[Q] Another way to get 4.4.2?

Question: Rather than incrementally update from 4.4 to 4.4.2 by OTA, can I just wait until the full 4.4.2 image is available and flash the full image?
I see a nice list of firmwares here, for example:

I'm reluctant to do the update incrementally via OTA or manually, because I don't want to revert from TWRP to stock recovery. As things stand, I believe have a non-stock recovery is preventing me from receiving the OTA that TMobile is currently rolling out.
I have a DevEd GSM and am using TMobile. I'm entirely stock except for TWRP.

Once the US TMobile is available for 4.4.2 you should be able to fastboot (or mfastboot for the system.img) flash the update without losing your recovery. I'm sure someone will post specific steps to update unlocked bootloader, custom recovery phones once the 4.4.2 image is released. I have seen posts warning about not flashing the boot image because it can't be reverted, but I don't know if that affects phones with an unlocked bootloader.

It does affect the unlocked bootloader people, that is why some people are waiting for the sbf. If you update via the OTA, it will install the new bootloader, regardless of lock status. Once on this new 4.4.2 bootloader, it is impossible to flash any stock images before 4.4.2 (you cannot go back to 4.4 or 4.4.2).
But why would you want to go back if you have an unlocked bootloader already? I don't really see any reason to flash an image that is earlier than the latest... if I were Moto, I would let people flash the earliest system image of that version of android (4.4 kitkat in our case). This would rectify the root situation (because 4.2.2 isn't kitkat), and it would keep the people happy as well.

You absolutely can manually flash the system image while having the 4.4 bootloader, you can also flash any 4.4.2 stock based ROM such as the 1052 European ROM that showed up today.
I was actually running the gummy ROM 4.4.2 while still on the 4.4 bootloader without any issue

[Q] Problem while updating

Guys, I have 901E and on android 4.4 with sense 5.5, my device is rooted, bootloader unlocked and S-ON, I am trying to update to Sense 6, as I received an OTA update, as I did before, I returned back to stock ROM that available in this article (DLXPUL_TW_1.21.709.3.zip), then downloading the OTA directly from device, but currently when the update finish, device keeps going on boot loop, (starting device>>>hTC logo appear>>>then restart again), I need to flash boot image from the OTA file in order to bypass this issue......
please advise
EDIT: when updating from 4.2.2 to 4.3 (stuck on boot loop, need to flash boot.img)
when updating from 4.3 to 4.4.2 w/sense 5.5 stuck on the white screen with htc logo and beats audio
I made the same procedure before when I got 4.4.2 update with Sense 5.5 as I was also rooted on 4.3, please help, I might forget some steps....

Well, I, for one, can't help you because from your first post it is not clear at all what you did and what went wrong. Or what exactly you need from us. If you need the firmware image to flash, then just download the OTA package linked elsewhere in this forum, and extract the firmware from there. If you need more help, be more clear.

- what I want: want to update my current version of Android.
- what I had before: Android 4.4.2 with Sense 5.5 and want to update to 4.4.2 with Sense 6 (as I received a notification to update).
- what modification I had: bootloader unlocked with htcdev, device is rooted, S-ON and TWRP installed.
- what I did: I flashed the stock ROM for my device (Android 4.2.2) in order to remove root and return to stock recovery and a complete stock ROM.
- why I did the last step: in order to get the OTA directly from device one by one (from 4.2.2 w/sense5 then 4.3 w/sense5.5 then 4.4.2 w/sense 5.5 and finally to 4.4.2 w/sense6).
- what I got: after flashing the stock ROM (Android 4.2.2 w/sense5) through TWRP, device works fine.

How did you install the OTA updates? Did you flash the stock recovery first, or were you trying to do that with TWRP? Did you try to download and install OTA updates by hand or did you let the phone itself download and install them? What are the precise version numbers involved? I'm not just interested in numbers such as 4.2.2, 4.3 or 4.4, but the full version string of the ROM, in each step. It sounds to me like you're trying to mix different branches of the system.

my friend I am not trying to mix anything, I just flashed ROM version 1.21.709.3 as mentioned above which it is available in the butterfly s General section through TWRP as mentioned also in the instructions in order to return back to stock, means stock ROM and recovery, then leaving the phone to download and install updates by itself

In that case I don't know. You might try to use the latest stock recovery, when installing the 3.06.708.3 update on my phone I found that I had to use the recovery from that update; using anything older just failed.

[Q] Jellybean to Lollipop

I've searched and found variations on these questions in other posts, but I didn't come across any pertaining quite to my situation, so I wanted advice before I do something wrong and brick my phone.
I have a Sprint Moto X, unlocked & rooted, running 4.2.2 (I think pre-camera update). I'd like to upgrade to stock Sprint Lollipop (when it comes out) & stay unlocked & rooted.
My understanding of the steps that need to be taken:
1. Unroot my device
2. Re-lock my device
3. Flash TWRP and boot to recovery
4. Flash stock Sprint Lollipop
5. Unlock, then re-root device
Is any of this extraneous, or am I leaving anything out? Do I need to upgrade to KitKat before going to Lollipop?
I also have Xposed installed and I have tweaked the PRL on my device ... this shouldn't complicate the upgrade, right?

Relocking is useless, and unless you know what you're doing, flashing stock updates in custom recovery shouldn't be done. You don't necessarily need to unroot either, just make sure all stock system files are still in place.

i have a sprint X and if i am going to update this is how i have allways done it with no issues at all.
you can leave your bootloader unlocked that is no a issue. but i always take OTA's and you cant take a OTA with a modded system. so i allways just flash my stock firmware package. that way it removes my custom recovery. Root, and all Xposed changes. Then i take the OTA and just reinstall TWRP, then SuperSU then what ever else you want.
this is the safest way i have found to update, the nice thing about Unlocked Sprint phones is we can easily Root are phones via TWRP and SuperSu.
just my .02 you can do it how ever you like but this is how i am going to do it when the OTA finally comes out if it ever does.

[Q] How to revert back to stock KK?

I've been running LP 5.1.1 using a custom rom but I've been getting tired of the instability of the roms I've tried. I'm wanting to go back to stock KK, am I able to? If so, how? I have a XT1053 and running XenonHD rom. Thanks!

First, start your phone into the Fastboot AP/Bootloader mode...
Unplug phone
Power down phone.
Hold Volume Down and Power
After a few seconds release Power, you should be in Fastboot AP menu on phone.
Take note of the Bootloader version on the 2nd Line. If its 30.B7, then you are fine to just flash the Stock 4.4.4 SBF for the XT1053. To do this, you can use the Requirements and Option 5 listed in the 2nd post of -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425
If your bootloader is NOT 30.B7, then see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-warning-risks-downgrading-impacts-t3058202 before doing any flashing.

My bootloader seems to be 30.B4, is that still safe to use? From what I can tell it's 4.4.2 bootloader.

You can always flash NEWER.... so if your bootloader is 30.B4 or 4.4.2, you are perfectly fine flashing 4.4.4 over top.
You just don't want to flash OLDER..
NOTE: Your situation is slightly different than someone running a STOCK 5.x rom. Because you are running a Custom rom that didn't touch your bootloader and other parts, you can flash back to the stock 4.4.4 ROM. If you had installed a full Stock 5.x ROM (like the leaked test versions), it would be a different matter because your bootloader, partition table, trusted zone, and other parts would have been updated too, and would cause issue if you try to downgrade them.

No the new updates do not relock the bootloader. I suggest you first try out the Lollipop by flashing it through latest version of TWRP. If you think you can live with it than just flash complete stock through rsdlite or manually by fastboot. Reason I say that is because once you take the OTA it will update both bootloader version and the partition tables which means you won't be able to revert back to a lower Android version without the risk of bricking your device.

I don't want to go back to complete stock, I want to keep bootloader unlocked and root. Is there a stock rooted rom out there I can flash w/ TWRP without having to do OTA or flashing the recovery back to stock?

Yes there is its in the development section. You'll read the thread something like xt1053 stock flash-able. It contains only the kernel and system files so you should be good.

First off, there is no Verizon 5.1 yet. So any 5.1 you try will be for a different model, and if you flash a full rom, it will have different radios (which don't work for CDMA that Verizon still uses for voice/3g data. If you keep your stock VZW radio files, keep in mind they will be on a different version than the rest of the rom which could cause some inconsistencies and issues. IF you do flash a FULL SBF, you will be stuck with no SAFE way to revert to 4.4.4 due to GPT.BIN/Motoboot.img (for more on this, see the link in my signature), and you'll have to wait for the Verizon 5.1 SBF to get back to Verizon's rom.
Next, to install an OTA update, when it becomes available, you need STOCK RECOVERY on your phone. The OTA also does a pre-flash check/validation of your phone before it flashes, so if anything it looks for is not what it expects, the OTA will fail. Because of that you need to be 100% stock, or very near to it.
Finally, NO, an OTA will not relock your bootloader, nor will flashing an SBF.

That being said, if you TRY a 5.1 rom that is out there for another model you best bet is to find one that is a TWRP back up of 5.1 installed on someone's phone, since it only updates system.img and boot.img. It may not work 100% (because part of your phone will still have the 4.4.4 files), but it will give you a taste and you could later revert back to the stock 4.4.4 which you currently have on your phone. IF you flash a FULL SBF, you might be stuck with no way to revert to 4.4.4 due to GPT.BIN/Motoboot.img (for more on this, see the link in my signature)

Hi Bushako, I've Moto X Verizon XT1060 and it's struck in 4.2.2 android. When I try to update using setting, about phone and system update it show there is no update available but the android version on it is 4.2.2

5.1 is available for Verizon Moto X 1st gen now isn't it? I am googling for a detailed process on how to update from 4.2.2 to 5.1 and keeping root but not having any luck finding anything. Is it easy to update from 4.2.2 stock rooted to 5.1? The specs of my phone are the same as the original post:

Aug 1, when I last posted in this thread, Verizon 5.1 wasn't available. It is now.
As for updating and keeping root, there are a few ways to do it. Since you say your Bootloader is unlocked, the best way is flash 5.1 SBF, and use the process of flashing TWRP and SuperSU to root and have Write protection Disabled (see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217 ). If you're bootloader isn't unlocked yet, and if you are on 4.4.2 or lower and have NEVER upgraded to 4.4.4 or 5.1, use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader FIRST

Bootloader is unlocked, I get the warning every time I restart the phone.
Where can I find the SBF files? Every post I find from a search the links do not work.
Are the SBF files stock or from someone else's phone?
Do I flash the files with my currently installed TWRP?
When I flash the SBF does it remove TWRP so I have to re flash it?
Are there any radio upgrades/do they get done w/ the SBF?
Sorry if these are basic questions, I have not done much phone rooting since my old HTC Incredible.

There is a link in my signature to a thread containing the known places that were hosting the SBF/FXZ files. That is the only place I can suggest you look.
SBF/FXZ files I'm taking about are stock, and digitally signed by Motorola. They can be flashed on phones with locked or unlocked bootloaders. NOTE: make sure you get the SBF for your device model and carrier!!
You flash these via Mfastboot or RSDLite. When using these tools you are flashing back to stock. After you get the SBF file, see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61142892&postcount=2 and read the REQUIREMENTS section, and pick either Option 3, 4 or 5 to actually flash (only use one option. which ever you find the easiest. Do NOT use Option 1 or 2 as they would not apply to your situation). I usually recommend option 5.

I only say this because 5.1 seems more stable (and less buggy) if a factory reset is done before/during the upgrade process.
