Worth Switching to the Nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now I am using a note 4 on at&t and I am thinking of switching over to the 6. Are there any users out there who have gone from the note 4 to the nexus 6? Was it worth the switch? The note has really underperformed and really lags at times.

At this point, if you are willing to wait a few months, rumors have it that the next gen Nexus will be announced (August timeframe). Worst case scenario, it announced and you don't like it best case, the Nexus 6 goes down in price. I didn't own a note but I do enjoy my Nexus - unlocking the boot loader and loading the latest factory images is very easy so you can always be on the latest and greatest. I don't think I will ever go back to anything but a Nexus unless it becomes unavailable.

There`s zero lag on the N6 mate, its firmware is trimmed down to the essentials so no bloatware whatsoever. Its the best device i ever owned and next to that i wouldn`t get back to a smaller screensized phone like the upcoming Nexus 5 (2015) tbh Maybe the next Huawei Nexus 6 (2015) will be interesting too, but atm these are still unconfirmed rumors.

It's the lag on this phone that drives me nuts. It feels like an eternity waiting to open some apps. It is actually slower at opening things like chrome than my old G2 was. Granted that phone was rooted with custom ROM and all but still.

If you like Vanilla android this is the phone to get atm because its fast, snappy, has good speakers and display and it doesnt feel bulky in the hand Besides that i`m done with Samsung, they are way overpriced and still loaded with bloatware.

I have the nexus 9 tablet and like the vanilla android. That is also way smoother than the note. I know one is a tablet and one is a phone but it is still leaps and bounds smoother.

Should I buy the Nexus 6 or a Note 4

Hey everyone, Ive had a note 2 for 2 years now and samsung honestly has a lot of bloatware, also the phone is really slow now that even the youtube app would take 3-5 seconds to open. Which phone do u think is better and did anyone have the experience of their nexus 5 or 4 getting a lot slower in a matter of a year or two?? Thanks

I ditched my Note 2 Wed night for the Note 4 Developer Edition on VZW. If you are on VZW or ATT and you don't get a develop edition it may be a long time (if ever) for root and/or bootloader unlocking. If tweaking the device is important that will play a huge factor. As for lag...I am running a debloated rom (no knox or bloatware) and I froze S-voice...there is zero lag now, but you need root to do that.
I was down to either the Nexus 6 or N4 DE...whichever one I could buy first. I am not a fanboy of either as both have good and bad points and I am sure I would have been happy with either. My favorite thing about android is that if there is something I don't like or a feature I want, there is almost always a way to make it happen (assuming you have root and an unlocked bootloader). Hope this helps.
My short input: Hardware is better on the Note 4. Software better on the Nexus 6.
I chose the Nexus because I wanted to experience Stock Android. But I believe the Note is a better phone overall.

I had the Note 3 before I upgraded to the Nexus 6. In my opinion the Nexus 6 is beast & fast as all hell! I mean this thing is so fast out of the box without need to use a custom rom or anything like that. I never used the stylus so that's never been any issue for me when deciding to upgrade my device. Also the front facing speakers & the screen clarity is seriously AWESOME!
I haven't used a phone in years where I didn't feel the need to alter it to make it perform as I thought it should. I did root mine because I love using Titanium Backup and certain apps like that. I woudn't go back to my Note 3 for anything after using this! I don't recall being so happy overall with a device!!!
PS: I also feel that you will not notice much of a differance between the Note 2 & 4 but upgrading to the Nexus 6 will be a very new experiance you will enjoy!!!

Thanks everyone!
I bought nexus 6 and my sister bought note 4. My sister loves her note 4 and I am returning my nexus 6. Only Note series has right features for big screen. Nexus 6 is not very pleasant in use.
But it all comes down to what you need must. My sister doesn't care about software upgrades so it's a perfect phone her.
There reason I am returning my nexus 6 because of some issues. Battery life is meh. Its just big. And no led? Really I need to root to get it? That's just stupid. There is always cloud app fc. I mean come on brand new phone and a fc. It has no advantage over any other latest phone except the OS (that too experience some lag).
After using nexus 4 and then nexus 5. I am going back to my one plus one. Half Price and better performance then nexus 6.
Just to answer your question, if Samsung keeps their word go with international or developer edition note 4.

anyone coming from note 4 or note edge?

So I just came from note 4 and note edge curious anyone start to (had note 4 and note edge each 1 week of use)
Feel like me? Kinda miss the kidnapper lol
So i m loving the smooth stock experience very smooth however
The note 4 and edge seem to have a bit of the sexiness with them ?
Gonna give this 1 week trial I would probably settle with the note edge if
This don't go well ..lol
Anyone?
I came from Note 4 after 2 months of usage, so far quite like the nexus 6. Battery seems to be better for me with Nexus 6. I use everything at full blast by the way, no power saver or reduce stuff

I switched from an AT&T Branded Note 4 to the Nexus 6, so far I don't miss much, I rarely used the S Pen, the Oxygen Sensor even less, and my Gear Live has a Heart Rate Monitor. I think the Nexus 6 looks pretty sexy myself The Nexus 6 from T-Mobile comes unlocked and bloat free, and is easily bootloader unlocked and rooted, two things the AT&T Note 4 still can't do.
Today is my first day with nexus 6 at work so far smooth ass response and loving it ..I'm in wall street so texted and a lot of emails and messages been 2 hours it is 93%

Went from Nexus 5, gave the Nexus 6 a shot, and ultimately settled on the Note 4 (while keeping the Nexus 5 because it's still an amazing phone and I didn't want to give up on pure Google goodness )
I won't drag this thread into another "which phone is better" banter, just answering your question. Nexus 6 holds it own, Note 4 has a few bells and whistles that may or may not appeal. I've been a Nexus guy for years, and had never ventured into the Note series, so I decided to hold one of each for a while.
After running a SlimLP build on the Note 4, I can say that both the Nexus 6 and this one run Lollipop amazingly. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong w/ either purchase.
I came from note 4 after 2 weeks usage/experience. I had all note series. The only thing I miss is multi window. N6 is very speedy and yes 6' screen is so nice...
P.s I miss also Samsung keyboard with numeric row.

No its actually a legitimate thread ...so far NEXUS 6 is smooth and sexy
I mean you gotta love the way lollipop animate when you touch something
Its more smoother than my iPhone 6 plus holy cow.
Point of it is that note edge or note 4 is also best of the best
So it is confusing since I have 13 days left to play with it.
I do rmemeber tho yesterday when I was watching you tube I was watching 2k
And that's when I know and smile when you hear the stereo speakers and the big ass
Screen doing its thing the nexus way....
Also keep in mind also that note4 will get lollipop it could be sick ..and solve the touchwiz thing anyway 13 days to go
Thoughts?
Coming from the note 4 after a few months. Now 1 week into the Nexus and I love it. Knowing what I know now the nexus would be my first choice. Since I can't compare the two without people getting butthurt, I'll just say there is nothing i miss about the Note 4.

Coming from a note is totaly fine. However maybe its better to wait sucking lollipop first on the note 4 before comparing or pick another device. Snappys will run way smoother but if your on exynos, you wil enjoy more 64bts and full ART runtime as well. Besides that, its already time for next generation 810 soon. So therefore its worth waiting a while more to..
And no, im not gonna bash on the nexus 6 anymore, we had our fun..so did the nexus fanclub and finaly had the thread closed
I realy dont know what to pick coming from a note but the nexus 6...

If i had to pick today, the oneplus one 100% is the perfect phone for in between snappy 805 and 810. If you like buy a expensive note or nexus at this time....waste of money, better a 270 euro phone for now, wait a few months and get yourself that awesome snappy 810. The oneplus one is fast enough while waiting, running CM rom. Most 'bang for buck' phone ever...

That's funny...I'm getting pretty sick of waiting for a Lollipop update that's probably going to be almost identical to what I'm already running and and I've never hit near 8 hours SOT. Want to trade lol?

True, it will be dated, but Nexus phones age much better. The Nexus 5 is still a damn decent phone and gets plenty of support. There are days when I miss it vs. the Note. (Battery isn't great though in comparison.)
My point is that given their track record, if Lollipop is taking this long on the latest and greatest Note, imagine how long updates are going to take when they care even less a couple Android point releases down the line.
And I get 4.5-6 on a good day with the Note, and I'm actually pretty happy with that all things considered. The idle time is phenomenal as well. Three days of light use is not unusual for me.

If you want Lollipop flash it there are a bunch of good AOSP ROMS.
The key differences is the screen and the camera. Both are better on the Note 4.
As far as support goes if you root your phone support will last a long time, my Note 2 is already on AOSP Lollipop 5.0.2
As long as the phone has root, don't pick a phone based on software, you can flash whatever you want on it, pick a phone based on hardware.

I'm reluctant to try AOSP. I owned a Note 2, and CM was buggy as hell.
if your only purpose of switching is SOT let me tell you , you'll be quite disappointed.
You have a lot of people posting 8-9hrs of SOT but not matter what I try what rom i try what kernel i try there's no such thing happening for me.
You literally have to just have the phone on, with screen on without any timeout, doing absolutely nothing.

I personally would go with the note 4, i had the nexus 6 and wasn't impressed by it one bit, had a couple cool features but not compared to this. However, updates will be way faster on the nexus then on this...but the screen on note 4 in my opinion is way superior, i had to keep the brightness at like 85 percent to be able to see everything good, on here, i keep it at 25. Both fast though!
It took them a bit of time to work out all the bugs on CM on the Note2 but once they did it was WAY better than the stick ROM. CM11 on my Note 2 is the best it had ever run. WAY better than TW, better battery, and much faster.

To be honest, the only 3 reasons I went with the N4 were 1) the camera (now not so sure), 2) expandable storage through SD card (I could've just picked up the 64GB N6 and be ok) and 3) the pen.
P.S. @PunishedSnake Please refrain from the click-baiting thread names - clearly state what your question is in as much detail as possible in the subject of the thread to avoid members to have to click on it to find out what it's about.
The Note 4 is hands down better than the Nexus 6 when it comes to HARDWARE. Better camera, better screen, better battery life, IR blaster (remote control), comfortable to hold in hand, removable battery, expandable storage, etc. The only reason I would get the Nexus 6 is because of official support by Google as far as stock Android is concerned. Also the Note 4 will have a better resale value than the Nexus 6 if you decide to sell it. If you ever feel the need for a Nexus like experience with the Note 4 you can always root it to be more Nexus like.
I'd go ahead and return the nexus 6. And get the note 4.
I gave my nexus 6 to my mom.

I'm personally torn.
Having had both, and ultimately sticking w/ the Note 4 only because I still have a Nexus 5 to play around with, I'm just not in love with the Note 4. It's the first phone in the Note series I've owned, and while I enjoy the multi-view and S-Pen capabilities the best, both features are negated when running a non-TouchWiz ROM. Of course, that's to be expected, and not necessarily deal breakers, but I'm indifferent as to how long I'll stick around w/ the device.
To be fair, I should note that I was one of those who got a phone out of the "bad batch" w/ the camera issues, and didn't return it w/i 14 day window nor submit for RMA. Again, for what I personally use the phone for, even that isn't a deal breaker. And to be honest, the Lollipop based ROM I'm running now does hum like a butterfly and have NO complaints about battery life.
Depending on what's on the horizon in a few months, I may utilize the JUMP program or sell outright. Nice phone, for sure, but I think coming from a Nexus, I may be a bit underwhelmed. IMO, if you've come from TouchWiz, or are looking at the camera specs, go w/ the Note 4 and you won't be disappointed.

Samsung Galaxy S6 or Nexus 6?

I have an option between S6 (128gb) or Nexus 6 (32GB), what would you get? Either phone will be free, I am just not sure what to get. I currently use a Note 4 and really have been disappointed by constant freezing and bad Bluetooth connectivity. It always seems that my Samsung phones slow down over time and I don't know if I should even consider the s6.
Any suggestions?

I had a Note 4 and it was awesome, no problems. I went to the Nexus 6 because I wanted an unlocked phone and more timely updates, while my fiance went to the Galaxy S 6.
The Nexus is the clear winner if you want a large phone and like to tinker. But if you want a smaller phone, that is probably a better, faster, higher quality device, the Galaxy is the winner.

Yes the Galaxy S6 has a serious RAM issue that hasn`t even been adressed in the newest 5.1.1 update. Besides that its a breeze to use vanilla android over Touchwizz, bloatware and KNOX. The S6 camera and screen are great though but for the rest the Nexus 6 is the phone to have imo

My Note 4 was great for about 4 months and its been issue after issue since then. I thought about rooting and flashing a rom but Sprint Note 4 doesn't have that many options when it comes to custom roms. I got my wife the S6 and she loves it but all she does is take pictures and text but I am looking to get back into rooting and flashing so looks like the Nexus 6 should be my choice.

I didn't know about the RAM issue, I just updated my wife's to 5.1.1, I'll keep an eye on it and see if she has issues.

I just got my nexus 6 today and love it. My LG G2 was great but the digitizer got the "ghost strip" or whatever you call it when you cant touch part of the screen. Im told a LOT of the phones from LG do that and every model so far from g2 to g4 from what att wireless says. Anyway. Im no samsung fan and i like vanilla. I went with this because i didnt want a Qualcom 810 or 820. Ill wait till Qualcomm or Mediatek comes out in a phone supposedly with the decicores.

I purchased an S6 Edge thinking that it might replace my Nexus 6. I ended up selling the S6 Edge and am happily back to my Nexus 6. The S6 definitely has an advantage in the camera department, maybe build quality (if you like glass), and screen clarity and brightness. The problem with the S6 Edge in my opinion was the amount of real world lag there was with the phone. I figured with the Octacore processor and higher memory the phone would be smooth but that was not the case for me. I even reinstalled firmware, rooted and debloated all unnecessary apps but even then it didn't feel as smooth as the Nexus 6. I don't think the lag was solved with the updated 5.1.1 update either. I also forgot to add that the battery life on the S6 was not good either. These were just my findings so take it for what it's worth.
If you are big on storage space and an amazing camera, with a small we yet more crisp and beautiful screen, go with the S6.the camera is far superior in all aspects.
If you want freedom, a large yet still pretty screen (but not nearly as nice as the S6) and the ability to easily flash and tweak, with a solid vanilla experience, go with the N6.

I am not huge on storage and could easily get by with the 32gb N6. Camera is not a big deal for me since I don't take many pictures but I definitely agree that it has a beautiful screen.
Overall, sounds like the Nexus will be the phone for me. I don't mind the size since I already have a Note 4 and I simply miss stock Android... Can't wait, should have it by mid July.

Cheers!
Get the 128gb s6 sell it and get a nexus 6. Go drink beers with the profit.
If you want an iphone running android then s6 is for you. It got cralpy memory management, you cannot multitask by switching between recent apps. Nexus 6 feels smoother and snappier too. Screen is big advantage of s6 over nexus 6 and so is the camera. So is up to you what you value most.

I also debated about getting the s6 or the n6. But when I discovered the freedom with vanilla android I became hooked. In terms of camera: I don't use it so much, only for snapchat. Internal memory: no problem. So nexus 6 IMO

On my 32GB Nexus 6, I have 1,200 pics, several 1080P @60fps video clips, about 300 MP3 songs, and some work files, my apps, and I still have 12GB free.
I guess that SD storage just isn't as important to me as it used to be, unless you just want to carry your entire music and video library around with you all the time...
My 64GB Nexus 6 has no storage issues, but it frequently moves pictures+video off-phone, anyway.
Even on stock, it's been fast, smooth and practically bug-free since purchase. There were maybe 2 or 3 times that I had to reboot the phone due to a weird hang situation.
I've seen the S6 and although I like Samsung "vivid" displays, the Nexus 6 feels far more realistic and easier on my eyes, while remaining quite crisp.
My pictures with the Nexus 6 have been good to terrific, with the average being around very good/great territory, so I'm quite happy with its camera using the stock app.
I love the Nexus 6 size, especially for these aging eyes. Never going smaller. Ever. So long as I can afford not to downsize.
Apple owners still gawk at my phone. I'm not making that up - I get "wow"-toned questions from them in public places.
Holding onto this phone for awhile, no hurry to get the latest tech, etc. That, and it's become an implicit part of so much I do without consciously thinking about how I communicate, organize, research, etc. My prior phones were all good tools, but this is organically fitting into my lifestyle.

I have both. Other than the cameras and potentially the build quality, there's not much that I miss from the S6. However, I do miss the camera so dearly.
Screen is definitely sharper due to the higher PPI, and also it's brighter and better colour reproduction but keep in mind that the N6 screen isn't half bad.
The reason I sticked to using my N6 majority of the time is due to what many have mentioned - Memory problem. The phone itself is snappy. Touchwiz has toned down a lot and I actually do enjoy it. However that occasional lag drives me absolutely nuts. That 3 seconds wait between taps kills it.
Got my Nexus 6 already....loving it so far!

Note 5, flip it or love it?

Hey XDA
Brief background, want to make this small post here.
Had the S4 for a year, actually enjoyed it for what it was worth, wanted out as soon as we knew for sure there was no root. Stock Touchwiz was just terrible on the 4.
I've never had the chance to own a Nexus device before, my carrier upgrades always came just before the Nexus devices were released, and I've been so ready to upgrade when it comes I jump on it.
This time around I stuck with my G3 for a while. I love this phone. I'm ready for new, and the phones coming out this year are not quite "notable"
I really have my eyes on the Nexus 6P - but US carriers not selling it means I have a decision to make. Got my dad the Note 4 earlier this year, he likes it. I like it the little bit I've played with it. I feel I could even use the Note 5 to replace my notebook in class for notes. ATT bootloader seems to be like the S4. Not much will come of bootloader unlocks with this phone.. It appears.
------
So I will upgrade through ATT, probably to the Note 5. Question is - stay with the Note 5 and learn to love it, despite the experiences I've had with Samsung, or flip it unopened on CL and order up the N6P....??
I really do not want a subpar camera to the G3, nor do I want a dull screen. Both devices seem on par, both no SD, battery not removable on the Note... Cameras both good..
Anyone here want the Nexus 6P?! Willing to get rid of your Note 5 for it?
The 6P looks sweet (literally and figuratively) but I'll never buy a smartphone with the Snapdragon 810. I already have a stove.
If i had a real need for a second phone, Nexus 6P will be my choice
I like Note5 as my main phone, S pen is really helpful, and makes you smart ?

I see. Can anyone here tell me if it's valid to think you could completely replace a notebook and take notes in an 8 hour class day with the n5?

The phone hasn't even come out yet, wait until someone can review it. There are phones with the chip that heat up a lot, and some that don't heat at all.

I've had the Note 5 for a few weeks now, it is an excellent all-around Android phone.
I think the Nexus 6p looks great too, has pros and cons like any phone.
I think the Note 5 is the better all-around device and is the premier flagship Android phone of 2015.
I don't think you could sit and take notes for 8 hours on this phone. Lol. Maybe you could, maybe not. I would never want to do that.
The Nexus 6p is using the SnapDragon 810 version 2.1 - heat issues have "supposedly" been resolved on that version.
Some things to consider with AT&T:
1) You can't root but you can use Samsung Pay
2) Resale value on AT&T branded Samsung phones (Android in general) are lower than other models like T-Mobile, due to the locked bootloader, they usually sell for less/resale for less.
So I don't think you want to take a risk and purchase the phone from them, only to sell it for less.
Worst come to worst, try it out, they should give you 14 days to try it and return it. Something like that.

True and true. I may end up doing that. Will be end of this month or next, don't want to make a payment to pay off my G3, got 4 months left but they usually let you swap with 2 left.
I want to try the N5, the S6 edge has a brilliant screen but not for me.
I just really have my heart set on this N6P. If I don't like what I get with the Note5 I may return it for a iPhone6S and sell that on CL. Should get more $$$ for it. Overnight myself a N6P and I'll be good to go.

It depends if you want stock Android or not. That's all it really comes down to cause the Note 5 has everything else the 6P has for the most part.
I personally can't stand stock Android, so I'm sticking with the Note 5. Stock Android is insanely boring and featureless compared to Touchwiz. And the Note 5 has the S-Pen.

Indeed. That's true. I love vanilla Android. I wish the OnePlus 2 was a bit better... I'd sweep that in a heartbeat.
Touchwiz in my experience has been very Ram consuming and slow with the amazing hardware Samsung has brought to the table. It ruins the phone in my opinion. If course, the Note typically has better optimized software and useful features.
I lean more and more to the n6p every time I look at it. But again, ATT doesn't sell. Going to really suck

I agree, I think somewhere along the line, maybe around lollipop, I started to enjoy the touchwiz version more because of all the useful features built in to the OS.

I've had the Note 3, 4 and now 5. In my opinion, each iteration is slowly getting refined to be a better version compared to the last. If they keep this up, all the old stereotypes about touchwiz will eventually be obsolete.

Old stereotypes are still there... yeah there's less bloatware but have you seen the RAM management on the Note5? Shameful.
Now that the V10 is out I would also consider that as an option. It looks fantastic.

I think RAM management can easily be fixed with a software update.
The Note 5 - even with this "RAM management" issue - is still the fastest, smoothest Note I've used. Hands down!
Software was never a strong suite for Samsung, however, they are learning. Fast enough for some people, slow for others.
It should only get better...

But... Could be neat. I don't think I will wait that long until I upgrade.

Yeah, yet the track record shows Samsung will not upgrade the software's RAM consumption near as much as they could. They just don't have our interests at heart, rather the general public. After all we are a minority on XDA.
May settle for the Note5, will have to find time to go play with one in the store soon..
Otherwise I'll flip an iPhone 6S for the N6P... Ugh.

I say no. It may just be my writing, but I can only fit maybe 4-5 legible words across the screen in portrait mode, which makes for a lot of +New notes, or one lonnnnnnng one.
I've had my fun with it, but I am realizing it's just not convenient to try and pack a tablet into a phone, and use a phablet as a phone. I am now leaning more towards having a tablet for actual writing on, and a phone I can use easily in one hand for texting/emailing/calling.
