I have searched in every area but can't seem to find how to revert a setting.
There are many types of files in an application and Android Studio can open most of them, but occasionally it asks you what app you want to use to open a file. In this case I wanted to preview a font file and AS offered to open it as a text file. I figured what the heck give it a try. Of course it just displays hieroglyphics.
So the question is HOW to change the application font files (or any file for that matter) is opened with?
Thanks
Have you tried the Default Programs settings? I believe they're in the Control Panel.

I recently upgraded my Acrobat Reader without uninstalling the former version. Everything worked fine. Then I uninstalled the old version and it seems to have taken the file association for PDFs along with it. While looking for a solution, I found a lot of complicated schemes to modify the registry (no thanks), install a tweak program and do it from there (better, but why complicate things), etc. But it was actually quite simple. So for anyone who's in a similar predicament...
Here's how to set a file association in WM 6.1:
1. Open File Explorer and find a file of the type you want to associate to an app.
2. Hold down the stylus on the file name for a couple seconds (til you get the context menu) and choose "Open with program..."
3. Choose a program from the list on the top part of the resulting window, then check the box labeled "Associate selected Program with this file type."
4. Hit Open.
5. You may get a message to overwrite current association if there was a previous app associated with the file type, chances are you'll want to go ahead and overwrite so it will remember the association you prefer.
You're done!
This works great if you want to open some multimedia files with one program and others with a different program. For instance, I couldn't get Media Player to open my .AVI files, but it was the default association, now I set .AVIs to TCPMP and all is working great! ( I know TCPMP is one of the few programs that lets you set the association, this is just an example - and it was actually easier doing it as described above!)
That menu option's not there
I've got 6.1, but "open with program" is not a choice that pops up. I looked under properties, and it's not there either. Are you using a 3rd party file explorer?
You need File Explorer Extension, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421723&highlight=file+explorer
Nice!
Thanks for the tip!
I have a several different media players, and this is just what I needed to choose which program opens what file type.
Thanks again!
Thanks guys, really good software that complement very well the unfinished software of Microsoft..
Great for removing the "DocsToGo" association!
I was really getting sick of being unable to open email attachments because I didn't choose to shell out for the DocsToGo bloatware on my AT&T Fuze. Great fix!
Thanks!!!!

Thanks for the software but there is a problem
The file explorer is amazing. But I am facing a problem. I have an HTC Touch 3G running windows mobile 6.1. When I use this file explorer to change the file association, it successfully changes. However, the icon of the program it is associated with doesn't appear on the left of the file name. Only the windows icon appears to the left of the file name. However whenever I click on the file, it does open with the required software/player. But because the icon of the file type it is associated with does not display, it becomes slightly confusing for me to make out with which software will it open.
Thanking you in anticipation for the help!!
thanks a lot
FExplorer ext is a gr8 tool. It solved my file association problem for .jpg files.
Thank a lot again.
I tried to install FEE on my WM6.1 smartphone (non touchscreen) but it gives an error and won't install saying it's not designed for my device.
Has anyone found a way to install it, or found a similar free product to change file extensions?

Schap's Advanced Config can also change file associations, as can Total Commander.

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.
There's any way to Vito SMS chat instead default WM app for SMS managemment ?
Thank you
very very thnx to you
still not the correct icons ?
same as @sahilhshah.
Changing the file associations in either described way is working fine. But the icons are still the windows system icons.
Interestingly viewing the icons from the files which are not corrected to the specific program icon, in the taskmanager, I can see the right icons.
Any ideas?
Using Total Commander for Pocket PC u can change file association and file icon as well, it will be coresponding to specified program. Just give it a try
(That's my firsth post on this great forum )
Hi people.
Could you help me? I tried to change the file association, as explained, but my phone isn't touch screen (is a Samsung Jack) and the File Explorer Extension doesn't work.
Someone know a way for change the file association on Win 6.1?

You can change the name and the file associations using Total Commander ( for Smartphone )
Hey guys. Well, I have the HTC Fuze (aka Touch Pro) and I love to use the slide-out keyboard. Well, using it with the latest HTC Youtube Application (v1.6.1820.4128), I found that the orientation did not switch and that a thin white rectangle would appear on the screen to show me what I typed. I think that those of us with this agree that it looks ugly.
I did a bit of tinkering and found that the Youtube.exe in the latest version does not orient Search to landscape properly on the Touch Pro. The only version that seems to do this properly is the one from the Diamond. To get the benefits of both worlds (latest Youtube and working landscape Search) all we need is the Youtube.exe from the previous version. No need to change any other files or add/delete registry entries.
Needed File: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E8OM7PD4
Solution:
1. Go to your device's Windows folder and backup the original Youtube.exe.
2. Replace the original exe with the one you downloaded. Use TotalCommander or any other program that lets you edit system files. Overwrite if prompted. If you are unable to replace the file, soft reset your device and try again.
Now enjoy!
The only disadvantage of the Youtube.exe from the older version is that the Program Guide will not appear if you do not have any custom favorites/channels added. If you do add a custom favorite/channel, the Program Guide will appear like it did in the original HTC Youtube, but the Auto &Vehicles channel will give the error "No Videos Found". Anything you add will start at #13 and count up (14, 15 ,16, ...).
Program Guide Style Editing (If you do not want the default channels)
1. Use your favorite Registry Editor and navigate to
HKLM\Software\HTC\Youtube
2. Now inside this, find the ProgramGuideStyle key and change its value from 1 to 0. Hexadecimal or Decimal doesn't matter since 0 is the same in both number systems.
Now you will have a Program Guide whose only default channel will be "All Videos" and anything you add will start at 2 and count up (3,4,5, ...).

The above file was uploaded from a virus/spyware free system. However, I cannot guarantee that you will download a virus/spyware free file, so PLEASE SCAN THE FILE AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD to make sure it is virus/spyware free.
Hope this helps!
This is great!! That bug has been annoying the heck out of me for God knows how long!!
Hello all,
I've done countless searches, but can't teach myself how to set file associations on my G1.
I have Text Edit and ASTRO installed and would like to be able to put a shortcut to a text document on my home screen that would automatically open with Text Edit. Right now that ASTRO-built shortcut comes back with an option to open it using File Viewer or HTMLViewer, neither of which allows editing.
There is no provision in Text Edit to register itself as the default text app.
Also, if I put a shortcut to an .XLS file on my desktop, ASTRO intercepts it and says "No activity is available to display this file type." However, if I put a shortcut to a .DOC file, it opens happily with the installed DocsToGo app. It seems the .DOC filetype was registered by DocsToGo but the .XLS is disconnected somehow. My fault or theirs?
(I know I can create a DocsToGo Recently Used folder on my home screen, but I want to skip that step of opening another folder...)
How can I set these associations so they will open with the app I want? I'd be happy if the O/S intercepted it and at least gave me a choice instead of dumping it back with "No activity..."
I've dug a little into the ASTRO File Types screen, but it's not very intuitive...
Thanks.
It may be astro thats causing the problems. try another file browser such as estrongs file explorer

OK, I've uninstalled ASTRO and have installed ES File Explorer and can now launch .XLS files just by clicking on them so it seems ASTRO didn't know what to do but ES does.
It seems ES even has a built-in text editor so perhaps I can do away with the Text Editor app also.
The problem I have now is putting a shortcut to my document/spreadsheet on my home screen; ASTRO allowed this but is now gone.
How does Android store the file heirarchy for system folders like this? I understand C:/Users/Dave/Desktop et al, but can't find a way to paste a link/shortcut on my G1.
Ideas?
Hi there,
i searched the forum for a while now for a problem that every now and then pops up for me after reflashing. I'm searching for an automatic way to assign my own thumbnail graphics on the sense internet tab.
I use the manual way sometimes after flashing, but it is not satisfying me, because it takes lot of time to copy the files, rename my original files to the newly created ones and copy them back. So most of the time i don't use the icons...
Yes, i know that the pics have to be 512x512px PNG Files, and i also know that they are stored under Windows\Thumbnails .
I'm searching for where the information for the lookup of these pics (for example {2B1EE4E4-651F-D4DC-708B-DB1319CA381E}.png) is stored. I neither found it in the registry, nor in the filesystem as plain text. I copied the whole file system to my pc and did a in-file-search.
For me there are now to last possibilities where to find them:
Theyre stored as hex values in registry or in filesystem, so that a normal textsearch is useless or
theyre stored in a database file.
If someone has an idea which file it is or if theres another possibility i would be glad to hear it. It makes me crazy that we can change EVERYTHING on our wm-devices since years, but something like the bookmark icons (whch is significant for me) is so hard to find
best regards, Puckmeister
Are you looking for "Custom icons" or just a snapshot of the webpage? I know that if you save the favorite in opera 9/10 and open the favorite from inside opera (from the favorites menu) you will then see the screenshot of said favorite in sense.
(I'm posting this in the Questions Forum because i have not enough posts to either create a topic in the Development and Hacking Forum or reply to the registry hacks-thread.
But since it's also somehow a question I hope it's ok in here.)

Edit October 15th, 2013: With the GDR3-Update you get this feature built-in, so no more need to do this then!
Hi Folks,
while AlvinPhilemon found out a registry tweak to set custom sounds on the Samsung Ativ S (as explained in this post), it is not quite practical, since you can't see the sound in the list with the others, so you can't choose or switch them without always edit the registry.
I found another way to do this, and I think it's a bit more elegant (see attachment to have a look), although it only can change the sms, e-mail or mailbox sounds.
This is what you need:
1. Interop Unlock
2. Registry Editor (use SamWP8 Tools)
3. Full File System Access (use SamWP8 Tools)
4. Your Notification sound (I tried mp3-, wav- and wma-format, all worked)
This is how you do it:
1. On your PC, browse to your Phone\PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\ and paste your new sound there.
2. To make it visible in your sounds selection list inside the Settings-app you have to create a registry entry: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\OEM\Sounds\Notifications\ (This is the Samsung specific location for notifications; I tried the whole thing with the standard Microsoft sound location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Sounds\Notifications\ but it didn't work). In this registry location you can see a list of the the existing Samsung notification sounds ("Knock.wma", "On time.wma" and "Whistle.wma") and how their name is displayed in the Settings-app ("Knock", "On time" and "Whistle").
3. Create a new key and set the Value to the name of your soundfile (for example "Silvestro.mp3"), the Type to String and the Data to the name how you want it to be displayed. There might be an error notification after writing, but just read the key to check you wrote it correctly.
4. Done! Go to the Settings-app and choose the newly created sound as message, mailbox, or e-mail-sound!
What do you think of this solution? Of course it would be nice to pack this feature in an app that first lets you choose a soundfile from the Public or SD-Folder, then copies it, then creates a registry entry and then also is able to delete those things an put everything back to normal, but since I'm just starting with C# there's no way I can do this myself. Anybody interested in trying?
Thanks for your comments!
Very nice work, and good tutorial. It would, indeed, be good to get an app to automate this. You would need ID_CAP_SOUND_CONTROL (may require full capability unlock); this capability should enable both the requisite file system and registry access.
It's a shame that is not available by default like on every other smart and dumb phone in the world. This is one of WP many short comings that MS refuses to address.
Thanks
Nice tuturial, thanks.
I am a satisfied galaxy s4 owner. Before this phone i had the htc 8x. I liked wp8 a lot, but unfortunally some essential apps (for me) where still missing. Beside the very good os, i also like all the default sounds. Thats where my question comes in.
I'm looking for the complete set of Windows phone 8 notification sounds. Is it possible to copy them from a wp8 phone and post them here? I would like to have the windows sounds in my galaxy.
Great news!
With the GDR3-update comes the feature to set custom sounds for Messages/Mailbox/Reminder!
So this is no longer needed...
more easy way
I just renamed my ringtone the same as the existing tone in the map \PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\.
Then I renamed the original sound (I have put "old" in front of the original tekst.)
Now I copied the rington in the map \PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds\.
Choose the ringtone on your phone, and it plays your ringtone.
I converted the mp3 ringtone to wma. I didn't try if it plays mp3.
The name of the original ringtones doesn't match the name in the phone, but you can play them first on your pc, to see witch one to replace.
