Lollipop causing phone to turn off - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Idk what's the problem with Samsung phones and updates. I had the same problem with my Note 3 when KitKat got released, I had to get a replacement phone. Lucky for me the replacements Note 3 didn't have the update on it. However I wasn't so lucky with the Note 4.
I accidently hit the update on my notifications when I was half sleep.
Anyways.
Every since Lollipop been installed on my Note 4, it has been a nightmare from hell.
When I installed it on my original Note 4, I kept having my keyboard become unresponsive. Force close on multiple apps (stock Web, camera, calender, and more).
I called T-Mobile to see if they could send me a replacement. They "tried" to fix it, saying that I should do a factory reset and clear cache , which I already tried before I called numerous times.
Finally they said they said they were going to send me out a replacement phone.
I also asked if anyone have been complaining about Lollipop they said no, they were totally oblivious to Lollipop having any kinks (as always ). It's crazy they said that because I have read over 100 post bashing the new update.
I received the Note 4. I turned the phone on and Lollipop was already installed. I called T-Mobile and asked why was Lollipop installed on my replacement, they informed me that they are sending out the phones with Lollipop, and assured there would be no problems with it.
With in the first hour, my phone would turn off and not turn back on. I knew there was nothing wrong with the battery because it was on 90% and it worked flawless with another phone. So I drained all the electricity out the phone and put the battery back in. That worked, but it did over 20 times within that day. I called T-Mobile again , they told me I would have to go to a store and see if they could diagnosis the phone.
The next day I went to the store, everything came back clear on the diagnosis, but they could see it turn off randomly.
I called customer care and explained the situation and told them I need a replacement.
Now I am waiting on a replacement. If this one don't work, I think I will have to get on whole different phone. I'm on the verge of getting a flip phone because I know that I don't want to have an iPhone.
Anyone having these issues with the update Lollipop?

I've never heard about an update getting positive reviews from users, most get bashed.
Fortunately I don't have those issues, nor have I had any with updates. Have you tried to odin the stock firmware? That's all I can really think of.

It seems like I tried everything. I haven't tried that though. I will try that today, if my phone ever boots up.

As long as you can get it into download mode something may be possible.

Odin to stock lollipop, factory reset / data wipe.
Additionally, I would consider a custom rom.
..........
If you really like kitkat better you could also Odin to stock kitkat, factory reset / data wipe.

New Nexus Not Working

Hello,
I bought a Nexus one and as I don't live in a country that sells it my cousin brought it to me.
The device doesn't work and self Reboots giving me 20 seconds of use.
Tryed working with/without a sim,
Did a Factory Reset,
Formated the Sd-Card on my Pc,
and still in the same spot.
any ideas on what else to try before giving up?
anyone had this problem and fixed it?
My phone is not ROOTed and is on Version 1 of 2.1
didn't have enough time to get other info like Baseband and stuff.
I'm not willing to root the phone.
** If i send it back it will make the phone very expensive as i will have to pay costums fee when they mail it back to me
Thanks in advance!
Sounds like a DOA. Really bad luck.
If you send it back you should not pay duty to get it back usually, unless you live in a very tax hungry country! Between US and CAN you would not get duty.
Beside try speaking with cust support, DOA are usually well handled by company and so far HTC seem to be handling repair quite well as per the few post about broken screen I have seen.
Did you try running the phone WITHOUT an SD card ? good luck!

If the boots, has never been rooted (boot unlock), no immediate physical damage, and has no signs of liquid damage or tampering (check void sticker).... it's likely just a software issue. Reload original firmware, or load a new firmware... Don't give up, sounds like the phone is still okay.

So it seems.
Where are you from, Krypton1984 ?
Looks like some rogue app is loading at boot, causing reset. Possibly corrupt ROM image - but not sure. Might be software, might be hardware. But here's one thing to try:
If you're on a T-Mobile-compatible phone (900/1700/2100), do yourself a favor and flash stock Froyo. No need to root for that. The guide is in the sticky thread. In case of corrupted ROM image it'll do the trick.
I think you should factory reset it. Maybe even download the official 2.1 rom and install it. See if it fixes it.
Try a battery trade in first. Believe it or not, my first N1 seemed dead, and support gave me a swap for a new unit. When the new unit came in, it was still "dead" with the battery that originally shipped with the device. A new battery is what caused my N1 to finally come to life. The batteries that ship with N1's have QC issues, because I was one of many to report a DOA battery in the Google support forums.
its brand new,
I didn't pay customs on the way in because my cousin brought it to me, so if i send it back i will and it makes the phone very expensive.
what if when i try to change firmware the phone reboots again without finishing?
i dont want to brick the phone.

Well booting to the bootloader will answer the hardware software question.
1. Turn off the phone.
2. Now press (and hold) the Trackball and turn on the phone.
Once you're in the loader let it sit for a while. If it stays up it's a software problem and a new ROM should sort it out. If it reboots while in the bootloader it sounds like a DOA phone.
Good luck.
You can also try a full factory reset through the bootloader. Search for the instructions as i do not know them off the top of my head

Yeah, North America is all one big happy family. We've got NAFTA and everything now.
OP, I am assuming you've allowed the battery to charge full?

i am having a similar issue. The phone reboots randomly and gets stuck at the static X logo screen. i have to remove the battery and let it be aside for at least 10 minutes before i am able to get the phone up and running again.
i tried updating to froyo. it installed but then froze up again on reboot. i did the battery thing and then started it up, went on fine..froyo had been successfully installed, but my random reboot problem STILL DID NOT GO AWAY..
can this be sorted by installing the original rom image?? or do i have to go in for a swap?!?
i don't want to swap coz they send out refurbished devices,,but its the last option...

You'll probably need to swap based on what you're saying. I, though, actually think Refurbished devices are just as good or even better than new. Think about it, if you keep getting dust under the screen maybe a refurbished phone will already have the fix? For that scenario it works out.

I really think this is a bad RAM issue.
I had this happen to my Nexus (ATT). It was prior to flashing froyo. I tried everything, flashing back to stock (including radio), cyan's latest, Paul's (stock) Froyo (with and without radio). Same result. Seemingly random reboots.
I thought initially that it was a software issue - It would not reboot while in fastboot/Amon's Recovery. But having tried every software combination, I've concluded that it MUST be hardware, unless I'm missing something big.
The phone, for the most part, would be fine as long as I DON'T TOUCH IT. It would stay idle for a long period of time (24hrs+), then I would use it Everything from web browsing to downloading apps to making calls, and it would reboot. It's frustrating because it seems that it's rebooting for no reason except that I'm touching it.
Sent in for a replacement, it arrives today. Hopefully it will not suffer this problem.
After talking with HTC they told me i need to swap the phone.
Because i'm out of america i need to send it to someone in the US amd then they send him the new divice after he sends my old one,
I am not satisfide with google's (first guy I talked with) and HTC because none of whome understand the severity and the hard feeling of getting a BRAND NEW IN BOX paper-weight. nothing about we'll compensate you or nada.
For me it tells me the brand is not strong enough to manage an outer state service and i wouldn't recomend them for countries that they don't cell it for.
If you where born in a HTC GOOGLE compatible country enjoy!
As i'm am probably less lucky and still in 2010 nationality counts

[Q] Stock Dialer Gone Bad, Used Odin and Kies, Still bad! Help!

Ok, so Friday morning I woke up and my phone was stuck in exhibition (desk) mode. I had to remove the battery twice to get it to boot into android and stay there.
This is a NON ROOTED Captivate. Using stock Froyo from Kies.
After I get it into Froyo, I went to make a phone call, and then the dialer sends the call, and vanishes. The phone freezes. The call goes through, but I now have no access to the rest of the phone. No ability to use the dial pad, or even to shut off the phone. I have to manually remove the battery.
After 48 hours I was pissed off. I'm out of warranty with AT&T by a month because I bought it on launch day last year.
So I used Odin to reset it to stock Eclair, and tested it, worse than in Froyo! The phone actually froze and the call didn't even go through! So I re-updated via Kies.
I'm back to square one. I have no idea where to go from here. HELP! I don't want to suffer this until the Galaxy S 2's come out here in the states, and I don't want to flash it to a custom rom if at all possible. Resetting it to stock should have fixed the issue if it was software, right? So it has to be hardware, right? But how does that make sense that only the phone function would be affected?
HELP!
Thanks in advance,
Tiberius Reign
^ Any recently downloaded app, widget, etc. that could be suspect ?? Anything come to mind that u may have done right before this started ??
I see u went to stock eclair, but i ask the above just in case u might have reinstalled everything after u went stock.
I tested the phone without installing any apps. I had a worse problem. The damn phone rebooted. I upgraded back to Froyo, and it became manageable. I saw someone else who was having similar issues with com.android.phone freezing and locking up all the time. Mine does it some of the time, and it's getting worse. I tried the delvik clear etc that was listed, and it still didn't help.
I'm kind of at my wits end here.
A lot of us i think are starting to have this problem. I had started a thread a while back about it but was never able to solve the problem. here is my original thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168128

i think would should all stick to replying back to one thread maybe this one because its newer, this way it can be easier for us to help each other find a solution to this problem.

[Q] A Couple Questions

Hi everybody, I'm new to LG, this is my first LG phone since my original LG Vu many many years ago, and i have a couple questions. I've searched everywhere here on XDA and a couple other forum sites, as well as general google searches. First off my Flex is on 4.2.2 and it doesn't seem I have any way to update to 4.4.2. Whenever I try the update from my phone it says "your phone is not registered" and when I try with the LG computer software it just says my device is up to date. I've seen the not registered error mentioned a few times before and I tried the suggestions given, like getting a new sim card and doing a factory reset, but no luck. I've seen a few people mention that they flashed the update manually with something called LG Flash Tool, but I cant find any info on that whatsoever. My model is the AT&T D950 by the way. Secondly I am having absolutly horrible lag with this phone, specifically list scrolling, mostly in apps such as Google+, YouTube, and Facebook, all the reviews i read before getting the Flex said it was super smooth, thays why I got it, so is there something I should so, or is lag like this normal? Because I can't scroll through YouTube or Google+ without it hanging every couple seconds. If anybody that has more experience then me with this phone or LG in general could help me out with these or just point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciatex.

If you are on AT&T, take the phone to the store and have them update it for you. If you are on another carrier you will have to manually flash the update. As for the lag, I have also just got the Flex and I have not had any lag, but I have always done a Factory data reset before I do anything else.

Yeah I'm on AT&T. Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately nothing seems to work. I've tried downloading the LG PC software from their website but it just tells me I'm up to date, I can't find any info on how to use the LG flash tool thing, and I just went into 3 different AT&T stores, one of which was a device support center, and they all said they have not way to flash the LG G Flex because LG stopped supporting the tool they had to flash it with so it no longer works. So it looks like I'm stuck on 4.2.2. It's a shame really because I really got this phone to test out LG before the G3 comes out to see how I would like it since I'm up for an upgrade, and I absolutely LOVE it, but I'm not dropping money + a contract on a phone that might have issue upgrading the software, I mean we already wait long enough for android updates on non-nexus phones, but then even when it's available you can't update it because there is some sort of issue between AT&T and LG servers. And the worst part is it's not just me or this model phone. I have seen tons of people having the same issue with G2's and G Pro 2's but nobody seems to be able to figure it out. It really suck. But thanks for all the tips and help, like I said I really appreciate it!
Just want to give an update for anyone else that has this issue and might come across this thread. After going to 2 more stores, getting 2 more new SIMs, and 2 more factory updates, then spending about an hour on the phone with tech support with them trying to "push" the update to me, then another 2 hours on chat support with them trying to "push" it to me, I am no closer to any kind of solution.
Just another update, AT&T filed a case and I can now check for software update through settings, and it tells me an update to 4.4.2 is available, but once it downloads the update fails, it tell me my device is suspected of rooting and software update is not available for my device. My device is not, and has never been rooted. So I don't know where to go from here. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in my 4+ years with android lol. My next phone will definitely not be an LG phone, which is a shame because I just got this one to test out LG while waiting for the G3 to make it to AT&T.
did you buy this new?
isnt there a warranty from ATT?

Can you post a screenshot of the message you're getting that says your device is suspected of rooting?
Yes I bought it new from an AT&T COR store. Yeah it has warranty, I actually just went to the support center and exchanged it after explaing that it has never been rooted or else I would post a screenshot, I didnt even think about doing that, I remeber the error exactly though, I must have tried it a dozen times. When I went to software update it said a new update is available and I clicked yes to download, after it downloaded it rebooted into that LG screen with the cartoony hills and stuff and it said updating 0% for about 2 mins, the in big letters it said ERR:0x0011341, and it rebooted back into the ROM and everthing loaded up, after about a minuter I got a popup that said Error: Your device is suspect in rooting, your device is not available for software update, then any time I tried to run software update that popup would come back up unless I did a factory reset, then it would start the whole thing over with the same results. Like I said, I just got a replacement and am downloading the update now, I'll post back and let you know what happens.
Its not that unusual for a phone to get hosed when trying to download/install an OTA update.
Is is unusual for a message like you saw, about being a "suspect" for rooting; I don't think I have ever heard of that before..
All that matters is you got a new phone, so thats a good thing
Yeah i thought it was weird too, the weirdest pat was i did the return to stock from the other thread here just to see if that would fix the issue and it still said the same thing, it even did it after factory resets, like something had been tripped and couldnt be reset. Im no stranger to rooting, I've been doing it for years, i just never did it with phone cuz there isn't a whole lot you can do with it. But the new one just updated to 4.4.2 no problem so the issue is fixed. It was all just really strange, i found a thread here from another person getting the same error on a G2 http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg...tware-update-not-available-rooted-device.html

Turbo issues..

I posted this in an older thread but figured I would just go ahead and make a separate post about it.
Ever since I updated the phone to 5.1 it has crashed repeatedly, super laggy, battery life is significantly worse than kitkat, Turbo charge seems to take longer than on kitkat, my texts and calls won't go through, and on a rare occasion my phone will reboot by itself. I've cleared the cache regularly and have factory reset a couple of times and the problems will go away for about a week, but only to return again. I'm going to Verizon tomorrow to see if they can do anything.
Anybody else have these issues with their Turbo?
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Forums
I'm not experiencing any of this. Have you troubleshot apps that you have downloaded as possible culprits? Also, did you upgrade via OTA or did you manually flash the 5.1 update via rootjunky? I've heard multiple people having issues with the flashed one.
Maybe it's one of the apps you have installed. Try a FDR and install your apps a few at a times. Try to pinpoint which app is constantly taxing your phone. If all else fails make verizon give you another 4.4.4 Turbo
So I went to Verizon yesterday and they couldn't do anything for me. I just took the OTA that came out yesterday and I am hoping it fixes more than the stage fright exploit. If not I guess I will be migrating back down to my old Galaxy S4.

If you haven't already, try using the Verizon Upgrade Assistant (that annoying thing that pops up every time you plug your phone into a computer) and select repair. This will do the cleanest wipe possible, reflash everything and bring you up the the latest firmware version. If you still have problems after that, chances are you're using an app that lollipop doesn't like, or you have a physically defective unit.
I ended up with what I think was a physically defective unit, and I got a warranty replacement straight from Motorola. The process was painless, and as long as the phone doesn't have any physical damage and was never exposed to water (in most modern phones, there's a water-sensitive sticker on the inside that changes color when exposed to water, so they can tell if you're lying), you basically just have to ask for it.
In fact, forget what I said in my first paragraph. Just get the Motorola replacement.
https://motorola-global-portal.cust...sion/L3RpbWUvMTQ0NDMzNDc3Mi9zaWQvWDgyS2RzeW0=
OK guys quick update I sucked it up and got the Motorola replacement and it works perfectly now, turns out I had a factory fault or something
My phone isn't laggy, but my Turbo charging is definitely slower, my WiFi is hit or miss at times, and the battery does seem to drain a bit faster but isn't too awful.

What's wrong with my Note 4? Slowdowns galore and freezing

DOK2 all stock firmware here.
Got my phone back in december. My phone has been chugging alone fine until yesterday. not sure what happened but the lock screen takes minutes to come back. I tried doing a factory reset via software and when I did that the phone was still sluggish. Tried a stock recovery reset, and afterwards when i tried signing into my account and connecting to wifi at the initial setup the phone just rebooted back to the start screen again which i thought was real odd. It's currently restoring apps from the app store right now and it intermittently reboots itself while doing stuff. all while it's completely stuttering if i try to use it...
Is my phone starting to have internal memory failure? no SD card in the phone at the moment.
Should I try reflashing the DOK2 firmware via odin and then doing a reset again? Is that even possible with all the restrictions?
used it for about 30 minutes on my way to work and then it rebooted on me with the following error :
ddi: mmc_read failed
Check this thread for a workaround. I use an app to keep my phone from going into deep sleep.

Wouldn't hurt to reflash stock. Google usually restores apps when you check box at first boot for backup and restore. I'm wondering if you installed an app that doesn't agree with your phone... if so, you may continue seeing this issue so long as app is installed.

Did a factory reset and cleared cache, reflashed stock DOK2 from sammobile website using odin, cleared cache. things were going a little bit better at first but now just stuttering all over the place and randomly rebooting still. I only have very few apps downloaded, including facebook updates, instagram, all the samsung and google crap that forces updates...
Also want to add that booting into recovery takes a very long time, longer than i've ever noticed it taking... 7 min+ sometimes it will say "installing system updates" with the android guy chugging along, other times it will just have the android guy chugging....
Is there anything else I can try? Is there something I can test to verify that it's a hardware issue and not a software problem, like a flash memory checker?
This phone is out of warranty, and knox has been tripped so I have very limited options here. Would the Tmobile store let me do an exchange for a fee?

Sprint user here. I thought it might be a carrier issue, but it would seem It's at least Tmo & Sprint
Can't seem to find any complaints on the Verizon/ATT forums but that doesn't mean it isn't happening.
Could it be Touchwhiz?
