4.4.2 to 5.0 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hello guys, i've been reading posts all day about this but couldn't find a solution. A friend of mine brought from the US an unlocked S5 from AT&T, he can't update it from the settings menu to lollipop. I found the OTA file which i'm supposed to flash from sd from the recovery menu but when i try to do it, nothing happens. Can someone tell me if i can update from 4.4.2 to 5? Thanks in advance

A lot of people had issues just updating to 4.4.4. I was one of them, it's a process. First try wiping the cache and do a factory reset. It that doesn't work, you need to reflash NCE, then take the OTA updates. BEWARE, if you are interested in Rooting, don't take the lollipop update. 5.0 is unrootable at the moment. If you're not worried about rooting, make sure you do another factory reset and cache wipe after upgrading to lollipop. For some reason it doesn't fully install without it. You will get a slew of bugs, reset fixes a lot of them. Trying to find the original thread I used to do it.

Thanks a lot for your help, i downloaded NCE and tried flashing with ODIN and got an error "Fail (Auth)". Any ideas? :/

[Q] XT1092 in bootloop after update

So this is a bit of a comedy of errors on my part...
I took the OTA update to lollipop and (foolishly) followed the same method as on KK to get root, putting myself in a bootloop. I got myself out of it by clearing the userdata and the cache.
I went about sorting everything and achieved root using the chainfire method, that was fine and I then went about reinstalling the xposed modules I had before. Foolishly, I didn't double check the status of xposed on Lollipop and consequently put myself back in a bootloop (idiot). I redid what had worked earlier, clearing the userdata and the cache to no avail.
Obviously, the problem was not the same as before and I needed to disable xposed, but in clearing the userdata I not only removed the xposed_disable.zip file to do this and also turned off adb so I can't push it.
The bootloader is fine and I can use fastboot, but can't push anything across. I hadn't replaced the recovery but can boot into twrp. However, I cannot flash it because I cannot push it over using adb.
I can't work out exactly how far I need to go back/what exactly I need to flash in order to put this all back together again.
I would be very grateful for any help that people can give on this.
Seems you need a .19 stock system partition image to get rid of the bootloop. Hope somebody can backup his system after OTA and share his image, otherwise you have to wait for official release or take risk to downgrade.
----------------------------
If you can boot from TWRP, you can try put the Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip in an USB SD card(maybe need formatted to particular filesystem like ext4) linked your phone with otg cable, then mount the sdcard and flash the zip file via TWRP.
If you're not worried about going back with a full wipe to KK, you can follow this link here Seeing that you can get your phone into fastboot, it'll work fine.

Thank you! This seems to have solved the problem (whatever exactly it was) and the mobile data is fine which was what I was most unsure about.
I'm curious, my device was a XT1092GB (or at least, I believe it was a GB) and now shows as a 'reteu' where I believe it used to show as 'retgb'. This isn't a problem as it all seems to work, but should I be expecting the Lollipop OTA update to come through? I deliberately didn't follow through on the last part of that thread and install 5.0 that way, I didn't want to tempt fate! However, I would like the update if possible and am unsure which way to go about doing it.
Again, many thanks for all the suggestions everyone. This is why android is awesome
Its a stock EU 4.4.4 so the OTA should come through. Even if it doesn't, I'm sure there's a 5.0 retgb firmware doing the rounds on this forum.

I guess even if the 5.0 OTA doesn't come through (for the reasons as given here, any following OTA updates should be fine, right?
If not, do you reckon then 5.0 rom given in the link you sent would be appropriate or would this be a better route?
Thanks for the help!

AT&T Tab S 8.4 - SM-T707A Lollipop upgrade released

Hey all,
Thought I'd let those of you that have an AT&T Tab S 8.4 know that Lollipop has been released today. Happened to be on the AT&T Software update page here: http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425812&cv=820 and noticed it listed the update.
Manually checked for updates on my tablet, it's downloading now. My 8.4 on AT&T is totally stock.
Downloading now... 1.1GB
manually checking shows nothing for me
Mine wasn't too laggy after the upgrade. But as I know from places like XDA usually a very good idea to do a full system wipe which I did.
What I am most thankful for is there is now an option to remove that Samsung screen that has those Samsung widgets that go full page. Can't recall what it is called. Yeah I know could have got rid of that using a 3rd party launcher in 4.4 but so happy Samsung put option there to disable it finally. To get rid of it, long press blank space like you were going to add a widget, then click Home Screen Settings, then uncheck "Content Home Screen".
Has anyone who rooted with kingroot updated? I'm assuming it'll kill root, just curious if I need to unroot prior, or if the update will still install. I'll post the answer tomorrow after I update.
I've had some Samsung devices which will update while rooted, and some that will not.

Not sure it will work.
Maybe try to adapt the method given by ashyx here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/guide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484
It worked successfully for me on the T800

I'm rooted with Kingroot and it's currently downloading the update. If you load Xposed Framework and Wanam Xposed, under Security hacks there's a setting for Fake System Status that allows you to set it to Original.
I'll follow up when the download finishes.
Update: The download completed but the install failed and then got stuck in a boot loop. Ended up having to go to the Samsung place at Best Buy to have them re-flash KitKat. Now the tab is telling me I have to wait 24 hours to check for updates. I'm sure everything will be good now that I'm back on a factory image.

Turn off automatic date and time and manually advance it by a day, and try again.
When they re-flashed KitKat did it wipe your tablet? The OTA failed me when rooted, failed me after un-installing adaway and un-rooting and removing KingUser. I cannot do a firmware upgrade via Kies 3 as it's not available. I cannot do an emergency firmware recover via Kies 3 as it's not soft bricked. I can't find either the KitKat or the Lollipop firmwares online anywhere... Currently I have a tablet, works fine, I did a factory reset (in the back of my mind knew this wouldn't work) that has a custom status and won't take the OTA.
If anyone knows where I can find the KitKat firmware, or the OTA, please let me know.
Or maybe someone could grab the OTA off their tablet after downloading prior to updating and share the wealth with the community???
Has any kingroot user tried triangle away, unroot via kinguser, and take the OTA?
Also just realized that if I can fail the OTA, I can obviously download it... Where do I grab it from if I wanted to flash it with odin or sideload?

OTA came down successfully while not rooted. The reflash at Best Buy didn't wipe it.
As far as I know, the factory images for the AT&T versions aren't available anywhere, or at least I've been unable to find them. They obviously exist because I'm pretty sure the guy at Best Buy used Kies to flash with an image that's available to him from Samsung.
I re-rooted last night in the attempt of using triangle away to clear customs status, then un-rooting. This was odd because device status still shows custom but download mode shows official and Knox is 0.
While I was briefly rooted again I downloaded the OTA in the hopes of copying it to my PC and updating via ADB Sideload... Couldn't find it. If anyone knows where Samsung puts these I'll grab it and post it to share.
im not rooted, performed a factory reset, and my device still doesn't see any updates. Can somebody provide a link to the ROM?

The OTA gets downloaded to /cache. If you are rooted you can see it. But the OTA is not a complete ROM, just a differential to the ROM you have.

Turns out there is a imei problem with the tablet that is preventing the download. My imei number is paired with a IPhone 4. Anyway will take a few day to fix then the upgrade should work.
I get the same. I wiped my device hoping for a different outcome, and still no update.
I found this in the thread below.
It is an old tread but I'll comment anyway. SM-T807 is the 3G version while SM-T805 is the LTE version. Both Hardware (CPU/GPU) and comms modules are different. So 805 LTE (which has Lollipop) firmware won't work for 807 (no Lollipop is currently available nor Samsung plans to release soon).

John.
After not being able to take the OTA after rooting, even after un rooting, not being able to find the OTA and sideload (not in /cache), and not able use Kies or Odin I finally took it to the Samsung kiosk at my bestbuy.
They reflashed 4.4.2, didn't wipe anything, and immediately downloaded and successfully installed the lollipop update after getting home and on WiFi.
Just don't mention that you rooted ;')

[Q] Any way to get rid of the recurring 5.1 upgrade notification?

I'm currently on 5.0, but rooted, and with a bunch of xposed modules on there. I'd be happy unrooting and removing TWRP if it were easier. Plus, I like the setup I have. Thing is, I keep getting this popup to upgrade, which I know will send me in a bootloop and it's getting pretty annoying.
Any solutions been found? Or as least an easy way to get TWRP off so I can upgrade and then re-root?
Thanks, y'all. Can't tell you how much XDA has helped me out.

Just freeze with titanium or some other app the MotoOTA and you wont be notified of updates anymore
Download the 5.0 factory image for your device, Flash stock recovery, stock system.img. No need to wipe anything, all your apps and settings will remain, update to 5.1, you can reflash SuperSU, twrp, xposed for 5.1 after the update.

Unroot help?? I'm desperate!! :(

Hello! I'm very much a beginner at tinkering with root and for months now I've been meaning to unroot my Galaxy S5 but I have no idea how to go about doing that! Especially because I am very afraid I will wipe all my apps/data or brick my phone. I used this tutorial exactly, and it worked perfectly. www (dot) w0lfdroid.com/2014/09/TowelRoot-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-S5-and-Note3-Android-4.4.2-NF-or-Later.html
However, I really want my phone to update to Lollipop and the update won't work while my phone is rooted with that ROM I loaded... I tried unrooting it, and it still won't update. I tried to flash my stock firmware, but it doesn't take.
If I am able to update my software without uninstalling root as well, I'd love that.
At this point I don't even mind completely resetting the phone back to the state when I bought it just so I can update the software. But I read somewhere that a factory reset might not even take care of the problem? I don't know what to do!!
tl;dr I want to update my phone to lollipop, but since I rooted it, it will not update OTA, flashing original firmware doesn't take for some reason, not sure if a factory reset would even solve the issue of not updating. how do I update it to lollipop/completely wipe the phone and reset it? (SamMobile does not carry the lollipop version for AT&T galaxy s5)

Root 5.1.1 or 6.0.1?

I have a TMobile Note 4 SM-N910T. It's currently on 5.1.1 stock and I just got the OTA Marshmallow update notification. I'd like to try Marshmallow out, but if I allow the OTA update, will I be able to root it later? Or is 6.0.1 unrootable (for now)? If I root it now (before updating to MM) will I still get the OTA update? And will it still be rooted after the update? So many questions!
ota then root
I OTA'ed, now the phone randomly reboots several times a day, and some apps don't work correctly. Great.
factory reset.
*sigh* I was afraid you were going to say that. Now the problem is backing it up. I have a Titanium Backup Pro license, but I only use it on my old rooted GS2. The Note 4 is not rooted so TB won't run on it. All the rooting tutorials say "back up your phone before you root" but you need root to run TB. Chicken or egg? I guess I could try Samsung Kies, don't know if it will back up everything. My photos are backed up to Google Photos, I guess everything else is replaceable, but I would really rather not have to reinstall all my apps one by one after a factory reset.
That brings up another question: when you to go Settings/Backup and Reset, I have "Backup my data" set to On and linked to my Google account, but nowhere can I find documentation of exactly WHAT gets backed up or to WHERE (it says to "Google servers" but what the heck does that mean? I can't find it on my Google Drive or anywhere else on my Google account dashboard.)
I do greatly appreciate your help, by the way.
You could try reinstalling through kies or smart switch. Make sure to clear caches before and after. And see if that works. If it doesnt help, you could flash recovery, root, try to backup as much as you can between reboots and then factory reset. Your apps should automatically download from play store. But without the titbackup files you'll lose settings and data in a lot of apps that Google doesn't backup.
I unlocked your mum's bootloader.

Were you able to downgrade back to 5.1.1? My phone also download the MM ota but I haven't installed it. I rooted 5.1.1 first and am trying to locate where exactly the MM ota downloaded to.
Been hearing too much about problems with MM.

There aren't that many problems with MM. Just superficial stuff like not having mobile data toggle. The problems you are hearing about a factory reset will fix. Like lag, jankyness, apps loading, phone freezing temporarily. You won't be able to do OTA. It will fail because of root. You need to titanium backup or whatever method you prefer of backing up data and flash through kies, odin or smart switch. Probably easier to go that route unless you only did minor things with root like just block ads, then you can probably get away with flashing stock recovery and then OTA. You still might have to factory reset like I had to even though I flashed whole rom through smart switch. If you have xposed or modified something like swapping recent apps and back key like me, then you'll need to flash marshmallow whole and start over after backing up.
Afaik, you can't downgrade to 5.1.1 unless somebody figured out a workaround or you only flashed everything except bootloader.
I unlocked your mum's bootloader.
@Shad0wsabr3, my phone gave me the choice to delay the upgrade for a while, but eventually just did it without my consent. I suppose you could download stock 5.1.1 from sammobile if you really wanted to downgrade. I just wish I could figure out how to back up my (unrooted) phone so I could then do a factory reset and see if it helps the problems I'm having.

Iv never backed up an unrooted device so I wouldn't know. Glad you nrought that up as Iv been meaning to look into that.
Would you happen to know where the downloaded ota file location is? My phone downloaded it and I keep postponing it.
Sorry, idk exactly where in the file system it is. All I can caution you again is, I kept postponing it and postponing it, and then one day the phone just popped up a message saying it was going to reboot and update, whether I liked it or not. Well, it didn't actually SAY whether I liked it or not but it did decide that I had postponed the update long enough and it was going to apply the update, giving me no option to postpone it any longer. That sort of pissed me off.
Please let me know if you come up with a backup solution. I've tried SimpleADB or whatever it is called these days, and another app that claimed to be able to back up an unrooted phone. Neither of them worked as advertised.

I'm still researching what your dealing with. As for me I found the ota file. For those looking for it this is how and where I found it....
With RomToolbox I went to root browser. Then to data folder and a folder named fota. Within the fota folder is the ota update named update.zip. I erased that and then went into Titanium Backup and chose to freeze both software update files. So far no constant reminders that I have an update ready to be installed.
Hope this may help.
