So new... and so lost. Please help! - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have extensive PC knowledge and have been in the computer repair industry for years. I do not, however, have hardly any experience with Android devices beyond daily use.
I purchased a used Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900A (AT&T), which was previously unlocked. The phone is now under service with MetroPCS.
When I first boot by phone, it shows a quick screen with a picture of a padlock, which is UNLOCKED, and the word "Custom."
So, I was reading up on Cyanogenmod, but everything that I can find about it says that it is unable to be used with the AT&T version of the phone. I was going to follow this guide a guide from the CM wiki page but as you can see it says that I shouldn't try.
Most of the info I found was from early or mid 2014. Now that it is nearing the end of 2015, has anything changed?
If I cannot use CM, what ROM would you all recommend? My main reasons for installing a ROM are:
-A Spartan design. I like everything very clean, very minimalistic, with no fuss.
-Saving battery life
-Getting rid of all the bloatware and AT&T **** on my phone which doesn't even work because I'm on MetroPCS
-Customization (does this have to even be listed?)
-Phone as a hotspot without paying MetroPCS $5 a month
I am basically a complete noob when it comes to Android modding. I rooted an old Avid ZTE I had, but never did anything else with it and that is as far as my knowledge goes.
If anyone would be so kind as to recommend a ROM, and link a guide for installation that I can follow, I would be very grateful. Who knows, I might end up becoming a regular poster here.

Boot loader is still locked so no roms that require a custom kernel.
I personally recommend you to root your phone, disable bloat and install nova launcher.
Most all roms are simply user hacks since we are stuck on touchwiz.
Some are quite good but in the end they are still stock based.

T-Mobile Note... Use ATT ROM/root?

So my buddy got a note from T-Mobile and I wanted to know, after viewing specs, won't the ATT roms and root methods work seamless since they seem to be the same exact phone?
We are not first time rooters or ROM users. But, how big of a risk would it be to try and use the ATT root method on T-Mobile Note?

My guess...strictly a mildly informed guess is, that is you rooted the phone, did a nandroid backup and flashed a rom, everything would work except data, as they have different radios.
Don't try it because I said so, try it in the name of science. LOL (actually, I wouldn't do it)

Well I flashed the t-mo rom onto my att note and it works. also the data works too as it was using another t-mo radio i flashed in there before the flashed the rom, so it should work. but who knows.
But are they not the same phone with different radios? I mean theoretically same buttons and hardware means same "id's" for those buttons in the ROM for ATT. Like how Keys on a keyboard have special numbering, etc. How all hardware buttons function, really.
So why would an ATT ROM and root brick the phone?

Actually, the T-mobile rom runs fine on the AT&T Note, but CM9/CM10 does not run on the T-Mobile Note. Theres a difference in the displays, it's all corrupted during boot and then it finally reboots into a loop. I almost got CM9 to boot, saw it updating apps, but then it crashed.
The hardware is different!

I think we can flash touch wiz based ROMs on our T-Mobile notes, can we not?
T-mobile Note Roms
I'm not about to try to flash a ATT ROM on my new phone. So...where is a place to find ROMS for the T-mobile Note? Anyone have any Ideas? I'm looking for the Newest Touch Wiz and S-Voice to put on my note. Any help would be welcomed.

Since this phone has only been out a week, you will have a little bit of a wait.
from what i've seen it is safe to flash ATT roms they just don't boot.
I flashed about 3 different roms from the i717 threads using twrp 2.2.1 and they all boot loop at the samsung logo.
restoring my t-mo backup worked fine. so there really is no danger, just a boot looping issue.
You need to flash the T-mobile boot.img to get other roms to work on the T879. Check the "Goodies" dev thread made an odin flashable tarball that you make it easy to get up and running.
May post a guide later.

I don't own a Galaxy Note, but I'm considering picking one up this week, and I was just taking a look at the forums for it. The first step toward getting a nice development section is going to be finding a user experienced in porting roms. I would say if someone doesn't start this in the next couple of weeks, maybe it would be beneficial to you guys to find someone who is good with porting, ask them for advice & possibly even start a bounty to get them a Tmo Note for rom porting purposes? My best guess at using Att roms would be replacing the boot IMG & being sure that your using the Tmo radio(I'm not sure if roms generally include a radio). If those things are correct you probably have a good chance of getting TW roms to boot. I would try it, but i wouldn't recommend it to others unless your experienced in recovering bricked devices, lol! Again, this is just a guess, as I've never ported anything. I'm sure you can find a thread here on XDA that explains the fundamentals of porting roms. If I end up purchasing one, I'm definitely going to give it a shot! I use a gs3 as my primary right now, and I'll just debating whether or not I want the Note, or just wait for the international Note 2 and wait patiently for the network refarming? The plus to the Tmo Note is that I do have an upgrade on one of my lines, so it would be considerably cheaper!
---------- Post added at 01:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:09 PM ----------
If there is anyone in the thread that also owns a gs3, I would like an opinion. Are you being bothered by performance of the Note because of the lesser hardware? I still have a Tmo Gs2 around here, & after the ics update things went downhill bad in the performance department. Even w/ custom Roms, I see lag & stuttering, & I'm wondering if this is the case w/ the Note? I don't expect it to match performance of the S4 chip set, I'm really just interested in the added functionality of the Spen, so long as performance is acceptable.
Anybody have any luck getting any of the AT&T Jellybean ROMs working on the T-mobile Note?

I also have the GSIII and as said above, the Note is a little slower but not much. I'm loving my Note and just looking for a good ROM to put on it which i'm sure will improve the speed. I also went to one of those cell phone stores that sells phones for multiple networks and got them to give me a full size SIM frame from where they used a cutter to make a micro SIM, and it works great as an adapter so I can still switch back to my GSIII with no problems.
You don't need an adapter if you're using your micro sim card on your Note. Just make sure it's align correctly and it should work. I had my sim card modified into a micro sim so I could use the iPhone 4. Still using that same sim card on my Note without an adapter.

What's YOUR Rom preference?

So I'm getting this phone today. Like most phones...after they "honeymoon" stage, ROM threads kind of die down. I like things simple...I'm coming from a Droid 2G, Droid 3, to the 4. (Which, by my luck, means the announcement of 5 will be any day now.) I'm looking for a ROM that's simple...and strong on battery. I'm not an average user, so I'm pretty sure I can get by...but I'm curious for ROM choices. I prefer a debloated stock rom as its usually the simplestest. But in true nerd fashion...I gotta ask..what's your preferred ROM?

eclipse. I've tried droidHD, aokp, cm10 and cna and frankly, I can hardly tell the difference (except for the screen rotation bug in jelly bean). eclipse is fast and easy on the battery; I'd go with it.
note, however, that with safestrap 3.x you can experiment with different ROMs all you like...
I agree, plus there are no bugs on Eclipse though I love the customization options of the JB roms.

Thanks guys. I thought I read somewhere that there was a screen rotation issue with Eclipse. Is this true?
Definitely the Eclipse hybrid. I left my phone stock for 2 months and I didn't like the battery drain and just decided to root and install safestrap (very easy) and I tried a few ROMs but came back to the eclipse hybrid. It's debloated and i also have it slightly overclocked to 1320 but with low voltage. Excellent battery life and very snappy! you won't be disappointed.

I use nova launcher but while I was using eclipse' launcher I didn't experience any problems
The rotation issue is with the JB-based roms (AOKP, CM, CNA0.
I've seen a lot of people recommending eclipse but this is the first time I've seen "hybrid" attached to the name. What is meant by "hybrid" in this case? Is there an eclipse rom and a hybrid eclipse rom, or is it just differing terminology for the same thing?

Agreed. I've noticed this too, specifically on droidforums.net and was wondering the same thing. That brings me to my next question...does anyone have a link for the Eclipse ROM that is so popular? I'm seeing mostly JB links around..and I'm perfectly happy with getting ICS. (I'm on GB right now)
Regular Eclipse is stripped to the bare bones, the hybrid version has some Verizon stuff still in it because some people still wanted to make use of some of the Verizon apps.
As for the link to Eclipse, there's a thread a few spots down with Eclipse.
EDIT: here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815079
I always keep the latest version of Eclipse on one of my ROM slots because it's always reliable and never lets me down. I use CM10 a lot on another slot because I like messing around with some of what JB has to offer but I always need to swap into Eclipse when I have an issue on CM10.
Best ROM thread.

[Q] ROMs for a Droid 4 as a PMP?

In a few days I'll be getting my hands on a Droid 4, looking to upgrade my media player from my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, seeing as there's no possible way I'll be able to use this phone (AT&T) I was wondering if any of you fine folks had any kind of roms or tweaks to this device to get it as slimmed down as possible, as phone functionality is not in any way required. In addition, if someone would be able to assist me in terms of how I actually flash roms to this device, it seems to be much different than with my player (I have used Odin in the past for that)
links in my list to rooting method
use safestrap to install roms
sd_shadow's [Collection] of Links for Droid 4
an update should start getting pushed, any day now
safestrap can not be installed, if you want to update
Sent from my Clear using xda premium
Thanks for the quick response, I figured most if not all android devices pretty much worked the same way in terms of flashing new things, guess I was pretty far from the truth. I've heard many people are happy with Eclipse, but it seems like there's more than one version, which do you think would be better suited for battery management on idle times? On my player, with wifi off (just on standby) I can manage 4-5 days on a charge with very light usage. Is there anything that would allow me to get these kinds of times with the droid 4, despite it's much more powerful processor?
unlikely you will get several days
keep phone in airplane mode, you can still turn on wifi, but any radio on uses power
freeze any app you don't use, may be trial and error, some apps are co-dependent (remove one another stops working correct)
maybe a list of apps that can be safely removed, not sure
install safestrap, and make a nandroid backup, before making changes
freeze apps with titanium backup pro
with safestrap, you should be pretty safe, freeze /remove what you want, restore backup, if phone will not boot correctly

Bloatware apps safe to remove on the Droid 4
Also be sure to keep an eye on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938246
It seems there's a lot of effort going on to get it working on AT&T etc.
Well if u want to do like me and keep it simple.. I didn't use safe strap. I flashed from zip on my sdcard and gradually removed apps using the safe to uninstall list as well as taking a few risks of my own. I run with 450+mb free on first boot and free memory hovers around 300mb during all day usage. Got to say I'm pretty happy with the performance. I don't have to tweak anything. Everything just works on command.

[Q] 4.4.2 for i537?

Hey guys I've had the i537 ATT S4 Active since the day it came out. Rooted it the first day I saw that on here, and its got some version of clockwork mod on it.
As such, I can't just upgrade to the ATT 4.4.2 OTA. I'm not sure its worth pulling root, going back, and then coming forward just to have another ATT-bloat ROM on the phone. Is it worth it? I never use any of the ATT bloat stuff except for the wifi hotspot thing... but I could even do without that.
If not, what's a good 4.4 ROM that would work? It seems like all the ROMs are for the international S4A. I need it to be stable with no or very minimal bugs... camera, network connectivity, bluetooth, and audio are all very important to me.
Don't do it!

A little background, I'm a long time xda lurker, never had the guts (nor felt like I had the appropriate knowledge level) to ever come out of the shadows. I first encountered this Samsung bootloader nightmare when I promised my girlfriend I'd root and and flash CM10 to her GS3. Like an idiot I took the OTA beforehand, so I was able to root but heartbreakingly unable to flash CM or even CWM recovery. I cannot describe to you how crestfallen I was once I did the research and realized what I had locked myself out of (I have had nothing but positive experiences with CM and its relatives on my Pantech Burst and Samsung Infuse). Trust me don't do it.
I guess the main point I'm trying to make is that you can always flash a stock(-based) ROM, and even customize it to look exactly like a bloatware-ridden new phone, but once you take the OTA, that's it you're done. No cyanogen, no custom ROMS, no custom kernels, no CWM. I wish someone had given me this warning a year ago with my gf's GS3 (Verizon btw, this nonsense isn't AT&T-exclusive). I know I'm repeating myself, but even without the OTA, you can still give yourself an authentic KitKat experience, whereas if you take the OTA, you're completely removing almost all the phone's customizability. And in my humble opinion, that very customization was what makes (or made, for those of us stuck on locked bootloaders, pining for the good old days) the Android experience so superior.
I really hope this helped, I saw your post and didn't want to see someone else lose their phone.
-I'm new to actually posting so I don't really know how to do this the right way but my current phone is the GS4 Active, I have two retired Pantech Bursts (one still working, IMO the best no-name brand smartphone at least as of 2012), a retired Samsung Infuse, and I have experience with the GS3 as well, mentioned above

The bootloader on the i537 is locked, you cannot install custom ROMs. Your only option is to use SafeStrap.

At a crossroads with my 1st gen moto x and trying to see if it's worth it

I see a lot of stuff regarding the 2014 moto x, but I'm particularly curious about the 2013 model in this case and I don't know anyone first hand that has rooted and installed a custom rom.
Basically, my phone is clearly aging, I am on two charges per day (to give you an idea that I don't look to something that eats even more battery), and I'm deciding on taking it for battery replacement if I feel I can get decent/nonsluggish use out of it. I am trying to hang on to the phone as long as I can since I feel it gives me what I need, but I was curious as to a couple things
1) what would the best version/rom to install period that won't be sluggish?
2) would I expect to see some improvements/hits to battery life?
3) is it even worth it given the age of the phone?
So far the only known issues I have on my stock phone are that snapchat has this weird clicky sound on video recording (it won't pick up my voice loudly), and stock text was so sluggish I had to switch to textra (which has been fine)
nope, get yourself a nexus 6p, or 5x and move on with your life. i upgraded from my moto x 1 a few months ago and i've never looked back. 5x's go for 200-250 all day on swappa. and dont give me that "omg hueg" complaint, becasue it will grow on you, after my 5x got water damaged i upgraded to an even bigger phone, the 6p, and havent really had much to complain about.
Encouraging stuff lol. Guess I'll hold onto the Moto x with stock for a couple more years.
I have the 2013 X (developer edition from Verizon) and rooted it almost from day 1. I kept it fairly stock (OS-wise) until it became almost unbearably sluggish. I moved to Resurrection Remix and it has been great with better battery life and snappy performance. I recently replaced the battery (and back plate) and it is still my daily driver. Good luck!
Thanks! Is 70$ too much to replace the battery you think?

Yes, it is unless you are also paying for the installation (and then it is still probably too much). I paid about $10 for the battery and did the install myself. I also replaced the back cover because mine was cracking already, but it will sometimes crack during removal. If you replace the battery, it is a good opportunity to get a cool new back cover, if you want something different. There is a thread on here about different back covers people have bought.
Good luck!
The original Moto X is still quite relevant, even if you run KK on it, or 7.0, doesn't matter. It's all about that you're getting bored of it, your battery died or anything in these lines.
To the OP I would flash CM13 and then install a new battery if need be . It would be like a new phone.
Read some guides and take your time. You will enjoy it and save yourself money in the long run.

Where can one go to get the battery replaced? Is there an authorized repair center or something? I just want to go somewhere trustworthy.
Also, where did get the battery from? I just want to make sure I have a brand new, genuine Motorola battery.
Also, in case I want to replace the battery myself, what tutorial did you use?

Where is the best tutorial for teaching me how to go through the process, assuming I haven't unlocked the bootloader yet? I'm very new to the world of flashing custom roms. I just don't want to screw up. I also don't want to have to read pages and pages worth of XDA comments to get this done.

I moved to Resurrection Remix and it has been great with better battery life and snappy performance. I recently replaced the battery (and back plate) and it is still my daily driver. Good luck!

Where can I go to learn how to install resurrection remix on the XT1053? Is there a tutorial or link with a complete set of instructions/files? Thanks!

I bought my battery from Amazon. Replacing it was easy following the iFixIt website video directions. There are other videos out there as well. But the back of the phone may crack when you remove it (it gets brittle as it ages) so you may want to buy a replacement from Amazon or ebay. You may also want to pick up a set of tools from Amazon or ebay that has the mini screwdrivers and plastic prybars.
As for Resurrection Remix, the directions are on the very first page of the RR page in the Android Development section. The rest of the pages are tips, tricks, clarifications and such... but then the first page should get updated with the necessary lessons learned.
Good Luck! I don't use my phone as a primary one anymore, but I sure wish I could. I still love the feel of it and such but I tried putting on the N ROMs and the camera and microphone had issues. I couldn't mess around with it too much anymore so I'm using my wife's old phone. Maybe it's time to go back to my first love...

What are the N ROMs? Have you tried CM13? Are there any Marshmallow or Nougat-based ROMs that are bug free?

As far as I can find, all of the N ROMs (Nougat-based) are going to have camera issues. I believe there are plenty of Marshmallow (MM) ROMs available that work fairly well. I have used Ressurection Remix and I think that is MM and fairly bug-free. I think I tried CM13, but I don't recall for sure.
