[Q] Xperia Z CC063, boot loop after upgrading - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Try to help my brother here, he's not that proficient with tech, anyway, he did a software update, and official one, something to do with Lollipop and now his phone keeps restarting. Sometimes it's a boot loop, sometimes it turns on, you get the Sony screen, the powered by Android screen, you a wavy live wallpaper, then the wallpaper freezing and the phone turns off. Just as I type this it turned itself on again, and is going through the same process, wavy live wallpaper now. I've currently got the phone plugged in to charge, doesn't make a different.
He tried using the PC companion tool, or whatever Sony call it, but that did nothing. The SD has been removed so we know it's not that.
One time I got a popup saying "InitialBootSetup is failing to respond, would you like to close it or wait?". So yeah, things are screwed.
I've rooted and flashed things on my phone but not this phone, this phone in completely stock. What should be my next step? Will it even be recognised in adb in this state? Still on that wavy screen moving about, not frozen yet. The power of volume do not respond while this wavy wallpaper screen is going, phone cannot be turned off.
Would appreciate all help that is given, thanks!
Edit: From my understanding the phone was already on Lollipop, this was just an incremental update, possibly to 5.1 or 5.1.1. It's been dead for more than a week now, when he showed it to me today, the first thing it did was show the "Android is upgrading" thing then all of this started, that is no longer showing.

5.1 or latest hasn't been released yet, so that phone hasn't tried to upgrade to higher than 5.0.2 version. If flashmode is working you can give a try to flash stock .FTF
To enter flash mode, turn off your phone completely and wait at least 30 seconds.
After that, whilst holding Volume Down, plug in your phone in USB, LED indicator will flash once and your PC will recognize your phone (I suppose)
And you're free to go

Trouble is the phone won't turn off, at least not for long enough. Finally got it to turn off after repeatedly pressing the power button but 5 seconds later it turned on again.

Sweet that did it, thanks. Any chance there's a step by step guide for the next part? Haven't rooted a phone in ages, let alone flashing a file I've never had to flash before. Already got ADB, fastboot and all that, just need a bit of direction on what to do with it.

Ok, you just made me confused 'cause you said you've fastboot and etc., anyway.
Just find any desired .FTF for LB here: HERE
For example, :THIS
After downloading .FTF you need to have flashtool by androxyde. After installing flashtool, put downloaded .FTF into /firmware(s) folder and run Flashtool(/x64).exe
Push the "Lightning" button and choose "Flashmode". Then choose the correct .FTF and check all the checkboxes (or choose what do you want to leave, for example, if you'll untick "DATA", your phone's data won't be touched at all). Then pop-up will come up and you don't need to follow at these instructions, you just have to plug in your phone in Flashmode and after you'll do that release the volume UP button and wait while flasher will end all the process.
And when you'll see "unknown sources has been.." or "flashing ended" you can turn on your phone. It could take up to 15 minutes to load.
By the way, it's recommended to have at least 70% of your battery otherwise you can brick/soft-brick your device.
Good luck!

[Q] X8 on restart loop (up to the SE logo)

Hey guys,
First off, from a xda noob, that video you have to see at registration - genius.
Second, to get down to business, I have this stupid X8 (11W48, if it means anything to you) that has been giving me trouble since I got it.
It restarted itself randomly, which was not that big a deal until it started happening every hour or so,
then it started giving me errors all the time (I couldn't in any way enter my settings, force closes it),
and now finally, after trying the button combinations to force a factory reset, it's on constant loop, booting up to the logo and then restarting itself over and over and over again.
I never actually did anything to it, except for the usual apps from the market and stuff, so I guess that wouldn't cause the issue.
Now I don't quite know what to do. I can't go for PCC or Flashtool, really, cause I've tried - it tells me it recognizes the device (provided it doesn't restart right away and kill the connection) but the debugging mode or something is not turned on.
How the duck can I factory reset it? Or fix it at all?
And yes, I've tried searching, but I haven't come across a problem like this.
Please don't tell me to send it to Sony or something :crying:
Thanks
Hey,
Unfortunately I think you've a damaged x8..
I'd send to sony cause there is nothing you can do in the condition it's in. You need usb debugging on to attempt to fix it.
Maybe remove battery for an hour or so. Let the phone go cold inside.
You might get into settings upon reboot.
Good luck!!

Use flashtool....
You don't need to turn on your phone for that...
Here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35338935
Sent from my E15i
don't be panic at this moments, your X8 is just Softbricked Okay! just SOFT.
if it still shows the Sony Ericsson logo,Still vibrate when turn on-its fine.
you need to use PC companion correctly and properly to get the
PC companion recognize your X8
note:-if you have PCC before and used hardly with your X8,PCC may not work properly in repairing our phone
so,
-uninstall completely your PC companion(restart)
-clean Registry and other left over pieces of the PC companion files(Restart)
-download a fresh copy of PC companion here:http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
-install it and restart
-open PC companion and go to the support Zone(wait it to download approx 2mb)
-and click software update on it
-and then click repair my phone.
Note:the firmware and the updating tool download may take as long as half hour depending on your Internet Speed
that's all, just follow the step on screen just tick tick tick and do what its says.
after that select your X8 if its in the list and its says you need to
plug in your device while holding back button.just do it.and you can see some magic automatically on your PC screen.
after finished unplug your device and turn it on. you will back to original pure 2.1 SE skinned android.
IF YOU HATE DOING THE PROCEDURE AT THE TOP!!!
go to http://androxyde.github.com/
download the flash tool and install it.
you need to download Original X8's firmware you can find in Gogeta's signature
you need to put the X8 firmware in the C:/Flashtool/firmwares/drop it here
open flash tool and click the Flash button and it pop-up with default flash mode just click OK
and it shows a window with 2 firmware with included X10 firmware and the X8 firmware that
you dropped in select X8 carefully and don't click anything just click OK
after you clicked OK you will see couple of logs in the screen and says
preparing files for flashing and after seconds it says you need to
connect your device. and do the on screen procedure,
after it detect the device,MAGIC will happen in your PC screen.
that's all simple procedure.
Requirements:
cool head and clear aye.
I went for the Flashtool way - it worked! Thank you so much!
so that why i say don't be so panic or stressed when doing this type of job.
use Flashtool the way it should be and don't play with it too much!
maybe you will hardbrick your X8 if flash non-X8 firmwares...
use Flashtool when necessarily needed.

Really (I mean *really*!) bricked my phone. Nothing works.

Hi p970ies,
EDIT: NEW problems, see last pages.
here is my story:
I was on IZS v1.1, when I decided to go into recovery and make a full-wipe for having a "fresh install" again. You know, the phone was laggy, I had to many apps etc. I pressed the on/off-button for 1-2 secs to reboot into recovery, then my phone turned off and restarted but just with a "bright" black screen, the display was on. I thought "something went wrong", pulled the battery out and put it back in again, started, but then same screen again.
A few months ago an easy "unbricking" method (I know, not really unbricking) was to flash Redy2006's touch-recovery and boot into it with his scripts. So I flashed it (I know it's dumb, because of the u-boot and v30 thing, Idk), same result.
After that, I grabbed smartflash and two .bin/.fls packs of 2 roms, went into that special mode (phone off, press vol+, plug in) but there was no "sign" (screen that shows that you are in that mode) like the other day, the screen kept being black, but on.
Nonetheless the flashing worked and the software said everything alright. I started the phone but same result, in addition that there was now this effect: When the battery is put in and/or the phone is charging, the screen changes from being on and off. I can't do anything, no restarting with buttons, no LG screen, nothing but on and off, on and off. Every few seconds.
Thank you, I hope you experts can help me. (Even when I have the phone 2 years now and I was a ROM-junkie since the first day )
Edit: Tried smartflash with another patched v20 ROM. Tried KDZ Updater, just errors. But now the phone seems to boot, but there's nothing on the display, just the 4 softkeys are fading in and out.

Oh man, its sad to hear that.
I can just think on two situations.
One is a broken screen, but thats pretty obvious.
And the other is a broken boot partition. Its very strange that you cant get into software upgrade mode. You sure you removed SIM, battery and SD, and then plugged it to the cable while holding the volume buttons?
I dont doubt you did it well, just making sure. Anyways AFAIK you should be able to enter that mode unless you got a broken boot partition.
Best of luck, sorry Im not of much help.

Hi, thank you for your answer.
Yesterday oder so, I connected my phone without SIM, SD and battery while pressing vol+ to my pc and it showed the S/W-Update "Wait while update is in progress" or something. I was happy because the display isn't broken. But then I flashed again and the display is as black as before...
I thought about a broken bootloader. Do you guys know a way to fix it? Or the boot partition?

Im pretty sure that if you can see the software update mode, you can unbrick the device.
When you said you reflashed something, do you actually mean that you smartflashed the fls and bin files from a stock v20 rom? AFAIK the bin file carries a bootloader with it so it should get fixed if your problem is the bootloader.
And by the way, while the phone has that black screen and is stuck booting... Are you able to use adb commands? You could try to jump to the recovery with "adb reboot recovery" to see if you got a working recovery.
Best of luck, tell me how it goes

yep, I tried every version (10, 20, 30) in bin/fls and kdz. But I never got the screen to show something again.
And no, I can't use adb commands, sadly. It says "cannot find device" or something like that.

Huhmmm... Quite strange.
You can try to open up device manager, look for the phone (will probably have no drivers and the icon will have a yellow triangle) and force installing adb drivers. After that you are supposed to use adb even in middle of a boot.
I'd say that your best chance is to get to your recovery, so you can wipe everything (even formatting system) and start from scratch...
Anyways Im no expert at all... Just trying to help.

Sometimes ADB works, but it says "device offline". When I flashed PRE-IZS fls/bin from the spanish forum, and then V30B bin/fls, something really weird happens: The phone is on, the wake-button works well - it turns on and turns off the display and the softkeys. But the screen doesn't show anything - just black.
Hello there!
Did You try out the B2C tool provided by LG? And there is one other tool provided by LG. Just try these oit. If they dont work, then try claiming it under warranty. They might replace the motherboard.
P.S: If You have the money, sell this piece of **** and get a Sony or Samsung. Cheers!

An easy, possible fix for The Device offline is to use the latest ADB. Just use the attached zip anywhere and use ADB, its the latest version from the android SDK, but just the files required for ADB. My nexus 4 had the same problem, but Solved it by updating ADB.

did you try patched bins ? (for being able to boot into recovery right after the flash process, maybe you just need right wipes)

Yes, I did, but Smartflash works "less" than the KDZ-Updater. Actually the phone beeped today while it was on (with some kdz flashed) :silly:
Is it possible to convert patched bin/fls files to kdz?
I don't know, probably not... what I can say is that kdzu doesn't perform full wipes since it's intended to update the system and keep datas at the same time. You probably need wipes...

Oh ok... But with KDZ-Updater, it's possible to turn the phone off and on (screens is "on" but shows the color black while the softkeys are on too).
I'll try again with Smartflash... Do you know another version of it or a good tutorial? Maybe I've done the wrong method or something...
there are several tuts in this forum. smartflash is the quickest and safest way to restore / unbrick as it erases everything in the internal memory

ADB side service is not active while in S/W mode. The only chance to access to recovery is to boot normally, and access to the device via ADB. The problems are : device needs to pass initial boot process for being able to be detected by ADB (even if you don't see the desktop it's ok), and USB debug must be enabled by default...
so, if you can't pass initial boot process, no chance to use ADB, and, if it passes, usb debug must be enabled or device will remain offline...

Is there a chance to enable it manually?
the only chance is to flash a ROM which have it enabled by default for the most of them.
mine died because of the new twrp 2.6. It has definitively corrupted the boot partition as even smartflash can't ends its process. I had to buy another device...

PLEASE HELP!!! phone freezes during boot animation and cant get into fastboot mode

ok firtst of all i realize im a dumbass....this is my second phone in the past 2 days, i bricked the first one and was lucky to get a second free of charge, ok heres what i did...after rooting i tried to install a cool boot animation from rom toolbox, after rebooting to check it out, it stops and wont get passed that screen, after a few seconds i cane here a sound but thats it..it will not do anything, i have the c with a locked bootloader..AGAIN I KNOW IM A DUMBASS SO PLEASE DONT BERAITE ME...is there a way to fix this? i dont care if i lose root, this phone is fine with out it:crying::crying::crying:
Okay...first off dont do anything to your phone if you dont know 100% that it will work or is compatible with it. But therr should be a way to fix it
First download flashtool and install it and when everything is installed download a ftf file (its a stock rom) you dont need to be rooted or have your bootloader unlocked. Load the ftf file in flashtool once its done downloading then when the little box comes up, put your phone into flash mode. To.put your phone into flash mode hold the volume down button for 2 seconds then plug your usb cable in while still holding your volume down button and hold it until the little box disappears and it starts to flash the when its done unplug your phone then voilĂ  brand new just like out of the box
Hope I helped you.

If you really want your phone to be rooted then follow the steps here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2583333&page=4
Its basically 4.3 JB with no bloatware and rooted you also follow the steps i showed you towards the end
You have to use custom recovery to flash the zip on the phone then turn off the phone and put it flash mode and flash the 20mb file (its just the boot files) and you'll have the newest firmware available and have been rooted.

[Q] Help! Did I screw up flashing my phone?

I have an Xperia Z1 C6903.
After updating to kitkat, I was disgusted by the new battery life, so looked up how to flash my phone back to jellybean.
I followed a guide I cannot link to in my first ten posts:
xperiafirmware.com/8-firmware/42-sony-xperia-z1-c6903
(Number 2 - flashing to 4.3).
I used the FTT linked there and the flashpro linked there.
Ran fine, here is the log: dropbox.com/s/13883t74e20b61k/flashtool_2014-04-14_06-25-39.log
After completion, I unplugged, booted phone, and now it is stuck in a reboot cycle. Seems to crash during the flare animation screen.
Please help! I've stopped the reboot cycle by running it in flash mode, then disconnecting it from the PC. As soon as I turn it on, the cycle begins again.

I'm not sure how to do this. I'm looking the update option in PCC, but this keeps asking me to turn the phone on, which I can't do. It'll only get to flash mode.

Thank you, this has made the phone functional again. Unfortunately lost messages and such, but not too bad...
I guess I'll run with kitkat a while to see if the battery issue has resolved. If it hasn't, is there a better flash file I can use, or a safer method of going back to jellybean?

Android expert needed to repair bricked phone

ANDROID EXPERT NEEDED TO REPAIR BRICKED PHONE
Anyone in my area know how to fix a soft bricked Android phone? I have a Sony Xperia Z3 compact that is not responsive and I've tried everything and scoured the internet, mostly XDA, on how to get it back. I was trying to flash the Sony Concept Marshmallow ROM with the Boot and OTA, per the instructions in the thread. I wiped my device, flashed ROM, Boot, and OTA. Then I rebooted my device and then nothing, but a black screen and no response from the phone. It does not boot up or turn on. The screen does not flicker or anything. I can hold volume down and power and it will vibrate, but still nothing on the device. I can hold volume up and plug in the device and it will show me the blue led that it is connected to fast boot, but I cannot seem to do anything with it at that point. My computer does recognize it, but I can't figure out what to do from there with Flashtool or any other software.
If you are available where we can meet up that would be fantastic. I'm in the Chicago suburbs.

I think you phone isn't really bricked Try this, maybe it will help:
1. Download newest flashtool
2. Download proper .ftf file from the general section
3. Launch flashtool, plug your phone while holding vol down and wait until the drivers install. Unplug the phone after the drivers install.
4. Click a small thunder-shaped button in flashtool
5. Navigate to a folder with your .ftf file
6. You will see a menu where you can select what to flash and what not to flash. You might want to have everything from the top right window selected (data, cache, apps log will be wiped) and everything from the window below NOT selected (everything will be flashed). Click flash and wait for the files to be prepared.
7. You will see a window with the instructions how the phone should be plugged to a computer. Again, plug the phone while holding vol down, the LED will flash green.
8. Wait for the files to be flashed. If you get any error, try the flashing again after restarting flashtool. If you still get errors, reboot the computer and try again.
I hope this will work and instructions are not messed up but clear to you, I wrote them quickly.

Thank you and these instructions are clear. I have tried all this, but the issue is the Phone isn't recognized properly.
And my Flash tool isn't recognizing .ftf files.
Not sure if this will help ... but in your situation guess one is willing to try anything
Try using Flashtool 0.9.10.2beta6 - this version doesnt require USB Debugging to be turned on - which may be the reason the phone isnt recognized properly???
Looks like your boot.img have gone
Now download stock rom and flash only the boot.img,it may work
Good luck
I had something of a similar issue very recently where flashtool wouldn't do it after i had by stupid mistake wiped EVERYTHING.. I think i had lost boot.img. On startup i would get the very first Sony Xperia screen and then nothing else.
After kicking around a few threads for information i downloaded an older version of flashtool, 0.9.18.5, flashed a complete stock rom with that and all was well.

Hmmm.......curious and you have my sympathy.
Did you have any joy at all with an older version of flashtool? From what i have read around the place if you are getting ANY response from the phone at all in terms of the LED or vibration when power and vol up or down pressed then all is NOT lost. Seems it may be a matter of finding the right combinations of tools and ftf files .
When i was mucking around trying to resurrect mine i did have to install drivers (from the directory in flashtool) more than once as i tried different combinations. Was using my Win7 machine at work rather than my Win10 home PC.
good luck. Will be interested to see the outcome of this as any fix is good to know about.
