Questions about Verizon Nexus 6

I just bought my N6 yesterday from Verizon and I spent some time last night reading up on things but I would like some further confirmation from some experienced users. So I've read a few posts where some have bricked their devices by flashing cm12 while on 5.1. The Verizon N6 came with 5.1 already so is it advisable to not flash cm12? And while we're on that topic, is there anything else you should not do while on 5.1? I was looking through all the roms/kernels and some are not updated yet. So if I'm on 5.1, is it ok to flash a rom/kernel that is not 5.1? And the encryption stuff is confusing as well. I'm sure the device will be a little faster with encryption disabled but is it really that big of a difference? I apologize for being a total noob when it comes to Nexus devices. I've never owned one, I've always had HTC or Samsung. I haven't ran cm since I had my HTC Rezound lol so I'm anxious to run it again. So if someone could please tell me what roms I can and cannot flash and just give me some general advice about this phone I would greatly appreciate it.

it is NOT ok to flash a rom for any other version than what youre on. so dont flash any 5.0.2 roms or kernels if youre on 5.1. (exception being the radio. i believe that can be swapped without incident, but youll have to do some extensive reading in the General and Development sections)
personally im on 5.0.2 for now until chroma gets realllll shiny and polished
i havent been encrypted since my first bootup, but my understanding any lag associated with that has basically been resolved

So that could be why people are messing their phones up? By flashing cm12 while on 5.1? I thought I read somewhere that cm hasn't updated to 5.1 yet. Thanks for the info. I didn't think I could flash anything other than 5.1 but this is not a familiar device to me so it could've been different.

Simply inaccurate. You can run 5.0.2 roms after updating to 5.1 without issue. Just don't touch the bootloader. You cannot downgrade the bootloader from 5.1.

The issue with CM was that they had a brute force bootloader flashing script built in. This has been removed.

So the only ROM that had the bootloader included was cm? So I can flash anything I want now? Thanks for clearing things up man.

Anything that is 5.1 yes, I would stick to ROMs based on the "E" build of 5.1, since that's what you're phone came on. Most ROMs are in process of updating to E.

Is 5.1.1 worth upgrading?

I'm quite happy on the 5.0.2 but with all the 5.1.1 problems with rooting and such.
Anyone have an opinion on 5.1.1?

There isn't really any issue with rooting 5.1.1, easy as flashing the unikernel. As far as the other stuff goes I honestly haven't really seen any significant improvement that would make me upgrade to 5.1.1 if I had it to do over again. Most of the issues with 5.0.2 have been patched via community fixes. The other issue is, at least for the time being, once you go to 5.1.1 you can't downgrade.

Only thing I can really think of is on 5.1.1. you can open apps directly from the lock screen if they have a notification showing.

5.0.1 vs 5.1.1 rooting. Is one "better" than the other?

My Note 4 is the older 910T variant. It is still running 5.0.1. I have not taken the 5.1.1 update yet which I blocked using the Debloater. I have not rooted yet because I have a pending warranty issue (GPS) I need to take care of.
Here is my question. Is the root method for 5.0.1 inherently better than that of 5.1.1? If I understand correctly, the 5.1.1 method is systemless and does not use/require a custom kernel and some apps may not play well with this, such as Viper for Android.
I am concerned about this because I suspect Samsung may replace my 910T with a 910T3. This should solve my GPS problems but it seems that it may put me in a less advantageous rooting situation.
Am I correct on this? Can anyone shed light on this for me?

You are correct in that 5.1.1 stock kernel requires systemless root. There is at least one kernel out there that is very close to stock that will accept system root, the name of which I can't remember.
I found systemless root to be almost completely functional, but did hit a roadblock or two (like V4a). Stock kernel is so much better than any other I've tried on touchwiz that its the only one I care to use, though I've given up on touchwiz completely as of late.
There are plenty of touchwiz variant custom ROMs to choose from, varying in different aspects of performance that you may or may not preferable to stock.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you actually prefer the stock 5.1.1. kernel. Were you also rooted prior to the 5.1.1. update, using a custom kernel?

I just got my 910T3 a few months ago and it already has 5.1.1 on it. I would not revert to 5.0.1 because of issues it had, like memory leaks.
And yes, I prefer stock kernel. None of the alternatives seem to match the performance or battery life of stock.

Worth updating to newer android versions?

I am still running OE2 rooted on my device, and I was wondering with all the new versions up to 6.0.1 thats hit these phones, Have the ability to be rooted?
I still sense "no" from other threads. If thats the case, I think ill stay on the year+ old OE2.

No root yet to SM-G925a on 6.0.1

if you absolutely need root then stay on oe2, but marshmallow is faster and battery saver compared to that. much difference. plus the new security updates keeps the phone more secure.

Question: Using sm-n920c in usa (at&t)

Hi all,
I recently ordered SM-N920C on ebay. I have not received it yet, expect to get it sometimes next week. I am going to use it on AT&T network, and checking several threads here, some mentioned that it works on AT&T.
I have no idea what stock installed firmware come with it (since I don't have the device with me), however per ebay seller listed as SM-N920CZKAXFA, so not sure, it seems like south africa.
ok now here are my questions:
1. Does it makes big differences what firmware it is on if you live in USA (like Google play, Google acting crazy since you are in USA..etc)
2. I heard that there could be issue with getting 4G/LTE performance issue, etc. Do you experience it any differences? or any other issues you experienced while using it on AT&T?
3. I am planing to root it, I know there are couple of custom kernels out there for it, would you recommend stock kernel or custom kernel? I like to keep phone pretty much stock based since this phone will be my daily drive.
4. If you recommend custom stock base ROM, what would be?
5. I hope Samsung brings back "Note" brand! (no this is not question )

I saw that you was asking in the tmo 920t thread the 920c will work great with att, thats what im using mine with and with LTE. Just root with cf-auto root everything you need are in the thread. When i rec. mine it was on 5.1.1 lp but odined to mm. You shouldnt have a problem at all on att with the 920C.

thanks for this info, made me feel a bit better knowing it will work on AT&T. As far as rooting goes, based on my research on threads, most recommends custom kernel(s) for easy rooting, but seems like using custom kernel may introduce some other issues (based on bugs they listed).
are you using it as stock and rooted? or you are on custom ROM?

Every device i own is rooted except my att note 5. You can root with cf auto root from odin with stock kernel but will trip knox 0x1 its no big deal with me being in the states using a international device no warrenty anyhow.. https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ This is the cf auto root just look for the file N920C But this one is for mm firmware. Ive already flashed most of the roms on the 920c thread and all behave pretty good. But with kernels i mostly use stock kernel or skyhigh kernel. Your just have to play around a bit and see what works best for your liking....

same here....I always rooted all my devices (except my Nexus 6P), and I really don't give darn about warranty, and top of this Note 5 (bought from ebay, still did not receive it yet) has no warranty anyway.
so simple download CF-Auto-Root file for 920C and flash it with Odin..done....looks like CF-Auto-Root-noblelte-nobleltejv-smn920c.zip there now says 6.0.1 (MMB29K.N920CXXU2BPB9), so seems like it is up to date.
by the way, someone told me stock kernel gives better battery life than custom kernels......ohh well, like you said, play around and see what works....but I have feeling I will stick with stock kernel (rooted with CF-Auto Root).

Your on the right path then after rooting with cf autoroot with odin first then flash twrp in odin 3.0.2.0 img.tar file https://dl.twrp.me/noblelte/ after you got that set up make a fresh backup of that stock rom so you always have it. Battery life depends on the user and the number of apps each user uses if one gets 5 hrs sot that doesnt mean the other users will..

I finally received my Note 5 - SM-N920C.
One question: when I checked About Device, right under Software Info tab, it says United Arab Emirates, probably the firmware it is on I guess...
well, i guess my first two step will be root it and then install TWRP, then think about trying some stable N7 port ROMs that can be my daily drive without bunch of bugs...

Yup same as mine UAE I dont know what csc its on now i have checked the last few flashes. I'm running a n7 port well thats about all i run on the n5 s6 edge + and n4 now almost forgot tmo n4 also I can send you a thread link by pm in respect to other devs. You got the right order but after twrp do a backup in case anything that would go wrong along the line. Did the n5 have lp or mm. i took mine straight to mm out of the box.....

got rooted, installed TWRP, did full backup, save the backup on my PC....so I am ready for some N7 goodies, PM me for N7 ROM thread you use since you are in USA, so probably you have better experience on N7 ROMs, which is stable works on great on ATT or T-Mobile..etc...

Let me work my way to the thread I'm on the nexus 6p threads today..lol
