My phone suddenly just shuts down when I'm using it... not a "powering off" but just out of nowhere turns off
Anyone know what the problem might be?
I've had this same issue before, so I bought a new battery last month and it worked great until just last week...
I've tried resetting the battery stats....nothing....
The battery still fully charges and shows the correct percentage when I plug in the charger to use...
Could it be the ROM or battery issue?
....I'm currently using cannon's rom... 2.2.1
Anyone know how to fix?..... thanks

Well if you have a new battery already. And it shows its good. I think it might be the rom then.

Something to take note, What are you doing when it does this?
-Surfing net on the phone
-Listening to music
-Charging
-Tethering
Keeping in mind that the phone will shut its self down (it should) if your battery starts to over heat. On my Hero the charge light flashes before it shuts down and it gets really hot to the touch. Also at higher heat temps, overall battery life suffers.
my phones shuts down usually when wifi is on and im sirfing or using youtube app or google maps(every time i use wifi for a while this happens...)
it also shuts down rarely on calls and sometimes when im trying to flash a new rom...
it doesnt powers on until i connect it on AC...
I REALLY NEED HELP...
ps:if i change the battery will my problem been solved?

it turns off randomly...even when im just browsing through the home screens... a full charge will last me like 5 minutes max.... no matter what im doing an the battery doesnt overheat at all...
and when i plug it in to the charger, it shows the correct percentage.. well at least an estimate of what it could be (for about 5 min of use before shut down= 95%)
I have the same problem, It is extremely frustrating.
The shutdowns would happen randomly during surfing the net or using google maps. It would shut down out of no where and it would be impossible to turn back without being plugged into a charger since the phone thinks it battery is at 0 even it was just charged to full before the shutdown. I tried to calibrate the battery but it would just shut down while I'm trying to burn through the charge with the screen on. This is the such a nuisance, can't even get through one day.
I am using biffmod 1.8 so I don't know if this is a rom related problem.
I'm havuing the exact same problem. Even with a full battery, the pgone will shut down when I do anything more than a text or two here and there. When I put it on the charger I will still have a significant amount of power left. I've tried doing full wipes and changing roms. I think it might actually be related to the radio. This began after I updated the radio. It would get stck on formatting the cache. I tried going back to the old radio, but the problem has persisted.. and it also got stuck on formatting cache...
I hope someone can help with this bc it pretty much renders the phone useless when it's not being charged. =\
try change the battery...this solve my prob
you could try recalibrating the battery.
let your phone die.
plug it in for so long that you are 100% sure that it is full.
boot to recovery wipe battery stats.
boot normal
use it and let it die.
recharge again until its full BEFORE booting it.
if you sure its full boot normal.
if you follow this cycle some times it should be fine.
Only issue: you have to wait long until its full and you always have to be near an ac
i've tried re-callibration.. guess i will have to get another battery..
i don't think it's the battery though bc others with the same problem said that the problem persisted after getting a new battery.. =\ we'll see.. thanks for the replies.
I have already had 2 defective Atrix HD's. I am trying to decide if it is worth keeping at it, or if I should give up and switch to something else.
My first one had a sudden battery discharge issue, and my second one ended up having a dead headphone jack, after only a month of use.
Poor build quality, or bad luck?
AT&T has been good to me, and has sent out both replacements under warranty exchange. My third Atrix HD is on its way now.
Would say bad luck!
Build qual. is perfect for me!

I have to agree with him. I've had nothing but perfection with my AHD.
I think there's no need to make double threads with the same topic.
It might be a bad luck. I even got my Atrix HD in out of box condition and never had any problems till now.
I agree with the double topics, however he way i phrased it in the initial topic got it closed as pointless. (But the thread complaining about the at&t logo on the front goes on)
Thank you for sharing you experience with me. It tells me that it might be bad luck and i should continue with the atrix and not give up on it.

I am having issues too, I never had these issues with my atrix 1.
1-> Rebooting itself (funny thing is it reboots during the standby(ideal on table or on sofa etc)
2-> Camera initialization error. It is not guarantee to work all the time if i got this error i have to reboot the phone.
3->If the battery is less than 5% screen getting unresponsive even charged fully i have to force reboot to avoid this situation
4-> I can see Android with error symbol during the boot sometimes
5-> No change even after recent OTA
Update: I deleted few apps and disabled all AT&T apps. Now phone working fine no reboots, no camera errors and improved battery. Looks like one App causing all these issues. Don't know exactly what app created these issues.
third phone seems a bit sluggish, but that likely is something I installed. So far so good. Time will tell.
I have noticed another bug, when rebooting while it is charging, I can lock this thing up good (The screen goes blank... but you can tell it is still on. Then the device becomes unresponsive to anything but the force reboot.). I found the force reboot option doing a Google search and got it working. The simple work around is that I never power it down and then re-boot it while attached to the charger.
Thank you for your feedback. It is reassuring to find out that I am the only one with these kinds of issues.
As for the previous poster, if you still have these issues after a hard reset to factory, then I would get an exchange on it.
usually when you shut it off while connected, the phone starts up again into the battery indicator screen, after that loads you can start the phone back up properly
I've got an issue when I tether. My screen goes blank and the phone is completely unresponsive. Once I shut wifi off on my laptop which was using my hot spot the phone awoke with an error that my home screen was unresponsive. :-\

The sluggishness was actually a weather app that was trying to draw overlaying graphics onto my screen, and so every first touch cleared the "clouds" then the second touch was actually acted on by the device... foolish design. I have to figure that apps are/can be a significant factor to the build quality of a phone.
For example, maybe..just maybe my battery issue was driven by a misbehaving app, rather than a physical defect. The device talks to the battery, and the battery talks to the device, and they all talk to the charger. I know in 1 case, the battery was reporting as full. So the device was telling the charger that it did not need any juice. In reality the battery was almost dead, and then it shut off with a fully drained battery. Upon re-boot it was reporting a dead battery, so it then charged. There is no way to tell what caused that communications breakdown.
My headphone jack...well, no arguments, that was a defective part. But on other things you never know.
should I get a replacement?
Should I try to get a replacement based on my phone's bugs?
would a replacement likely be free of these bugs?
I got an unbranded AHD off of ebay, supposedly unlocked (but have yet to try a SIM to test it.. getting one in 2 days).
The "System version" on the phone says 77.55.17.MB886.BellMobility.en.CA, so I'm guessing it's a Bell Mobility model. :cyclops:
The bugs:
-Possible high-rate battery drain while off-
One day I was fiddling with it using WiFi and GPS, and turned it off for the night. The battery was around 60% when I turned it off. (I'm 95% sure it was turned off, rather than put in Sleep). The next day when I turned it on, the battery was down below 30%.
I had "Battery Mix" app installed, and it shows the battery level graph continuously (when the phone is off, on, or sleeping. Battery Mix showed the Battery was being used up at about the same rate while off, compared to the rate it was being used while it was on.
-Battery usage data not available-
Next is a commonly mentioned issue with ICS, although people at Motorola's forums don't seem to have ever seen the issue.
The Battery Usage screen displays : "Battery usage data not available". It will show the on-times for Mobile network, Wi-Fi, Awake, Screen On, and Charging.... but it doesn't how any battery usage for specific processes or apps.
-Mobile network signal, even when no SIM installed-
This is another bug with the Battery screen. For a couple days it was fine, then one day I was installing and trying a few mobile data on/off toggle apps/widgets. Starting after that, the Battery screen shows steady activity for "Mobile network signal", even though no SIM is installed.
(a system monitor app shows that there is no mobile activity).
I've done a factory rest, and after that and with no apps installed, it still shows steady mobile activity. So it's pretty clear that it started after installing mobile toggle widgets, but shouldn't a factory reset erase the cause and result in the absence of the bug?
.. Battery usage data not available-- it would be a helpful feature, but I wouldn't get a replacement because of it.
.. Mobile network signal with no SIM-- Since a monitoring app shows that there is no mobile activity, it's not actually using the battery. However, it makes me wonder if this bug could also suggest a bug with mobile operation.
.. high-rate battery drain while off-- this is more a matter of concern.

Return for bugs? No. If they are the same issues that others are having, then most likely returning it for and exchange would not solve your problems.
The headphone jack. That's interesting. Part of me is hoping that the headphone jack is bad on my new one eventually, because this is my third Atrix HD and AT&T said that I can switch to a different model if this one fails.
I really do like the phone, but I should have waited for the Note 2.(completely different phone, I should have thought it through better)
I was going to return it to Walmart att store and get a one x, but I was out of that. So I then contacted Motorola to get it repaired and they're smoking something up there.

Has anyone else had this problem? since upgrading to a 4.3 sense based rom (tried 3 different roms), my battery life has become horrible..i can barely get 2 hours of screen on time whereas i used to get 4+ on 4.2.2 roms.
i know alot of people have said that 4.3 improves battery, but it hasnt for me, its done the opposite.
also has anyone noticed strange heating up of the device? for example in asphalt 8 the device thats slightly hot and then cools down while playing. but in games like candy crush or zynga poker the device continuously gets hotter and hotter..
tips/fixes/stories anyone?
Mine has been really good. Like, 3-4 hours screen time good. When I'm on wifi (N only, G wifi drains a lot) my battery percent just flatlines on the graph until I pick up the phone again. Sounds like a rogue app since I don't have this issue. I run ARHD 20.1.

I'm running arhd 20.1 aswell. And I would LOVE to see that happen again, my battery drains around 10% overnight, and I'm a really late sleeper, so that means in 5 hours it's lost 10% on standby..and it's weird cause WiFi shuts off after about two hours,so I know that's not causing the problem.
App usage shows android system as the app using the most battery. When I check in the morning it shows android system and kernel to be the top two users.
Could it be a radio problem? I've seen a decrease in signal since ive upgraded to the 4A.17 radio from firmware 2.24.
I'm thinking about flashing the minsense Rom or even a ge rom and see if that helps the problem.
It doesn't seem to be a rogue app cause I actually have less apps then I did on 4.2.2, and none that are new..

I'm still running the current T-Mobile firmware, not 3.x. (I'm still S-ON with hboot 1.44) Thought that was worth noting.
Have you tried putting the phone on WCDMA/GSM auto instead? If your LTE signal is weak (or any kind of signal is weak in general) I see this phone's battery life usually take a nose dive. It has so far from my testing saved me a ton of battery to switch the phone manually into GSM only when I'm inside a building at work to get more bars, then switch back to LTE auto when I leave. Try leaving it on overnight on different radio settings, and with and without wifi. It could be a cell radio drain. And btw get GSAM battery monitor, the stock stats don't seem right to me. Android System being high in the HTC battery stats tells you nothing really from what I'm seeing so far.

the funny thing is i dont have data, since i get wifi wherever i am. i also think its a radio problem though, my gsm signal never seems to be full, and people constantly tell me on the phone that they cant hear me. so what im doing (right now) is flashing a ge rom, specifically sinless rom, then im going to flash the new ge radio, 4A.18, and see how that plays out, prolly going to flash a 4.3 kernel aswell so i can uc to 162mhz or whatever the value is.
i seriously believe its the radio+lack of kernel on 4.3 sense roms that are causing this problem for me. so once this is all done ill test it for the rest of the day and see how it goes. thanks so much for your help

If you don't use any apps, of course system uses the most.
You need to check for wakelocks. If you have unexpected battery drain, it's likely that the phone is not sleeping properly, i.e., being kept awake. Betterbatterystats, gsam, wakelock detector etc.
What was the change in signal attenuation, or are you just saying the the display bars are different?

i use apps, just nothing new compared to when i was on 4.2.2.
and no wakelocks according to gsam, i lost 20% overnight (7 hours)
i dont get what it is. i upgraded the radio to 4.19 now, but for the signal issues, it included lower bars, bad audio in calls, and random loss of wifi.
i removed basically every app, besides some essentials like facebook, whatsapp, and a few others.
i tried switching to an ge rom, but i just cant stay on it for too long, vanilla android is so plain compared to sense.
so the last thing i can think of, is a rom known for its battery life. not asking for a comparison, just your opinion in which rom gives the best battery on 4.3. any suggestions?

Charge your phone up all the way, put it in airplane mode, and unplug it for an hour then don't touch it. Then post your battery percentage. If it isn't still 100 or 99 then you have a more severe problem that actually relates to the battery itself.

Show us a graph of your signal strength from GSAM, and show us a screenshot with how many bars you have. At least you know now that the battery is definitely not shot. It is probably mobile data related...hmm did you ever try letting the phone sit with mobile data disabled as well? It should drain almost as minimally as airplane mode.

its absurd i know..its already down to 93% with 9 minutes screen on..
and its a dual band router, im normally connected to the 2.4ghz band, and its with wireless ac, which the one supports. Which is weird cause i thought ac improved battery life..
edit: im an idiot, wireless ac only works on 5ghz bands, but that still doesnt explain the drain on wireless n..as my previous router was also wireless n

Have you tried 5 ghz N by forcing the router or your phone to operate only at N speed? I use a TP-Link dual band N router and I remember seeing s drain of about 4 percent overnight for 8 hours of full idle with full sync.
I have tried with both 2.4ghz n and 5.2ghz ac, same problem persists
Awake is 3x screen on, I don't think that's normal, somethings keeping the phone awake much longer

so ive done a bunch of other tests, and i can confirm its wifi thats causing this massive drain, not wakelocks, not roms, or anything else.
when the phone is left with wifi on, but not being connected to any network, battery drain is minimal overnight.
its the same on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands, so it this a router problem? if so, do you know any tips that could fix it?

i have no option for best wifi performance, just "wifi optimization". i found the problem, it has something to do with my new router and its bad compatibility with android devices. the phone seems to be awake 2x the screen on time and the main culprit is "wlan_rx_wake" wakelock
My phone is 3 weeks old and it reboots itself randomly. There is no rule, sometimes when reading email, sms, or surfing, cold, hot....
Phone isn't rooted and has original software on, there is no sdcard in it. Warranty is still valid.
Is there something i could try before i send it to service, (tried factory reset)?
Something with Kies?
thanks
same here .. ive send it to service but they return the phone to me again with the same problem..
I have the same problem and also when phone starts after reboot it has ~20 percent less battery...I thought that these random reboots are from one of custom roms that I've installed recently, so when my phone started reboot everytime I tried to watch some video I decided to go back to stock firmware. But today after couple of hours of using I got random restart after a call ;/ Maybe later I'll try to connect phone to pc and take a look what's happening in logs during reboot. Anyone else have this issue?
Same here.... untouched device, battery draining way fast, gets to 40%-60% and randomly starts restarting.... whenever I plug it in again, battery shows 1-4%
My phone can go for a few hours on standby but as soon as I start using browser, play store, camera, etc. it drains and reboots. Can I save my battery or do I try and flush it down the toilet?
P.S. Just rooted today anticipating that I can find a solution.
I'am on Maclaws CM 11 and have still no Reboots anymore
Same issue
I'm having the same issue with my galaxy s3 mini. only thing I've noticed that it won't randomly reboot when it's in the charger. So this means it can't be the powerbutton being stuck like many others are saying on the internet. But what is the solution? I'm really a noob when it comes down to technology.:silly:
Could anybody help us out?

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm having the same problem, the phone randomly reboots when on battery, but not whilst charging; battery status diverges wildly from reboot to reboot - it will say 60% then reboot with 5%.
Is this more likely to be a problem with the kernel and/or ROM, or the battery itself?
I have got the same issues. When I sent it to warranty, the said that the battery was badly placed. When the phone was drobet, it shaked the battery littlebit and it restarted. Thei put somekind of tape to it and worked like a dream
have same problem, batery is just down 60-5%,reboot,reboot,but thats just when mobile data on,when pull charger,no that.Buy new batery,no problem anymore

Sorry, but how can you place the battery so badly that there can get some space between the contacts?!?
Either the dimensions of the battery itself or the dimensions of the "battery-bay" are not correct (anymore?).
When everything is still original, you haven´t used a crowbar and your warranty is active, it´s imho a cheek to let you use some tape...

The case for battery was few mm too big, so the battery had littlebit too much space. It was some manufactured problem. When they put that kind of a tape, I couldn't even saw it first. It just keeps the battery steady...

Bought a new battery as recommended, it works perfectly again :good:
I recently received a Moto X 2014 Pure Edition 32GB. I upgraded from a Moto X 2013 Developer Edition 32GB. Attached is a screenshot of battery so far today. For some reason, cell standby is always draining more than anything, even screen. Yesterday it drained 50% of my battery, however I was unable to take a screenshot before it died. I tried clearing the system cache today and turning off cellular data, to no avail. I don't have a data plan at all but need mobile data on for MMS. I am on Lollipop 5.0. I really need to know if there's any fixes on this issue yet, as it seems to be a major problem. I have scoured the internet looking for an answer and have found nothing pertaining to fixes I haven't already attempted. I just really want to experience the battery life on my new phone to it's full potential. Thanks ahead of time for the help.
SOLUTION: Update Google Play Services to version 7.3.x: LINK
I'm having similar things show up on my Moto X as well. I'm also having google play services up near the top. Was your cell signal weak perhaps? Maybe switching to 3g instead of LTE if you have LTE set as preferred.
I was only without a signal for 4% of the time. I will try changing to 3G and reporting back although I have perfect LTE in my area.
Well, after some time, the 3G vs LTE seems to have possibly helped. I downloaded GSam to try to narrow down the cause. Phone Radio is only 5% of my battery while Screen is 28%. Apps and misc are the rest of it. I think it may just be a glitch in the way Lollipop calculates battery, although I still would like a solution for it.
Check the android os stats also. It may be the one causing the most drain because its keeping awake in the background. From what I understand cell standby stat shows up when you aren't using the phone at all for some time (standby).

Android OS has been awake for 2 hours and the phone has been awake for 6.5 hours.
Here's my stats so far. So I unplugged the phone from the charger 1 am last night. I woke up this morning with 98% battery. So I only lost 2% overnight.

Android os is the culprit in your case. 2 hrs is pretty long. Maybe and app is causing the wakelock along with it. Does your phone get warm at all? My phone does feel slightly warmer once I noticed android os is keeping my device awake for some time. So I usually reboot the phone to stop the wake lock and charge the phone back up.

My phone doesn't get warm at all. The other night I left my phone unplugged at 40% and set an alarm for 7 hours later. I woke up and my phone was dead. Thankfully my girlfriend set her alarm too or I would have woken up late. I'm scared to leave my phone unplugged overnight again for that exact reason. My standby time is awful. I can leave it in my pocket for an hour and it will drain 10%. Is this Lollipop or no? I wouldn't know because I received the phone with Lollipop. Set it up skipping all the Google account stuff just to check for updates, and then wiped again. So I've done one factory reset so far, one cache partition clear, turned off mobile data (and back on after no change), changed from LTE to 3G, and gone through lots of full charge cycles. I still don't know what the problem is...Is the device faulty? I did just receive this phone as a replacement for my faulty Moto X 2013 (battery was bad). Please don't tell me thats the case for this as well.

Which variant is it? I have the at&t one and unlocked it to use for my local carrier and works perfectly. I guess you will have more battery drain if the signal in your area isn't great. Also a rogue app might be running in the background draining your battery. I would also suggest disabling features of the moto x that you aren't using. I only keep the moto display on. Disable the bloatware apps that came with the phone from the carrier.

I have the 32GB Pure Edition. I'm using it with GoPhone. I don't have a data plan. The only apps I've downloaded are Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and a lot of Google apps (Keep, Wallet, etc). I have disabled the features I don't need. Is 40% drain overnight extreme even with a lot of bloat?
I am having the same issue with Moto x pure edition running 5.1, insane amounts of drain while the phone is idle. about 10% an hour. I'm hoping someone finds a solution

Something might be wrong with 40% drain. Your WiFi was on overnight as well along with account syncing? I usually turn off my WiFi before I sleep and get like at most 5% drain overnight

They were. That might be it. I'll try to turn them off next time and see how that goes.
Root and greenify has worked pretty well for me.
You shouldn't see 40% no. That's way too high, even with data on.
My BT and WiFi are on all the time and maybe through a 7 hour sleep, I'll drop maybe 2% to 5%. I'm concerned there may be a rogue app, I have disabled a lot of system things and google apps and have really cut my usage down. And I'm using the moto display and moto voice thing.
Very strange its that high.
Switching from LTE to 3G seems to have helped more than anything else I tried. Actually lasted through the whole day yesterday.
I've been seeing the same thing over the past two weeks or so. Lots of wake time under Android OS. Not sure what's going on.
This is the kind of crap I'm talking about. Its extremely frustrating.
Even here. Screen usage was only 1:42...that's awful.
