Google Now can't unlock?? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm running into an odd issue on the N6, although other devices seem to have this as well. . .
I used to be able to use google now to set alarm, send message, etc while its locked.
Now, doing the same things, google now replies that it can't complete the task until device is unlocked.
Is anyone else running into this and is there any way around it?
Thanks!

Bump ... help please?

rom you are using? and android version?

it only happens when the device is locked with a password or something similar. If you disable that you're good to go.

I have this issue. I can't set alarms or reminders unless I unlock the phone. The voice prompt tells me so. Quite annoying. Hopefully they remedy it with smart voice unlock soon

This updated feature now affects texts via voice now. I can no longer wake my phone from sleep and send a text unless the phone is unlocked. More of a reason to move to a moto x pure now. what a huge step back.

Hi, I just saw your post and I was having the exact same issue. The only way I can get around it currently is by rolling back to an old version of the "Google App" which seems to encompass Google Now, Voice Search, Google Now Launcher, and most importantly the OK Google "always on" functionality.
I went back through previous versions testing the "OK Google call _____" (screen off & device locked) feature until I found where it stopped working correctly and the "4.9.22.16.arm" version is the last one that does work the way it is supposed to. You can find older versions of the Google App on Apkmirror. Hopefully they track down the root cause of the issue and fix it soon.

google voice

Hey guys, I was wondering if there was a googlevoice workaround to activate the account on the gtab. It wants to send a txt msg but ofcorse it can't send one cause its not a phone. I've setup slipdroid but it wont register but shows my account when I go to pbx.org was wondering if maybe cause my googlevoice account on this tab couldn't finish setting up. Thanks
Matt
you have to update to the newest release then there is no problems
To follow up on what b3ltazar said, you may need to do the market fix in order to see google voice in the market. After the fix you will see google voice and can do the update. It will work after doing the update.
I have the new market. Running vegan 5.1 I tried the market fix but for some reason I never have and cashe when I got to allocations. Manage and tap on market. Why is this? Google voice is no where to be found in my market. Does anyone have the apk?
Thanks

I have it working... The workaround was to take the google voice on my phone, make a Titanium backup, copy those files over to the tab, and restore through Titanium backup as well. Afterwords, when you start voice, it walks you through the setup process and when it gets to the part trying to find the phone just back out of everything.
I've done this a couple times and it worked pretty well. You can text IF you have a google voice number.
Good luck!

That isn't really necessary anymore. Just update to the latest in the market, make sure the phone number you choose in Google voice has been added to your Google voice account, and text away...
If you don't see it in the market. Then you need to study up on market fixes. It is there in my market using vegaN Beta 5.1 and works fine. I use it everyday to talk to my kids..
I have it and it works great. Love texting from my g tablet

Slightly off-topic: Google Voice, and voice calls from Gtab, and in general?
Hi,
I have a Gmail and Google Voice account, and I guess that one thing that I've never quite understood is what Google Voice is, or is suppose to do, esp. vis-a-vis voice calls.
When I first got signed up for it, and when I'm in Google Voice (on a PC), I know that I can initiate a "voice call", but from what I can tell, the way that that works is that when you do a voice call from Google Voice, you tell it the number that you want to call (the "called number"), then Google Voice calls that called number, and calls you back on your REGULAR phone number. In other words, if the number that I have configured in Google Voice for myself is xxx-xxx-xxxx, when I initiate a call to yyy-yyy-yyyy, I get an incoming call on xxx-xxx-xxxx.
Then, awhile ago, Google announced that you could call from your Gmail account, and I was really surprised when I tried that. When I was in Gmail, I initiated a call to xxx-xxx-xxxx, and, I was able to talk to the called party ON MY PC, i.e., kind of like a "Skype out" phone call.
So, now that I have my Gtab, I was wondering: Is it possible to do the latter thing from my Gtab, i.e., to call a real phone number (xxx-xxx-xxxx) from my Gtab, and talk to that real phone via my Gtab, totally over Wifi on my end?
I've seen some posts and info about setting up sipdroid and pbx something or other, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do with just some combination of Google Voice app and Gmail app on the Gtab?
Thanks,
Jim
What version of Google Voice works for stock rom?
I have the same problem as many in this and 2 other threads.
Unable to get Google voice app to fully install. Does it only install / work on an UNstock gtab?
I can go to google voice in the browser and sent and receive texts, fine. But of course then you get no notification when messages come in.
As I said, I am runnning stock gtab, no mods. I was able to search and found Google voice in the gmarket but it gave me choices to sms or download to phone, or pc. I chose PC.
I click on install and at the screen where it asks for number confirmation, I select my cell phone, it returns error can not verify the number. (it is the same number I used to originally setup the gvoice on pc). I can not get past the voicemail setup page either, skip doesn't work and then back won't work and I am locked up.
There are so many great threads on this forum, but it seems many repeated questions because they remain unanswered, or perhaps there are so many version of tabs, the problems and solutions are ROM specific.
Its almost like we need sub forums, if running this, search here...

Do you have the market on your tablet? If yes, then update google voice and it should let you finish the setup.

I appreciate your reply.
a few questions:
1. is you tab rooted?
(I am reading like crazy to get all this, but there is so much! I thought TB only works on rooted units, but not sure if it requires a certain rom)
2. which rom are you running?
If I ever get this, I'm going to create a matrix: root - rom - apps - working y/n
(former career = ui testing / documenting)

I have gmarket, no mods.
I go to market and see no "updates"
I searched for, and installed google voice, no luck.
I will go back and look up installing gapps, I seem to recall it requires some mods first and that is what I was trying to avoid until I am sure I want to keep the unit.
I am on the fence. I never realized how (don't boo me) "hooked on windows I am" I love my android phone, but when it comes to the things I like to do on a bigger screen, as much as I love the touch feature, I really am so much more productive on a laptop. I'm sure its a learning curve, and I LOVE playing with new technology - and this sight is LOADED with all you need to know about the tab. But I am a step by step person and I feel like I am spending more time searching than learning.
Its just me .. kudo's to all the folks that help and dev here .. its a very amazing team!

Sorry for the delay in repsonding, I didn't have this thread tagged to notify me of replies.
Been busy messing with the new CM7 Beta for the Gtab.
Ok so, answers:
1) Yes my tab is rooted, the stock OS out of the box sucked the big dill pickle. I was rooted and customed within two hrs of taking it out of the box.
2) After messing around with the five or so availale ROMS, I decided to make the VEGAn 5.1 beta my daily driver, it and TnT lite are the most stable IMHO, I chose VEGAn over TnT because the news and weather genie was absent from TnT and the VEGAn web browser offer much more flexibility as far as options go. I'm a news junkie!
Also the On-Screen soft keys on the notification bar [HOME, MENU, and BACK] are fantastic additions since the keys on the device don't light up, which makes it real [email protected]%# when using the device in a poorly lighted room.
3) As for TB, it is my understanding it will only work with rooted devices.
4) It is also my understanding that TB will work with MOST Android devices and most ROMS whether stock or customed. YES TB will work with stock OS ROMS provided the device is rooted. And yes it is possible to Root your device WITHOUT unlocking the BOOTLOADER, both my N1 and GTAB are rooted via this method. N1 with Universal Androot and my GTAB with Z4root.

I don't have many people to call and those I do call i prefer video, but i have placed a few Skype calls on the Gtab and it works just fine for voice. Doesn't give the option for video, almost like it doesn't recognize the camera. i tried Fring and when i go to do a test call it makes a hideous noice and i have to force shut down the app. So for voice Skype is great.
Google Voice in the Market.
For those who after the market fix are still unable to find the google voice app, here is what I found. There are 3 different fingerprints floating around. When I could not find voice in the marketplace I started experimenting with the diffrerent fingerprints, and to my surprise each one gives different search results, with diffrerent apps available / missing. On my tab, with the samsung Tab fingerprint I was able to locate the google voice app, but with the standard mahimahi 2.2 i could not

Thanks for the heads up!
So the fingerprint is changed via build.prop edit?
Would either one of these mess up the VS GTab?

All the standard disclaimers re: blowing up your tablet etc. are all still in effect. however the fingerprint method significantly improves the plain vanilla clear market cache fix, at least on my tab. YMMV

Moto Voice recognition sometimes kicking commands to Google Now?

There are several commands built straight into Moto Voice. "What's up" reads notifications, for example. 9/10 times it will work great.
Then there is the 1/10 where I'll say "What's up".. and Moto Voice will kick to Google Now. I think maybe that it misheard me.. but then I look at the search and it's exactly "What's up". Except in Google Now.. that brings up a google search of local establishments thinking I'm asking what "up" is and doesn't read my notifications.
Anyone else experience this? Why is this happening?
[edit] Crappy video of the problem, sorry the poor quality and cams-manship.. took a while to actually get it to happen then it happened multiple times in a minute.
http://youtu.be/MlieuryHouo
Every single thing I say gets kicked to Google Now. I don't get it... so far this "touchless control" is just a slower way to access Google Now.
Some commands use Google Now legitimately. I'm not referring to those. I mean the commands that are supposed to be handled by Motorola. What's up, Good Night, etc.
Video of the problem added to OP: http://youtu.be/MlieuryHouo
Sorry the poor quality and cams-manship.. took a while to actually get it to happen then it happened multiple times in a minute. Give it a sec if it is still processing
Having the same problem, turning off Google now doesn't help either
Yeah, that happened to me occasionally. I wonder if the option to go to Google now from the lock screen needs to be disabled from the Moto app

I have had it happen when the phone was unlocked too, so I don't think that would be a viable workaround.
Any ideas why this may be happening when the command is obviously recognized properly?
Seems like a glitch. A reboot fixes this temporarily.
I initially had the problem of the "What's Up" and other specific commands not getting processed correctly but I redid the setup for the voice launch phrase and it worked after that.

For what it's worth, you can use tasker and an xposed module to force the phone to jump straight to Google Now search. You need the module "OkGoogleNowTriggerIntent" and info from this reddit thread.

Appreciate it, but no root on Verizon Moto X. Yet..
I ran into a similar issue except it was for the command goodnight and speak to me. I found out that nearly all my moto apps needed an update, but google play wasn't reporting them needing one in the my apps section of the play store. Easiest way to find out is to go to Motorola's play store developer page on your phone, click on each app that is marked as installed and see if there is an update pending. If there is, update it.
Additionally after I updated everything I got a prompt for a firmware update, install that too, restart and everything should be working correctly. Hopefully this helps!
Still have the same issue after the recent Moto Voice update

THIS PEOPLE!!!! The apps need to be updated. When I got my phone, a solid amount of the commands just kicked it to Google Now. In order to fix it, go into the Play Store and do 2 searches: "Moto" and "Motorola" and install all of the apps that need an update. The reason you need to do 2 searches is because a few of the apps don't show up in the "Moto" search, and some of them don't show up in "Motorola" so you need to do 2 searches to update all the apps.
After that all the commands will work fine. I have not had it kick a "Talk to me", "Good Night", "Good Morning", or "What's Up?" to Google Now ever since updating. Give it a try and it might fix your problems.

Some Moto Voice commands not recognized

Hey everyone,
So I got my new Moto X yesterday and I have some questions, particularly with Moto Voice. After watching videos online, and reading some various articles/websites, I have been trying to various voice commands to see what happens . However, there are certain ones that are not being recognized. For example, whenever I say "Good Night", it just brings up a Google search instead of "putting my phone to sleep". Also, "Good Morning" brings up a Google search, and the one that I am really bummed doesn't work is, "Talk to me" where it supposedly reads your notifications aloud for a given amount of time. Anyone know if these commands got pulled from the build or if I'm just missing something?
Also, in the Accessibility settings, there is an option to turn on or off "Moto Voice". What is this setting changing, because it doesn't seem to be affecting anything?
Thanks for your help everyone!
1 more unrelated question, are you guys running your phones on ART or Dalvik?
I have the exact same issues with "goodnight /good morning" I can't get them to work no mate what I try.
Had these issues too..
Fix: simply update all the moto stuff via Playstore!
In the accessibility settings moto voice needs to be "on" for it to work properly..
Moto needs this to read from/control other apps! E.g. if you say "play mozart on youtube"..
Edit: In Playstore under "my Apps" you won't find those apps to update. Instead you have to search for "moto"! Seems to be a Playstore bug.

Edit: I was able to get the phrases to work by uninstalling the moto voice and re installing it. It now works without a problem

Uninstall moto voice and re install it after it's done restart the phone and see if that would solve it. If that still doesn't work i'm not sure how else it could be solved.

Touchless Control stuck behind PIN lock

I have a XT1053 with stock 4.4.4 and have been having this problem for the last few months.
Somehow, the touchless control is now stuck behind my PIN lock. I have encrypted my phone, so the PIN lock is required. I used to be able to do things like "OK Google Now, what's the weather?" and Google Now would open and show me the weather, or send text messages. Basically the usual use, but recently the touchless control screen doesn't show when I say "OK Google Now", just the PIN screen. I can tell that the voice recognition is happening because Google Now will read me part of the weather, but usually gets cut off as the device goes to sleep before it finishes.
I'm not prompted to say or enter my PIN, I can enter it and get into the Google Now screen but not without using my fingers.
I haven't been able to find anyone else having this particular problem so I don't really know what to try. I've tried disabling Touchless Control, retraining, uninstalling updates (Moto Voice) all to no avail.
Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?
Oh thank you. I was going nuts because I thought I was the only one. I posted on here as well and no one responded. I have been having this issue for the last few months ever since a Google search app update.
I have an exchange work account set up that forces me to have security on the lock screen. I have the pattern lock set up.
At this point I'm waiting for the lollipop update and hoping that it will fix that problem
Don't know why I didn't think of this before, I uninstalled updates to the Google App and everything is as it was before. If I can find a repository of various versions I will experiment to try and find which version broke.
Just FYI, I got the 5.1 update over the weekend. The updated Moto Voice app, and the latest Google search app are once again working together. I'm able to use the voice control without entering my PIN again.
Same here waiting paid off this time

OK Google - PROBLEMS

I use ok google all the time to send texts especially when driving. frequently i am getting an error where she says
"actually, i can't do that while the device is locked" after unlocking with fingerprint it isn't recognized that the device is unlocked for some reason
it seems to be a MIUI problem as there is a huge thread http://en.miui.com/thread-274084-1-1.html
anyone know a solution?
also, one suggestion from Google is to just turn on Trusted Voice so that you can use the OK Google command when the device is locked. when i turn this on the OK Google command does not work and is not recognized no matter what screen i'm on let alone with the device locked
anyone ran into similar problems with the Mix?
I have a similar issue...If I disable lock pattern and then re-enable it it will work. A bit of hit and miss really. Would love a proper solution if there is one.

Same. I can't get it working from a black screen. My other devices will wake up and "listen". On the Mix, I have to activate the screen and then say ok google for it to listen. I did the resetting the lock screen and it did help get ok google to listen on the lock screen. So thanks for that.
I also have the same problem with the latest Google app but it works with version 4.92.16 except that I'm not able to use ok Google from screen off. I hope there's a solution to this
Not sure if i just haven't used OK Google enough yet, or if it has legit fixed the problem...but after converting google to a system app i have not run into this error yet with over 20 times using OK Google. we will see if it holds up.
did you have this problem before making it system app and went away after?
I figured this out.
Browse to Google App > Settings > Voice > "OK Google Detection" and enable "Personal results"
Kind of a workaround, since this allows actions when your device is locked, but works well for me.
I don't have that option for enable Personal results.
I only have
From the Google App
From Any Screen
Trusted Voice
While Driving
All four are enabled.
personal ressults has always been enable and still no joy.
I don't even have while driving.
Only three options.
I don't think it's a MIUI thing. It happens on my Google Pixel XL with the latest Nougat. Same message.
