This kind of weird but my Moto X 2014 (xt1085) just bricked itself after the installation of android 5.1. After downloading and installing, the phone turned off and then it won't come back. The display is black, LED doesn't do anything, cannot get to recovery... so it means completely unusable. When I plugged it to computer, the computer has the usb sound but doesn't recognize it. The phone screen is still blackout. Any idea of this?
Sounds like a hard brick. You will have to send it in for repair. There is no way for us to fix hard bricks ourselves currently.

Sounds like the black screen of death. There are a few threads on this. Try a factory reset from recovery.

You have hardbricked your mobile phone. You have to send it to the repair centre.

so a buddy of mine possibly hard bricked his captivate today. he tried to odin a stock rooted rom and it messed up completely, i was able to get it into download mode again and odined back to a normal stock non rooted rom but it was like the odin didnt stick and it started doing the same thing. essentially when the phone is off if you turn it on it stays on the att screen for roughly ten seconds and bootloops. if you plug it in it acts like it is charging for a second then freezes and loops through acting like its charging over and over. if you power it on and then plug it in it goes to the charging screen and then loops. any suggestions since i can no longer get into download mode? do i need to buy a jig?
Sounds like you need a jig. You can buy what you need at radio shack and make it yourself though

No it's not. Only 3 states of being (without hardware damage), working, soft bricked, and hard bricked.
Working doesn't need defined
Hard brick is missing or corrupted bootloaders, and you get absolutely no response from it whatsoever.
A soft brick is any state where the phone does something, but doesn't boot all the way into Android. So if it was "a heck of a lot more than a soft brick" it would be dead, and you would need to zombify it with unbrickable mod, which isn't the case here. A jig will force download mode in seconds.

Did you buy one prebuilt, or rig one together from capacitors and such?
I just bricked my Captivate using Odin.
It only shows the "phone yellow triangle computer" symbol and isn't recognized by the computer...
I just ordered a jig, hopefully when it arrives in two weeks it will work...
Until then, any options on getting this recognized by my computer so I can try Odin again ?
Thanks.

Make sure the odin is ready, pull your battery, plug your usb into your phone, hold both volume up/down, and reinstall your battery.
Don't freak out, it's going to come back up as the same screen this time, this screen will keep showing until you have a succesful flash, but your device should now show up on Odin.

Open Odin as admin, hold the two volume buttons of your phone, plug in the microusb cable, press "start" on Odin. Most of the time, the phone pc screen can be treated as a download screen.
I had a similar problem once, and I could've stop panicing! Just calm down and try what I said. I don't think that a Jig is necessary in your case.
An update, nothing worked on my phone, no button combinations, nothing at all, it just never would show up in Odin for me to reflash...got my jig in the mail finally and it did the trick within seconds. The phone is totally recovered now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Today while using my one that is rooted with trickdroid 8.0.0 turned off at around 40% randomly, The screen froze at the lockscreen and I when put it to charge the orange light did not appear. I cannot reboot into recovery from the phone nor from adb. When plugged in the computer it is read as QHUSB_DLOAD. Any advice on how to fix this?

QHUSB_DLOAD usually means a hard-brick. Does it power on at all? You might try leaving it plugged in overnight, but I suspect your phone just died.

It does not power on at all. My battery was at ~40%. Is it possible for the phone to just turn off like that at that percent?

I haven't seen it on the One, but it was a real problem with the One XL. Phones would just drop to 0% charge and die for no apparent reason. Not pleased to this happening on the One.

Before it died. I unlocked the phone and the only thing I could do was pull the notification drawer down. It would not let me open any app or even the app drawer.

Read the HTC Unbricking Project thread, the problem is HTC phone wide so I see no reason why the fix wouldn't also be. At the very least give that thread a read, you've got nothing to lose.

That fix is only for a couple of specific issues:
Note: This will fix only devices which were bricked by turning S ON. And bricks caused by a damaged hboot via interrupted OTA update/RUU flash on a S-ON device. Any devices bricked with other ways are currently *not* supported. We are working on it

People tried it on the One XL/Evita when this happened, and it didn't work, unfortunately. Note that the method requires the battery to be removed.

I've only had the phone for 2 months and it already bricked. It shouldn't be a problem explaining it to AT&T and getting a replacement right? I mean if I can't turn it on they can't turn it on.
Had the same problem after flashing the wrong recovery..
THis means it is hardbricked and unrecoverable..
You could ask here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43750389#post43750389
Else send it in for repairs

It's a hardware fault, from everything I've seen, and HTC or AT&T should replace it. AT&T tends to be very easy about this. If the phone won't power on at all, they shouldn't give you a hard time.
My brother just bought a new in box Moto X off eBay (ruling out any warranty) about a week ago. Today it asked to update the OS, which he accepted. During the update (green android robot with blue swirly thing inside) the phone simply blinked off and ceased to respond. And I mean NO response. I don't get LED's, boot, fast boot, recovery, charge, ANYTHING. Plugging it into a computer also gives no response.
My bro didn't take note of the OS that it was updating to, but it was just an OTA. He had no suspicious apps, hadn't played with ROM's, just barely had his phone working before this happened.
I spent a long time googling for this same problem, but no results. Everyone at least gets SOME response out of their phone. I can't imagine this is a hardware problem, and I'm certain he had plenty of charge when he initiated the update (only half a day of use on the charge, should have been at %50-60 on the low side).
Anybody have an idea on how to proceed? Any info would be greatly appreciated, even a link to a helpful thread that I missed.
Phone is a 1st gen (2013) Moto X on AT&T.

I'm in the same boat... I recently bought a Moto X (2013) on eBay and having had the Atrix HD previously, I thought rooting should be simple.. yeah, no, it wasn't... i'm now hard bricked. I followed a guide about updating the driver and using the program that tricks the driver signing, and it all went as stated, except the phone still won't turn on. Adb can't see it, neither can mfastboot.. RSD Lite does see it tho it fails flashing.. I don't know what to do.. I don't have much $ and I had just saved up for awhile so any help would be appreciated
Brett and Elisha, are you running Windows? If so, when you connect your phone, does Windows chime as if it recognizes something is connected via USB?

I started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/moto-x-root-pogress-60-t3071602
After step 3, manually installing the unsigned drivers, I had to follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-unbricked-hard-bricked-phone-t3146036
I skipped to "Now software part. Go to unzipped C:\Python27 folder, launch bat-file, and wait until finish:
RUN_blank_bootloader_flash.bat"
It took a bit of time, but the phone rebooted and I am rooted.

There's a thread on this forum titled 'Resurrecting a dead Moto X'. It describes your scenario in detail and explains a way to fix it.
Hello everyone,
I have a moto x xt1092. I flashed the us firmware and converted it to xt1095. all has been running perfect for 3 weeks or so. Today, my battery was low and the phone died. after about 10 mins I put it on charging, let it charge till the battery was 15%. I turn it on, the phone does turn on, all boot animations and all come, but after the motorola boot animation the display goes blank. I press and hold the power button, the option of turning the phone off comes up, nothing else. This has happened twice before, and after 5-10 mins the display starts working normally. But now, it isnt. PLease help me with the same.
ALso, the phone is getting very hot at every boot.
I have tried wiping the caches.
Flashing the firmware again is my last resort cuz i do not want the data deleted.
Thank you for your time
There is only one way to fix this. You have to factory reset the phone.
If you have a custom recovery installed you can use it to backup your files before you factory reset the phone.

I flashed the firmware again. It is working fine now though I lost the apps and their data. Also, an idea what may have caused this, so I take precautions from next time?

Almost every time I have seen the problem someone says "my battery died". So my suggestion is to hold your power button when your battery is super low and then press power off to shut it down safely. It's just like a computer if the battery dies while the computer is in use it can cause damage.

Just like another user on the forum, I have a dead screen and solid blue LED always on. Is there a way to use ODIN or some other software to access the phone data via computer to backup data and also wipe? Phone is bone stock.
Thanks!!
You can try to use sidesync on the PC to connect to the phone and display it's screen on the pc to control it that way...
That would be awesome but wouldn't I need access to the phone to install sidestep and run it before I could control the phone from my pc?

Hello android geniuses! My cousin has this exact same problem right now, I came here as a last resort looking for a solution.
He broke his screen and lcd while drunk and he has insurance, but is worried about sending the phone in to be fixed/replaced because he has incriminating texts about buying drugs etc on the phone.
Is there a way to factory reset the phone with the screen broken?
My sonly uggestion atm is to reboot into recovery and try to factory reset based upon copying the button presses of a youtube video. He does not have usb debugging enabled and we can't even manage to explore his files through windows.
Thank you if you even read this, I am super grateful for any suggestions
Edit: We factory reset the phone through android device manager. OP, that might be your best bet too mate.
