Hi Everyone,
On my wife's Xperia Z1 I have accidentally uninstalled an App (possibly a system App) which is responsible for allowing the playback of videos. Whenever she (or I) click on a video it does not play, and the message "This file cannot be played with System Player" is presented. Ironically the videos do play in 'preview mode', so at some level the phone still understands that the file is of the video type.
Any suggestions on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Davo

just dl ader player..MX PLAYER is great, it can play almost any video file
Hi mizukage,
Unfortunately 3rd party Apps aren't playing video either. I have tried RockPlayer, etc and the same message is presented. I believe that a 'system app' needs to be reinstalled, but I don't know which one.

First of all, is the phone rooted? if it's not rooted u can't delete system apps.
Otherwise, I can't really see where the problem is. I'd suggest backing up files and reinstall firmware using PCC.

I'm having a problem playing videos from the gallery app.
I can see them in the gallery, but when I click on them I get a message saying "Unable to play video".
If I try to open it from Astro I get "File type <WHATEVER> not found"
However, if I open Rockplayer it works fine. I'm assuming it's because I used TI to delete the stock video player app (thinking rock would just take over), but I can't say for sure.
Has anyone else seen this? If possible can someone link me to the original video player app so I don't have to flash back to stock to get it?
Did you try clearing the defaults in settings?
Unless I am thinking of the wrong thing (settings > applications > manage) I have the following options that sound like they could be applicable (meaning there might be some I'm overlooking):
com.samsung.mobilevideo
com.sec.android.app.videoplayer
rockplayer
none have any defaults set.
is there a way to just globablly reset the defaults?
problem solved
Go to settings, all programs, gallary setting, clear data, force stop if it is currently running, disable the app, wait for few seconds and again enable the app, on first start it will ask default video player select whatever u want and enjoy.
Problem may be the default vedeo player set earlier is uninstalled by u. Thanx
I am having a very similar issue. I record a video. 30 seconds long. I stop recording tap the image of what I recorded, it opens gallery.- I select to play the video. the video opens. I click play and a grey message comes up (unable to Play Video) the standard played just fine. I made no changes to the phone after rooting and installing custom rom. it worked fine. now all the sudden. it will not play videos. (only videos I recorded on the phone) everything else such as web and youtube work fine. this is not the first time I have run into this the only option was to install a retail rom and everything worked great. this is a Samsung galaxy s5 g900v I have spent over thre hours on google and bind searching for a solution and I can tell you..it would seem this is an issue many people are having. I don't like VLC I like the stock player. though I dont know what it is called but I have this Rom (VZW_BPB1_ODEX_DEODEX_V9) it has no file browser and no purple video Icon. (thats the one I dont know the name of) and I am not sure what this rom uses to play video. ..so if anyone has a solution please post it. I tried the above and they did not work. I also tried solutions that were offered on other sites to no avail.
Hi all
Last week got the N700XXLA4 update.
Now I am unable to use Allshare to play back videos (or music) on my Note. The vids are on my Netgear NAS. Allshare sees the NAS, allows me to browse the folders, shows the vids, but when I try to play one, the screen turns black, and after about 10 - 20 seconds, I receive an error message. "sorry Allshare needs to close, please try again later" or somesuch.
Restarted the phone, did not help.
Anyone else having this problem? Ideas how to solve it?
thx
Clearing the app cache may help..
Sorry to say that clearing the cache did not help.
Am I correct in assuming I am the only one who has this problem? Can you guys use Allshare to playback videos (stored on a NAS) on your Note?
I bet an arm and a foot that you've changed the DPI?

Please send them in a fresh box through UPS. I hope you have been working out and they are strong and reliable.
Did not change anything. My device is not rooted - I don't even think it is possible to change the dpi if not rooted.
Anyway, I found a work around. I just use ES file explorer, browse to the NAS shared folders, and open the vid files like that. Then they stream.
Still, bugs me that Allshare won't do it.
I have just opened a bug for Android about video play subsystem failure on Nexus 4! None of my previous Android devices had this problem and this is really bothering me! Anybody else having the same problem?
Android Bug report Link (Please star this if you want it fixed):
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=50814&thanks=50814&ts=1361480369
Problem Description:
I have downloaded a video file to my Nexus 4, opened it in stock Gallery application tried to play it with stock video player and the Gallery Application hanged and crashed! After that, you can't play any video files with the device, not even video files recorded with the device camera. The problem persists until the device is rebooted.
Sometimes, when I open an application that fetches thumbnails of videos (like VidTrim), then without even trying to play the unsupported video file the video play capabilities of the device are completely gone!
You can download a video file that causes this problem from here:

I'm not having that problem. Is it only if you play HD files in .mkv format?

Yes, that is why I'm asking if it's just MKV files.

I don't know if happens only for MKV files. I have other MKV files that does not cause this problem. But this specific file causes the problem %100 on my stock 4.2.2 device.
Can some people with Stock Android 4.2.2 and Nexus 4, try to play the file that I shared and see if the problem occurs?
If the problem occurs, after playing that file, you shouldn't be able to even play videos recorded with your Nexus 4.
Please use the stock video player only for testing.
Wow. Finally! I've got the same problem. Maybe because N4 has minimum codec? I wish 4.3 can solved this.
Edit: In my case, even I can't play YouTube when it happened.

Good to see other people having the issue. It's very annoying.
Can you please "star" the issue so that Google gets notified and fixes it. You can also write a comment under the issue:

By the way, YouTube does not work for me too after trying to play that video file.
Yep, i've noticed it in the last month or so, some of the transcoded movies off my plex server cause it and the phone then requires a reboot before it will play anything at all, good to see it hasn't gone unnoticed by others.

Considering "MKV" is really just a container for other codecs, have you tried seeing what the video and audio are encoded in for this file as well as a file you are not having issues with?

Well, I don't know what that will be helpful for? I'm not the one to fix this problem. Google engineers should do that.
Regardless of the video format and codecs, if the format is not supported then it should not cause all the videos subsystem to break down. It should just say its not supported.
By the way, Android 4.3 improved a little bit. Now the problem is not so easily reproducible like in 4.2.2.

HI All,
My phone has stopped playing all forms of media.
Will not play YouTube, music,video.
Will not record from sound recorder
Will not record video from camera
Will not play startup tmo sound but I get a black screen for about 30 seconds then the tmo logo shows up.
Researched this error an nothing helped.
I recently rooted in hopes that someone can help me out
Been happening for about a month now.
I've noticed that if I play a video with stock lg app the video plays in the background but has the "cannot play video" popup on top and plays without sound.
I really hope it's a software issue an not a hardware
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Check /system/etc and find "mixer_paths_tasha.XML and check the permissions.
Do the same with the other mixer files, make sure to check all boxes in the permissions tab

any other advice?
Hi Everyone,
I am just wondering if there exists an app on Android Auto which only displays pictures (one at a time) which you can select from your phone gallery. I am not referring to wallpaper background which Google has just launched in AA 6.0+. Just like any other app where you can select a song, I would like to be able to select a picture for display.
Thanks for replies.
My best guess is using Plex.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Downloaded and installed Plex but the only options available on AA are Music and Podcasts. You can't access 'Camera Roll' as you can on the mobile device. I presume this may be because of safety?
Sorry but forgot to mention that my phone is non-rooted.

Theres no visual-media app without root. Google doesnt allow that.
Thanks.
