I'm looking at picking up a Google store nexus 6 tomorrow. And I'm wondering if there is a hotspot hack. I have unlimited data on Metro pcs and want to use the hotspot off that data. Is it possible or is there a Rom maybe with it built in?
Sent from my SM-N915V using Tapatalk
Don't think you need a hack, especially if you have unlimited data. Wifi-Tethering is built in to the OS:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/11/17/how-to-use-the-nexus-6-as-a-wifi-hotspot/
I'm sure there are posts here about it too, this was just the first one that came up with a google search.
right, you can have unlimited data, but tethering is usually charged for, extra. on tmobile, unlimited high speed data customers get 5gb tethering, while tmobile limited customers get unlimited tethering included. but, for when 5gb isnt enough tethering for me per month(im a tmo unlimited customer), then there is a hack that i can use for tethering and tmobile not finding out about it. its fairy easy to find on xda, with a search. but it does exist
you will need root to be able to do it.
I have unlimited lte 6gb of hotspot. When I was on tmobile it was.$70 with 3gb of hotspot. But my s4 had a Rom on it that used your unlimited lte data for hotspot instead of the actual hotspot data.

nexus roms have source that they can use, no hacking needed. so most roms are based on that source. some are also based on cm source and stock btw. anyways, that would need to get hacked into the rom, and i don't think that many are interested in that, the actual hacking.
As long as I'm able to use the hotspot that's all I care about lol

it differs month to month.. sometimes i use less than 5gb, so i dont need to use the hack. and sometimes i can use 25-30gb, which i will use the hack. a few years ago, i used my whole home internet by tethering. but tmobile put a stop to that. then i probably used 100gb+
Nice, on my old s4 I was getting over 300 a month lol. Didn't have cable or internet so I used it for everything. Xbox, two tablets, laptop etc lol

Data isn't a finite resource and I wish everyone didn't do this anymore and feed into the carriers or isps, the correct term is bandwidth hog, but even that term is very loosely used, they paid for access to the network in an unlimited quantity, so I see nothing wrong with them using what they paid for, do I think 200gb on a mobile connection is excessive, absolutely, get a home Internet connection, but am I mad that they're putting their unlimited plan to use, not at all.

I've just realised I've used 17526.3MB this month, which is more than 1 gig a day. My last plan was 1 gig a month, so that's some increase.
After realising how much I've used I wonder if I can keep it up (1 gig a day). So by the end of the month I hope to have at least 31 gig.

Means nothing. That's probably a picture from one of the guys on the Development forum.
A few modifications will allow you to see the other networks...the phone supports a few of the frequencies in Verizon, but the network will never allow your device and you would never have full functionality anyway.

Um yeah, I can see Verizon's AWS LTE network on my Xperia ZL around San Diego sometimes. It's not very widespread, and without band 13 it won't be very useful. None of those shots show the phone connected to the LTE network though.
The Nexus 5 has the Qualcomm WTR1605L, which does have support for LTE band 13 700mhz (Verizon), it appears to just be turned off in the N5. Is there a possibility of waking this part of the chip and using the phone on Verizon by just throwing in a SIM card?
I just saw which chip it had and researched to discover that it does have support for band 13, which is verizon.
Is there a simple explanation why this isn't possible, other and having to figure out a solution for ESN/IMEI?
Cheers

I didn't mean it would be slow...I meant it wouldn't work well.
Some towers might work great, but others wouldn't work at all. In the end, you'd have like 1/4 of the coverage of normal, since the bands that are accessible by the radio in the N5 aren't used heavily by Verizon (the LTE bands, at least).
But only the internet would we funky. Voice would work

Voice wouldn't work, if anything it would be the other way around. From what I know the Nexus 5 supports a few (maybe only one) LTE band of VZW and you need their CDMA network (and your phone activated on said network) to make calls.
Wouldn't nexus 5 CDMA bands work if registered...

I don't have Verizon and they can eat a bag of dicks for all I care because of the crap that they've done. But for the past week, I have been thinking about how the Nexus 4 had it's LTE disabled and how a patch enabled it.
What if the Nexus 5 could be patched to enable Verizon. Maybe borrow something like a Verizon G2 radio driver or something?
Being a ham radio operator, I have always liked to mod things. Flash patched bioses on computers to enable things like raid or slic mod so Windows activates easy after a format/reinstall.
Has anyone else thought about a mod like this?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using the Power of the Force
Sprint and Verizon use identical CDMA technology. If fact, they both have roaming agreement to be able to use each other's towers. The problem would be Verizon's CDMA database. They just won't allow the IMEI unless you can spoof it with another Verizon number that's been activated.
LTE on the other hand should work just fine for data as long as you have Verizon's AWS around since there us no amplifier for the 700 MHz in the N5.
Ok guys thought i would make a speedtest thread for our device please include which carrier your on lets get this party started. Ok im on sprint just ran these test im very impressed by sprint especially in my area.

From what I heard from a rep yesterday. They are going to start throttling more so people will switch from unlimited to a shared data plan.

I gotta say that switching from Sprint to T-Mobile in the burbs of Chicago was the best move I've ever made in my many years of cell phone ownership..I have had every carrier, more than once, and even though some were good with their cellular service, NONE of them ever delivered anywhere near their "up to" download data speed....Until I found T-mobile!
In my house, where I usually got 3-8 meg download speeds on lte from Verizon, ATT, and Sprint, I am regularly getting 30- 40 megs download speed from T-Mobile; uploads from the others were in the 1-3 meg range, with T-mobile they have been 7-11 megs!
Plus, the clearest phone call quality I have had since phones went from Analog to Digital many years ago..
I know this probably wont last, as thousands of users are dumping Verizon/Sprint/ATT for T-mobiles new plans and programs over the last month or 2, but, hey, I am enjoying it while its here!
Plus I have called their Customer Service department a couple of times in the last 2 days, and they have been so nice and pleasant, I didnt want to get off the phone with them..
Hopefully, they force the "other" cellular companies to stop treating us like dirt, and treat us like the people that sign their paychecks....Hey, AREN'T we those people anyways????
Columbus, Ohio. After 14 years with Sprint I tried T-Mobile 6 months ago. I'm impressed with how well T-Mobile has improved in my area. Go Bucks!

The low uploads are probably going to be standard on Band 41 because it's TDD-LTE which inherently allows the network to distribute more bandwidth to the download side. High uploads aren't really necessary since a disproportionate amount of the usage is download and TDD LTE allows them to boost their download speeds using less spectrum proportionally to the other carriers by sacrificing upload.

I found a tethering work around solution!
This has only been tested on stock Verizon Kit Kat leak. I stumbled upon it by accident... by desperately trying everything i could think of to get tethering working.
Step 1. Follow the directions in this op exactly - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2456338
Step 2. Open the mobile hotspot app and enable. You will have the message saying provision has force closed. The on/off toggle will then be greyed out.
Step 3. Click on configure below the on/off toggle. Change either the password or the network name. Press save.
Step 4. The app will re associate with the provision automatically and tethering will enable! The on/off toggle will be lit up blue.
I have confirmed it works by connecting devices to the tether network and opening webpages. The only catch is every time you want to enable the tether again you have to repeat steps 2 thru 4. Change something in the tether settings AFTER enabling and provisioning fc's.... the tether will enable every time.
Rock on!

Did you delete the hotspot apk? The provisioning apk and odex file should be deleted but the actual mobile hotspot apk should remain untouched. Also make sure you set the proper permissions on the new provisioning apk before rebooting after you stick it in the system app folder.

But has anyone thought of using an apk with root perms to moves the files and then set perms? Then reboot. I used to do that with certain mods on my OG with camera mods etc.

I am able to connect my laptop via wifi as well. I did nothing different, just enabled hotspot as usual...
Did you get AT&T little mobile hotspot message?

No, just go into the navigation panel and hit hot spot like all Android devices. Hotspot isn't disabled like it was the the SGS3.

Most of the AT&T share plans include tethering when in the past tethering was only for certain plans or extra. So maybe it depends on the data plan? If your plan includes it, you shouldn't even need Foxfi.
I have an unlimited data plan that I have had for the past 5 years.

WiFi tether not working for me

I figured it out. Under developer options change system info to ART and you can turn on the tether/hotspot on with FoxFi.

I am using Dalvik and Foxfi works fine.
I am wondering if it has something to do with the unlimited data plan I have.

wifi tethering works fine for me. i disabled every single at&t app as well as the mobile hotspot app. the native wifi tethering from the settings menu then worked fine for me. im on an old 3GB LTE data plan as well.
Well, I got it to work for about one minute before it got disabled by that damn ATT mobile hotspot in settings. How did you disable it? I tried and it won't let me.

when you are in the app launcher, hit settings, uninstall/disable apps, then choose all the at&t apps. they wont uninstall, but they will be disabled. seems to work fine for me?
I did that and am still having issues with it. I can get it to work for about 20 seconds after restarting it.

Wifi Thether
Hey any further updates on this ? I just have got S5 but haven't activated it yet because wifi tethering I am using on my S4 is essential for me. Did anyone find a workaround yet ? Thanks
