You can already run Ubuntu desktop on the Shield Tablet. Just by the way. Maybe you can install the Ubuntu Touch desktop environment there?

[Q] Debian or Ubuntu?

Starting fresh on my spare laptop. Anyone have any preferences between Debian or Ubuntu? I can't decide.
Also, as far as developing is concerned, is linux just linux or will one distro be better than the other?

Ubuntu is for the easy Linux user, but also good for laptops. I say go the osx86 route, I've got Snow Leopard running Vanilla on my laptop.
yeah I've been using ubuntu for a while I was thinking about switching it up to debian, but theres no real reason. osx86 I tried that along time ago and it didnt install so i gave up, i didnt really want it anyhow, it's not very friendly for me i suppose i like having full control over it i guess. maybe I'll try it. lol i have an xp laptop, win7 laptop, ubuntu desktop, and xp desktop. the extra one i moved from xp to 7 but im going to move it to linux.
Osx86 has grown fast, to the point where it's just a couple of steps to install.
1.Get a boot CD
2.Grab a retail Snow Leopard distro(Doesn't have to be store bought if you get my drift...)
3.Install!
4.DSDT auto patcher
You're done!
Nawcom boot CD that auto detects your hardware and if you are capable of using vanilla or not(Basically Core, Core 2, i3, i5, i7 cpus can use vanilla). Doesn't patch your dsdt automatically though.
http://blog.nawcom.com/?p=446
DSDT auto patcher! You can generate your DSDT if it's available, or just create a generic one!

Netburst might be able to run Vanilla, I'm not sure. Try out Legacy or Modbin for sleep.
Linux Mint is the way to go man! It's like Ubuntu just with lots and lots of improvements. The speed is also better I was amazed when I went from Ubuntu to Mint 10. It's just better
For the most "painless" version def get Ubuntu. But it is rather bloated - though easily remedied.
I like Debian a lot too - but it's not as simple as Ubuntu's stick the disc in and forget it. Also I love the updater - I have a "glorified phone charger" netbook that I keep updated and it runs pretty snappy considering the hardware is dog slow.
Ubuntu 10.10 hands down, netbook remix is nice, desktop version would also work fine on your lappy.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 but it bores me. I was thinking mint debian edition. But I may just go straight debian with gnome. I know my way around linux so troubleshooting issues when they come up isnt a problem. I have a virtual debian command line only server to stream my music through http runs well enough. Never really played with gentoo. lol I really think the real difference between linux is their GUI.
How about this, whoever can come up with the most rediculous/funniest reason why I should install it. I will install your suggested operating system...... GO!!!

As an ahead, please, no OS bashing. I would just like to know how many of you use linux as your day to day OS. Me, I've used just about everything out there, but these days I've settled on Ubuntu. It has worked perfectly for me for years, so I stay with it. You?

Unless I need PS or Reason I use Ubuntu....
I'm even liking Unity now
Not sure Ubuntu actually counts as Linux though to the hardcore folks....
I mainly use Ubuntu for almost everything. For gaming, I use Windows 7.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and trying to get used to Unity... I think they made big mistake by removing Classic desktop and forcing Unity. Probably I'll change distro soon.
Ubuntu is my main OS for years.
I used to use Kubuntu as my OS because I like the way it works, its really stable and fast and using less resources then Windows 7, I tried the recent Opensuse 12.1 version and Kubuntu version, they are both good.
But because I don't wish to dual boot and I need Windows 7 for playing games like cod I'm right now using Windows 7 and that is mainly because one application called QQ which doesnt have video chat in Linux and of course I got the resources for running a virtual Windows xp for that app, but I think its not worth it.
But if games and that app where working then I would use Linux as my main os, but I also have an legal license off Windows 7 home premium and I consider Windows 7 as an very good operating system so in fact I like using it because it works good.
But i'm for sure not going use Windows 8, right now I consider Windows 7 stable and fast ( I got an SSD ) but I guess if I didnt need use QQ that then when I quit gaming that I could use Linux, but its because my gf, I need to adjust to her and webQQ is troublesome with video chat.

Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell.

To me it wont matter at all, as i'm still forced to use Windows in the office, but on the personal level
all my PCs and Laptops are on LinuxMint or Ubuntu, or some other dedicated server versions of Debian or FreeBSD, like my home made load balancing router with pFsense, and FreeNAS
They work better if not waaaaaaaaaaaay better than Windows XP, Vista, 7 and most definitely 8
now the latest version of Ubuntu can even run on Android Phones, which makes it even better
there are also native phone version of Ubuntu as well
I've been using Linux since Win9x times, that when Linux was still mostly command lines and ugly X11 GUI
Also if you are a Gamer, YES, Linux does work with Windows Games, it's not plug and play easy as on Windows, but is getting there, just install Wine, or your favourite Emulator for whatever you need to get the game running.
You also got the free virtual box, so you can run technically anything you want in your Linux box
very few games lik only those annoying MMORPG that have security anti hacking protection, will require to be installed in a virtual Windows, as they are not able to compatible in Linux
Most games installs and plays just fine in Wine

Dear Everyone,
Have you tried Linux? If you did, what distribution did you use?
Your Regards,
AlpyzDX
P.S: I do not use Linux as a host (Usually Guest on my Mac or Live USB on a normal laptop) my normal laptop is a Mac using Lion, but I still like Linux, and Windows too.
I try Ubuntu every time there's a new version. Pangolin is close but still not ready for me to use it as my daily. I don't have the patience or the willingness to tinker to get my computer working at 100%
Ubuntu love it best os in my opinion

Linux Mint - mainly because the support forum is much better and more friendly than the Ubuntu one. And Clem + team put so much thought and effort into customising Ubuntu to the point where it is more user-focused.
For me Ubuntu have really fallen away the last few releases. If I want something easy to install I go with fedora otherwise its arch Linux

What happened to your laptop for refusing to boot into Ubuntu?
I cut my teeth on Mandrake 9.0, then moved onto Debian. Things lagged, which is fine because Debian is all about stability. Ubuntu came around, but I never cared for Gnome. Been a Kubuntu user since 2004.
Most distributions have a live CD or a live bootable image for a thumb drive.
Download ones you might like, give them a spin on your computer to see if the hardware will work, and go from there.
Ignore the window manager/desktop environment flame fests. Just find what will work well for yourself.

Windows OS?

If the phone is Intel based, is it possible to run Windows on it - even if its a cut down version?
Windows desktop? Don't think so. Wouldn't scale right on the 4:3" screen.
Windows Phone? Maybe. But it would take a lot of time, time which I think should be invested into Android ROM baking and stuff.
^
agree.
If you can make the boot loader to read GRUB or MBR partition tables than the phone will load a Win XP/Vista/7/8 because of the native x86 instructions in the processor. Trying to find matching drivers then is the next step.

I think Intel have changed quite a lot within the x86 based architecture to be running fan-less and at that level of battery consumption.
Porting a x86 PC OS would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack and that's just getting it booting.
As for windows phone it has more chance of getting ported to any other android phone as it runs on ARM.

As in the stock bootloader won't let you boot from whatever you need to boot from? I figured with an unlocked bootloader, there wouldn't be any issues on that front.
then tell me how to make it boot from my sd card xD
Oh, I have no idea. I just thought those problems would be over. I guess the bootloader just doesn't support that function.

That phone is of no help since it uses wrong chip. It uses the Intel atom z530 made in 2008 long before Intel remodeled them for mobiles.
RAZR I uses a atom (soc) completely different.
As I said would be extremely difficult for little in return.
As for booting from sdcard if it doesn't support it then there's nothing we can do to the bootloader to get that to work.
We could boot to nand then mount sdcard partition partitions other phones have ran android from sdcard.

I'd be more than happy to help sponsor some development to have the RAZR i running Windows 8 Pro not Windows 8 phone.
I was quote about $2000 for a ITG xpPhone 2 a while ago, with the RAZR i being about $500 unlocked with a newer chipset and a thinner device, it would be really nice to have instead. I have asked for another quote for the ITG xpPhone 2 to see if the price has come down at all.
I'd didn't buy it yet as I thought with Windows 8 being released, there might be a bit more interest in getting it to run on Intel Medfield phones.
I really want a Windows 8 Pro device that I can have in my pocket.
Win 3.1 through aDosBox ?
Another way could be to use aDosBox ?
As for the Asus transformer

Does the Razri version remove the x86 emulation layer ?
http://www.freeware4android.net/motorola-razr-i-xt890-device-2815/adosbox-get-24103.html
It should provide a faster version than the current ARM-based Android version.
We were talking about the real Windows 8/Windows Phone 8, not 3.1 through emulation.
Any news about installing a real desktop windows on this device ? Are there any x86 phone that can do that anyway ?
My main goal is to build an x86 handheld for retro games (old native windows games), probably coupled with an iControlPad 2.

The only thing that would run fine is Windows 8 desktop but we need someone to write an UEFI bootloader for the Razr i first. Actually I'm not specifically interested in the Razr i, just wanted to know if it was possible to run desktop windows in x86 phones, my real target is the upcoming Lenovo K900, which have killer specs that should be good enough for a desktop windows 8.
I though that being x86 theses phones can install anything x86, it is not that simple it seems, too bad -.-

Seems fishy. The lockscreen was an Android lockscreen, and the error popup also looked like an Android popup.
I honestly think he was just using something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XwIeWfvcZ_o#!
It seems that the ASUS tablet 810 has a medfield SoC and runs windows 8, so it's almost certainly within the capabilities of the hardware. The question is whether or not we can get the bootloader to play nice or maybe stick a custom bootloader on it.

Windows 8 RT on the GT-P73XX?

I briefly tried Win 8 RT during christmas, and thought it might be fun if someone
managed to get this running on our device. I know there are quite a few challenges,
but this is where the really clever guys are. Right?
http://wmpoweruser.com/htc-hd2-wp8-port-leads-to-windows-rt-on-the-htc-hd2/
Would be nice to have that extra option. I feel android is kinda 2-dimensional.
as far as I know, it's not possible to run any windows on tab 8.9, or it'll be just super slow. This is because windows phones/tablets are not running an ARM processor that most current devices have.
I don't think Windows RT will ever come to the 8.9 tablet and if it comes it would be very slow. The processor in the 8.9 is good for Android but Windows RT is far heavier and requires way more power.
