Z3c Water Damage - wont hold a charge - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Z3C about 6 months old. Took it into the pool with me for 10 min and it shut off.
Water got into the charging port. Sent it back to Sony and was told my warranty is invalid since i unlocked the bootloader.
Currently it will not charge when plugged into a normal wall power charger. If i use a cable direct from a pc, it will slowly trickle charge (1% every 30 minutes).
It seems that either the usb port is broken or the battery is shot.
Anyone know what to change or look for to repair the issue?

Try a different charger cable combo (even though I doubt thats the issue). However since pc does charge it means the connections aren't shorted and are carrying a charge. So give a different charger a go before anything else.
Even though water shouldn't have any affect on the battery since the controller is (presumably) sealed along with the the cells, try the magnetic charging pins along the devices side and see if it charges. If it does then there's something wrong with the charger/cable/port/socket.

tilt totally dead, cannot recharge, cannot turn on, help.

hi, new member here.
bought my tilt on 10/4/07. has been flawless since that time.
used the nav quite a bit during a road trip, used a cig lighter usb charger.
got home and my battery was at roughly 40%.
put it on the charger at night went to sleep. in morning disconnected it at 8 am. shortly after i arrived at work i got the critical battery low chime. checked and it had like 7% battery life.
figured i didnt plug it in right, or it got knocked loose some how and didnt get charged.
put it in flight mode to minimize battery usage. left work at 2 30 pm (4% battery life) and put it on the car charger. got home and put it on the HTC supplied wall charger. light turned amber, so i assumed it was charging.
checked an hour later and turned phone on, it said 0%, and immediately died. left it on the charger for a few hours and the light was still amber, turned it back on and again 0% and phone immediately died and did a soft reset on its own. i turned the phone off and left it on the ac charger, took out the sim card and put it in an old blackberry to use while the battery was charging.
its been on the ac wall charger for the last several hours, i checked and the phone is totally dead, cannot turn it on, and the LED at the top is now RED.
what is the problem here? why wont this thing charge?
thanks in advance, i have alot of critical info on this device and any help would be greatly appreciated.
i cannot hard reset because i cannot turn the flippign thing on....
Does it charge when you connect it to your computer? If it does, then your charger is toast. If not, then it's probably the phone itself.
I'd try a different charger first. If that makes no difference then a different battery. If that still does not make any difference then time to exchange it.

connected to either the computer or the wall charger, the LED thats normally amber when charging, and green when charged, remains red.
I had something very similar happen to my wizard.
And as weird as it sounds, the only fix was to charge the battery in a friends wizard on his charger. I'd check the battery if possible.
Could be the battery. Know any place or anyone that will let you try a charged battery? If not, you might have to go in to an AT&T store.
i think i got it working. did some reading/browsing...
took a usb wire and cut the mini usb head off. dissected it and found the the red and black charging wires. took out the battery and held the leads to teh battery while the other end was plugged into a USB/AC adapter wall charger from a old blackberry. after manually charging the battery for several minutes, i put the battery back in the phone and the phone started up. now it seems to be charging off the wall charger and the led is now amber from red.
thanks for all your help/suggestions.
well it worked briefly. the amber light has gone back to red and it seems that the battery is not charging.
dont know what happened to my perfectly functioning phone.

Repeat this proceedure but this time do not turn the phone on, just plug it in to the wall charger once you have zapped the battery again.
Turning your phone on probably just caused the already recovering battery to die whiles it is trying to take on a charge.
It is mentioned quite a lot on the boards that Li-Ion Batteries do not like being over disscharged and there is usually a little protection circuit in the battery to provent complete disscharging although this circuit may be on board the phone. Completely disscharging a Li-Ion cell will kill it stone dead and it will need replacing.
When you took the battery out and so called jump started it with your flying leads, this possibly reset the little protection circuit in the battery so it can now take on a charge. I feel that once you turned on the phone, this was to much for the already depleted cell to take and possibly re-tripped its inbuilt circuit.
If you do manage to recover you cell, in future it is good practice not to let the battery go below about 25%. Li-ion cells are generally happy being top off regularly.
I hope this helps buddy
Do let us know!
Cheers
C.
thanks, that was very helpful.
ive tried defibrillating this battery out of the dead several more times to no avail.
ill try it one more time when i get home from work, if its a no go i will go to teh att core store. the phone is 6 weeks old, dont know what they can do for me if the battery is toast...
That Sucks! I hope they'll give you a new battery.

I had exactly the same problem with my battery. It came on though after a day. Although the battery life after this happened went down to 10hrs max on standby. I sent the phone back and got a new one and now all is fine.
This is a problem that affects almost all makes of phone. There are three (main) causes of the problem:
1.
The battery charge drops too low to allow the charging circuit to recognise a battery is even in place (red no charge light stays lit)
possible solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...22&postcount=6
(in the end very similar in the end to the USB wire used in post above)
2.
A faulty battery (but if you can charge it using a cut usb cable or using a couple of AA batteries this may not be a faulty battery.
3.
A faulty charger OR a charger not delivering 5v at 1000mA as the OEM one does. Many chargers that are used for other phones or generic chargers only deliver 500mA. This is not enough when your battery drops very low. (these chargers are OK for occasional use but I do not advise using them regularly particularly if the no-charge syndrome has shown itself)
4.
A faulty USB connection on the phone. I have now seen a couple of reports where the fine wire connections in the phones USB port have become bent out of place.
Number 4 above is at least possible for the OP as it seems the battery will charge using a cut USB cable but not when either the PC USB cable or mains charger is connected. A USB port on the phone with a a bent internal contact would explain what's happening.
A previous poster was able with a needle or similar to bend the contact back into place.
Mike
i had the same problem with my phone.
put it in the charger overnight and woke up in the morning and couldnt turn on the phone with blinking red light. I don't know if my battery was over-drained though. I went to AT&T and was playing around with their charger and new battery and somehow the so-called dead battery started working again. They changed the SIM card on my phone there and then i haven't been able to use the phone since. I've changed the network to GSM instead of Auto setting under Phone Options which allows us to make calls; but now I can't connect to 3G network.
Charging thru mini usb
My phone started to exhibit similar problems...plugged in but no charging of the battery. I finally realized that my mini usb connection on the phone has been compromised (bent, distorted=not functioning properly) Now I have to prop the mini usb connection up at a slight angle to engage the charge. I think the plastic/metallic connector on the phone is somewhat fragile ...I had similar issues with my hermes.
called customer support.
they are sending me a new phone and battery.
how do i know its not a refurbished one? any clues?
before u send out your defect phone, have u check if your phone's mini-USB connector has bent or misaligned pins?
yeah all the connectors visually are fine.

Batterty is alive, but won't charge

Well I'm at about 2% battery life, and it will not charge. I'm using my computer to charge it. Charging it from the wall hasnt worked for me for a while, not sure why.
Anyway I was wondering what it can be? I doubt my battery's dead or something is wrong with the phone... I'm sorry if this question's been answered, but I couldnt find an answer on google.
If USB charging works, but not charging with the AC adapter then the adapter is either bad, or plugged into a bad power outlet.
Nope it's neither of those because Ive tried two working AC ountlets and two warking cables. However, that's not my problem, my phone died and I can't charge it :-/
Ya so the phone died. It didn't look like it was going to charge on the USB, really weird. Anyone ever have there phone refusing to charge? While it was alive I tried to run activesync; that didn't work. So what should I do?
Btw, I've had the phone for a couple months now and I haven't had any big problems. I don't think it can be my phone failing, worst case just the battery. I've had something similar before but it fixed itself, doesn't look like thats happeneing now.
Battery
Maybe charging from the computer wasn't such a good idea. I recommend changing the battery and the charger and always be a nice boy and charge from the outlet ::- ).
I had the same thing happen to me - the connector at the bottom was broken. I had to do a return to factory. I looked (using a magnifying class) at the bottom of the phone and clearly see a crack in the connector.
It doesn't charge from the outlet.... I kinda just explained that lol

Hmm my connector does look a little bent. However it would of had to be like this before, and it was charging until I let my battery get to 5% :-/
I had a similar problem with my Kaiser a couple of weeks ago - it started to crawl and a soft reset took over 15 minutes to come back up to a working state, after which the battery wouldn't charge. It definitely wasn't the charger at fault as that still works on my TyTN. Phone was about 3 months old, so called Vodafone UK who seemed to think it was software related and so provided next day swap out. Old battery works in the new handset so never did get to find out if it was hardware or software that caused it to die.
Here's what probabally happened... you meant to stick you stylus in the reset hole and accidently put it in the usb hole... thus bending your charging port. I did it and when I plugged it into my car it would actually discharge the battery.. but when I plugged it into an outlet it just wouldn't charge.. if I were you I'd go see if it charges in a car
I appear to have a similar issue when charging from PC usb, and have identified that if I put pressure up or down on the charger it will charge the kaiser. But if plug in the charger without applying directional force it will not charge. Currently i have a small weight resting on the mini USB chargin input.
So obviously something up with the connector. But I haven't jammed anything up the usb port to my knowledge. Are these ports really that flimsy?
Tilt owners: If charge mechanism breaks, is ATT cool?
Oh no, now I can't charge or sync my Tilt.
My power is slowly running out.
What do I do? This is covered by manufacturers warranty in a year, is
ATT going to take my Tilt back and give me a new one?
I need my phone to be working and working well.
Thoughts?

Charging from the computer should be better than the wall, given that the USB ports on the computer have a 5.5v output, while wall chargers have 5v.

Battery takes forever to charge. Literally.

I just got my Xperia and sometimes when I hook up my phone to the usb charger from the wall it doesn't charge at all. The illuminations don't come on. Sometimes they do.. And when it does "charge" it takes like 9 hours for 2 green bars of charge. It's really slow. I did drain the battery the first time I used it. Is the cable faulty? I don't know. Also, when I turn my phone on it tries to establish an internet connection through like GPRS or EDGE. I don't want to use those features since Wi-Fi is enough for me and I don't wanna pay for those services. How do I stop it from automatically trying to connect to the internet? Data connections are always off in Comm Manager for me..
for the second issue (GPRS) use nodata. google/search the forum. the data connection toggle in comm manager won't stop apps from conneting to the internet
for the first issue, i have no idea, sorry mate. maybe it's a problem with the cable, or the battery, or the phone's power circuits
I had the same problem before and mine was a faulty cable
try changing it, it should solve your problem
also I have a STAT program come with "ae button plus"
it shows me how fast I am charging in mA, some cheap wall charger are as slow as USB.

And that's how you destroy li-ion batteries. Don't do it again!
yeh, li-on batterys like to be charged regular (the x1 has a li-polymer battery but same difference.lol) you dont need to completely discharge and charge like nicad or nimh batterys. they dont have a "memory" like the older batterys, where you need to completely discharge them now and again else they would run out at 50%. sounds like you might have a dodgy charger or cable. the charger i had was a detachable usb cable. mayb try pluggin it into your pc and see if that charges it ok.
from the wall the charger should take about 2 hrs (the wall charger should provide 700ma so a 1500mah battery will take 2hrs or thereabouts) from a pc it should be about 3 -4 hrs as usb supplies around 500ma. either way it definately shouldnt be 9 hrs. new chargers on ebay cost very little so dont panic if its broken.
also your battery should say "1500mah BST-41" on it if its genuine.
More bad news
Well, I contacted Sony Ericsson and they sent me a new battery and charger which I received today. When I started charging it, it showed 5/10 bars and after 10 hours of charging while off (using the wallcharger), it now says it's at 3/10 bars of charge. What is possibly wrong!?!
make sure you are not running programs which may drain
programs you started yourself or programs in windows\startup
and if you're charging over usb use the AC charger and check if the charger or cable is defect

Happened to me when I was charging off 110 volts. switched to 220 and fixed the problem for me. Don't know if it'll help you, but it's worth a shot.

could the cable of yours too long?

phone is dead and wont charge...

For some reason after a couple days of using the iphone wall plug to charge my phone, my phone will no longer charge any more.
When charging with the iphone wall plug it would take forever to charge and im wondering if this may have damaged the battery.
a couple of nights ago when i had my phone on the iphone charger over night I woke up to my phone still being on 20%, the same as when i plugged it in.
since then the battery has been acting very weird and i can't even get it to charge over 20%
right now the orange light does not even blink when i plug in my phone and i have not been able to turn it on since yesterday morning
i have the phone under warranty but i have viper rom running on my phone\\\\How can I get my phone back under warranty if it wont turn on?
Dont have a PC, just my macbook

I don't get it correctly.. did you also try some different connection cables? And with iPhone charger what do you exactly mean... can you send a photo?
If you send it in they'll most likely throw it away and give you a new phone if they are not able to turn it on. Replacing the battery costs way too much for them. But this information describes just a probability.. and that's useless..
He used the wall plug that came with his iPhone. Its also rated at 5V 1000mA output.
It should work just fine.
What i would reccomend is using a different data cable and wall plug. If you dont have one try to borrow one or go into a store.
Its possible that the data cable and / or the wall plug your using is bad.
Those are easy to rule out. If you do get different cable and wall plug and still have a problem then you have ruled out those and its your phone.
Till you do this it is a phone, cable, or wall plug issue.

Sometimes won't charge if plugged in

I've had my N6 for about two weeks now, and lately I've noticed it doesnt charge once I plug it in, I'll go to sleep and a few hours later its still at the same percentage, I check the battery stats page and it shows "Not Charging" I unplug it for a few seconds and the Charging icon sticks as like the phone thinks its still "charging". Another issue I've noticed just now today, it says itll take 4 hours to charge from 56%! Only way for me to fix these issues it is to restart the phone and itll work, mind you this issue only happens sometimes. Although I will say I plugged my LG G2 into the Turbo Charger, so IDK if that affects the charger in any way?
Does anyone else experience this? If this is something no one has I'm planning to swap the device out for another one.
Running SinLess ROM v1.0.3

This may seem obvious but try a different cable. I had a cable that, when plugged in, my phone would say is charging but doesn't actually charge.
I've had my nexus 6 for a couple weeks now and the first time this happened I was using a wireless charge so I thought I didn't have it placed on the mat right. But it happened again last night whilst plugged into an AC charger. The AC charger is an LG charger from a previous Nexus. When I look at the battery graph it just flat lines for the whole time it was plugged in.

My turbo charger is doing the same thing the OP said. We have 2 6's and it also happened to my wife's the other day too. I thought it might have initially been a cable too so I changed that out and it happened to the second charging cable last night as well.
Just experienced this
I use the turbo charger also and just experienced this. I was at 25 % after playing injustice (which just murders this battery) and plugged in the USB and I looked back 5 minutes later at I was at 22 %. So I killed Injustice and waited about 5 minutes more and I was at 19%. I had to reboot to get charging and after 5 minutes of charging I was at 29% so it is weird stuff.
I've been noticing this as well, but my charger is an aftermarket charger by Tenergy (Amazon link), and I'm using an aftermarket cable. Missed my alarm this morning because the phone must have not actually been charging, even though the N6 always shows that it is charging. I haven't tested it thoroughly with the stock charger as I keep that next to my workstation, but it seems that others are having this issue even with the included charger. Frustrating, to say the least.
Same thing with my N6 on 5.1. I would say that 20% of the time i plug in it shows charging but doesn't charge, just maintains the battery at whatever percentage it was when i plugged it in.
I don't have to restart but rather just unplug and re plug in the charger, then monitor for a couple of minutes to make sure the battery is going up and if so it will charge normally.
I also have tried a few different chargers including the quick charger that came with the phone. same result.
the same. here
I have the same issue while charging n6 with Motorola terboxharger ... But it takes 3 h while charging with any other chargers .....any updates !!!

Wow, same here.... only just started to notice it. Using turbo charger as well...however upon using a normal charger, it seems to always charge. it it something with the turbo charger?
Yea it seems to be turbo charger problem , but how come I bought it just one month ago !!
I started noticing the same issue recently. I'd say it started after upgrading to 5.1. I'm using the stock turbo charger. I found a workaround that, so far, fixes it for me (3 nights in a row at least).
After plugging in the phone, I notice the battery icon shows it is charging. If I actually go into the battery settings though, it says it is NOT charging. If I unplug the charging cable and plug it back in while still in the battery settings page (you know, with the usage graph), then it starts charging just fine up until I get a full charge. As long as I do this each time, I seem to get a full charge. Annoying, yes. But not as annoying as waking up to à phone that never charged.
Sometimes it won't charge when it's not plugged in either
For my N6 to charge, I need to push the TC USB cable a little downwards for my phone to charge. Sometimes, it doesn't even charge at all. I'm considering to RMA this, if I can do it here in Norway.
my nexus 6 has different behaviours, if I charge it when it is turned on sometimes it stops the charging and I need to disconnect and reconnect the cable and charging starts again, so i need to be careful because i can't be sure that my phone will charge completely if i leave it alone. if I charge it when it is turned off sometimes it starts to restart continuously showing battery in the screen again and again, without charging. hopefully this happens sometimes, i dont really like this bug, i spent so much money for buying it and i dont want to control if my phone is charging or not when I plugged it, i just want to put in charging and coming bac when it is flly charged.
RMA it
I hope the first thing anybody does is check the charging port and make sure there's nothing in there. Take a strong, sharp toothpick and carefully dig anything out that shouldn't be there. Pocket fuzz etc...
I am having this same issue, my phone is brand new yesterday, running 5.0, I have these exact issues, seems to be only with the turbo charger because I use a slow charger for overnight next to my bed and the battery was full. But I can't seem to make the percentage actually go up with the turbo charger without restarting the phone first.
Any more info on this very annoying bug??
can't seem to figure it out
i have the same issue - my N6 is a couple of months old and it started on an overnight (not) charge. Now it's happening 1 in 2 charges so it's getting worse. I cleaned the connection, tried different cables, USB chargers and plugging into the laptop - no dice. It's going back to Google - annoying...
