I've had this problem for a while but haven't really worried about it until I now want to do a full reset and backup some stuff to the PC.
I am running VZW Developer Edition 4.4.4. rooted.
I have tried multiple PCs and many techniques related to driver loading but nothing I do is able to get my phone to show up in Windows Explorer.
As said I have tried everything I could find online but please don't assume anything, just post your suggestions
Howdy,
It'd help us quite a bit if you'd let us know the following:
-Mac/PC?
-Version of MacOS/Windows/Linux
-Have you tried different cables?
-Do any icons show up on your phone? For example the KitKat icon that appears in the upper left hand of the phone screen
The issue I've run into several times is that Windows auto updates some drivers. Search out KidJoe on the forums as he has a great resource page with links to the Moto drivers you'll need for the best experience.
Kind of easy to answer
Macs and PCs - Win7 and WIn8
Lots of different cables and USB ports
Sometimes I can get the USB debugging thing to show up but not often and not currently on any of the 3 PCs I am using
I'll look for KidJoe.

/sarcasm mode on / do you think this will work because try 75 with the drivers will be the lucky one ? /sarcasm mode off/
I wrote REinstal ) I mean, clean off and install again. That's a bit another sort of carrot )
P.S. Sorry, I wasn't too polite. Please, reinstall.
Done that many times also. Thanks for trying to help though I've used a number of different computers, including ones that have never had these drivers on.
It's possibly microUSB socket issue

ok so this has been happening for a while and im finally tired of it...
I plug in my cdma hero fully rooted running CM 6 with the stock usb plug into my computer and neither my phone nor my computer recognize it. all the phone does is start charging. ive tried all the other ports and changing the default action on the phone to mount sd and all that but nothing has worked. its becoming a pain in the ..... yeah.... can anyone help me out?
edit: i have also tried many other known to be working usb cables
Try a new usb cable.

i have also tried many new usb cables... sorry i forgot to mention that.
Can you try a different computer? Trying to identify if it's a computer problem or a phone problem.
i dotn really have the option of using another computer... i think it is the computer but i am not sure.
Plug another device into the computer. 1 that is known to work. If that does not work you will need to uninstall your usb drivers and reinstall them with no devices attached.
For more information google hardware manager usb.
If this doesn't solve your issue it would either b a virus or hardware failure. If your phone charges fine I seriously doubt it is your phone that is the problem.
I almost forgot. The android usb drivers have been updated since the last release of windows. I would look into this as well.

Make sure you have compatible and up-to-date USB Drivers. Another thing, make sure you have HTC Sync installed.
Check the permissions on the computer with USB Ports.
The phone might be bad. I had this problem and Sprint replaced the phone
Same problem here... my wife's hero is recognized with same USB cable and same computer ... but mine wont recognize ... it started doing this after I flashed to a sense rom to update prl ... could that have screwed it up?

You need to go to the 'device tree' in device manager this is the default and only view on windows xp. You are looking for usb root port or .... well hold on ill find it. Im assuming vista here?
It doesn't say it in the article but from my experience sometimes it can be selective about which devices it will allow to connect.
Unplug your device now.
Removing the drivers and re-installing them erases all the current configurations. Yes your computer remembers everything you have ever plugged into those ports until this point ↓
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900
I hope you remember to google for the latest android usb driver before you plug it back in!
If you didn't just go through the steps again at the microsoft site. Reopen the new drivers From android project Then plug your device in. Keep me posted.
Oh and you cant 'Revert your phone to stock' unless you made a backup of the stock rom before you flashed it. Well you could also have another copy of the same phone lying around... And even then when they send the device to hardware quality labs they're forensic equipment will tell that the locks have been snapped. Your phone might come back with a bill.
↑ Things of this nature are usually against customer service policies but in today's economy nothing would surprise me.
I hope you're not panicking! If you couldn't tell I have run into this problem more than once over the years, so the odds that your phone is jacked up are slim to none £

you can always just download the stock rom from sprint for and update cant u? at this point i might as well insure it then have it get "stolen" just to get a new phone.
Lol. No comment ;D

You can always try the android drivers in my post on how to install adb. Its in the hero dev section. I made that thread because some users were having trouble installing the htc drivers. As usual I'm mobile so I can't link you but you should find it no problem. Hope it helps good luck

Yes you can revert your phone to stock, don't worry. Just download the RUU from Sprint or HTC's website and run it with your phone plugged in. If you ever can get it to recognize it anyway, lol.
I've literally searched high and low for over 2 weeks trying to resolve this issue before bothering you with it.. I'm trying to flash this phone over to Cricket. Ive installed Android SDK and JDK, HW Virtual Serial,Debugging on. The problem I have is, when I just power on the phone it has no issues being recognized as a storage device. Its when I either press "T" and power it on the issues begin.. the Motorola composite device could not be installed. Or when I try to use HW serial it tells me Motorola USB networking device wasnt installed correctly. Ive downloaded two different drivers with no prevail. Im running XP 32bit. When I go to device manager I see the :ADB Composite device (Has no Drop down properties) with the sub folder Motorola A855 with an exclamation next to it.. I did a couple of manual updates(two official drivers from Motorola site) directing the update to the folder containing the driver. Even tried the edit .inf file I read about on another forum with no prevail. RSD Lite connects with no problem. Its the Networking driver and A855 driver that wont install in PC/Diag mode. My head is about to litterally explode dude.. Im irritated for spending $160 on it and stuck for 2 weeks now, my wife upset I wont give up and spending too much time trying.. PLEASE HELP! PLEASE! If not this phone is for sale! LOL! Mint condition.
What type of phone?
Also I've ran into driver issues, and its always been the computers fault every time. You may have conflicting drivers, or it may even be something as simple as a bad USB port.
When its problems like this, that just should normally work, its usually some stupid crap.
For instance, I was using a usb exension to connect my droid to the pc, and for somereason it was problematic, but when I connect directly it works.
I know these aren't the technical solutions u are loking for, but eliminate all the variables u can before moving on or giving up.
Check all cords, ports, etc; remove all drivers, uninstall all motorolla software. Uninstall anything phone related on your comp and try again.

Got the same problem
hHey guys, I have the same trouble. I need an answer too. Help!
So I just updated my Bionic to ICS, YAY!
But, root isn't working, BOO! :crying:
I am relatively knowledgeable in this stuff; it is both my profession and my hobby. Investigating this issue has led me to believe that my problem is that the ADB interface does not show up in device manager (Mass Storage, MTP, and PTP mode have the same result) on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. When the device is connected in AP fastboot, however, the driver does show up and works fine. Additionally, when I try to manually add the driver, it fails to start (code 10).
What does show up, however, is the Motorola USB Networking Driver (MTP only), under network adapters.
The upgrade to ICS was performed with SamuriHL's HoB (ADB), and in an effort to resolve this issue, I did it again with HoB (Fastboot).
Can somebody please help?
Thanks,
Overkill
EDIT: I downloaded the SDK and ADB still doesn't list my device. I do know that the IP used by the Motorola driver is 192.168.137.2 for my device (.1 for my PC) and that "adb connect 192.168.137.2" fails to connect on the default port (maybe another port?)
Thanks again! I feel naked and powerless without my root =(
Do you have USB debugging enabled under Developer Options?
Yes, I do. I have tried disabling/re-enabling it as well to no avail.
I appreciate the KISS approach, but I've gone over the checklist on every how-to and I am confident that nothing is missing.
I tried the phone on another computer and with several different USB cables and no luck. I have all 64-bit machines, but I can also try my XP VM and maybe that'll behave properly ^_^ Or an actual XP machine at one of my jobsites that still won't pay to upgrade their equipment from 2002.

I had this problem, reinstalling latest Motorola device manager fixed it for me.
No go on that either.
I gave up and did a factory restore, it's working fine now. Going to analyze the scripts used by House of Bionic and see if it's possible to work backwards and see if there was a way to do it without losing data, for posterity's sake.

You have to remember to reboot with the phone in all the different connection modes for multiple different drivers loaded.

Weird. FDR only kills user settigns and user apps - so, it seems like there was an app that was blocking ADB access. Which is extremely strange, b/c that should not happen, unless you have some sort of firewall on the BIONIC itself (or else something like DroidSheppGuard running).

Not always true - you may need to reboot the phone. I can switch from any mode to any other mode and the connection pops up within 5 seconds every time. Of course, I'm running Win 7 Ult x64, and I only use the direct connect ports on my computer, no hubs, no USB 3 ports, and I never install the Motorola Device Manager software, only the direct USB drivers that I extract from the installer myself. Any one of those may be a factor in why it works for me, or some combination thereof.
However, I do know that I am not the only one for whom the switching works without rebooting either computer or phone....
First off i want to say hi to everyone and thank everyone for even looking at this thread. I've found some great stuff on this web site but so far nothing has worked for me so i figured i would put up a thread and see what i get back . First off i have an HTC one m7 from sprint. What im trying to do is unlock bootloader root it and sim unlock it. But im am stuck on the first step of my plan. Connecting the HTC one to the computer lol. Htc one has android 4.4.2 running htc sense 5.5. When i plug it in to the computer sometimes i wont get nothing like no noise saying that its plugged in and trying to get drivers. Other times if im lucky i look on my computer and it shows up as a cd drive but when i click on it i get nothing it says insert disc. These is what i have tried so far: htc driver 4.01.001, htc_bmp usb driver x64 1.0.5375, about five usb cables even an actual htc one cable. tried to connect it with other computers, htc sync, different usb port. I think thats everything lol. Oh and also on my ubuntu laptop but it doesn't show up. At this point im pretty disappointing at the device and kinda want to break it lol. I tried using weaksauce to see if it would work for me and it doesn't just crashes. I've seen some great stuff on these forums and i was hoping i could get a hand. I'm on a windows 7 64bit computer.

When i go to device manager nothing shows up with exclamation mark. Yeah it shows usb connected it charges the phone. Sometimes i also get a notification on the phone saying that if the htc sync manager doesn't show up to get it off the website which i have done before with no result.
This may sound crazy, but have you tried using a different USB cable? They tend to get damaged over time, especially at the ends.
Also, what does the windows Device Manager say you've plugged in?

Uninstall everything HTC.
Reboot PC.
Install these drivers
Plug phone in and let the drivers install (drivers will install while booted to OS,recovery, and fastboot)
Still not recognized? (If you are using Windows 8.1 this will most likely not work, unless you hboot is 1.55 or 1.56)
On your PC go to device manager and find your phone(usually M7WLS), right click and select properties
Select the driver tab
Select update driver
Select browse my comp
Let me pick
Look for ADB USB device or similar should be one of the first couple choices
Select MyHTC install and you should be good
After i installed the drivers when i go to device manager the phone is not listed on there. The only evidence that i have when i plug the phone is on the computer it shows up as a cd drive but it doesn't let me edit the driver for it.

Just figured I'd chime in for anyone like me who also runs into this thread(I realize it's a few months old now)...
Was having the same exact issue with my HTC One m7...Plugged the phone in tons of times over the year I had it, never once had a issue...all of a sudden one day I get this USB not recognized(if Im lucky usually nothing happens)...So I plug in my other M7 ..it shows up instantly...tried everything as well....Finally got a brand new port put in.....STILL nothing....talk about frustrating...this was a month ago...
Just got a Max m7. ...nothing same USB not recognized...same phone charges fine but nothing registers on the phone as being plugged in. I gotta wonder if this is a 4.4.2 issue?? Any ideas anyone , any solutions (btw all of these previously mentioned phones are bone stock, never rooted, unlocked, or anything...I tried hard reset on both, cleaned the ports , installed brand new port on one, still nothing. Something ain't right here.

Yes, definitely... I have around 15 usb cables, half oem Samsung, the other half oem HTC, and a Blackberry cable...I have been flashing phones to Boost Mobile for the past five years (which is why I keep so many cables) because often for some odd reason cables , for no apparent reason, will work fine on one phone & not the other. Also, that's why I'm confident in saying that based off my experience with so many HTC devices, and never having this issue with any other device except for the HTC One..
That it appears to me to be a issue with Sense 5.5 - 6 4.4.2 HTC android versions. I never had this problem till I started seeing phones doing it that all had that in common(including one of my own m7's that I got when it first came out, hooked it up to a pc countless times(managing the memory ) over the first year I had it...Never had a issue connecting to the pc.Once it was updated to Sense 6 the problem started. Now I'm not saying it happens w/ every device , my other M7 is running 6 and connects just fine...but the other day I got a m7 Max, doing the samething, and running 6...
Of course , I guess it could just be some coincidence... but my educated guess is that it's some error in the Sense 6 that can occur randomly.
Hey folks,
So I have a completely unmodified, stock Canadian N920W8 on 6.0.1, and no matter what I do, I cant get it to be recognized by Odin on my Win10 or Heimdall on my Mac.
I've done everything I could think of. Different cables, different ports, even different computers. Reinstalled the USB drivers, everything.
Anyone have any ideas? My phone won't fast charge, and is lagging more and more. I can't even Odin back to stock because it won't recognize. Factory Reset just cleaned out everything but nothing has changed. OEM unlock and USB debugging on, it won't be seen by the computers.
Any help? It's past manufacturer warranty, but it's still a good phone and I don't wanna lose it.

Did you install the actual drivers or just the ones that Windows installs? I use the ones that Samsung smart switch installs and I have no issues. If it is not fast charging and your computer does not recognize the phone it may not matter what drivers you use.
I used the Samsung USB drivers for Mobile Phones from Canadian support page. And that's on a fairly fresh win 10 install, too.

Unfortunately not. I was hoping smart switch would see it. I would not rule out a damaged USB port.
I hope not... this is way past warranty, and I wanted to flash the thing with Khongloi's new Nougat rom... if it won't be recognized, then I can't even back it up or re-flash it to stock. Which is not a good thing...

Just to be sure. Can you transfer files from your PC to your phone and vice versa? Do you have any USB 3.0 ports? My phone seems to work better on 3.0 but still works on other types. Do you still have the Samsung cable? I know you said you have tried other cables but I used to have two cables that would not do data.
I tried with a brand new from the box cable, into four different usb 2 ports on the Mac and 2 usb 3 ports on the windows 10 PC.
No luck with it even being recognized for file transfers either.
@ve6ay, I could be wrong but I would say you probably need a new port. You should be able to pick one up relatively cheap. Good luck.
That's my thought, too, and in that case, I'll forgo anything. The contract is up in October, and it got the OTA update to 7.0, so I'm okay with it for now. I'm not into opening up her phone (which hasn't even been rooted yet) to switch out a port that I'm not confident enough to switch out.

Did you try going into Developer Options and then scrolling down until you see "USB Configuration" and setting it to MTP? Or open the dialing pad and enter *#0808# and then making sure it's set to MTP, ADB and then try again.. If that doesn't work then it really is your port connection and it's actually super easy to replace and cheap too! All you'd have to do is heat the back up so you can loosen the glue up and then slowly pry the back off and then remove like 16 screws(lol) and then at the bottom you just unscrew it and easily pull the thin connection out.. I've done it several times so far although trying not to break the back glass is super hard..
The back glass got shattered in a drop last summer. So that will probably be a problem. Like I said, new phone this fall, most likely the next Note series. Though I'm tempted to go with an Exynos variant from across the ocean.
