[UPDATED] Looks like VZW will be supporting Samsung Pay after all (source).
From sammobile.com:
Verizon confirms Samsung Pay support
Samsung Pay was launched in the United States last month, the payments service requires carrier support to work and naturally it raised a few eyebrows when it was confirmed that Verizon will not be supporting the service at launch. This means that Verizon users are unable to use Samsung Pay on their carrier-branded devices, even though it’s the largest mobile carrier in the country, it was hinted recently that Verizon might confirm supporting the new service soon and now the company has sent out a tweet through its official account confirming just that.
Verizon has confirmed that it’s going to support Samsung Pay on compatible smartphones which include the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5. The carrier says that it’ll flip the switch on the service through a future software update but doesn’t say precisely when the software update will be released. At least Verizon users now know that their carrier will allow them to use Samsung’s new payment service at some point.
Verizon News (@VerizonNews) October 6, 2015: "Samsung Pay will be supported on compatible Verizon smartphones (Galaxy S 6, S 6 edge, Note5, S6 edge +) through a future software update."
Verizon is ruining everything, bootloaders are hard to unlock and they are on top of closing out root for each OTA. I am contemplating on switching to nexus or moto pure phones since they will be unlockable.
ONly reason why I am keeping Verizon is because I have unlimited data and their service is very good where I live. T Mobile is non existent.
I've been worried about this but Droid Life got a statement from Verizon and they're just still evaluating it. They've got a month to sign off on it and they don't have a competing app anymore so they really have no reason not to support is (other than the fact that they're a bunch of a**holes).

I totally agree that that is the only reason.
Verizon gains nothing from removing this feature (or any other feature for that matter).
Completely pointless. It makes no bloody sense!

You say that Verizon makes unlocking the bootloader hard.
This really does not sound like a big deal.
According to Google, an unlocked bootloader IS a security issue for the device.
Similarly, while root is fun to have, it is obtained by exploiting a security flaw,
and since only ~5% of users care about root, carriers and manufacturers kill root.
That said, MOST of Verizons corporate decisions are NOT consumer friendly.
I just hope that we can get Samsung pay somehow, perhaps with root and a root cloak like thing.

Same for me. I would not have bought the edge had I known Verizon would eliminate some of its selling points. Makes me want to switch carriers.

But Samsung Pay was one of the big selling points of the handset.
Even though it is a feature you don't seem to care about,
for many of us, myself included, it is disheartening to hear this.
Verizon really has no reason to remove it. This angers many.

Android Pay is nowhere near as good as Samsung Pay because a place still has to have NFC. Samsung Pay can be used almost anywhere. That's a huge advantage

Do you have root?
I know that Samsung Pay does not work with rooted devices; same as Android Pay.

Subject says (asks) it all. I'm wondering how many of you are actually going for the T-Mobile variant just to get the unlocked bootloader. History tells me there will probably be some kind of root exploit for the AT&T model in the not-so-distant future, but I also only have about 12 days to return mine to AT&T and I'm not fond of how locked down it is currently.
Also, those of you who actually bought one from T-Mobile: How did you do it? I can't seem to do it online without adding a month of service and I'm wondering if they'll even sell me one in a store if I don't have an account with them.
I got one, went into a store and bought it outright, used cellunlocker.net to sim unlock, then rooted, recovery, custom rom.
No thanks -- I'll keep my AT&T model. I don't care about custom roms, only want root...which will happen soon enough. I used to wait anywhere from 3-6 months for an iPhone jailbreak, so this waiting game doesn't phase me. Besides, you can do much more than the iPhone even without root, so I'm a happy camper.

Yeah, I just want to root to block ads and tether. I don't care about custom roms, but the way this thing is locked down, it seems like root will be a long time coming, if at all.
To answer the OP question. I am waiting for the T-Mobile 32Gb S5. If they do get it then I have another choice to decide, stay with ATT or make the move fully to T-Mobile. I am DONE buying ATT locked bootloader phones.
I love HAVING A CHOICE of Roms, flashing kernels flashing modems, making and flashing themes, or ANYTHING I want to do with MY PHONE

This. I may or may not pick up the T-Mobile S5 off contract either tonight or maybe sometime this week. Only thing is the high price. Spending $700+ on a Samsung doesn't sit that well with me for some reason, despite doing it the past without giving it a second thought.
But yea, no more AT&T devices. I'm not supporting their horrible business tactics anymore. Locking phones down like that is horrible. These Samsung phones NEED root and custom roms because they are not great out of the box. PERIOD.

I'm in the same boat. I have till Thursday to return my ATT S5. I think I'm definitely going to get a TMO device but I can't decide if I can switch to TMO. Looking at their coverage maps they definitely don't have the coverage area AT&T has but they also appear to be a tiny bit cheaper than AT&T even with the corporate discount.

Might as well do it while you can, because even T-mobile will be locking their bootloaders soon as well. Every major US carrier will have locked bootloaders from now on. It'll be up to the phone manufacturers to provide an unlock or not, similar to what HTC does.

Just common sense. Every major carrier already locks every devices bootloader. The only exception is T-Mobile, only because they want to grab as many customers as they can. That's also why they kept the download booster, while every other major US carrier disabled it. They're standing out from the crowd looking to scoop up the on-the-fence people...and it's working, for the most part.
It's obvious they'll be forced to step in line with other carriers soon. You can have the wishful thinking they won't...but it'll just be wishful thinking, unfortunately.

I disagree. In the world, the only two carriers who locked theirs are Verizon and AT&T. AT&T has locked their RAT lock for a while now (not allowing you to change bands/technologies) and I think this is the next evolution of control.
For T-mobile, they have never locked their RAT or their boot loaders. So it's not a ploy to grab customers
Ordered my T-Mobile SM-G900T in black this morning. Yeah, I paid $700 for it on eBay, unlocked, from a reputable seller. Buying outright here in NJ would have been $702 (unless I went to Vineland where it's 3.5% tax it would have been $681) so I just went on eBay and got it.
I bought my AT&T SGS5 outright (through the financing, but it's still considered outright) but hopefully I can sell it and make up part of the loss of needing to "upgrade" to the T-Mobile version.
Well, here's my reasoning: I'm plain unhappy with the SGS5 I have now. I would rather have my SGS3 back. The level of customization and non-touchwiz elements used before actually made both play and practical day to day usage of the phone way better on the SGS3. I can't stand being stuck using the phone as if I'm a n00b who's never seen a smartphone before. I do like the new screen, and it's not that much bigger (I had a beast Body Glove on the S3 so it was pretty much the same size as the S5 with the Spigen Neo Hybrid haha).
So... Considering I was happy with the SGS3 for nearly 2 years, and now would STILL BE HAPPIER WITH THE SGS3 THAN THE SGS5 NOW, I figure it's worth paying a few extra bucks to actually have 2+ years of enjoyable use out of the phone.
My only next obstacle is selling the one I have now.. freakin brand new with skinomi screen protector (best job I ever did putting a wet protector on lol) from day 1. Oh well, totally worth it for me.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I like the phone. Not quite as smooth as my nexus 5, but pretty good, and who knows when we'll get the next Android update.
Really like the gear 2 neo that I bought at the same time, and unless I want to wait for another smart watch and go back to the nexus, then I will stay with this.
Don't want to pay full price for a T-Mobile version, so I might just deal with no root and a locked bootloader.
The screen is absolutely the best phone screen I've ever used, and it would be hard to go back to the nexus after using this just because of the screen.

Anybody come across any info regarding what Verizon can/will do to lock down the Nexus 6? Also, if I purchase an unbranded Nexus directly from Google and take it to Verizon for service, do I have to let them put any bloat or do anything to lock my phone down? I really like the Nexus 6 and since a OPO is out of the question, being on Verizon, the N6 is most appealing to me. I have an S4 and really like it but I'm ready to move on from Sammy.

I don't think Verizon can add anything to it. If by some corrupt chance they are, they cannot do anything to you if you bring your own device.
US carriers have asinine power. But, you should be safe either way.

I can't say anything about the nexus 6, but I can say that I bought the Galaxy Nexus on release date for Verizon they had it loaded with ISIS ( locked from using Wallet ) and My Verizon app, both of which without rooting you couldn't remove, just disable. So they WILL probably install their Softcard NFC paying app ( New name for ISIS, for obvious reasons ) and their in house Verizon apps they install on the rest of their phones. I just want the phone to come out through them. I'm locked to them due to employer, but I get discounts on phones through them too, so I'm gonna wait it out just a little bit.

I'm more worried about when they are going to release it. Artem from android police said he's heard from the beginning that Verizon would lag behind all carriers with their release, and that it may even be in 2015. Along with all the mysterious things like google leaving out verizon on some of the page updates I'm starting to wonder if it is true.
Even if they did modify it in any fashion, I doubt any of the hardware is changed. Download the Nexus Factory Image, unlock the bootloader, and flash it. Instant stock/unmodified Nexus 6.
If purchased from the Play Store, I really don't think there's anything Verizon can do to muck up the phone when you activate it. Can't imagine there's any protocol in place for the phone to become "locked down" or anything when it gets activated on Verizon. At worst, I've heard some rumors that Lollipop has a function that can allow carrier-specific apps to be downloaded right away from the Play Store when it's activated on a particular carrier service, but that said apps could still be removed like any other.
From the looks of things, Play Store Nexus 6 devices should work just fine when you pop in a Verizon SIM card. Now, for those wanting to get a subsidized version of the phone, yeah, you might have to wait a bit longer for Verizon to sell it. It's a little odd to me that Verizon is seemingly opting to wait to sell it, themselves, compared to everyone else, but from what we've seen, the phone does, in fact, work on their network, so if you're willing to spend the extra cash on the Play Store version (or, if you're like me, stuck on a contract for several more months and HAVING to pay full retail price anyway), that might be the way to go.
I was lucky enough to get my pre order through the Play Store yesterday and immediately went and asked in Google's Nexus Q&A if Verizon support was going to work out of box... Ive attached a screenie.
It's a Nexus. It won't be locked down. It may come with some bloat but easily removed. If by some infinitesimal chance they do have it locked down, well I'm on month to month so bye - bye Verizon.
If you aren't going to root & rom, what the hell is the point of buying a Nexus anyway?

I dunno man, reddit is suspect IMO and I was under the impression Verizon had already approved the Nexus 6 for their network. I doubt the reddit post is reliable though I suppose it might be. I think I read on the Nexus 6 was on the approved list on the Verizon website, a customer service rep said it was, though I could have read it somewhere else.

Playstore for sure, as for T mobile I don't know.
There is a Verizon store next to my gym so I went in there tonight to ask some questions. While the guy did not know anymore then I did about when the N6 would be available through Verizon, he did confirm that purchasing one through the Play Store and mayyybbbeee even through T Mobile and just bringing it in for service wouldn't be a problem.

I don't think many people question whether the Nexus 6 will work on Verizon's network. I think those with the Verizon questions (such as myself) are looking to get the phone on contract. My Verizon contract is up Nov 21st and I'd love to get a stock Nexus 6 on contract with no bloatware. If I can't do that I'll probably look closer at the Droid Turbo or wait a little while longer on getting a new phone. Hate to wait too long though on the phone subsidy model.
Everyone should file a complaint with the FCC #fccstopatt for discrimination. Apple gets updates right away but Samsung doesn't!
Updates aren't guaranteed for our devices, it is a courtesy of Samsung and At$t.
First off Samsung is Android and Apple is iOS. Apple push updates to their phones right away cos they do their own firmware since they are iOS. Samsung and ATT are completely different. All android devices are allowed updates after it has been run through the Nexus series since they are Google devices. After that other companies are allowed access to it like Samsung and carriers like ATT. Samsung phones get these updates earlier but carriers dont put them out straight away since they have to incorporate such updates into their own carrier firmware and make them compatible with carrier apps and bloatware. So thats the problem with carriers like ATT that have variant (non international) devices made just for them. If its to hard to do or has bugs then it takes a while to fix them or sometimes not even worth it.
If you want quick updates then spend the extra money and get an international device or a Nexus. Carrier and variant devices are the worst. Over bloated and locked bootloaders.
Also no one is obligated by law to update their device. Company or carrier its up to them.

Seriously though, it's a game that we freely chose to play. I don't know why anyone is surprised by AT&T's actions. You get a Samsung phone and you know the bootloader is going to cause some problems... You want updates? Get a phone that is easy to flash custom roms. I was tired of waiting so I got a OnePlus One... Now I am on easy street until the GS5 gets the lollipop update.

Samsung has pushed updates to the S5 including the G900A to carriers. AT&T has not yet (to the best of our knowledge) finished their prep and tests. Don't blame Samsung for something it already has completed. They can tell AT&T to push an update all they want, but ultimately the update for our device is up to AT&T.
There is nothing the FCC can do either. The device works properly and complies with the FCC regulations.
Yes, I want Lollipop too. But I can only wait until it comes out or until I can buy an unlocked devices.

First off Samsung gets updates usually within a month or two of Google release of OS versions. However those are the international versions of the phones. US carriers are always last because of all the bloat and in AT&T's case being able to open the phone to install the OTA and then locking it down tight again. So who is your complaint really against? Slow AT&T is slow! Now your complaint will fall on deaf ears because updates are not guaranteed nor in your TOS or contract. The one thing you DO get out of this is knowledge...knowledge that this is how it is with AT&T and realize you have choices in carriers. The less than 1% of their buyers on XDA will not even hurt their bottom line enough for them to notice if no one here bought from them again. And how does any of this concern the FCC? They are responsible to clear the phone for release...period.

Vote with your dollars. If you don't like Samsung using an encrypted boot loader, don't buy the S6. If you don't like how ATT releases the worst software with the worst delay in the industry, then buy an unlocked GSM phone.
Sadly it isn't really Samsung who "wants" to lock the bootloaders on their phones. It's the Carriers who force them to lock the bootloaders. If it was the case that Samsung wanted to lock them down then every single Samsung phone on the Market regardless as to what carrier or where would have locked down bootloaders, which isn't the case. So if you want to do something about it stop buying cellphones from the carriers who have locked bootloaders, aka get an international phone if you can or switch carriers. Currently I think the only one who doesn't lock the bootloaders (correct me if I am wrong) is T-Mobile.
Or as others suggested get a different brand.
Could you direct me go an article or something that explains why guessing the unlock key is so hard. Couldn't we setup some brute force code generator to try to find the unlock key?

Maybe it is like 512 bit and would take 1 million years of attempts

Just read up on encryption. That's the problem. If encryption was so easy to crack, then none of our online transactions would ever be safe.
this thread made me lol
Sent from my SM-G900V using XDA Free mobile app
I will start by saying i know that this has been done and that Samsung will never listen to us or that simply doesn't care but
I have started a campaign on Twitter i will write a request directed at Samsung Mobile and Samsung Mobile USA everyday until they block me or something else happens.
If you don't agree with me its really ok and i see your reasoning, but the purpose of this threat is to attach it on the Twitter request.
So i would like to invite you to join my request just by writing down on the thread with capital letters "UNLOCK OUR DEVICE"
For those who don't agree with me I would like that you don't write it here lets keep this thread clean and focused.
Let's hope that by doing the same thing we get different results.
Here is the link of the tweet i will be writing everyday:
https://twitter.com/Shkrepsja/status/1141086683770818562?s=19
Feel free to retweet it or disagree with me there
Thank you!:highfive:
They don't care. Only ones who they will listen to are the service providers and Verizon will tell them to lock it down even more

Its been done. It won't change anything until the provider tells them to. It's locked because of them. And they won't unlock it because you can just run features they charge for for free. It makes no sense for them to unlock it. People are going to keep buying the devices reguardless.

I don't why only Samsung does that man some say that is because of the carriers but i don't think saw because if you think about it OnePlus have a unlock bootloader. What does that mean OnePlus has bigger balls then Samsung?

Probably. Even the T-Mobile version has one once you pay it off. That's most likely gonna be my next phone.

I totally agree man. It's a damn shame really. My first Note was the Note 5 straight from T-Mobile it had an unlocked bootloader. That was January 2016. I guess some laws changed since then? I don't know.

No "law" has changed. Just company policy. If there was a "law" that changed, people wouldn't be able to unlock other phones, like OnePlus phones that are sold through T-Mobile. I unlocked my OnePlus 7 Pro easily. This locked bootloader BS is from Samsung and/or Qualcomm and/or T-Mobile policy.

Include John Legere(?) Or however his name is spelt. The CEO of TMobile. I remember on the Note 5 someone tweeted him about a bootloader unlock and he tweeted Samsung. Lol. Wait, that might have been the Note 8. I don't remember, but tweet him either way.
but....you can already unlock the bootloader. just not on north american carrier models.
( strangely in south america and China the same SOC (snapdragon) can be unlocked. and of course the exynos model too...i wonder why... how can it be that the reset of the WHOLE PLANET HAS UNLOCKABLE BOOTLAODERS...lol ..i really wonder why.....
but seriously its prety obvious to me)
that's 'merican freedom for ya.( lol funny how a communist country has better rights in certain aspects of life)
so do the logical thing, read up on the subject and petition the carriers instead ( they are the true culprits obviously). ( while ure at it petition all that is bad about em like price of contracts and such)
as it stands OPs 'efforts' are a big waste of time.

Idk man but i don't think that the carrier's are to blame Samsung makes the devices and should have the ball to say this my device if you want you sell it as it is. You see iPhone's, pixels onepluses etc with no bloatware and unlocked bootloader and the biggest smartphone manufacturer has bloats and no unlocked bootloader
SAMSUNG SERIOUSLY STEP UP AND BE A MAN GROW A PAIR OF BALLS

well the n960u1 firmware has no bloat...
and the iphone is locked tighter than... lol i wont go there.
its the carriers trust me. they require samsung to put the bloat as part of the deal. its in the contract they have with samsung and they require them to locked it down and bloat it up. samsung won't make 2 phones available for a region. they produce the hardware and slap on the csc and other crap. thats why the U1 is bloatless( sammy bought device directly) but locked because its a requirement by the providers because that device will end up on an north America provider. it represents millions of dollars if not more to get these devices onto the market and into shady carrier plans. why would samsung refuse this business/contract? i mean if someone gives me 20 000$ to piss in some one's porch, as morally wrong rhat may be, id probaly do it because we're all in the money making business unfortunately.
again this practice of not allowing a bootloader to be unlocked is very different for the rest of the world. i reiterate, apart from north america, every single device samsung produces for the planet can get their bootloader unlocked.
isint that proof enough ?
id take it up with the carriers and ure state law office instead.
again, samsung is only producing fones in accordance with the carrier's ruling. its like buying a car second hand and the original owner payed extra for some stupid spoiler or something and you as the 3nd party goes back to the dealership and blames the dealer for it... they just abide to the order.
moreover, i wouldint be surprised the united states fcc and carriers have some sort of agreement that is not public or you have to be a lawyer to read the fine print and hundreds of pages that stipulates why the device's bootloader is not allowed to be unlocked. its politics and money related for sure.
are you surpised? that's 'merica for ya.
anyways ill say it again. people should just stop buing NA devices.
also here is proof that its the providers:
alot of them wont allow you to use advanced csc features like wifi calling and volte on 'greymarket' devices. they even made up a term for it because they didnt get a piece of the pie when u buy a device that is not carrier bought ie: international version.
when u buy a car second hand or that is from an other country, does the state roads bureau say no you cant drive it? or no you cant modify it? of course not. you pay taxes and have a permit that enables you to drive it.
so by paying good money monthly to have a line and data plan, they should be doing these shady practices that the rest of the world dont do.
businesses own America.(and canada)
What's the point considering how difficult they make it even with s10 series exynos. Think I might get off the Sammy train next, as I require root for all my devices and note 10 exynos will be just as difficult as s10 series is at this point, with virtually no development.

i get where ure coming from.
but unlocking the BL is but half of the task. but i mean we're just the users using what ever means other people find and develop to gain root access. how hard or how skillful these people that are developping and contributing to get recovery and root this time around i dont know. The ease at which the s7, s8...etc were overcome by, may be a pure fluke. maybe there is just less intrest for doing so on these devices than before. with all the new companies, there are no longer the top 3 manufactures that made it more likely that people would choose samsung to develop on.
but if I'm not mistaken the problem or should i say difficulty with the s10 is the recovery and the handoff/subsequent boot process to homescreen. purely speaking about root, i think top john woo came up with the method prety quickly. but as someone that likes flashing roms and zips, recovery is a very big part of the root/recovery double edged sword. but as anything else, since the methods have changed abit, there are always things to overcome at first. what is not bad about this scenario is that the s10 helped bring those hurdles months ago to light and i think that this will help speed up things for the note 10(compared to the s10). but all in all it does slow things down regarding development, that i agree. but ireally think thats because the interest of devs and the fact that the market is being flooded by:
more different models and sub models and more phone companies than before, thus diluting the dev base in more fractionated parties... and ive heard also people saying that they dont even feel the need to root and all that comes with it anymore. for me though, lol that's not the case.
anyways, i guess we'll see when we get there...( august ? lol)
As i said it's not that i disagree but we must do our part
At least i will and lets hope we achieve something
With the 3's and 3a's on T-Mobile, I am almost certain they will; but I have not heard/seen anything official. Hoping someone with some inside knowledge can confirm or deny.
Really hoping they don't go back to "exclusive", or wait until the 4a comes out to sell it on other carriers.
Their contract ended with Verizon so it would be very unwise of Google to limit the carriers it sells its devices on.
I highly doubt they'd renew a partnership given how successful the Pixel has been lately, and their move to sell the Pixel 3a at other carriers highly suggests that their premium devices will follow the same trend
If that isn't enough confirmation then I don't know what is. Their exclusivity with Verizon was initially a great thing to get things rolling, but with each iteration of the Pixel following that, it's really done more harm than good.
And with them supposedly talking to D ish about establishing their own full fledged carrier it seems even less likely that they wouldn't embrace other carriers too given that their new carrier would literally use TMobile and Sprint towers to comply with the 4 carrier requirement needed for a Sprint and TMobile merger.
So no, I don't have any direct information to state otherwise, but on a financial level it would be awful of Google to not endorse other carriers.
Honestly, what I'm more interested in is knowing how they plan to support Verizon's standard for 5g while complying with the others as it vastly differs... Or better yet, if it will support 5g at all
Doubts and hopes are what I started with, mate. I am well aware of the history behind the deals and partnerships.
Looking for confirmation from an inside source.

I spoke to my friend at T-MOBILE and she confirmed that they will in fact be selling the 4.
It's not like it really matters since Google sells it direct anyways. Even if it was available from my carrier (AT&T in my case) I'd still buy it from Google so the carrier can't get its hands on it.
I would never buy it from a carrier. They will lock the bootloader and no root for you! Just look at the forums for the recent pixel 3a/3axl. Even if you don't plan on rooting now, it's nice to know you at least have the option should you choose to. You can also finance through Google.
The OnePlus devices may be instructive: These had bootloaders which could be unlocked after they were sim unlocked. The timing for sim unlock depended on how good a customer you were in some cases but primarily was based on having the device paid off. The smarter money if no deals were involved was simply buying from OnePlus direct because the updates are significantly faster. I would expect something similar here if it is indeed sold by Tmo.

Well, if it's fully paid for, I don't see why they won't let you unlock it. Unless you're going for a plan, which is completely understandable. Not everyone has a grand to drop at one time. But at the same time, you can't really gripe if they don't let you unlock a device you haven't fully paid for.
