My Droid Turbo power buttons seems to no longer make contact (I don't hear any 'click'). I was concerned about these from the start (I've owned it since right around it came out in October last year). At the least, I was able to wake my phone up by calling it and setting the volume rocker to wake the phone. I leave the country in about 12 hours so this is a pretty frustrating discovery.
Anyway, can anyone confirm whether the Droid Turbo turns on after charging after it was turned off?
I've read in another forum that a Qi wireless charger will turn the phone on to charge it- does any know if this is how it works? If the phone is off, the Qi charger will turn it on and then perform a charging? What if it is drained completely? My buddy at work has an Energizer Qi charger, and his phone (Nexus something) did not turn on from being off when I placed it on the charger.
I have USB debugging enabled- would I be able to utilize adb to turn my phone on when it is off?
Thank you in advance, I'd try everything I'm asking except if none of them work my phones kaput.
'adb reboot' might turn it on if you have USB debugging enabled, but I would wait for someone to confirm this (I can't try it right now). I don't know how this would work but one Google result says it does.
For waking up the screen, there is Moto Display which responds to accelerometer motion and Moto Actions, Approach... which senses your hand motion.
I would just not turn it off, turn on airplane mode to conserve battery when not in use, maybe bring another phone as a backup.

Still no workaround?
I just ran into this problem. Power button is completely broken (no click, or any resistance given when pushed in), and phone died last night. The first time this happened, i plugged it in to charge and it booted right up after getting an initial charge of about 5%, but now nothing. The display shows that I'm at %100 charge, but cannot figure out how to actually power on without using the power button. Anyone had any luck with this yet?
Assuming your phone is powered off , Hold volume down key and connect charger cable. You will get into bootloader screen. Disconnect charger cable and connect phone to PC and use the following fastboot command to boot your device without actually using power button for once.
fastboot reboot

Thanks for this. I'm in the same boat. I'm at the bootloader. What do I need to be able to send the command to the phone? Is this what ADB is for?
You're welcome
First of all, you will need to have motorola usb drivers installed in your pc, download and install from motorola
Then, you need fastboot.exe in your p and, execute from windows command line. Have a look at Minimal ADB and Fastboot thread for information on how-to and downloads.
The rest as i posted, when the phone is off, keep volume down key pressed, connect charger, you will be in bootloader mode. This mode will let your phone and pc communicate only via fastboot protocol. So you can use the " fastboot reboot " command to start your device without a working power button.
dude you are the man. this thread and method saved me of having to buy a new phone cause i thought my phone was gonna be a paper weight. thanks for all the info on the fastboot protocol
i love you, thanks man.

Qi Charger Works

The Qi Wireless Charger works whether your phone is charged or not.. I went to the Verizon store and asked to see the charger demo'd... I placed my powered off, Fully Charged, Broken -power- button- Droid Turbo on the charger and it Came to life.
I immediately configured the phone with an alternate power button app to control the screen on/off. FYI None of the apps I found will actually power the phone on from off, but will control the screen once it is powered.
I actually tried everything in this forum short of the disassembly of the phone but that was next... the program download.. Reboot Fast Boot; I couldn't get it to download correctly. after about 3 hours I quit... drove to the store and the rest is history. So Glad Not to have Lost everything!..
When I try this in the command prompt it says The device is not ready. I have all the Motorola's drivers downloaded so why isn't it working?
Thanks so much for sharing the minimal adb fastboot info, my son had issues with his droid turbo power button. I ear raped him for not taking care of his phone. I felt bad but we were both amazed at my new computer skills. im totally a computer retard and powering his phone back up with that program felt great ....THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
You are welcome and i would like to thank to that unknown hero for gifting me one month adfree xda
Thanks - using Qi charger "solution"

Thanks for the confirmation that this works. Not comfortable taking my Droid Turbo apart and would prefer to avoid that if at all possible. I have multiple QI chargers at home and work so hopefully that sustains until I get a new phone in 6 months. Will re-explore disassembly as an option when I find a good video for the Droid Turbo.
The Fastboot method worked perfectly! I'll be able to limp along until I get my upgrade. Thanks!
Like yours, my Verizon Droid Turbo has a broken power switch. I accidentally allowed the battery to drain completely and could not get it powered on. However, I placed it on my QI charger I use for my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and it powered right up. Very happy that worked for me.
stuck in fastboot flash mode
Somehow I uninstalled my OS when trying to flash a ROM, and I'm stuck in Fastboot Flash Mode. My power button is broken. I can use ADB and do "Fastboot Reboot" but I'm still stuck in the bootloop. What other fastboot commands can I use to install a ROM that is on my internal storage? Or I have a download on my computer that I can use... Please help!

Well, using fastboot you can boot to TWRP.
http://lifehacker.com/the-most-useful-things-you-can-do-with-adb-and-fastboot-1590337225
adb reboot recovery
Function: Reboot your phone into recovery mode.
A lot of functions like flashing ROMs to your phone require you to boot into recovery mode. Normally, this requires you to hold down a particular set of buttons on your phone for a certain length of time, which is obnoxious. This command allows you to boot directly into recovery mode without performing the complex finger dance of your people.

From TWRP you can install the OS, you can drag files from your PC to install on your phone, you can RESTORE the backup I KNOW you made before doing any of this.

Thank you for any more help you can provide!

Hi Guys,
I Hope this helps someone because i was tearing my hair out trying to figure this thing out! My lovely perfectly assembled blemish free HTC one was a paperweight
Thought i would update you about a fault that developed on my HTC one 801n On the three network in the UK.
Let the phone battery die as i forgot to put it on charge.
The phone would not turn back on. It would not accept charge and would not connect to PC.
Steps tried:
USB charger < 2 Hours
Genuine HTC One Wall Charger < 24 Hours
Attempting to load boot loader to enable fast boot.
Attempting connection with pc to use ADB to reboot or enter fast boot.
Holding Both volume keys and power keys for 2 Mins
Shining a bright light whilst attempting to turn on (weird i know but apparently it can fool the sensor - reported in some forums)
No LED came one whilst attempting to charge.
After several hours of tinkering i managed to get the LED charging light to come on using volume Up and holding the power button whilst connecting to USB port of a PC directly and the device got warm. I then after 2 Hours connected it to a wall charger for 24 hours. its still would not boot.
Attempted after leaving it for several hours and the LED flashed red but would still not boot.
Managed to get the Solid red charging light to come back and ADB fast boot could not connect to device.
Ran through all troubleshooting steps with HTC. It looks like the battery went below a minimum accepted voltage and therefore as a safety wont accept charge. Im not the only person to have this issue but I've noticed that its mainly rooted users that had the problem and there is a chance the custom recovery that is allowing the drop if fastboot is enabled. I cant confirm this as I'm not technically minded but the circumstances between mine and other peoples issues are similar.
I have managed to get the device to turn on by doing the following:
1) Connect to PC and leave for half an hour and wait until the flashing red LED turns solid RED
2) Open up a ABD fastboot terminal and type fastboot reboot. It will say waiting for device
3) Press and hold volume down and power button and hold until the device vibrates and let go.
4) It will then turn on.
It Seems that the reboot command gets through just quick enough, although the device does not have enough power, whilst attempting to boot into recovery and will load up as normal. Its now working, but just in case there is a fault, I'm getting it replaced as its only a week old and would rather not wait to a point where i cant get a brand new one and would have to wait for a repair through HTC.
My set up was:
HTC 801n
4.2.2 stock rom
rooted (s-on)
CWM Recovery 6.0.3.1
I really hope this helps someone.

Couple of seconds worked for me. it will flash and it will either change to a solid LED by itself or to try and force it hold down the power button.
HTC One problem
How you managed to turn flashing LED to solid LED?
I have same problem but I tried all combinations of volume buttons and power button with charge without charge, with bright light, without bright light and so on and so forth. It is charging for almost 24 hours now and still I can't figure this out.
LED is just flashing and that's it.
I will try your advice with ABD fastboot terminal although I never done this.
But honestly I don't think it will turn on.

It took me about 2 days of tinkering to eventually get the light on! took connecting it to a USB3 port and then trying to get the lihgt to turn solid red.
The phone itself said it was in an awake state even though the screen was off and the phone would not respond!
HTC One
Well I have problems with your solution. As expected.
I can't use ADB tool because it wont recognize my device since it's off naturally.
I connect it my HTC One and when I try to run ADB it just pops for second lists I believe all commands and shuts off.
So if I could run ADB it would be good to try but I can't get him to run either.
BTW I am following guide for installing ADB and using it.
Do you have any advice?

Well ok I did install Minimal ADB and Fastboot tool and tried your advice but no luck.
I am now depressed. Don't know what else to do.

Well it says nothing. After I enter the command it just says "waiting for device" and thats it. I tried power+volume combinations with this command too and still nothing.

I tried that combination. I even kept pressing it for longer period of time (2 min) and still nothing. But every time when the phone is connected to the PC after I press those buttons after 30-45 sec my Windows constantly plays sound (every 5 seconds) that my USB device has been disconnected. If you know what I mean. And then flashing LED indicator turns off. Then I have to unplug USB and plug it again in order for LED indicator to start flashing again.
It is not very hot. But you can feel it is warm.

When I plug it in it just plays that sound that USB is connected and that's it. I went to device manager to the USB section of the list and there is no sign of my phone. Also it's not detected in any other way but that Windows sound that USB is plugged in.
Honestly I haven't tried any other command then [fastboot reboot & fastboot recovery].

Yes. It's always on. Because when I plugged it in when it was working I could see USB debugging mode tuned on. By default both my HTC One and Desire X have it on.
I was checking my phone right now because its since last nigh on charger its very hot.
I read on some thread on this forum that some guy left it on charger for whole 4 day until his LED indicator flashed solid red and then he was able to turn it on.

Did you get this to work?
Based on your post count, this is probably a stupid question but:
You tried charging in an outlet (not through computer), right? Any under-the-hood work makes my Bionic run hot and burn through the battery.
More technical: I read somewhere that someone upgraded to windows 8 and fastboot stopped working. Windows 7 fixed the problem (if you're saying that fastboot is the problem, not Vol - & power button recovery mode).
Were you in the process of rooting?

I am kind of having the same problem. I recenty got a droid bionic where I had to replace the LCD screen and battery since when I got it it did not have a battery with it. I got an NON-OEM extended battery and every thing was working fine for three days. In that time I was able to upgrade everyting to the latest software, fireware, and Android version (4.1.2 JB) but after those three days the phoe woould not power on. When I plugged it into my computer and tried, the white power light would just blink at me. when I unplugged it from the computer and tried it would not even come on. I thought it was the battery so I sent it back and got an OEM extended batter and a OEM dock/charger. When I got everything I plugged it all in and the screen came on with the Motorola M logo and then showed me a picture of the battery at 5%, so I let it charger over night. In the morning I pressed the power button while still plugged into the charger, the phone light up saying the battery was at 100%. So I took it off the charger and tried to power up. Nothing happened. I plugged it into my computer and the white power light came on and stayed solid but still no power-up. I just tries the Volume Up/Down power while plugged into the wall charger and I can get to the recovery screen and try the normal boot up, I get the Motorola M Logo screen, I just now tried recovery and the little Droid just showed up with its stomach with a red triangle and an ! in it and is just sittin there. and now it when back to the Motorola M Logo screen then the battery screen. Does this mean mine is bricked as well? Please some one help.
Bumping because of no help yet. I can access the recovery screen but does not seem to help any, it also has to be plugged into the wall charger for this to happen but I can not power it up whether it is plugged in or not. Please Help someone so I can get this figures out.
Alright strange thing to try, plug it into your computer, while plugged in take it the battery, give it a minute and put it back in while still plugged in.

Did as you suggest but when I took out the battery. the white light stayed on. Still could do nothing. Waited 2 minutes, put the battery back in and still nothing. All I get is the white light staying on. I unplug from the computer, the light turns off and still nothing, not even the recovery screen will boot up.

As long as I keep it plugged into the wall charger I can. When I go there it says "Battery Low Cannot Program Connect USB Data Cable. But as soon as I unplug the wall charger it shuts off and I can not get back to fast boot. When I plug it into the USB cable and plug into the computer, I can not get to fast boot. I just check and it says my battery is at 100%. but when I first plug it in it says 5%.
Your gonna need to charge your battery with either an external charger or the usb charging hack before you can perform an fxz on it

Hi guys,
I've got a problem with my droid 4. 2 days ago, the battery went to 0% and i had nothing to plug my phone to. So after 20/30 with the phone at 0%, i plugged it to charge it. After an hour, i looked at my phone again and i saw it was stuck on the 'Motorola dual core technology' logo. I rebooted it and went to safestrap. safestrap was saying 99% of battery so i was like "meh, it's full, i can unplug it". I did so, reboot again and then it went down while loading cyanogen. I tried to replug it, go back to safestrap and reflash the rom. but the phone went off while flashing and from now on, it doesn't start anymore. So yeah, i know, this is kinda normal, no more system fail flash blablabla.
Here is the weird point. When i plug my phone in, there is first a GREEN LED with no light on the screen for a couple of minutes, and then i got stuck again on motorola dual core logo. I can acces the AP fastboot mode but it keep saying "low battery, cannot program" even after a full night plugged in. All others options goes directly to motorola dual core logo and then got stuck (even the recovery option is doing this). I've found many topics about it but i'm not very sure where is the problem coming from.
Can you guys explain more to me about this problem ? how can i fix it ? do i need to go McGyver ?
Several possible problems
1. safestrap often does not report correct battery charge
2. if battery is too low, phone can not run charging software.
3.. if software is corrupt , phone can not charge battery.
Don't use use pc to charge, if you have a 5v 1amp/1000ma wall charge or better use that.
you can use the MacGyver method, but there is a risk of frying the phone and/or battery.
You can buy and external universal charger like this , but you will need to remove battery.
If it's a corrupt software issue, you can reflash with a fastboot/factory cable TBH Factory Cable Adapter, or Fastboot Motorola Factory Cable-ebay
see if you can get back to safestrap with, with power off, hold both volume buttons, press power button, at Boot Mode Selection Menu> Scroll down with volume down button, to BP Tools, Select with Volume UP button, should boot directly to SafeStrap.
see if battery will charge.

Thanks for your reply.
Here is some more informations i might have forgot in my first message (or maybe it wasnt clear).
1) Batttery is too low, and it can't run the program to reflash a motorola ROM. This is 100% sure.
2) Software might be corrupt since it first went blackout when flashing. I need to reflash, but back to #1 i can't flash since no battery.
3) I tried to recharge it with a 5V/2A asus tablet charger, and even after a couple of hours, no ****.
4) i can remove the battery. I have already done it. No problem.
5) i can't get back to safestrap : every time i choose an option other than "AP fastboot" i got stuck on the motorola dual core boot image.

An extended battery should have enough charge to boot to safestrap or flash firmware.

Well i got some more work for you sd_shadow, even if it doesnt really have nothing to do with flashing.
It appears that the connectors of my battery were completely dead. I bought a new one. I just put in it and reflashed all the stuff. Looks like it works but ... I have problems getting an image on the screen of my phone !! Is it a problem with flash, a hardware problem ? a problem with battery ?
EDIT : just found it is a bad contact. Got to deal with it i guess ... but any hints to repair it are welome !
to be more accurate, the screen doesnt show anything when the phone is closed but works perfectly fine when open ... this is driving me crazy.

You might want to read this thread on the defective screen: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552978 although it does not show a solution for it (yet).
the flex cable can be replaced, and is likely problem, when it only works when the keyboard is in a specific position.

Droid 4 take apart
sd_shadow, i request your help !
So, this morning, i finally had the new flex cable and the T3 corkscrew, so i started to open up my phone to change this damn flex cable.
And if i am posting now, it is because i am stuck. After i got the back of the screen off, i started to take up my actual flex cable.
Here are my questions.
Do i need to heat the screen and take it off to take the flex cable off ?
How do i manage to change the cable where it is connected to the screen ? (Look at the 2 pictures i have uploaded).
I hope to have an answer quick. And i hope i can fix it.
Did you watch the video? http://www.repairsuniverse.com/motorola-droid-4-take-apart-repair-guide.html
it's for replacing the LCD, but shows most of the flex cable take apart.
only need to heat when replacing the LCD.

Yeah i have already watched it but i don't know what to do to with the part of the flex cable that connects to the screen cable.
So here is the situation...I bought my wife and I X4s from Google Fi about a year ago and my wife has recently been complaining about her power button not working (though it still functions via the thumbprint). At first I thought it was her abusing the phone (like the last 3 she has destroyed) but because of her insistence that this time was different and the fact that this is a common failure mode of these phones (example 1; example 2), AND the fact that Google had a 1 day, 1/2 price sale on Pixel 3s, I got her one of those.
So now I have a backup phone that has a broken power button with a workaround. What is the best way to prolong the life of the battery in that phone? Let it power down and leave it idle for a year? Always keep it plugged into a low power USB power source?
PS - any easy way to get chop/chop->flashlight and swivel->camera on onto a Pixel?
Best way is to charge the battery to around 60% and then power off.
Leaving the battery alone for one year with a 1% or a 100% charge would definitely damage it.
That is consistent with other lithium ion battery management (non-cell phone) advise I have found in research and I am going to do it that way. The problem I encountered was that, I can't just power down (broken power button).
That being said, I did find the following using adb/fastboot:
To power down: adb shell reboot -p
This brings the X4 to a powered off state and when plugged in shows a recharge status. However, when you plug it in, it will NOT allow you to do anything without the power button.
To power up: hold volume down and plug into computer. This should bring you to the fastboot menu. On the computer type: fastboot continue That will bring you back in as normal.
Another update. Since it is now my backup phone, I am experimenting. I followed the below instructions to unlock the bootloader and root the phone and it essentially worked perfectly (instructions wise):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/how-to/guide-how-to-root-moto-x4-install-twrp-t3806460
Because my power button is broken, I had to modify the instructions. Instead of booting into TWRP after installing (which requires the use of a power button), I just pushed the twrp image again and then installed magisk.
Note that Motorola's unlock site was sort of down when I did it but there is a forum that Moto regularly checks if you run into problems which is here:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/MOTORO...-Unlock-Problems/td-p/3222809/highlight/false
And yet another update. After I rooted, I installed Custom Quick Settings and created a Reboot quick setting to replace the functionality lost with the power button. There is also a reboot into recovery option that should allow you to get into twrp.
Also, if your power button is broken, you need use the thumbprint as your unlock because otherwise, you won't be able to wake up the phone. I don't know if this works with the noNavigationBar setting but I don't want to risk it.

My phone's button is still not broken, so I did a

and now it powers up when I connect it to a charger.
So I dug my old Motorola droid 4 out of my drawer and decided to fix it. I soft bricked it a while back and just gave up on it. However during this quarantine I've been very bored.... lmao. So I replaced the battery. and now I'm still getting this "Unable to program, Battery low". I understand that it needs to be charged, but how? Everytime I plug in the phone it tries to boot, but of course its stuck so it wont. it just keeps cycling with the "M" logo. and it doesnt matter what phone cord I use, it just turns the device on without charging it. is my phone ****ed? or is there a way to charge it? cause it just wont charge.
Have you tried to charge it up after turning it on not by "standard" holding POWER button but after using [VOL+] + [VOL-] + [POWER] key combo?
There are several options there showing up so the device may be able to enable charging with selected one of the options or at least while showing the menu.
I am not 100% sure if this would work but this would be the first place where I would look for ability to charge the battery without any OS to boot up.
I had the same problem some weeks ago and I found two ways to solve it.
Since you can't charge the phone you can only replace the battery with a charged one (type EB41) or buy/build a fastboot cable (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077414).
I had this problem before too. you can make the fastboot cable. USB Micro cables sometimes have the 5th pin populated, and you need to solder the vcc wire to the 5th pin and it will allow you to flash the phone in fastboot mode. it will simply remove the "battery too low" message in the fastboot screen and replace it with "usb connected" or something like that. It's been a long time since I've used it, and I've since found an eBay seller that has bulk OEM batteries so I bought a few and they've been great.
just search for "make your own fastboot cable" because I can't post links here.
