[Q] Internal Memory Re Partition - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my friend needs to repartition his Note N 7000 (INDIA VER). I had flashed the Resurrection Remix earlier on but he wants to be able to use his entire internal memory. I want to know the best way to go about re partitioning the internal memory. Can anyone guide me on this? I haven't done these stuff in a while since i got my 4th phone (Xperia C, same problem of internal memory) but I am still fairly informed with these stuff. So no worries if you have any complicated steps ... although simple is easier
On the xperia C, there was a command on terminal emulator and a zip flash. Simple. Anything similar?
P.s: Sorry for the long post! It just feels good and different to be back on Xda forums

The coincidence is too eerie. I just got an Xperia C3, rooted but mine has the full 8GB space allocated instead of the usual two internal memory partitions. Installed 1.3GB worth of apps and still have 1.42GB available
For the Note 1, use this link

Thank You for the quick reply! :good:
And the first thing i did with my brand new Xperia C was root it the day i bought it and re partition it lol. My brother and friends were flabbergasted.
And I never really understood the logic of having 2 partitions in internal memory...Weird. Glad it's no longer in practice.
Will report how it goes.

Rooted G1 with Cyanogen... only 14 MB internal Memory left?

Ok Guys, new to this site, hopefully y'all can help me out.
I recently rooted my G1, Installed the latest Cyanogen (4.7.2.1) and installed a theme ( Marks Theme). I dont have very many apps cause I didnt want to bog down the phone memory.....
I love the set up but it started running slower even after I started running the over clocker widget.
My phone is only showing 14.18 MB of free internal memory. I went through my applications installed and can only find around 25 MB being used from all installed apps ( including browser and messaging etc.)
I even tried to do a factory reset ( by going through the settings) and the factory reset is not working. It changed nothing.
Is there something that Im missing? I feel like I should have much more free memory.
I love the way my phone works and the set up, I just wish it had more free memory so that it would run faster.
Ive thought about doing the Apps2SD but I feel like I chould have much more memory on my phone even before doing something like that.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A section. You'll receive a better response to such things there.
The internal memory you're referring to is your /system partition.
It is where the entire OS is stored, basically. Which takes up, in your case, a whopping 55 MB (out of 70 MB).
If you //really// want more room, follow the Apps-2-SD tutorials out there. You'll get /plenty/ of space.
You could always upgrade to the new amon ra and then let it partition the sd card for you. Then you can have all that free phone storage for whatever it is.Bext time just try to restrict yourself from posting in wrong section
-Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. Is there a way to move this thread?
Also is there a better ROM that will take up less memory? I like this version but obviously it is wayy to large.
Anyone else running cyanogen 4.7.2.1 having this issue?
Most people using the Cyanogen ROM also utilize A2SD. Partition your SD card and you'll get more room.

There is no issue, you just don't have an ext partition ergo, all applications are installed to your phone which is why you have low phone memory.

Hello! app2SD will put the apps to ext...Then you will have more memory, why do you think people use it? To save even more money on geico?
Go here for the amon recovery...

Hi, first of this has nothing to do with development, should be in Q&A. Please remember for next time
OK, when you're on a custom ROM, don't use factory reset. Instead boot in to the recovery image and perform a wipe from there, and that's exactly what I'd suggest. Be prepared to loose everything stored on the phones memory, but you can use a backup app from the market for that... No you really should way more space than that, I can't really explain why...

The phone has two main partitions: /system and /data. It isn't /system that's filling up, it's /data (which makes sense...). The phone can't write to /system when it's unrooted, so it's not possible to store files there...
Everyone is trying to help but for a noob it can be a bit too much...4.2.7.1 is the best Rom available so keep that....RA Recovery is the best way to set up your memory card to accept your apps and keep them there freeing up a ton of space on the phone....simple way to fix is....Just format you sdcard with EXT3 using the RA-recovery v1.5.1 then once your card is formatted just reboot and Cyanogen's rom will move all the apps for you.....will not need to wipe any info on the phone that way...done it many times......Pm me if you need help!!!!

Young Money. Cash Money.
(partition sd card)
The non rooted standard T-Mobile rom is about the same size and will give you about the same amount of free space. There could be a more barebones rom but I think it's just a lot easier to run Apps2SD then to create a rom that might get you an extra 10mb of internal space. This is the fault of the internal memory on the phone being small. The only way to fix that is getting Apps2sd running which if you make a partion of 100mb should be enough to install all the apps you need. Getting a larger SD card for $10 is also another option so you wont have 1/10th of your sd cards storage gone.

You can always try different roms. CM is good and fast, but maybe try dwang 1.13 or Wesgarner version. wg is based on CM. I find it faster and more stable but this is just my opinion. if you back everything up with nandroid and some app like mybackup, you can flash all you want. you'll be able to get everything back with a nandroid/mybackup restore. try different stuff out and figure out what you like!

new razri user few questions

hi
should be getting mine today
how is everybody coping with the low storage issue?
i have been reading up on directory bind and also rickywyatt method
i dont plan on unlocking the bootloader but i do plan on rooting
What low storage issue are you talking about?
While most of them are installed on the SD, I have a lot of installed applications (about a hundred) and I still have more than 3Gb available (internal storage).
An SDcard can be used for your pictures/videos/games, up 32Gb (at least).
If you want to root your phone and don't want to unlock your bootloader, then don't upgrade it.
However, depending on the installed firmware, it may be impossible to root without unlocking the bootloader.
Motorola has fixed the root exploit in the last update.

oh, that was something i wanna ask, so if i download Need for Speed MW the 2 gb will install on the SD?
I can't see that it goes to the sd card everything I have downloaded has gone onto the internal memory
App2sd doesn't work so I think the only two methods we can use are directory bind or the internal swap memory trick

It depends on the application. Some apps put thier "big" files on the sdcard, some won't.
As emu123 said, you can use an app like Apps2sd to move them from the internal to the external storage.
Even if I install a lot of games, I never ran out of storage. That was the case with my old HTC Desire HD.
Big games can use up to 400Mb, I still have more than 3Gb, which means I can install, at least, 7 big games (but some of them will put files on the SDcard if present). It won't ever happen.
EDIT: I think Apps2sd doesn't work with Android 4.x. Not sure, but I think that the system manages where to install apps when internal storage is full.
I already suggested the ability to move apps to the SD card on the motorola forums, Razr I discussions:

I'm not sure the "gosh that's a good idea, we'll pass it on" really counts as an answer - almost as if no-one had ever thought of it before!
Does anyone know how to disable vibro on screen unlocking?
Hi, I set up a thread (in my signature) specifically for for those of us new to Motorola - I just got my first Moto phone 2 days ago too. You may find the thread helpful - I will update it with any info. that people need.
How do you mean low storage? Internally? 8GB (practically 5GB) is low to you? Compared with what? Most phones in the upper tier of mid-range have 8GB and many top-range phones start with 8GB...it seems perfectly normal to me. Either way, do you have an SD card? I've a 32GB for my music and it's now full...some phones load the SDs so slowly...but NOT thins phone, all of my music is found in seconds. :fingers-crossed:

[Q] free space disapeared

Hi,
On the first screens, i've no free space on the phone storage and i've about 3 or 4 apps that need just less than 1gb... What does mean the 4.31gb "other" ?
What can i do to fix that ?
As you can see, part of my application disapeared because of the way in the storage changed...
For example, when i take a picture it's located in storage/emulated/0/picture/screenshot and before it was simply picture/screenshot.
I tried to do a factory reset but nothing change after that...
Thanks in advance

It seems like you have just under 1GB of free space on phone storage.

Ok. Thank you very much that is all I needed to know.
It seems like there is nothing you can do to fix that.
Your applications disappeared because you moved them to the sdcard, but something else also happened or you just need to restart your phone so they will reappear. If you remove your sdcard after moving them to the sdcard, they can appear greyed out like that. There can also be a problem with your sdcard and that is why your apps appear like that and your pictures save on your phone.
Try to change your Primary storage by going into Settings-Storage-Primary storage and set it to Automatic switching. You may have to restart your phone.
I really think there is a problem with your sdcard, ranging from a minor problem all the way up to it is not working anymore.

First, thanks for your answer !
I know there were a part of "other" but this part was not more than about 2 gb before. I don't think the problem is my sd card cause the application i showed you on the screenshot are the only one i did not move ... For example, i had Hearthstone moved and it steel on my sd card.
The picrture was just an example, all my memory moved to emulated/0
And the same for settings/storage/primary is the same than ever
When i plugged my phone with usb to my computer, the internal storage were about 7.60 gb,... And look what i can see now
I can't download what i want with that...
All of that happen when i followed a tutorial to upgrade RAM with ROEHSOFT. I was needing to partition my EXTERNAL storage, what i did. I make a swap part about 3gb and the rest for the storage in fat32. After the partition, i had my 2 part but my internal storage change like what you see on these pictures. I think partition is now in my internal storage & that why the default internal storage way changed... But i have no idea to fix it... Can't use backup, can't part internal storage again, can't factory reset cause it has no effect after reboot...

I think you should delete the apps that are showing that they were on your sdcard then try to reinstall them. They should be in Settings-Apps.
I just looked up the ROEHSOFT RAM Expander (SWAP) app. I have never heard of this app before, but it had this as a note:
Note: only FAT32 Drives can be used for Swap. When you are using a Partition then use fat32 format or swap otherwise it will not be visible in the Drivelist!
It may not be working right because you need to use a FAT32 partition for the SWAP/RAM. If needed you can use Aparted to format the sdcard then use ROEHSOFT again to create SWAP. I found this tutorial. Is this how you did it or something different?

Oh, ok, I didn't know that CWM was available for the 64-bit version. Thanks for that info.
As far as I know our ROMs are KitKat based, which only supports 32-bit devices. It will be good when Lollipop hits our devices as it supports 64-bit devices, but I'm not so sure if the ROMs that were built for 32-bit devices will work for a 64-bit device. You would have to ask the respective developers of those ROMs. My guess is no.

Lollipop needs more internal memory?

Hello everyone!
I flashed my XZR from Kitkat to Lollipop a view days ago.
After flashing I had 1 GB lower internal memory left, than a had before.
In detail, I had about 2 GB of memory left, when I started the download over OTA. The file loaded on my XZR and than it flashed. After end of flashing and reboot, only 800 MB to 1 GB internal memory are free now.
Could it be, that lollipop need 1 GB more internal memory as kitkat? I am confused now, cause I need more space in internal memory.
What happend and what can I do?
Greetings Lemmi.
Yes, lollipop needs more internal memory. Because lollipop is ART based, kitkat was Dalvik...
But 1GB, that is very much cause of only 8GB internal storage.
Try moving the apps to your SD. That's why I did to free up space from the internal storage.

Yes I tryed this already, but it dont helps much. Maybe I have to change to another smartphone with more than only 8 GB of internal memory.
Dont wanna go back to Kitkat, cause I think Lollipop runs smoother and better.
Think about rooting, but I think not everything works well right now on XZR and Lollipop with root and maybe there is no working recovery for it and the secong is I dont wanna open bootloader.
Maybe Link2SD could work and solve this storage problem. Aktually the app2sd function isnt enough on my side.

I have now installed about 100 apps (phone say it took 4,39GB - 900MB Free). After 60 apps installed phone say full storage, so i try scan by Xplore and I find in root folder one rly big folder. That folder is /data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/cache that I deleted and get around 1500MB of space. Seems to be some like thrash from Google Play Store. Root needed.
Ok, that helps me a lot. I will go on and root my XZR again. Think it is simple.
And by the way I read in your signatur that you have root and no recovery.
Here is the way to get a working recovery:

I will try it out, when I have root, but I think it will work!

All you need is Link2SD, I have a lot of apps installed on my phone, yet I still have over 2GB of free memory left
Do link2sd really work with our xperia zr? Cause on 4.4.4 we must do a workaround, cause if dont you end in a bootloop.
Can I use it without any problems on Lollipop now? I will try it, but it could be better, when I know problems before they happen
An how big you make the sdext partition on sdcard?
Just tried FolderMount for ColorDict and Telegram and both work fine.

There's no need for any workaround. I have an 8GB SD card (I don't know its class right now, doesn't matter), and I've split it 5 - 2:
-5GB for the sdcard1 partition,
-2,2GB for the sdext partition, which the Link2SD app uses.
There is a guide that tells you how to format your SD card right, the best way is via the MiniTool Partition Wizard.
If you've selected ext2 in that app, you want to select EXT4 in Link2SD. That way, when you reboot, everything will be fine.
This is because I've seen many bugs when it comes to creating mount scripts - you select ext2, but when you reboot, nothing happens.
Ok, good news.
I knew link2sd well from my old smartphone.
But I always formated the sdext partition with ext4 and normaly it worked. Hope so here too, cause it may be faster.
My SD is about 32 GB, so I can make a bigger partiton. But I think 2 GB should be best.

So do I. The guys at the Xperia M section helped me out a lot with Link2SD
Right now I had made a sdext partition of 2 GB and formated it 4ext.
After starting link2sd and setting mountscript to 4ext I get a bootloop Dont work!
Think I need a fix or a new remount boot fix for XZR. Think the old for kitkat will not work or will it?
Hello people.
Just updated my ZR to lollipop, yet I am suffering form the lack of internal storage, moving apps to my 64gb SD card seems useless, it refuses to transfer large data files to the SD card, like OALD 8 have a 450 mb data file that needed to be placed in the internal storage.
the ZR is really nice fast device but it`s internal storage is so horrible that makes you think seriously about changing the phone .
any help how to free some internal storage with out root?

Try uninstalling apps that you don't use. ARTS in Lollipop needs much more space than Dalvik, so every app counts. This is also true for system app. I uninstall several system apps, mostly from Sony. Then most important of all, after all these, wipe Dalvik and cache in recovery and let the system re-create them again. This process increase the free internal space from 500MB to > 1GB for me.

Galaxy S3 Mini GT-18190N 4.1.2 Create Second Partition with SDcard?

so lost!! please help!
hello there
i have the galaxy s3mini GT- 18190N
uk resident
carrier T-Mobile
android version 4.1.2
kernel version 3.0.31-1436784
ive had the phone for some time now and obviously internal space has became a problem so i looked around the net and it seemed that the first thing i must do was to root the phone....
i rooted with the main intention of being able to put my apps into my 32gb extsd card
secondly to perhaps upgrade the OS to say lollipop
thirdly to maybe try out some of these custom roms ive read so much about.
so i did root the phone using kingroot app, this seemed to help with the speed of the phone/reduced lagging and such but not with internal memory.
i then looked around for a solution and the general answer was to install link2sd and app2sd.
i installed both but had no joy due to no 2nd partition on sd card.
this led me to downloading rommanager (which apparently can create a 2nd partition on the etxSD) well this is when i realised my noobness knew no bounds, because for the life of me i cant seem to be able to do it lol
i looked around again and read as much as i could in regards to creating a 2nd partition on the extSD but again have not found a clear (complete and utter noob proof) guide to do this so am now stuck in limbo
ive read so much this last few days about flash/roms/internal sd/internal phone memory/external sd/nands/backups/backdowns/backflips ect. that i feel completely lost.
i understand this is probably a very tedious request to you more educated folk but what i would like to know is:
1 - can i return my phone to stock settings? (what it was like before i rooted) will this delete all the changes ive made and apps ive downloaded? and is this the best idea? to start all over again from scratch? if so how?
or can i download a custom rom that already has these settings? by settings i mean the ability to move my apps to the external SD? if so, how?
im really sorry for being a pain but my brains gonna explode.
please help
thank you
anyone that can help me please
I had your same problem twice. I just forgot to set the new partition "active".. Did you already check if the partition is primary and active?

hey thanks for the reply!
erm.... how would i do that exactly?
ive downloaded rom manager and tried to create a second partition using that, but that doesnt seem to work either?
i am close to just giving up to be honest, got a 32gb sd card and it just sitting there gathering dust while my internal memory is sucked dry of any space.

You can create and manage partitions with your pc, you just need an adaptor and than you can use "MiniTool Partition Wizard Free" that is a free partition manager tool! :good: Right click on the partition and then "set active" (both partition are primary, but one fs is EXT4 and the other one is Fat32, set active the ETX4 one) :good:
