Proximity Sensor issue after screen change - T-Mobile LG G4

So after 1 month I cracked the screen on the G4.
I replaced the screen which was super easy luckily. Now having an issue with the screen re-locking when in low light. Also double tap to wake doesn't work however, double tap to sleep works.
Also, when you hit dial on a call or answer a call the screen automatically goes black and you cannot wake until someone hangs up.
Ive searched and seen the issue some people have tried apps to fix this but ive tried everything without success. What gives? When running a phone sensor app, the proximity always reads "Near."
Any Ideas???!!!

I put a glass screen protector on which covered the proximity sensor and I got the same issues. I'm just waiting for something to get rid of the proximity sensor altogether.

I just received my yootech screen protector and that solved all my issues. The sensor on these things are really sensitive.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app

I may have the answer for you hopefully you didn't trash the original screen.
I was having the same issue as you so I went back and throughly examined the original front assembly and found that there is a rubber spacer with two small holes in it that sits down in the hole where the proximity sensor goes. This rubber piece was not on the OEM replacement screen assembly that I had purchased. After pulling this piece out of the original screen and putting it in my new replacement screen the problem stopped. Phone now works like new again!!! Hopefully this solves your problem also.

Thanks a ton!!!!!

It worked. This little sucker made the prox sensor to be as 'near' all the time. so calls or knock code were not working.
Rechecked the original frame and removed the prox assembly you mentioned, two other rubber fillers and the ear piece grill.
Worked like a charm.
Thanks a ton. Have attached a pic for users still looking for a solution.

Dude you are the man! I also replaced my own screen (was almost too easy) but missed this little rubber piece. I scoured the internet and tried everything else, but this ACTUALLY fixed it. Thanks a million!!!
To everyone else still having screen issues: it is a known problem and apparently there are several solutions out there. Most likely you need to do one or more of the following: get your finger off the sensor, re-calibrate it (type 277634#*# in phone dialer. Note: I actually did not have this specific calibration setting on my g4, but others do), software update (probably not), hard reset your phone, or replace your proximity sensor (download one of the apps out there first and run a test).
If non of that works you probably need a new phone XD
Update: You will need the 2 other rubber pieces (mentioned above) for your microphones, otherwise everyone will complain about how you sound on the other end.

You sir are a legend !
This work perfect for me. This should be made a top post as it has just saved me countless time and money.
Hope you have a merry Xmas

Thank you thank you thank you!!!
So tired of trying to figure out 'how to ask' the right question for this issue! Came across this thread and fortunately DID NOT throw out the old screen/digitizer after I replaced with OEM new unit but there were NO instructions regarding this little rubber piece! Couldn't upload the picture but it's EXACTLY like your pic! Thanks again for sharing! I'm fixed!!!

Just finished an LG G4 replacement. Had the same issue and the same fix listed above. Pop the little rubber seating out and into the new screen, works like a charm.

Just cracked my screen..
Where can I find the OEM replacement screen from reliable sources?

Try Etradesupply, I bought from them before, part came in good quality though it cost higher than ebay and Amazon, no complaints. http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-g4-vs986-lcd-assembly-with-frame-no-small-parts-black.html

Thank you resolved my issue

I just replacement my screen from fixez.com,
very important make sure you save the rubber from the proximity sensor and install it on the new display

I kinda threw my old screen away... Anyone knows if I can find a new little rubber piece (whatever it is) and if so, where? Thanks a lot!

Thanks your for your post - Saved my G4 after replacing my cracked LCD at repair shop that failed to transfer that little rubber piece.

For those who lost the rubber
hello guys. I have the H818P LG G4 model and when buying the screen I thought I must buy a dual-sim compatible frame (but now I think that even other screen models work. I didn't notice any difference when I disassembled the phone - but never tried). long story short, I had to send my phone to Iraq to find a compatible screen replacement and I received it back without the little rubber, with all the problems above. I had to improvise until I get my old frame back.
I tried all the apps but none of them worked. Your phone needs to be rooted to disable the proximity sensor, which is extremely risky on LG G4 (and especially on my model) as they don't get proper focus. you also need to downgrade to lollipop if you upgraded your android version to marshmallow. it is quiet complicated.
I read a solution suggesting to put a little piece of foil paper in front of the sensor to reflect the light back to it. It's easier and surprisingly less risky than messing with the software. I'm going to disassemble my phone and try it now.
update: the role of the aluminium foil is not to reflect light, but to obstruct it. the sensor is composed of two compounds: infrared emitter and light detector. the infrared shouldn't reach the light detector if you want the proximity sensor to remain off. After a couple of tries, I used a small piece of duct tape to cover them both. Works fine. side effect: automatic luminosity thinks it's always dark. I didn't bother dissembling my phone again to uncover the light sensor as I don't use automatic luminosity that much and that I'm going to get the rubber within two weeks.

This works. Perfect solution. Had the same problem after a screen replacement

Awesome!

Glad it helped. Enjoy.
I got rid of my G4 after that bootloop auto shut off issue and bought a N6P.
Just restored G4 yesterday with the new method turning off the big cores. Its one of the best phones i had, wish i could get the motherboard fixed under warranty..
Unfortunately i moved out of USA so can't do that anymore.

Thanks a Million!!!! Mhozlock's fix and sud_ran's pictures saved my day! Thought I had somehow ****ed up my girl's phone's proximity sensor when I replaced the screen! Thanks!

Thank you! This must be the problem. I'm guessing that's why the phone speaker has gone super quiet too – I must have lost the gasket for that as well. Wish these gaskets were mentioned in the tear down video I followed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS02J12I1MU), or that I'd been careful enough to notice the damn things. Unfortunately, I chucked the old frame last week so I can't cannibalize it now
If you end up in my situation there seems to be three options:
1) Buy a broken spares-or-repairs G4 on Ebay and cannibalize it. There are a few out there but they tend to be kinda pricey (£40+) for a broken phone
2) Buy a spare part. The G4 prox sensor gasket number is MBL66397801. Some parts retailers list it but none have it in stock currently (Sep 2016)
3) Try making your own by poking holes in a bit of tape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzbznNb-aXM I'm gonna give this a go tonight... wish me luck!

touchscreen not working anymore :(

hi there
as of yesterday i accidentally dropped a jack splitter (like this one.. (click here) onto my pda2 from 1 meter..
at first i thought everything was okay
but then i realized that the touchscreen was not working.. the buttons are working..
though i hesitated that it'd never work again, after taking my imate apart and after i put it all together it worked for 10 mins.. then it stopped working again.. this morning it did the same, worked then stopped..
so my questions are:
1. can it be something other than the touchscreen? there is a small dent on the screen but the image on my today screen is displayed correctly..
2. if i really have to change the screen where would i buy 1?
i found this one but i want to have more options if there is
http://www.pdasmart.com/pdaphonexdaii.htm
thanks...
bump
Touchscreens are replaceable but make sure you buy the correct one, as the screen in Alpine is only one of 2 that could possibly have been fitted in Himalayas i.e a touchscreen for an xda2 is not guarenteed to be compatible with the LCD you have.
Depending on LCM, you could look into a repair of the exisiting digitiser, is the screen marked in any way where the item hit it?
Richard
p.s don't bump so quickly - do your research more thoroughly - you're not the first person to suffer this problem...
yes there is a small dent on the screen
i know i searched the forum but maybe i'm searching with wrong terms.. not much came up.
i don't know any other websites than the pdasmart.....

Then you need a new digitiser, the gap between the touchpanel and glass in the digitiser is reduced where the dent is, so the resistance properties of the digitiser have changed at that point i.e it will think you are always touching that spot. You could remove the plastic overlay, heat it gently and try and bend it back / flatten it but I've tried and never managed to do it
Most places only sell the entire LCD / touchscreen assembly, cheapest I can get for an alpine is about $140 USD for the lot, perhaps check ebay for a unit with a broken LCD?

Suspected touch screen problem

Hi,
I've had my Diamond for a bit more than 2 months now.
Recently I had an odd problem with it.
The touch screen seems to be busted.
The display works fine. However, it doesn't respond to any of my touch commands and it seems like someone is touching the screen randomly, as in, random clicks on the screen.
The hardware buttons work fine, it's just the touch interface of the screen.
First I assumed it was a ROM related problem, as this happened just after I installed Shine On. So I went back to the original ROM again, but the problem persisted. Then I tried another ROM, but same problem!
Therefore I suspect the hardware.
Am I right to assume that the screen is built up of several layers? Such as the TFT screen it self, the touch part, protective glass part, etc.?
This was a week ago and I've been using my old HTC since (waiting for a reply from HTC customer service which haven’t replied yet! ). However, three days ago I tried the Diamond again, and it seems to work flawless..!
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this intermediate problem? Or if anyone has suggestions what could cause this problem?
Thanks for reading
Same s*it!
Hey mate.
I am experiencing the same problem as you do. The touchscreen does not respond or not accurate enough oder in a completelly different ponint than is poninted at. Readjusting screen helps for a while, soft-reset helps for a while. Sometimes it goes away without doing anything special. Did HTC finally answer your E-Mail?
I'd like to have this fixed as soon as possible.
Edit: I noticed that this problem disappears at once if TF3D is deactivated. Let'S see about that....
Hi,
even though there are probably several other threads concerning this issue, this seems to be the most recent one.
Do you use a (genuine?) screen protector?
I do.
I suppose this problem is caused by the tremendous heat* when the device is used and a screen protector that had been applied wrongly.
I might have applied the screen protector wrongly so there are a few very small (almost invisible?) bubbles (i.e. hot air expands(?) - I don't know the technical term),
since I had to remove the screen protector once because of dust..(does the glue lose its stickiness?)
I don't know if it's because of the bubbles, but I'm quite sure it's because of the screen protector.
Has anyone noticed this behavior without using a screen protector?
(I'm going to buy new screen protectors if neccessary, but I don't want to pay ~25€ if it's not)
*= I've adjusted my screen when my device was "cold".
Edit: I've probably found the reason for this issue: there's a deformation (caused by HTC) on the bottom of the screen(at the end of the screen protector) - there's a hole without glue (but air) - everything works fine while closing the hole by pressing the screen protector on the surface of the device.
I'm going to upload a picture later.
Edit2: The picture is now online. The fact that there's a hole isn't new of course, but no one seems to have linked these two issues so far.
(Correct me if I'm wrong)
The hole wasn't that big first but it grew because of all the testing
I've cut the lower part of the screen protector off now until I have a new one, although it doesn't look that great anymore..
Edit3: Ok, it's the hole and not the screen protector - I guess I have to get a new Diamond from my provider since it's a manufacturing defect..

Huawei P9 thinks the smart flip case is always on.

Hi not many posts as always been a lurker. I recently changed 2 lcd's on 2 different phones. 1st one went fine, but the second on is just showing as if it has a smart case on it at all times meaning cant access the phones features. Tried a couple of troubleshooting steps but still no avail.
1. Different LCD on phone - still same fault
2. Removed proximity sensor - still same fault
3. tried darkening proximity let through on the glass - still same fault
4. Factory reset and cleared cache - still same fault
The customer did say this was playing up once she had broken the screen but though id tap into you experts knowledge to see if you had come across this before or what could i do to remedies this.
If i posted in wrong area appologies please advise where to post!
Many Thanks
Eddie
As far as I know, it senses magnetic fields in order to determine whether the cover is on or not.
I wouldn't think the magnetic sensor is in the screen, which it also doesn't appear to be.
I would look into troubleshooting there instead. Maybe try "resetting" it by putting a strong magnet to it? At your own risk, of course, though I wouldn't expect much to happen.
Replacing the sensor might be the only way out, and it's probably soldered to the board.
Foscot thanks for your reply, will look into this and see if i can get some results. Will post to confirm.

Hi Foscot, a few updates, i noticed the liquid indicator is red so it seems that some damaged must of been caused there, mostly at the bottom of the handset. I cleaned with alcohol and the handset come to light and was working with full screen but then went back to its flip case state. i am thinking maybe changing the sub pba (if i can find one)
Thanks for your help
Will post updates.

Makes a lot of sense. Water shorted out the magnetic field sensor, which has caused it to always sense the flip case. New PBA is likely the only fix.
Make sure to keep me updated, it's quite interesting

Hi. Interesting post. Can you tell me which part of the phone you cleaned with alcohol? Have the same problem with my p9 plus which thinks the flip case is on. Disassembled much of the phone and tried to clean it with paper and alcohohol but with no result. Also tried putting a magnet near the phone.
Update. Disassembled the phone and cleaned all the parts on the lower side of the phone including the board and now it works again.

Xiaomi MI5 - Randomly unresponsive touchscreen

Hello guys, so I recently received an MI5 I ordered on Gearbest, in the 64gb international version (MIUI Global 8.2.2.0).
From day one, the touchscreen had the bad habit of going unresponsive randomly, meaning i have to struggle to swipe/click. Using hard keys (home, power) somehow fixes the issue for a few minutes but that's all. I unlocked the bootloader with Mi Unlock, and tried the latest build of LineageOS, and even flashed next the latest MIUI international developper build (29/06). On all of these 3 ROMs, the issue persists (and I went full wipe each time).
At the phone start, it is generally OK for a bunch of minutes, and then randomly becomes unresponsive.
I searched on the internet and did not find fixes, and i'm still unsure whether it's software or hardware related, even though I fear its the second option.
Would any of you have any more information on this subject?
To rule out any possible software issues, I'd flash the latest stable ROM.
Give that a shot and then see if the problem persists.
Well, the phone came new with the latest MIUI Global ROM (8.2.2.0), and since first start the problem was here. In the beginning I thought that it was just the phone lagging while setting up, but as time passed it was still there, no matter which ROM I flashed.
So, is there a potential software fix, or is this an hardware issue?
I am having the same issue, i hope its not hardware related :/

Unfortunately, I'm starting to think it is, considering what I found on the internet. I'm kinda deceived by Xiaomi, which I thought was great value for the price. There is not even an official statement about this, even though many users reported the issue.

Sadly thats the problem with Chinese phones, some of us that will face this problem's have no protection,we cant return the phone and get a new one,its better for us just to buy a new screen off aliexpress for 20euros than to wait 2 month's to ship it back and wait for it to be fixed and then returned and you pay the shipping costs and also the repair costs, but thats the risk we accept when we want the best bang for the buck.
Also poor quality control on the products to cut the costs is the real reason behind the problems we face

Hi, I indeed tried this solution, even thought it worked for a few hours.. But it came back soon enough
Guys, hello! I have a good news for you,i hope so. Ok. 1st of all I defeated the error with the screen off.
Here is my story.
I just wanted a black mi5. After some time found on ebay. I bought it, he arrived, after two days the touchscreen stopped working absolutely randomly.
The seller said that everything will do. I sent, he did nothing! Sent me. It all happened twice. Exactly twice I sent my mi5 from Russia to China! I read all the messages and tried everything. Nothing helped.
That's what I tried and that does not exactly work.
1. It does not depend on the version of miui or linegeOS.
2.This does not depend on time.
3.This does not depend on temperature.
I experimented, heated it, lay in the refrigerator. I clicked on the screen / body.
In the end, I understood the reason-static electricity.
HOW TO FIX IT!
1.Remove the back cover.
2. Twist the screws in the center and bottom, possibly a pair on the right side.
3. Try so far without the lid closed.
4.If the screen stops responding, try unscrewing the other screws.
5.Repeat, until you find the right combination and the touchscreen will work constantly.
Guys, I really helped it.
I hope this also solves your problem with the screen. Good luck!

Hi Guys, I hope my solution helps to solve your problem. It is definitely about the screws. For me, I have found out that one screw is very slightly thinner than the others (of course the one with warranty stick should go to the centre and there is one silver metal going top left). This thinner screw should go up middle. That worked for me.
Does the screws trick work on your phone? Plz tell me.

3. Try so far without the lid closed.
4.If the screen stops responding, try unscrewing the other screws.
5.Repeat, until you find the right combination and the touchscreen will work constantly.
Guys, I really helped it.
I hope this also solves your problem with the screen. Good luck!

Thank you, you saved my Gemini :good:
Doesn't work for me. I tried with all screws.
Sent from my MI 5 using Tapatalk
screw solution works !!
I tried this solution with Redmi 2 and its the exact same screw which is the problem ie the screw right in the middle of the phone.
i loosed it slightly and now no more screen freezes. :good:
Hi I'm attaching an image with the screws numbered.

It would be nice if you post which numbers have you tried.

Hey guys, thanks to Griha3212 I found out on my Mi 5 it's the screw in the top middle part of the phone, the one with warranty sticker. Just loosen it a bit. It works fine after I loosen it. Tried tightening it too and the problem came back.

Did you mean that, when loosen it, the problem dissapears immediately without rebooting? Because I've tried it and it does not work immediately.

I think your explaination is a little bit confusing. Did you mean that the thinner screw (the number 1 on the image attached) has to be swapped with the number 2? Or with the one with the warranty (number 5)?
Please if any other one found a combination that works, post it using the numbers of my attachment as reference. I have been tried several combinations amd no one seem to work.

Screen Flickering

Hey guys
I have a very strange problem with my Huawei P10
About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that two purple horizontal stripes are appearing in a 3-4sec sequence
Normally, I would immediately ask for a repair, but there's a thing which persecutes me: it only happens when I don't touch the screen for longer than 3-4sec
When there's a continuous contact with the screen (e.g when writing a message) nothing happens, everything is fine and dandy, but whenever I leave the screen for itself for 3 or more seconds (e.g when watching a movie), the stripes start to appear every few seconds, and continue until the screen goes dark or until I touch it again, but after touching it it still takes only a few seconds for the stripes to sequentially flicker again
Here's what I've tried so far (no result):
- safe mode
- factory reset
- cache partition wiping
- cord input deep clean
What may be the reason?
Hey.
It's 100% a board or Display issue. send it for repairs. but i believe maybe you've dropped ur phone. Anyways Huawei knows better.

It's quite complicated
I once dropped it, but even after that, the previous LCD worked fine, there were no errors other than broken glass, so I guess we could exclude a board issue and lean toward your second option, as now that the LCD has been replaced, the fault occurs
What's more, I noticed that if I press the Home Key, and then put my finger in the bottom right corner and hold it, I can still use the whole LCD space without the flickering (I need to press the Home Key first so that it works after I hold my finger in the corner)
It's like the LCD needs to be in contact with your finger all the time to avoid that, which has led me to an idea: would a tempered glass solve that maybe?

I can't really answer for sure but i believe if there's a Huawei service center in your city and you try to fix ur broken huawei, your wasting your time. Whatever solution u apply on ur phone its just gonna be temporary since u hide your problem and not solved it.

I still think (or should I say believe ) that there's a solution which doesn't involve another screen replacement
As for your "temporary solution" mention, I guess if I found one, it wouldn't be temporary, since the fault doesn't progress, it's been the same for a month or so when it first occured, which gives me another reason not to replace the screen and keep looking for other possibilities
I don't need a Huawei service center, I can replace the LCD myself (didn't do that the first time though), but it still involves spending money, whereas I've been looking for unpaid solutions the whole time; getting a new LCD is an extremity

You can ask them to diagnose it and tell you about problem noone makes you pay for a lcd. And after reading your message over and over (And since i repair TVs and everything with electronics inside) i think it also can be your touch or display controller ic. Mostly it could be from touch ic since screen works fine while its in touch with something. But someone has to try your lcd or mb on a healthy one to make sure. which you can't do nothing like that. or do you?
@fengels did You bought original lcd, where can I buy it in good price?
I know this problem from older galaxy series like s5. The fix for this most of the time was disable auto brightness or higher the brightness on auto brightness. Don't know if this is the same problem, but it could be a try. Also don't know which cause this strange problem. Hope it can help you

No, it's a different problem, in the galaxy series the whole screen would flicker, whereas in my P10 it's only 2 horizontal stripes appearing in a 4-5 sec sequence whenever I leave the screen untouched for longer than 5sec
Playing around with the brightness doesn't solve that unfortunately, actually no in-device settings do, as I've tried almost every single option which is screen-related, like switching the eye comfort mode on, but still no result
The main reason why I'm still looking for an unpaid solution is that apart from this one error, the phone is like brand new, everything works fine
ok, so if I understad the problem shows up after you replaced the LCD display? So do you really think is more software related than hardware? I personally would send it to diagnose and repair.

The thing is it didn't show up immediately, I had used the phone for some time with no errors before it first occured
Also, since the new LCD was set, I haven't done any physical damage to it, I've never dropped or sunk the phone
Since you guys mostly advise me to send it, I guess that's what I will have to do

While you were replacing screen, did you turn your device off and disconnect the battery? and i think cleaning all cables coming from LCD and related sockets on motherboard can help. Use thinner or alcohol and if you wanna use thinner be careful so it wouldn't touch anything except golden contacts. Thinner is dangerous and affects ur phone color and plastic parts.

I did turn the device off, but I didn't take the battery off, since it's strongly glued to the phone's body, and I didn't want to damage it
Anyway, could not taking the battery off really be the reason?
As for cleaning, I did it by simply blowing out all the potential dirt, I'm inexperienced in thinner and alcohol cleaning

I am not sure butbon some phones it damages screen. I've seen this on laptops. But anyways its done. Open ur phone and use alcohol. put 2 drops of alcohol on each socket and flat cable connectors and brush it with a soft brush. u don't want to bent any golden contact. It's last thing u can do to fix it without paying for hardware related stuff.

Well, will definitely try it then, but what alcohol? Does it need to be something specific?
