Tab S2 upgrade - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I got an email saying I could get up to $100 off the new Tab S2 if I traded in my Tab S. I'm not really interested in "upgrading" to be honest, but I was interested in seeing just how close to $100 I could get.
They only ask 2 questions regarding the condition of your Tab S. 1: Does it power on? 2: Is the LCD/Touchscreen non-functioning, have dark spots, blemishes or is the glass broken or cracked?
Answering "yes" to the first and "no" to the second means that is the best condition your Tab S can be in; given the questions available. Guess what? You would only get $20 for it. WTF?! My tablet is in mint condition and I've had it nearly a year. Wipe the fingerprints off and remove root and it would be ready for a new owner.
As you can tell, this is mostly just a rant post. I'm sick of companies taking the Gamestop approach to their products when trading in. *sigh*

Best Buy has a trade-in promo for $100 off the S2. They'll accept several different tablets. I considered trading in my Nexus 7 (2012) and selling my S1 on eBay/Craigslist to cover most of the costs. I hate the S2's 4:3 screen ratio, so it's not worth it to me.

In most parts of the world you can still buy a tab s 10,5 for around 300$/euro.
Maybe if you trade in a surface pro of 1000$, you would get 100$?

I traded in a kindle HD 8.9 and got the $100 discount (they didn't notice it was rooted ). Needless to say the tab s2 blows the kindle out of the water!

The screen ratio isn't that I big of a deal for me since I don't use it for watching videos as much as I use to. I see no reason for anyone to switch to the S2. If they would just continue updating the Tab S, I think we would be set until S3 comes out; assuming it actually has better specs.

I'm not upgrading neither; current generation display, specs are quite ok for me; the device goes very well with official bluetooth keyboard and unofficial cyanogenmod 12.1; I dont't have any problem with current games and applications; and it's not my phone; why shall I change it?

A lot of people select Tab 10.1 for trade in, which is $20 on most companies. You should fill it out for 10.5, they typically pay $150 or so for those if you get the lowest version (16gb).

The hardware on the S2 is equivalent to a Galaxy note 4, which scores about 50% more on benchmarks. So it is more than just a ratio change.

There is no reason to upgrade a tablet since the Android platform is so fragmented that even the 10.5 is considered a extremely powerful android device. Upgrading it isn't really going to give you anymore power.

As far as I see it, the price difference isn't that much. The Tab S is capable of the same and to me, I think it's far more sleek than the Tab S2.

I traded a Nook Color for $100 at Best buy yesterday and I used this trade to buy a S2 8 inch.

This evening (25 Sep), I went to BB to look at the current tablets. My Tab 10.1 that I've had forever (got one of the first ones the local BB had) was annoyingly slow by today's standards. I had SlimSaber ROM on it, which made it more usable, but still not speedy.
I traded in my Tab 10.1 and got $100 off on an S2 WiFi 9.7". The S2 is such an improvement that there is no comparison with my old tablet. I also got the flip cover. Samsung always charges too much for accessories, but it is a nicely made cover.
I tried to give BB the flip cover for the old tablet, but they wouldn't take it. I don't know what I'm going to do with it, as it doesn't fit anything else.
BB just looked to make sure that the old tablet wasn't damaged, that it turned on and worked. They copied the model and S/N off the back and issued me a $50 credit and a $50 gift card (not sure why they split it like that). Both were applied to the purchase of the S2.
BTW, someone else here mentioned trading in a Kindle tablet. The local BB specifically stated that a Kindle tablet would not be accepted.
If you are going to take advantage of the trade-in on an S2, you had better do it REAL SOON. The promotion ends today (26 Sep).
It is a bit sad to think about what I paid for the Tab 10.1 new vs what it is worth today. I figured that the trade-in was a good deal, because I would probably have had a hard time selling the Tab 10.1 for $100.
It has only been a few hours, but so far, I am very pleased with the new S2. Now to see how much I can tweak it without rooting it yet. At least Samsung didnt bloat it up as bad as my original tablet.

They took my Kindle no problem. It was not a basic B&W kindle, it was a Kindle HD 8.9", basically an android tablet, only with an ancient Amazon fork of Android. They didn't notice it was rooted!

I traded in a Tab 2 7" that was rooted and had Candy5 loaded on it. BB gave me the $100 in the form of a gift card that is then applied to the price of the Tab S2. Works for me.
My Tab S2 display & performance is such an improvement over the old Tab 2 that it is well worth it. The Tab 2 was worth about $20.

So i was thinking of buying the s2 8 inch tablet. I mostly want it for movies and games, will it be great for this. I hav read that the new ratio wont work wel with this. So should i buy the new s2 or the old s 8.4?

Like every 4:3 tablet this is not a movies tablet.
pick a 16:9 or 16:10 tablet with front speakers.

That's up to you, but a 16:9 tablet with frontspeakers would be better suited for your needs.

Nook Color vs. Galaxy Tab?

Has anyone spent a good amount of time with both a rooted Nook Color and the Galaxy Tab who can write some impressions on how they compare in regular use? The $350 difference is dictating that I go Nook Color, but it's always fun to hear comparisons before buying...

I have the NC, Archos 70, and VS tablet right now, and the color is by far the best screen.
The VS device lasted all of an hour before I decided that I am returning it tomorrow, it is that bad even with custom roms. The screen is bad, the unit is heavy, and I decided the 7 inch size is my favorite.
The Archos running froyo is very buggy, only has 256mb of ram, and has wifi issues at this point and feels like I could break it by looking at it too hard.
The color is the best display, has plenty of ram, and feels very solid. We just need a good rom and it should fly!

I was wondering more in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but that's cool too.
Oh scrap. I can't read.

Two of my coworkers got a Tab. It is definitely better than the Nook Color - it's running Android 2.2 out of the box, the screen is as excellent as the Nook's, and it's got 3G, gps, bluetooth, and a camera (if those things are important to you).
It's also snappier as it has a slightly faster chip. It is thicker than the Nook Color though.
The biggest difference is that you can pretty much buy 2 Nook Colors for 1 Tab.
If you want the full Android 2.2 experience and the $300+ price difference is not a factor, then yeah get a Tab.
i only tested a display and i was blown away by the experience. all the goodness of the nook (great screen, sturdy hardware, 512MB of ram) with the performance of the archos 70 (much snappier than the nook-but not as fast as the galaxy).
i'm very much considering returning both the nook and archos 70 and just getting the galaxy tab. i only need one (other) tablet anyways.
The point is, how is the potential of the NC with a custom ROM?
With a fine software many think that the NC will perform almost as good as the Tab...
Time will tell.
I think it will.... Roms do make a HUGE difference with these type of devices. Let's hope someone get one out soon.

I wasn't too impressed with the Galaxy Tab when compared to the Nook Color. I don't need 3G, bluetooth or a camera because my phone has all of that. I've played with the Galaxy Tab in a store here in Finland and it's quite thick as well.
The Nook Color is thinner and than my iPad but with the same resolution screen and more dots per inch.
The cost is another issue. The Galaxy Tab is over 800euro over here yet the Nook Color came to under 300 euro including 23% local import tax and shipping service cost. I would have bought the Galaxy Tab if the price wasn't so ridiculous.

800 euro... that's 1050 USD. Here you pick up the Galaxy at the store for 600 USD, some 450 Euro.
Gotta love the CHEAP US of A!
I think we need to be a bit honest with ourselves here. Let us cut to the chase, the Galaxy Tab is a better device than the NC. It is more capable out of the box because of the hardware it carries, and as good as the Nook Color is, lack of hardware features can never be made up by the best ROM in the world.
This does not mean the Nook Color is a bad device. It is a great device, in its price range.
To me, the Nook is not a competitor to the Galaxy Tab. The Tab is a BMW. The Nook Color is a sturdy Ford, both good - but two different devices that do not compete with each other.
A buyer interested in a Galaxy Tab will not consider a Nook Color (as a Android tablet) just like a Nook Color buyer will not consider a Galaxy Tab. The price differential is just too big.
There is much to like about both devices, but comparing them, IMO, is apples to oranges - and a mismatch from the get-go.
Keep in mind who makes the Tab
Like so many others I heard about the Samsung Behold 2 and how those customers got screwed but got a Samsung Vibrant anyway. And like so many others I found out the GPS is borked. And the battery life is poor. At least I didn't experience the lag problem, but I returned it.
And watched for the not-really-promised GPS fix. Which finally came and...didn't work. I really liked the screen and wanted to like the phone, but if the phone can't do what was advertised up front, forget it.
And Samsung on Android 2.3 on their S9000 series of phones (e.g. Vibrant)? Their statement sounded like "Maybe someday if we feel like it and there is a strong tailwind we might think about it but no promises". Maybe the phone is a dead end, maybe it isn't, but based on Samsung's performance so far, I wouldn't count on it. It doesn't have 2.2 yet. My phone (MT4G) came with it, my wife's (DX) got an OTA.
To me this says the Samsung Tab is absolutely out. You'd have to practically give me one to get me to take it. Same for the Nexus S.
The Nook, right now, is not fully tabletized, but that's a matter of software. It has a fabulous screen and seems reasonable in many ways. It is far cheaper than any of its competition (as a tablet). I find it stylish and I could actually imagine reading books on it (I know, what am I thinking?). And my wife is irate that I'm considering it so soon after she got me an Air.
So, is there a Plex controller that is worthwhile for Android tablets? That'd go a LONG way toward getting approval from the missus.
I agree. Samsung has never supported their devices well, and they still insist on using proprietary cables and connectors on everything. On top of that, they went ahead and did everything I dislike about apple by releasing the galaxy tab at that price. They are not even trying to compete with the Ipad, they are just assuming that everyone who wants an android tablet will shell out the big bucks to buy it, the same way apple fans will shell out the big bucks to buy anything made by apple. I'm sure it's a good device, it's gotten great reviews - I just don't like the way they went about it.
My wife told me after I got the NC that she was going to get me a Tab for Christmas. I'm glad I got the NC, I would have had to return the Tab! Too many features in the Tab that I just won't use. The only thing it has that I wish the NC had, is the slightly faster processor (800MHz vs 1GHz.)
Besides the hardware differences, it's a Samsung. They aren't known for providing updates in a timely manner and support on their devices. Sure, we don't know about the NC's status in that respect, but I also don't really care given it's price point. Whatever the development community does is fine by me!
But as was already said, you aren't comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to a fruit basket. It's got more, it's different, and it's more money. I'm fine with apples.

While we're talking about Samsung's business tactics that leave a sour taste in your mouth, two things come to mind:
- apparently they turned down Google's proposal for them to name the eventual Nexus S the Nexus 2 because "we're not #2 in anything." Wow. Surely someone is making a year-end list of "biggest douchebag quotes of the year" right about now - please note this one.
- I'd sacrifice my first-born if the reason for the delay until "after the holidays" for the wifi-only Tab was because of production delays. Either the carriers threw money at them to delay it, or it's just more profitable for them to sell 3g models, so they delayed it (or both). The irony is, I'd more strongly consider a Tab if a $450 wifi model was available now.
It would be closer if the Nook Color had Bluetooth, that way you could use a Bluetooth GPS, headsets, etc...
...but someone posted in another topic that Bluetooth might be there just "hidden", maybe in a custom ROM ?

Hi discourse, I see you live in Finland (Europe), and as I am thinking of getting a Nook Color myself, could you tell me from which online store did you buy yours?
Thank you..!
About the Galaxy Tab, I've played with it for about an hour. My opinion is that it is laggy and definitely doesn't worth the ~600 euros that is its price here in Greece.

The processor chipset (?) is supposed to include bluetooth. It's assumed it wasn't activated due to licensing costs for bluetooth, so it's there, just not used and may be "unlocked" by a rom.
I've both. NC cannot compare to the Galaxy Tab in user experience.
You just get a much better polished experience with the tab on everything. Tab's gpu is almost 10x faster in polygon count. CPU is faster (even with SetCPU set at performance on NC). Everything just works on the Tab.
That said, I am considering returning my Tab because of all the new tablets coming out in a few months, and the price. NC could hold me over for a few months.

Do you know if the hardware GPU is better than the NC or is just based on current software of Tab vs NC? I've done a lot of research into the nook color, but I admit, graphics wise it's still a bit of a mystery to me.

[Q] Is P1000 still worth buying TODAY?

I'm looking for a Tab, but Transformer seems to big for me. P1000 is the perfect size, but it is pretty old device. Is it still worth buying today?
Thanks.
If you think 7" tablet is a perfect size for you then why not, the Galaxy tab is only 1 year old and it still stands against any other alternatives out in the market today.
I would hardly say just because the tablet is "pretty old" that it isn't a good purchase. It's well supported by developers and the fact that people are still purchasing it... Its a solid working and built piece of kit.
You won't be disappointed.
I would say that they are definitely still worth it. The price point alone is a great reason. You can get a Galaxy tablet for less than half the price of many of the newest tabs.
It's already been shown that these models are capable of running the new firmwares. There are ports of Honeycomb out there already, and though there are still some issues to be ironed out, they work pretty well. Since installing a 2.3.4 rom on my vzw tab, I've been very impressed with how responsive and cleanly it runs.
Having handled some of the newer and larger tablets, I've found that the smaller size is really more ideal to me personally. I can fit my Galaxy tablet in my pocket. My folks for example both have iPads, and they are just much larger and bulkier devices. You can't drop one in your pocket real quick while you are out on the run.
Anyway, hope that helps!

I live in eastern europe and here the tab's price is almost the same as Transformer's. And that one has Tegra 2 and a nice 10.1' IPS display. They are both here 540 USD / 380 EUR. I tried Iconia A500 Tab, but I was quite disappointed - it was very heavy, typing text while trying to hold with one hand was challenging. The OS and that big display sure looks great, but for now I can't see my self taking this out in the street while walking, or chatting (IM) while sitting in the bus on my way college. How much is the P1000 in the US? Or UK?

In the UK, the P1000 (if you can find any in stock) still goes for around £399 and the P1010 is currently in bestbuy/currys for £299.
But search on ebay or other sites, you can find one for a lot cheaper. I got mine brand new from ebay for £250 (P1000).
Of course, these will probably fall in price when newer alternatives comes out but for now, they are holding its value as they are still popular and people are buying them.
I just bought one today. So far I am happy with it.
I have seen the US models selling new for between $150-200 when you buy from a mobile provider. For example, I know Verizon was selling them earlier this year for $200 when you agreed to a two year service agreement. I've also seen the WiFi only tablets for $350. Personally, I was willing to sign a contract, because having the 3g data access was something I desired.
But, I would do as one of the other posters suggested, and check ebay. As I understand it, you can buy a US model and put a European firmware on it. I would double check that though, as I don't want to tell you something I am not entirely sure of.
Got mine a month ago in aussie land, on a 12 month contract. 0 dollars for the tab and $39 a month for the plan with 8g of data and I get 3 months of the plan for free. Was really happy with that price.
Got mine in Italy for 300 Eur. Best purchase of the year: perfect balance between pocketability and readability, and with Gingerbread it is lag free and quick.
Rumours are that Samsung is going to present a revamped 7" tablet w/ upgraded cpu and amoled screen. I won't upgrade unless it has usb host or otg, which is the feature I miss much on my Tab.

Nothing wrong with the P1000. Good support is important. Even if it's a year old it still beats an ipad. Good resolution and speed, and very complete. Very sturdy, durable Gorilla glass.

I bought mine last month, and I love it. My pocket is not that big to fit in the tab, so I bought a small bag to bring around. I was confused whether buying Galaxy S (for super amoled and small factor) or Galaxy Tab (for bigger screen to read ebooks). Well, its worth buying
I bought one a couple of weeks ago, and am very happy so far. Yes, it's a year old - but the screen is very good (much better than alternative 7" tablets'), it's relatively cheap & there's lots of development going on with it.
The next 7" from Samsung is set to have an AMOLED screen & will probably be dual-core, which will be awesome, but I wanted something now & wasn't prepared to 1) wait & 2) pay much more than I did...
Make sure you root & stick Overcome ROM on it! It becomes a different animal once you do!
Got an Asus Transformer for the home/travel, but day to day chucking in pocket (albeit large pockets), still love the Tab. Got it for 200bucks so can't complain.
If I had to pay full price? I think I'd skip, for that price a newer 7" tablet would still be preferred.
Main thing it comes down to though is where are you, and do you need voice? if so, Tab might still be perfect for you.
It's a good question to ask here, as the answer isn't obvious. Without a tablet, I would, if I had the cash, get the Tab again. It's portability still makes it a winner for me.
Waiting for the next model is ok, but... these things always seem to take 6months longer than initially planned it appears.
Thee galaxy pad still a good tab/phone. its fast, not to big and have a lot of apps/games that works so...
Galaxy tab worth to buy.why?
The best tablet for 7 inch tablet.
Equiped with microsd, simcard for mms,sms,3g and telephone
the best size to carry around even easily beat ipad
Development of Custom rom and stock rom are always up to date
unless samsung release new 7 inch tablet with dual core processor and amoled sceen
then it is not worthy anymore to purchase
When I got the P1000, my standard in speed and responsiveness on android began to change. I began to compare the Qualcomm chipset based androids vs. the Hummingbird of Samsung. The P1000 (and the original Galaxy S Plus which runs the same thing) is really good and even better can match the next gen Qualcomm. See how the original Galaxy S graphics even beats the Galaxy S Plus (newer release), is because of the same speedy setup done before.
The P1000 is a very good device. Really crazy why Samsung shortchanged many unknowing people as they downgraded the P1010 with an inferior chipset and graphics.
Is there already a dual core 7" as good as the P1000? The Dell Streak 7 besides abit more massive has a problem with batt life. Archos I didn't bother to consider. Is there anymore? The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is coming out better (dunno when), but it is not 7". Nothing compares that I know... for now.
I've only had mine for about a week, I bought it second hand for a great price and I love it so far. I use it more than my laptop and my Asus Transformer. I LOVE the size. The 10" tabs you pretty much need to use both hand to hold it all the time, the G.Tab easily in 1. Plus being able to type with both thumbs instead of finger pecking is a HUGE plus.
Yeah, the Galaxy Seven will probably be out in a couple months but if you need one now then it's a great little tab.
I was at the shop today again, played with XOOM and again with Galaxy Tab. Damn its size is just perfect and the screen so detailed and feels high quality. But then I tried to do what I do on My N900 (Maemo 5 OS), and WOW :O IT CAN NOT MULTITASK. I never noticed that! You can not have skype online and browse the web while listening to music. I asked the guy at the shop. He confirmed, just some can "run in the background" but there is no task switcher... Maybe you can make it multitask? On iOS i have backgrounder and Kirikae and it works like a charm, can you do the same on android?

Are you still happy with your Nexus 7?

Hi everybody!
I'm about to get a tablet. Not sure yet which one, but the Nexus 7 is definitely one of my targets.
So I was wondering, if you, Nexus 7 owners, are still happy and would still recommend it.
If not, let me know why and what you'd recommend instead.
Looking forward to your answers.
Kind regards and greetings from Germany.
Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.
still like it? its been less than a month lol
ive had 2 defective ones and a 3rd is being sent to me, and i still like it.
Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

um....
I'm looking forward to use a tablet for browsing the internet while I'm on the couch / bed and if possible watch a few episodes of my favorite TV shows while I'm traveling (train / airplane). I'm not much of a gamer and for music I've got my little iPod. That's pretty much it...
I have only one problem with mine. I can't put the damn thing down.

well....yes. I've decided to buy a smartphone (name is not relevant) once, and after only 10 days, I've regretted that decision already. I think after 4 weeks you can decide that already, don't you?
Yes I'm still happy with my purchase. I bought it on July 17 and since then I didn't use my iPad 3 yet. Same thing for my gnex... since I got jelly bean on it I've yet use my iPhone 4s. I understand why apple hates android now!

Soooo who gonna sell their Nexus 7 for a Ipad Mini?
Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.
I personally won't be selling mine as im not a fan of Apple never have been, but i reckon some on here will even if they don't admit to it right now.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Then go for it. You won't regret it.
Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

yup everytime its in my hands I say mmmmmmmmmmmmmannnnn Im glad i got this thing :good:
I'm loving it. It's my most used tablet so far. It just feels very comfortable in the hand and works very fine. Great device.

Pre Ordering Samsung Tab S

Moving over to a Tab S 10.5" from a Note Pro 12.2" not much different in the display size but my arms will appreciate the weight difference and my eyes will LOVE Netflix HD.... Sears has a SWEET DEAL on preorder right now 105.00 back and FREE Tab S Book cover ? thinking if I should wait around on the 32GB Version though ?

It's tempting even though I have a Note 10.14 already... :victory:
This is such a great tablet I can't imagine this new one, with that screen and size specs.

I think this is the first post in this forum.
Definitely would like at least 32 GB. Leaning more towards the 8.4". We have a 10" tablet, and it is just too big to use one handed. And by use, I mean hold.
The weight of both tablet is relatively low. The AMOLED screen makes for a thin tablet. The ahead-of-its-time GT-P6800 7.7 tablet is amazingly thin and solid. It's still a good tablet for media playing and web surfing.
I just pre ordered the 10.5 32gb version from Best buy, I wonder how they pulled the exclusive with the 32gb. I'm in the process of putting some sample files on a flash drive to test on one of the display models. Best buy also has the bronze and white book covers for 39.99 rather than 69.99. Glad I decided to wait for the release and didn't open my Note Pro, it's already on it's way back to Samsung.
Edit: So I went and tested two video files at the local Best Buy, Pacific Rim 1080p 12gb mkv high encoding 19 quality and Timescapes mp4 2560x1440. The picture on this tablet is amazing especially the nature scenes in the Timescapes file. The stock player was able to player both files with no skips or jitters.
I pre ordered the 8.4 from Future Shop (Canada). I am keeping my Note Pro 12.2 as my home unit, the 8.4 as my traveler (Read in bed) and Nexus 5 as my phone. I have no problems with a 16 gig unit. I used the savings and bought a 64 gig microsd. After being burned by Samsung in the past ie.. software updates and coming from a Nexus background I was hesitant to purchase the 12.2 but I have to admit that it has been a nice experience. The first tablet I haven't bothered to root. I think the 8.4 will be even better. Of course I will be keeping my eyes on this year's Google IO conference just in case they mythical Google 8 is announced. I just need to find a case and glass screen protector.
I am really tempted by this new tab
Especially since I sold my Nexus 7 2013 FHD, I really would like to replace that with the new 8.4 Tab S. I miss reading books and browsing the web on my couch or bed. I don't really care for the aesthetics mainly due to the placement of the buttons, it's just weird having the phone layout of buttons on a huge tablet, I prefer to have them on the sides of the device. Not a deal breaker though. I'm just torn on whether to buy this 8.4 through amazon as I have a gift card there for 300 bucks or save a little more and wait for the new Nexus 8 or Nexus 10 if they ever announce them. I have a galaxy note 3 and being a phablet I thought it would be sufficient enough in size to not miss my nexus 7 but I was wrong. The one thing I hate about Samsung is the bloatware and difficulty in rooting the device due to knox and voiding the warranty. I'd prefer to wait for a tablet using either the tegra 4 K1(32 bit) chip or the tegra k1 (64 bit) chip because the games on it would be fabulous, but like I said I am just itching to replace my tablet I dearly miss and this samsung galaxy tab S looks very promising...Woe me
for some reason the smartwatches here in bahrain and saudi are more expensive than in the US but the phones and phablets are cheaper, wonder which range this tab s prices will be here
I preordered this online on bestbuy (in canada) because when I went to do it in stores their system didn't let them help me. is this normal? anyway if you preorder from bestbuy canada they give you the folio case for free as well I believe and theres a lexar 64gb thats on sale for 70 bucks off until the 19th...
Noticed BestBuy, Futureshop, Staples in Canada all bumped their dates back to July 4th right away. Was saying June 26 for the first day or two. Amazon still says June 26.
I wonder if it will get bumped again. I've had horrible experience ordering online from bestbuy and futureshop. I'd try staples next if they had the free cover offer too.
I ordered the 10.5 white from Samsung store for $499, including Samsung's book cover case worth $69.99 as a gift... They promised 1 July delivery.

What color folio case did you select?
On both bestbuy.ca and futureshop.ca, only 3 colors (brown, blue, and white) are available for free.
When I add the charcoal black one to my cart, it shows up as full price.
I was going to go into the store to ask for the black one, but your posts makes it sound like they won't be able to do much.

I started my tablet buying addiction with Chinese tablets - lol. I have owned a number of Chinese tablets , TV sticks and TV boxes. My advice is to save yourself a lot of grief and buy a name brand tablet from a recognized retailer. There are a number of issues to consider. 1) The RK3288 looks like a good chip but Rockchip is notorious for producing buggy versions of Android. I know I currently own two Rockchip devices and if it wasn't for a dedicated user base debugging and producing custom ROM's, the devices would be useless. 2) If your tablet has a hardware defect you would have to ship it all the way back to China - usually at your own expense. It could take months to get it sorted out. 3) Chinese manufacturers tend not to support devices once they are originally released and since these Chinese tablets don't usually appear on XDA you are left on your own. 4) Many Chinese Companies quickly disappear for no notice. 5) You'll be kicking yourself for not spending that extra money for that great Tab S display.
If you do by Chinese then Geekbuying is a reliable place. They have always been good to me.
Hope this help,
D

Staples.ca is offering the Black one only for free. Not selectable. Go figure.
I just bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. It's really nice and I actually like the S-Pen more than I thought I would... however, I'm thinking of returning it to get a Tab S instead.
From what I see, the specs are really close between the two tablets. Main differences appear to be the AMOLED screen and slightly thinner/lighter Tab S ... but then I lose the S-Pen. Both AMOLED and scLCD screens seem to perform nicely, so that's a matter of preference I guess. I have a Galaxy S5 and the scLCD on the Note side-by-side to my S5 AMOLED screen looks pretty close.
Thoughts? Do you think the Tab S will be that much better than something like the Note 2014?
Thanks

Tab S Regrets

I am not sure about you guys but I do have a bit of regret purchasing the Tab S 8.4. Its a great tablet, build wise, however, all the bloat is a different issue. With rumors of the HTC Nexus coming 4QT2014 w/ crazy specs, a lot may be thinking if they should wait or not.
I've own the Tab Pro 10.4 great device but was within the window to return it for the Tab S 8.4. As android gets more mature same as the Vendors and their devices get more and more difficult to gain kernel level root access.
I was going to pull the trigger this morning on the 8.4 after playing with the demo at best buy yesterday...but I had to restrain myself. As impressive as that display is, the rest just doesn't do anything for me. I've decided to hold out for the new nexus HTC tab or the Shield Tablet, both of which are rumored to have the tegra k1 monster chip. I want front facing speakers ala boomsound, and at the very least 32gb of on board memory. I just know that if I purchase the 8.4 I will have buyers remorse very soon after, especially when better, stronger tablets are right around the corner.
And when the HTC tablet goes on sale there will be something else better coming out in 3 months. I've read the complaints about bloat and lag. Just don't have an issue with it. We already have root and within 2 weeks the optomized debloated ROMs will start to show up. I already use Nova Launcher and have no lag at all.
Buying technology is a guarantee to be in a perpetual state of buyers remorse. Nature of the beast. I wanted a tablet now and this was the best athlete in the draft. BestBuy took off $100 for my old useless tablet so I bought the 10.5 S and love it. YMMV.
Last I knew all nexus devices are absent SD card. That equals no sale to me.

Well there's your problem 8.4, come join us in the 10.5 room, much better
The HTC tablet won't be out until late October/November if past Google Fall events are any indication. That's a good 4 months with a great tablet if you keep the Tab S.
Any one know what's going to be in the HTC Tablet?
Bloat? What bloat?...I rooted and deleted every Samsung app....tab flies.
As much as I loved all the Nvidia (tegras) and I tried all. Even overseas. ALL get way to hot and battery life is awful. For me battery life is everything.
Like SO many others have said and here. By the time you wait for the new K1, you will hear of something better coming 3 months after that.
Just wait for debloated Samsung roms to hit, seeing the 10.5 already has root. I have already removed 90 percent of the crap bloatware from mine

Seriously???? Check the development section.
You will not get that tablet for $299. The extra waiting and higher price was not worth it to me as I knew about that forecasted tablet and specs.
The S is great for the money and having it NOW!
Took my open box 8.4 S back to BB and just grabbed the $249 Pro. Samsung kiosk told me they still stock the Pro but were told NOT to disp, ay them anymore.
Every BB near me has open box S for sale already $339 to 359 for 8.4 and 459 for the 10.1
The pro seemed a little quicker to me though nothing earth shattering
The amoled screen is too colorful unless in basic screen mode, and then is not much better than the Pro with a little app tweaking
The S will be 299 or less by the end of the holidays or the Note will be out

It's all good you like what you like. I liked the colors on the Pro just fine. THE deciding factor for me was the text blackness. I just cannot stand gray text and love the black on the S. Hope you enjoy your Pro. The S will get better and better with OTAs and a few roms.

Honestly, after did the tweak with the color app, the pro was pretty nice. I will admit the colors at times look washed out on the pro compared to the s.
I had similar experience with phones. Got a Nokia 1520 because I thought the LCD blew away the Note 3
Heck, about 6 months ago I was deciding between nexus 7 and g pad. Likewise, in 6 months there will be newer toys and these soon forgotten.
I think ultimately I just don't want to shell out the extra money right now

Yes, it is all good but I personally would much rather have the S for $299.
The screen is just beautiful. Watching movies, the blacks are black and I just love the colors, yet the 32gb version... just not worth it for me. I can get a NEW note 2014 32gb for $160 less then what I paid for the Tab S. So I did.
