HOLD OFF BUYING A NEW PHONE UNTIL OCULUS CONNECT [Carmack] - Samsung Gear VR

John Carmack kindly shared this on twitter today:
"If you are considering buying a phone for VR, you might want to hold off until after Oculus Connect for relevant information."

i think i well go with meta-watch
I'd love to walk around with this watch, a Nexus 7, and Project Glass
Pebble Watch
This one got alot of buzz surrounding it's Kickstarter campaign. They were looking to raise $100,000 and ended up with over $10 million.
http://getpebble.com
There are over 68,000 pre-orders so you might be waiting awhile
They said they are looking to ramp up production to 15,000 per week sometime after September.
How could you text via this watch? Lol
I was thinking of picking up a Nano & watchband, I don't really see myself playing games on a little phone, especially for that price range, the nanos are 100? + $50 watch band = same concept?

I preordered this in January (right after CES) and they were supposed to ship in April. April came and went and imwatch kept pushing the ship dates back and back and without any word of why the delay. I requested a refund and that alone took 15 business days to process. I even called Italy long distance (using google voice) and they STILL didn't do anything correctly. Really bad customer service. I am a pebble backer Waterproof ftw IMO. :highfive:
And I have seen ONE person get their i'm watch. That's very suspect, because if the stated 300 "beta" users were supposed to get their im watches, I haven't heard or seen any youtube vids of any sort.
i just bought the motorola motoactv to sync to my phone after motorola announced a @100 price drop. for $200, its a 16gb smart watch that will read facebook updates, sms, allow you to answer calls (you can sync a bluetooth headset or use a wired headset on the watch itself), has GPS tracking, accelerometer. however, its more of a fitness oriented watch with limited customisability, and most existing apps are fitness related.
the sony mn2 smartwatch is cheaper, but the screen isnt as good as the motorola, and it doesnt have any notable storage options. the sony smartwatch is nothing more than a mere digital watch when its not sync'd to the device, as all the apps are just widgets to read stuff from your android device. the advantage is that its much more customisable than the motorola.
So I pre-order the I’m Watch 11/2011 (over a year ago), and I’m still waiting for it. I opened a trouble call to get an update and got the following answer within 24 hrs.
Dear Customer,
we have started and will proceed with the deliveries in chronological order up until the 15th of September.
Once your order will near the shipping, the tracking number will be available to follow its schedule and have a more precise date.
The discount will be provided to you shortly before the shipping. Our administration still has to evaluate whether to provide it via bank transfer or on the credit card used for the payment if possible.
Best regards,
i'm Staff

CC as a Cheap Xmas Present/Stocking Stuffer

Lots of offices have 'secret santa' arrangements, or maybe you're the kind of person who just loves to give out interesting, and hopefully cheap, widgets for Xmas gifts to friends/co-workers like I do. This year, I decided Chromecasts were the way to go: introduce tech to folks stuck in an i-everything world, not need much after-gift support, etc. etc. So I walk into Bestbuy, head to the TV section and easily locate Roku, WDTV, Sony streamers. I look and look. No Chromecasts. I ask a blueshirt...he knows what it is, but doesn't know where it is. He asks another blueshirt..he doesn't know what it is. He asks another blueshirt, who 'knows' what it is (but doesn't really) and says it's over in comuters ' because it's actually a flashdrive". 'Oh..okay' I said, trying my best to hide my rolling eyes and avoiding the nagging pressure to set him straight..I occasionally have focus. I walked to computer and still could fine them. Asked another blueshirt, 'oh they're in front of the back service desk' as she points. I walk over and continue to search. FINALLY, I find a Google display, that looks like a faux wood locked cabinet, see-through glass with Chromecasts hanging inside a few inches off the floor. Pathetic. I wait another 12 minutes while someone finds a key to unlock the cabinet. Ultimately, someone never seen screaches over the walkie-talkie to my anxious blueshirt that no keys can be found. I sigh aloud. A blueshirt overhears the 'commotion' while checking out someone's new laptop at the service desk beside us, and pipes up...'you know, I think there may be a few hanging near the Chromebooks...low and behold, I find 4 Chromecasts hanging in small locked plastic cases right next to the HP 14 Chromebook. The service desk can sell them to me, but I must have them unlocked at the front, while the laptop buyer can walk right out the door. Unbelievable. Took a half hour, in a Bestbuy that literally had a dozen customers, at least 2:1 blueshirt to customer ratio, to buy a cheap device hidden and locked down tighter than Fort Knox. Lesson: Xmas shopping sucks...unless you go Amazon. Cheers, and Merry Xmas!
Be sure to put that in your customer feedback. That store is majorly slacking. I'm pretty sure Google puts good money into having those displays there. Also, Chromecasts should be in both the Computer and the TV/Audio/Home Theater departments.
Sad.

The Packaging is so small that I suppose they were flying off the shelf but not being paid for! LOL
Hence the Lockbox!
I bought 3 from Amazon at $29.99 each as Christmas presents to give loved ones.

The last BestBuy that I found a huge amount of them at they were on a free standing shelve display in the middle of a large open floor area in no real department. It was a new store and very big.

Yeah, I visited one that had all the new stuff - Microsoft wall-o-stuff, Samsung Experience, a Google wood theme endcap near the front of the store and a Google wood theme mini-pavilion in the computer area. The overall store design seems to be moving toward more islands rather than aisles.

Does anyone know when its officially coming to Canada?
I don't have one yet, but I plan on ordering one very soon once my bank account can allow for it. Tax returns should help with that.
It literally became the second biggest reason for me to own the Note 4 aside from the series' signature Wacom digitizer. If Oculus has enough low-level access to the Note 4 that they can tune the kernel and everything, it'll give me a good taste of what the Rift CV1 will have to offer over the current devkits.
Granted, the Note 4, while powerful for a smartphone, is weak sauce compared to any half-decent gaming PC, so that'll hold it back quite a bit. In the short term, I might be able to experiment with software like Trinus Gyre to turn it into a makeshift Rift (albeit with inherently higher latency). In the long term, someone might develop simulators that can be played adequately on the Note 4's hardware and a Bluetooth gamepad.

You should ask that question in the VR forum.
But with online ordering it's worldwide.
Got one here since a month... best buy so far in the last 2 years.
It's really impressive.
Imported it to Germany

Did you do anything special to the phone to get it to work? Does Samsung services like Milk work where you live?

Yawn. I've used VR and 3D gaming in the past, and have to say I have no intention to bank roll this short lived experiment.

Gear VR For S6 and S6 Edge Preorders Start today!

Best buy is taking preorders for the Gear VR for the S6 and edge. What are your guy's opinions of the device?? Has anybody tried it out here?
I kind of want to get one but they're priced at $250 so I'm kind of weary...
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...hite/7115001.p?id=1219668765995&skuId=7115001
i'll wait for the review and feedback before jump the gun on this.
Yesterday it was announced everywhere that it would be $200, so I am kinda bummed by Best Buy's pricing as well.
Yeah, I thought it was going to be $200 as well. When I saw Best Buy's price I was a little bummed. I'm hoping it either drops or they include some kind of bonus with the device. I doubt it though.
Hopefully one of our XDA compadres has some hands on experience with one and can give us some insight.
Samsung hasn’t revealed a price, most of the site assume it will cost the same as the existing Galaxy Note 4 edition, which is $199, read more from the links below.

I have an Oculus Rift DK2.
This will be worth every penny.

Well I said "this will" meaning discussing something in the future, whereas I already own a Rift.
But to put it more plainly, I have Oculus's main peripheral and it's amazing, so I've no doubts that the upcoming one will be fantastic in its own right. Yes, a phone can't hold a candle to a PC in terms of processing and graphics power, but you'd also have no wires to deal with.

i know, because you and nothingshocking ask why Bestbuy charged $250 when supported only $200, that's why i said Samsung hasn't revealed the price yet and i included the link.
Has anyone seen these listed in the UK yet? I'm interested depending on final price.
Pretty sure I'm going to be buying one but my guess is with Australian tax if its even offered for sale here I'll be looking at $400+ lol considering samsung only just recently started selling normal gear vr here i think its gonna be ages for the S6 version landing here.
Just going to order one from overseas if the reviews are good.

That's a bummer that they're so much more. I think I will end up getting one as well.
Bestbuy is now charging 199. Just ordered mine.
I switched from the Note 4 + Gear VR to the S6 Edge.
They have some very impressive videos and games with the Gear VR. Also very impressive, no matter if you're a fan or not, are the adult videos you can get for it. Technically it's extremely funny to see what a different feeling those glasses can give you. As I said, no matter if you're a fan of this stuff or not. You should definitely check one of these videos out anyway.
Am I going to buy a VR for the S6 Edge? No, not now. There is a huge lack of content to keep you interested in it. It's getting more content every day, especially since they released the Oculus store for the Gear VR but a lot of the stuff is not even worth a free download.
Personally, I think the Oculus Rift is a better deal right now (VR glasses wise. I know that you need a pc and can't use it with the phone). Especially when you see people playing games like "Alien" or there was a horror game demo that I watched on Youtube (don't remember the title). Those videos already make you crap your pants without playing this game. THIS kind of content in this quality is currently completely absent for the Gear VR. I hope it's following, but it's not there yet.
One good thing of the updated revision of the VR for the S6E is, that they bring something to cool down the phone. Can be quiet annoying if you get a message every 1min "Wait until the phone cooled down, otherwise you risk to damage it. Press a button to continue anyway".
I'll definitely let some time pass and wait what content is coming up for it. But I'll definitely get another one in the future. Question is just: How fast that will be
Yeah, I saw that they were only $199 now. I just also saw that the oculus rift is coming out Q1 of 2016.. So I think I may hang around and wait for that. not sure. I want to be able to bring it to my friends house and stuff so I can show it off though. I am going to go try it in store on the 8th and then decide :/. I am torn right now lol..
I ordered one today.
I want to see if its alot better then the google cardboard..

I have a cardboard kit as well and its the main reason I wanted to get the Gear VR lol. It is awesome, but I think the real headset is going to be so much better!!
Just ordered one as well, but need to wait 4-5 days for pick up, dont forget to grab bestbuy movers coupon for 10% off to set off the tax. I'll see if it's worth $200, if not, I can always return it within 14 days.

Should I buy the Pebble Time?

Hey,
I have one gathered before me which costs around 95GBP, including shipping to my country.
I've told my dad that I'm interested in getting a watch and particularly this one. However, since it's my first time wearing a watch, will it be comfortable will I notice it, do I sleep with it? wink:
I'm pretty much sold with pebble, I like their direction, the price is right, now I need a final push to order it.
Persuade me into getting the watch please.
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Peppa
I was looking for a simple smartwatch that can show notifications and who's calling, i spent almost two weeks seeing reviews about android wear and Pebble. I ended up ordering a Pebble Time yesterday What had me sold was the battery life, the dev support, brightness in direct sunlight and the simplicity of the watch (and the price )
Pebble watches are the only smart watch that is also compatible with iOS. This was my big selling point.
