Something strange.... - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, i notice, everytime i flash a new rom, and connect to wifi for the first time, my phone downloads "something", its probably a 20-40mb file, i know this because i have a network speed meter in my status bar, and everytime i connect to wifi for the first time, i see my download speed jump to max speed for a few mins, i just wonder, what the heck it is or how can i find out?
I had this same thing happen on my nexus 5, but only started noticing this when lollipop came out.

Its most likely just cuz the phone is syncing all you're google stuff. Contacts, calendar, playstore, etc.

It could also be a carrier app. Mine installs the T-Mobile account app.
It does it based on the SIM card.

Now you got me stumped lol. I've no idea what else would cause you to use data like that if sync is turned off.

If you have chosen to backup and restore your account through Google settings, then most likely it is restoring your settings and data. Otherwise:

Why didnt i think of that. Duh!
Thats it thats the proof! We were put here by aliens!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

App To Drastically Improve Battery Life.

Did a search and it didn't show any results about an app called Juice Defender....so here's a post about it.
Simply put it disables your apn when your phone is asleep then turns it back on when you go to use your phone.
It will really surprise how much it saves. Instead of my phone having 5% battery life left after normal usage in a 13-15 hour day, I now have 30-35% percent left.
I suggest everyone give it a try. It has customizable options and is a nice alternative for those not wanting to double the size of their g1 with an extended battery, but want more from their battery.
Just search "Juice Defender" in market or here's the link to the website: http://www.latedroid.com/2010/01/juicedefender.html
Doesnt that mean you wont receive calls or texts?

An APN is only required for 3G, so it should still be fine as EDGE/GSM would still be available. Thats the theory anyway.

Exactly I still receive all my calls and texts, and it also has a schedule so it will turn the apn on for a short time every so many minutes. Mine is scheduled for every 30mins my phone is asleep, it turns the apn on for 3 mins. This way I still recieve any updates that require a data connection, such as email or facebook.

The Access Point Name (APN) is required for GPRS/EDGE/3G. It's my job
OT
The reason why the custom ROMs have the "big apn list" is because when you use different carrier sims the APN is typically always different (except a lot of companies use "internet" for their APN). When I went to China last month my G1 automatically knew the APN for China Mobile. China Mobile doesn't have 1700mhz 3G and I used the APN appp to disable internet access so I wouldn't burn through my prepaid minutes. Very nice.
Im not sure this app works. I turned it on, left Hello AIM signed in, sent some IM's to my phone from my PC and my phone was still able to recieve the IM's in sleep mode.
something that I do is that I turn off my gps and my sync option also I only select my sinc for my gmail and not my contacts or my calendar (I unchecg those) I disable the option that allows google to get my location automatically and share my info with google
when Im not using the internet I select the option of 2g networks only
and that saves me ALOT OF BATTERY

Not sure why that's happening, the app definetly works. There's a half second delay when you wake up your phone and you can see the apn being enabled again, as it wasn't there previously. some things to consider:
-You didn't actually activate the app. It's not enough to just install it you have to click on it and select activate.
-You sent the IM's immediately after putting your phone to sleep. It isn't an immediate turn off of the apn, some data may still get through before it completely turns it off.
-Or it maybe a custom ROM problem. Maybe some unique setting is set so your apn behaves differently than the app expects.

This is what I did (and still do) before I installed this app to save battery. Try using the app and you'll see your battery life will almost double.
I can only agree. Works fine for me. Battery lasts considerably longer.

I don't see it on the market?
I see it on developer website as free and has a barcode. I scan it with my barcode scanner and it didn't find on the market either. Is this compatible with cupcake 1.5 ROM or only 1.6 or higher? I like to give this app a try.
Update: OK I looked at the FAQ on dev site and it's not compatible for cupcake ROM. So I guess I have to wait until 2.1 rom comes out.. bummer.

i just searched for it and it is in the android market.
I did a search in the market and found it... it seems to work like the OP said it would... I am still able to receive texts, and I can see the delay when the 3g comes back on. Only time will tell though... If you download the free version, some things are disabled. I might end up getting the paid version later if this really helps.
alright, so i installed it and played around with the settings.
i rebooted my phone and now it doesnt really boot up.
on the lockscreen, i get the 'no service' message. and then it gives me a ton of force closes one right after the other.
so basically, it doesnt allow my phone to boot up. doesnt even get to the part where it gets signal or anything.
im just gonna restore from an earlier backup and see what was wrong. but dunno if this has happened to any of you...

Google Talk won't stay signed in

Google talk will not stay signed in, or is randomly disconnecting and reconnecting later. I've checked my sync and power settings it shouldn't be an idle issue or data connection problem because i have full signal. I didn't have this issue with the Aria?
anyone else having this?
So am I the only one? Did I get a defective device?
Sent from my HTC Vivid
is it giving you any kind of error message? I had that problem ALL THE TIME with my blackberry torch. It kept logging me out saying internal error. That's honestly one of the reasons i got the android. So google apps would work right. I've not had any issues with my google talk. Have you tried logging in with another account just to see if it makes any difference?

no error at all, i lauch the app and it either greys out and i have to back out and lauch again to get the signing in message or i get the signing in message.
I never had these issues with my Aria, i wondered if this version (with the camera/voice options) might have a bug?
tried multiple accts same issue.
i called HTC and the guy said hit home screen instead of backing out of the app to force it to keep running but that did no good. he also asked if i had a task manager and I said only the htc one that came with the phone. He said android comes with that now???? anyway i told the htc one to not start on startup just to see if that was causing any issues but no change.
i still randomly get disconnected from gtalk.
I don't know what to suggest then, that's strange Until we get root it'd be kind of hard to "mess up" an app like that. So I have no idea why it won't stay connected. Maybe take it into an AT&T store, show them, and ask for a new one? IDK if that'd work or not...

no, i don't use that.
in fact, i went through all (i could find) htc/android setting making sure it wasn't a power setting turning off my data or something crazy like that.
Been having the same issue on my inspire for months. Annoying as hell. Tried clearing data and everything else. Just have to live with it.

I have had the same issue since day one.
Google Talk won't stay signed in except on wi-fi
I have a Galaxy S II w/ ICS 4.0.3 on T-mobile and have the same issues. I have done a master reset and have the issue still. I have 3 accounts on G Talk and all sign out when using network only but will stay signed in on wi-fi. It's annoying. I have also tried unchecking the "Away when screen off" box and still no luck.
I've moved on from the Aria, the Vivid and the S3 has not had this issue with me.

Email/hangouts/Google voice message is delayed...

Hey guys, so this has bugged me since the Galaxy s3. I use the note 4 now. I used the Gmail app and most of the time the email is delayed 1-2 mins. Sometimes it can be for 30 mins. Hangouts/ Google voice message is always slower than on my Pc. This is one thing that the iPhone does much better. I used to use the iPhone 6 plus and it's email/hangouts/Google voice messages are instant and faster than my Pc. Anyone experience this? Any fix? Thanks.
P/s: I did check auto sync and notification for every category. The issue is not my wifi because the iPhone is also on this wifi.
I doubt you gonna get a fix. We all experience this.

God this may be a deal breaker for some people especially who works with emails a lot. The iPhone does an incredible job on push service. I bought the note 4 hoping this issue gets fixed...
I don't have an issue with push services, but the applications themselves have been a bit glitch lately. Think it had to do with them being first material theme design releases. Hoping the next releases are smoother.

Same thing here. I'm coming from a M7 and I'm noticing a delay in receiving pushed notifications...
Worst thing is the delay is pretty random. Sometimes it can be 1-2 mins. Other time its 5 mins. I notice at night its significantly delayed up to over 30 mins...
I've searched google and surprised not a lot complaints about this. Google voice message on android is much less useful than on iPhone since the messages are a bit delayed ;(((
I've found the reason. It is indeed my WiFi. When I switch to LTE, email is instant ,even faster than my PC, just like the iPhone. I guess its time to get a new router or some settings need adjusting

Does it happen only on your wifi? Did you try it on another network? I doubt to be your router... It happens to me as well regardless of the wifi network that I'm connected to.
Does the note has any wifi optimization feature as HTC does? Something to minimize battery usage when wifi is on?

I can confirm that on LTE, the email is instant and even faster than my PC,just like the same speed I got on the iPhone. I've been using only LTE for 2 days and this makes me happy since it was almost a deal breaker to me.
However on WiFi its delayed, at least at my home and my school. I experienced delay on school WiFi too. The phone has no issue with wifi, however. There's no drop signal or anything. I don't know why push service is delayed on WiFi. I hope there's a hidden wifi setting somewhere....
Nexus 4 had this problem. I don't think it was ever resolved.

Wow that would suck. If it works on your PC fine then your network is OK. Some settings on your phone are not set right. Post screen shots of your WiFi settings and advanced settings. This will help someone figure it out. Also what router and ISP do you have
BAD ASS NOTE 4
I searched around and found out this is actually a common issue of Android. (searched "delayed notification android"). This can be fixed with an app (need root tho). I switched to unlimited data so I don't use wifi much on my phone any more

Can't Log Into Google Now

Hi, I've been having this issue all day after an factory reset and flash of the factory image. I can't log into Google now and keep getting a network error. Doesn't work on wifi, data, I've done a reboot, wiped cache, force stopped Google search. Nothing seems to work. Was chatting with someone on G+ who said he's having the same problem on his G4. Seems to be happening on new device setups and Factory resets? IDK, anyone have this problem? Thanks.

I think it possible has something to do with the new thing where it signs you into apps such as Netflix automatically. My Netflix is setup to a different hotmail account and I think it may be the culprit...
I was having the same issue coming from M back to LYZ28E. I connected to my Wi-Fi at home and the message disappeared. It's been 7 hours already and haven't seen the message again. So I'm guessing that if you're seeing this message try connecting to a Wi-Fi. It might help...

Not sure this is related only to flashing M. I've had this same problem after flashing a couple of 5.1.1 ROMs and tried clearing cache for Google Now as well as rebooting, uninstalling-reinstalling Google Now, etc. what finally worked was I went into google settings and deleted card preferences. I was then able to successfully connect and get Google Now set up with the cards I wanted.

so now i am unable to sign into my phone at all.. not on stock 5.1.1 not on M... nothing... lol. my phone is a paper weight right now and there is no way im deleting my google account. idk what to do. lol. at all. google has me messed up right now. the phone continuously makes me resign in with no results.
So I switched ROMs and I lost Google now again. Turning on mock locations doesn't fix it. Try a different ROM, I was unable to sign in on a particular ROM as well.

ok... i am live again. i had to revert back to stock 5.0. lol. when i was on stock 5.0 everything worked perfectly, cards, syncing, etc. as soon as i took the ota to 5.1, upon boot, google now cards are borked??? but if anyone else runs into the issue of sign in loop like i did, revert back to 5.0 which was before all the crappy security changes that i dont care about. lol. and then disable the ota notification if you would like to keep google now cards.

OK boys a have a fix. Follow these instructions in this exact order.
1. Flash back to bone stock 5.0
2. Set up phone without signing into google.
3. Open play store, sign in.
4.set up google cards/ they should already be set up. If it ask you to sign in, press skip.
5. Update all apps. You may need to reboot for your apps to show under the "my apps" tab in the play store. I had to.
6. After getting everything up to date. Reboot phone.
7. Press "google" on the search bar on home screen
8. Press get google now cards. Skip the sign in as you should already be signed in.
9. Profit

Transfer WiFi to new phone?

So I have some important WiFi networks saved on my S6. I periodically use a Nexus 6 and every time I restore my Google account to the Nexus 6 it only transfers half of my saved networks. I have tried everything I can think of and I'm at a loss...
I've looked in the WiFi supplacant file, I've tried apps that are supposed to read the passwords - both of these resulted in an obvious encrypted password. I've tried deleting all my Android backups and letting a fresh backup get saved and restore that... I've tried using titanium backup to restore WiFi. Nothing has given me good results...
Any other suggestions? I'm at a loss.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Why not just save the WiFi network on both of them and then it won't be an issue?
I don't think the S6 backs up everything the way the N6 does. The N6 has always restored everything, Apps, WiFi networks, widgets etc... By itself - whereas other devices don't back up *everything* - I doubt you'll be able to do this without getting the password.
Perhaps try resetting the N6 and restore it in the initial setup and have it pull the info from the S6? That might work?

Honestly, idk if there's another way?
Edit: you already tried my suggestion. My bad.
You have your wifi passwords on go to Settings > Backup & reset, put a tick in the box marked “Back up my data”?
That should work whenever you get a new Android phone/tablet and you sign into the new phone/tablet with your G-Mail account that’s the same account for your S6.
Unless the network is hidden and only allows registered devices to even see/connect to it? Idk why it wouldn't pull JUST that network.

I've tried those in the past, as both phones are rooted, but it always just shows an encrypted password. A series of numbers and letters that's definitely not the password. I will try that one tho since it did show my home network correctly on the N6.
The Samsung switch doesn't look promising, it says my Nexus 6 isn't compatible. I will back it up on my computer tho and see if that works.
