I'm quite happy on the 5.0.2 but with all the 5.1.1 problems with rooting and such.
Anyone have an opinion on 5.1.1?
Yes worth it.

There isn't really any issue with rooting 5.1.1, easy as flashing the unikernel. As far as the other stuff goes I honestly haven't really seen any significant improvement that would make me upgrade to 5.1.1 if I had it to do over again. Most of the issues with 5.0.2 have been patched via community fixes. The other issue is, at least for the time being, once you go to 5.1.1 you can't downgrade.

Thanks for your input
Only thing I can really think of is on 5.1.1. you can open apps directly from the lock screen if they have a notification showing.

I just bought my N6 yesterday from Verizon and I spent some time last night reading up on things but I would like some further confirmation from some experienced users. So I've read a few posts where some have bricked their devices by flashing cm12 while on 5.1. The Verizon N6 came with 5.1 already so is it advisable to not flash cm12? And while we're on that topic, is there anything else you should not do while on 5.1? I was looking through all the roms/kernels and some are not updated yet. So if I'm on 5.1, is it ok to flash a rom/kernel that is not 5.1? And the encryption stuff is confusing as well. I'm sure the device will be a little faster with encryption disabled but is it really that big of a difference? I apologize for being a total noob when it comes to Nexus devices. I've never owned one, I've always had HTC or Samsung. I haven't ran cm since I had my HTC Rezound lol so I'm anxious to run it again. So if someone could please tell me what roms I can and cannot flash and just give me some general advice about this phone I would greatly appreciate it.

it is NOT ok to flash a rom for any other version than what youre on. so dont flash any 5.0.2 roms or kernels if youre on 5.1. (exception being the radio. i believe that can be swapped without incident, but youll have to do some extensive reading in the General and Development sections)
personally im on 5.0.2 for now until chroma gets realllll shiny and polished
i havent been encrypted since my first bootup, but my understanding any lag associated with that has basically been resolved

So that could be why people are messing their phones up? By flashing cm12 while on 5.1? I thought I read somewhere that cm hasn't updated to 5.1 yet. Thanks for the info. I didn't think I could flash anything other than 5.1 but this is not a familiar device to me so it could've been different.

Simply inaccurate. You can run 5.0.2 roms after updating to 5.1 without issue. Just don't touch the bootloader. You cannot downgrade the bootloader from 5.1.

The issue with CM was that they had a brute force bootloader flashing script built in. This has been removed.

So the only ROM that had the bootloader included was cm? So I can flash anything I want now? Thanks for clearing things up man.

Anything that is 5.1 yes, I would stick to ROMs based on the "E" build of 5.1, since that's what you're phone came on. Most ROMs are in process of updating to E.

Might want to amend that. DOK2 is the first 5.1.1 build for the 910T and it came out last night / this morning.

Reading through the DOK2 thread, it's also available for the T3.

DOK2 is the newest firwame, you can download it and update over Odin
Is no one concerned that once you flash DOK2 that you can't currently go back to any previous version? What happens if you decide you don't like any of the roms with DOK2 and want to go back, to Firekat for example?

No.
1. N910T3 users never had that option to try Firekat
2. N910T users have had a few months of 5.1.1 ROM ports from Sprint 5.1.1, and some are still available to determine whether they're willing to make the permanent leap.

I installed the modem and baseband, doesn't matter about 'going back' cause I use an awesome AOSP ROM.
The real question is if you're happy with the ROM you are on, why switch?

I'm... potentially concerned. DOK2 seems fine and all, but apparently going forward there will be "no ability to downgrade due to updated security policies". OK, makes some sense, and the Note 4 receives updates so infrequently it's (sort of) less of an issue than with other devices, but what is this "security policy" accomplishing beyond removing user choice/control? Not every firmware version is flawless... for example, let's say DOK...6 reduces SOT by 2 hrs and drops WIFI connections every hour? Whatever, DOK2 just happens to be a much better user experience... too bad, enjoy your bugged firmware until the next update (that is, potentially several months or maybe even never).
Further, I really don't think "regular users" downgrading their firmware to their detriment is a problem... or something that even happens. This policy is really only something that is likely to affect "power users" detrimentally. I mean, I'm all for device security and everything, but it really seems (to me) that anyone who would potentially be considering downgrading their firmware would be quite capable or weighing the pros and cons of doing so.
So there's my essay on the topic.... to summarize, not a negative issue now, but potentially something that could become one, for no discernible reason, in the future.
I've grown to loathe the lollipop update that T-Mobile put out for the z1s. The memory leak issue present has been rather crippling and frankly I'm over it. A while back I rooted thinking I would be on my way to a custom ROM to solve my issues but boy was I wrong. Locked bootloader piece of sheeeet. Anyways, I'd like to stick with my z1s a little longer and wait out all the upcoming flaghips to see what's next. Is there anything I can do now that I have root to improve performance and/of fix the memory leak issue?
What about going back to 4.4? Is that possible now that the baseband updated with the lollipop update and if so how? Assuming working with the current lollipop build on the phone will get me nowere.
Thanks in advance everybody.
Thinking of even flashing back to 4.3 considering I forgot about 4.4s SD card functionality limits...
Unless I can somehow get a factory 5.1.1 image to from lime a different z1 to fully flash into the z1S......
I5.0.2? But why? Flash stock 5.1.1 root it debloat it greenify should help also. If u want stock based rom i recomend flashing MX Rom v8 but imo v 7.8 was better in terms of battery life. Its already slimed down but I debloated it even more running debloatin
g script witch can be found here on XDA. Hopefully this will help you. Good luck
EDIT: I was thinking you have issues with Z1 not Z1s sorry i can't help you with that one

Yeah you got me excited for a minute.
My Note 4 is the older 910T variant. It is still running 5.0.1. I have not taken the 5.1.1 update yet which I blocked using the Debloater. I have not rooted yet because I have a pending warranty issue (GPS) I need to take care of.
Here is my question. Is the root method for 5.0.1 inherently better than that of 5.1.1? If I understand correctly, the 5.1.1 method is systemless and does not use/require a custom kernel and some apps may not play well with this, such as Viper for Android.
I am concerned about this because I suspect Samsung may replace my 910T with a 910T3. This should solve my GPS problems but it seems that it may put me in a less advantageous rooting situation.
Am I correct on this? Can anyone shed light on this for me?
Thanks.

You are correct in that 5.1.1 stock kernel requires systemless root. There is at least one kernel out there that is very close to stock that will accept system root, the name of which I can't remember.
I found systemless root to be almost completely functional, but did hit a roadblock or two (like V4a). Stock kernel is so much better than any other I've tried on touchwiz that its the only one I care to use, though I've given up on touchwiz completely as of late.
There are plenty of touchwiz variant custom ROMs to choose from, varying in different aspects of performance that you may or may not preferable to stock.
Thanks, that was a helpful reply.
If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you actually prefer the stock 5.1.1. kernel. Were you also rooted prior to the 5.1.1. update, using a custom kernel?

I just got my 910T3 a few months ago and it already has 5.1.1 on it. I would not revert to 5.0.1 because of issues it had, like memory leaks.
And yes, I prefer stock kernel. None of the alternatives seem to match the performance or battery life of stock.
I am still running OE2 rooted on my device, and I was wondering with all the new versions up to 6.0.1 thats hit these phones, Have the ability to be rooted?
I still sense "no" from other threads. If thats the case, I think ill stay on the year+ old OE2.
Was just wondering. thanks.
No root yet to SM-G925a on 6.0.1
if you absolutely need root then stay on oe2, but marshmallow is faster and battery saver compared to that. much difference. plus the new security updates keeps the phone more secure.
