phones don't except one.... GOOGLE PHONES.... like NEXUS devices get the updates... well will see what happens....
just frustrated with these companies selling there phones expensive and not support them after you purchase them... they make sooooo muchhhhh money for a device that is really worth less than $200 to make.... we all fall into this hype and make all the executives way to rich....
one way is to just stop buy them....
For myself video calling has never been a must have and when needed I use Skype. At the end I rather have my sd slot than native video calling. Besides its just a matter of time before one of our talented developers add it or more to their roms. Themes and Icons will always be one more reason why Android is better than IOS, in my honest opinion of course.
Well just in case anyone noticed or not, we got video calling on the Note 4 and it works. After 5.1.1 update.

Yep, we got it with the 5.1.1 update. Meanwhile, I have no friends on Tmobile with a capable phone.

Just curious to see if anyone is making the jump now that the new nexus' have been released for pre-order. If so what was your main reason? Easy root? More development? Hardware? Software? And if not are you staying with Samsung after the lock down they put on there phones? I myself have owned several nexus phones before and they have always been great, my only issue is there is always some hardware spec I'm missing, usually the camera. Right now with this variation I feel the 5.7 inch screen is a little much for me and know ois for the camera on the nexus p and the nexus x is the right size but way to underwhelming as far as specs go.

I preordered my nexus 5x. I went from a nexus 5 to this and have regretted it ever since. My main reason is the openess..there's a huge battery problem that could be fixed without having to wait on Samsung if there wasn't a bootlock.
Yeah man after having several nexus devices I switched to the lg g3 then this and I miss the development possible with the nexus. I don't know if anyone from the att forums ever pops in on a nexus development thread but it's a virtual playground of new roms, kernels, and useful mods. Don't get me wrong I'm appreciative of anyone putting in work on the att variants, it's just nowhere near the support a nexus gets! If they would just come out with a soild camera and the premium specs the 6p has, I would've preordered also

I'm getting swayed myself. My notifications, device wake don't work unless with CM locker and then it's still not consistent. Then there are the gremlins here and there but there are some that really bothers me.
Plus I'm tired of my Nexus friends getting the new upgrades all the time.
I know how you feel, especially considering if I had a nexus right now I would have the marshmallow update already. Unfortunately I'm still stuck on 5.0.2 because I don't wanna lose root! By the time we see marshmallow it'll be on the SGS7! I sweat if tmobile gets it together with a consistent lte signal Im done done done with AT&T

Samsung makes very nice phones but i really want more flexibility. I have already ordered a Nexus 6P and i hope i am going to like it. I am only worried because it is bigger than my edge.
If its your first nexus you will love it, theres almost too much flexibility! Youll find yourself messing with everything lol. The only thing is you dont get the gimmicky stuff as much as you do with manufacturers like samsung and htc. Some people miss that. The size difference, thats another story and partially why I have held off until I can hold one and see in hand the difference. I had the LG G3 and that is about as big as I think I can comfortably go with a phone.
Last time i had a samsung was the note 2.. i hated that phone so much i traded it for a optimus g pro. loved that phone still have it today. i swore i wouldn't go back to samsung. then the s6 appeared. 64 bit cpu exynos was destroying the benchmarks. smaller more efficient cpu manufacturing, awesome screen, glass, metal. smaller more efficient battery and finally tw had less bloat.damn made me change my mind. i had to pre order....... i have hated this phone since month 3 of owning. i hate this samsung. cant wait to get rid of it. i gave my htc m8 for this crap. m8 never lagged like this pos and battery was better. and the phone seemed faster idk how or why. samsung made me hate samsung. so yeah im getting a nexus just can't decide which. waiting on the reviews. not making the same mistake of pre ordering
Yeah man I know, that's why I skipped the s5. I've owned the sgs2, Samsung galaxy nexus, Sgs3, and sgs4. I got in on the sgs4 while there was still a bootloader exploit, however once i saw they locked it down in a way where the later versions could only use safestrap I was like, no way will I ever come back to Sammy. Skipped the sgs5 and went with the LG G3 but was lured back by the specs on this phone!! Samsung always has the hardware I want in a phone, best cpu, great screen, good camera, couple cool little gimmicks to play with... but this allowing manufacturers to lock down bootloader and essentially kill the dev scene is really pissing me off. I have always bought my wife HTC phones when I upgrade because I can never decide between 2 phones, her m8 still running as smooth as day she got it, I didn't even unlock and rom it like I usually do. I just cannot find the perfect storm of cutting edge specs that I want and development to go with. Sucks!!!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using Tapatalk
The reasons I like Samsung phones is their hardware. Great camera, screens, better memory configurations, and lately the design of the phone. If all that was put into the nexus then it'd be an easy decision. Unfortunately the nexus lacks that. Idk what my next phone is going to be after this debacle.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using Tapatalk
What other devices are you considering if Samsung continues upping security and locking down their phones. (Lets says all Samsung devices snapdragon and exynos had locked bootloaders)
Working in IT in the Mobile realm I can definitely see the impact that Samsung Knox and Samsung’s focus on security is having. Samsung is pushing it very hard and this lets them maintain dominance on enterprise as far as the android side is concerned. However, to our (xda community) detriment these security features and components are lost when we root. Notwithstanding I was fine with loosing Samsung pay and Knox. It looks like with newer Samsung devices and updates Samsung is really ramping up. I have always been a fan of the Note series and switched to an S7 edge to wait for the Note 7. After the Note 7’s demise I decided to switch to the s8 Plus until the Note 8 was coming out. With recent news on new bootloaders preventing downgrades and bricking devices, Note 8’s having encrypted CSC’s disallowing modification and I’m assuming when Oreo comes out for these devices more security features and processes will leave rooters out in the cold. I was surprised to see the new “feature” Samsung added with the OEM unlock toggle being removed on users devices and them being in “Jail” for several days. I can only assume the s9 and maybe with Oreo updates on older Samsung devices they will also be getting this “Enhancement”. So, it seems to me the days of rooting and enhancing your device are limited at best. Rebooting your phone and being locked out doesn’t seem very appealing to me. Anyway, not to ramble I’m curious what other manufacturers are contenders for some of Samsung’s modding community users. There are very limited manufacturers who are open to their devices being modified. I’ve stuck with Samsung so long because of their cameras and superb hardware and features but now I’m left wondering can I run a stock Samsung device and all the crap T-Mobile and other carriers load on it. I was reading and some users flashing unlocked firmware on their carrier devices were getting bricked with the new bootloader so no help there. What devices would you consider if you consider if in the future if say CDMA was no longer needed and Samsung ran exynos for all their products and they locked the bootloaders. Would you still use a Samsung unrooted or what manufacture would you jump to?
I’m actually holding off from a Note 8 until I see what the Oreo update brings and what else changes and is locked down. The encrypted CSC's also disallow for enabling some core features T-Mobile disables on their version.
When OnePlus finally starts having the premium features as other flagships do. Goodbye Samsung!

Would most likely stay with Samsung because rooting apart from theming doesn't add much to the Phone imho. It's good and all, some features yeah they suck but I can glance over them because the whole package is good.
If they'd however harden the ability to sideload apps, I'd definitely jump ship to an iPhone.

Understandable, I loved V4A too!
For the adblocking:
You could use Ad-Block/ AdHell to block the ads, completely rootless.
Or what I'd personally recommend (And keep in mind, I'm no rich guy) is DisconnectPro. It is costly at 25€ once, but it sure as hell blocks all advertisements or remotely any ad activity.
Works well inside YouTube too, so it's basically ad-free.
Might give that a go, you can find it inside Samsug's store!

Never been stock so have not tried disconnect pro. I belive it uses Knox? I hate the US carriers disabling features such as the spam caller ID since they want to sell their own product. I used to use csc to enable this but with new encrypted csc this is not possible.

I've tried the VPN adblocks but none of them work as well as adaway. Good suggestions though.

Yeah definitely not better then adaway. Best 1 I've used so far adguard.
probably stick with samsung
i've no longer have any interest to root plus after setting up samsung pay, you cant really go back
not sure why but this is the first android device i've own in the past 5 years that i've no intentions to root at all
nougat + samsung OEM just felt so complete as an android system
After seeing the OEM unlock crap happen on the exynos Note 8 i went and got a pixel 2 XL.
Although admittedly I am a big fan of samsung and have owned a ton of their devices i will not spend my money on device that i cant do what I want with.

I will most likely still stick with the Note line, I rooted and ROMd my 2/3/4 notes but haven't felt any real need to do so with the Note 8, I might at a later stage just for fun but only because I have two of them

I agree that root isnt as necessary as it used to be but its more the principle of it.
If im dropping $1200 or more (im in Canada) on a device i will be damned if i dont have total control over it.

screen is a bit small for porn though
Hello.
I am rooting my all phones starting from nokia 5700 xpress music.(Although it wasnt android, i used to install python and other stuffs).
My last phone was OP2. I rooted that too for screen calibration, cpu throttling, speaker volume, camera and viper.
Honesty i miss viper on note8. Apart from this i didnt found any other reason to root this device while using from last 2 months. Please remember if you root this phone or any other secured phone, you loose knox or other secure feature including payment othions like samsung pay.
I am using Exynos device and pretty much happy with all the performance.
