[Q] Nexus 6 Not getting LTE AT ALL - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm using my nexus 6 which I bought in Asia (as far as I know, there's is no different variant that supports different bands when it comes to the nexus 6) in America with T-Mobile as my provider. I'm getting good signals, however I have never gotten LTE. I thought it was my APN problem, so I changed my APN according to T-Mo's website but still nothing. I then wiped my phone, flashed a new rom and flashed two different radios with clean wipes in between (MDM9625_104651.11.05.17R and MDM9625_104649.09.05.14R), nothing. I then changed my sim with my brothers sim which is getting LTE on the Nexus 5 (we live in the same apartment and run the same data plan), still the same.
Under phone testing, (*#*#4636*#*#), it shows I have HSPAP, but when I change to LTE Only, I get no service AT ALL. It turns into only emergency calls.
Does anyone know what I can do to diagnose or check?
Any answer is appreciated. Thank you!

sure.. which version of n6 do you have? sounds like you have the international version, which isnt made for the US, nor does it do american lte bands.

[Q] Nexus 1 stuck on Edge signal

I just purchased a rooted Nexus 1 from eBay. It came with Cyanogen 6.0 RC3. 5.08 radio. I noticed it was always displaying an E for edge signal. I went into the phone menu (*#*#4636#*#*) to set it to WCDMA Only. It then would not get a signal at all. I set signal back (WCDMA perfered) and Flashed Cyanogen ROM again with 4.06 Radio. I still get only EDGE. I have another Nexus 1 and it goes between H and 3G (HSPA is active in my area). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how to fix?
One is AT&T band and another is T-Mobile band, perhaps?
No they r for T-Mobile. The problem is it only shows edge and never 3g like it should.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Try flashing back to stock to see if it keeps doing that.
Did you check settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks "use only 2g networks" unchecked. I assume you did since you know the (*#*#4636#*#*) method, but maybe someone else will read this who needs it. If that doesn't work I would test an ATT sim card to clear my curiosity.

Yes I did check this. What will testing phone with ATT sim card do? Phone is advertised as unlocked and rooted. What am I missing?
For 3g, T-Mobile USA exclusively uses the AWS 1700/2100 MHz frequency-band, and ATT uses the 850/2100 MHz band, so a special batch of N1's were made for ATT with different hardware. If a friend's ATT sim card picks up a 3G signal, it means you can't pick up T-mobile usa.
You said the phone was advertised as unlocked and rooted. The thing to check would be to ask if the phone is compatible with ATT's 3G bands or T-mobile's 3g bands. "Unlocked for all GMS carriers" for example, only tells you that it works on all EDGE networks. I haven't seen a Nexus One that can run both 3G networks, but they may exist. (Was there anything in the ad specifically about the 3g bands?)
The ATT Nexus One is more rare, you may be able to sell or trade with someone in the marketplace here on xda or on the internet somewhere.
Sanity check: shut down the phone, take off your battery cover, remove the battery and tell us the FCC ID. It's in the second of three lines of text below where the barcodes are.
My AWS (T-Mobile) Nexus One says:
FCC ID: NM8PB99100
If you have the AT&T version it should say:
FCC ID: NM8PB99110
Note the single-digit difference. If you have the AT&T version you'll want to trade it with someone else who has the T-Mobile version in order to get 3G. If this is the case, you're in luck, because the AT&T version is discontinued and lots of people would be very happy to obtain one from you.

Thanks for the information. You hit the nail on the head! The phone is marked as one of the early AT&T Unlocked models. I also had one of my friends put his AT&T card in the phone and it picked up 3g just fine. I spoke to seller of this phone on ebay and he said he would take item back. IS THERE ANY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM SO THAT PHONE WILL WORK ON T-MOBILE?

hello there, I would be interested in trading you that att nexus for my tmobile nexus one. Please let me know if you are interested, text @ 801-228-0176

hmm...I don't think so.
Take it back to the seller or trade with someone
As many already stated in the thread (starting with me), you have AT&T Nexus, and there is NO WAY to make it work with T-Mobile. But, as also stated, you're lucky - lot of people will probably be happy to trade with you or buy it from you.
I just got a flawless AT&T Nexus One for next to nada $150 from a guy that heads up the IT department at a hospital, he had bought over a dozen f them and I mistakenly thought that since they were Google Nexus devices and since I had a "android data plan" and because I could make and receive calls and get on the web that all was good! What I didn't realize is that I'd be stuck on EDGE for good, they only real downside is that I cannot be on a call and surf the web at the same time, I'm just glad I got a pristine phone that's outta warranty, and running 2.3.6 (stock) and for only $150! Also I've always been a physical keyboard guy, so darn I get EDGE... I run the fastest web on my WEP encrypted network at home and hop on the VPN network at school, and now that the bastards at TMOB don't offer (unlimited) I really don't use alot of data anyways cause I don't goto social networking sites neways!
Any one wanting to trade a TMOB NEXUS ONE for a ATT NEXUS ONE??

[Q] xt1053 on AT&T - No LTE after update to 5.1

I have a T-Mobile retail 1st gen ( xt1053 ) that has been on AT+T since new with no issues. Now, since updating to the OTA 5.1 I've lost LTE. I get 4G, but I've confirmed I'm getting HPSA+ speeds only, and the notification lists "4G" whereas before the update to Loillipop it specified LTE. I've kept it stock since the update and everything else works, just no LTE.
Again, before the update I *did* get LTE. I've read about AT&T needing to "provision" an account for LTE, and that maybe this wouldn't be automatic if you were using a non-AT&T phone, but since i had LTE before with this phone, and the only change was the update, I don't know if that could be the issue.
Anybody else run into this ?

Unfortunately don't know the reason for that, would think something in the settings, or some update to the modem/radio?
But do have a question -my friend has the same phone Retail XT1053 using AT&T, but doesn't get LTE, at least wasn't before 5.0, will assume still not.
Wondering if you had to change any settings to get LTE -AT&T said it's not possible on that phone, but did see some posts in the past about changing some settings to get LTE (i.e, settings under data to automatic, etc) but his doesn't have the options mentioned.
Hope you get it figured out, will be interested, too
Family has 4 XT1053's on AT&T for the past 15 months and we all get LTE. Didn't have to do anything special. They put nano SIMs in our phones at one of their company retail stores, and it just works. Was roaming in Canada last week on Rodgers, and got LTE there as well. Don't remember having to do anything with the APN setting either. The XT1053 is missing one of the AT&T LTE bands which is on their model, but didn't think they were using that band in the US yet. Maybe that has changed and that band is used in your area. None of us have upgraded to 5.1 yet so can't comment on changes from the new OS.

When I switched from my Galaxy S2 on AT+T to the xt1053 I didn't have to change anything. I did have the same issue for a few days, but then one day LTE was there. Since the S2 was a non-LTE phone I just figured there was something that needed to happen on the backend for AT&T to enable it. If you search online there are numerous people having the same issue for multiple phones - usually non-AT&T specific unlocked models. Some people claim AT&T support was able to do something for them, others say that putting their SIM in an AT&T branded phone let it "register" and after that they got LTE. I didn't have to do either, it just came on after a couple days. I was about to go to the nearest AT&T store, but then LTE started working.
So...I don't know what the real fix was back then. Since I get good enough speed to stream, which is all I need, it's not critical, just annoying. It's been 2 weeks since I updated, so I'll probably head to the store this weekend to see if they can help.

Thanks. I went with the friend that has the XT1053 to a company AT&T store, showed them my phone, too, which is an AT&T branded XT1058 with LTE -he did seem a bit confused, but claimed mine could because it was AT&T branded, that his didn't support the bands for LTE but obviously people are able to get LTE on the XT1053 with AT&T
And once again LTE appeared without me doing anything. This time it just took longer than when I originally got the phone. Today ( 3 weeks exactly after flashing the OTA Lollipop update ) it decided to connect via LTE and not "just" 4G. As I said in the original post, back when I first got the phone ( Xmas 2013 ) it look 2 or maybe 3 days before it connected to LTE.
I just wish I knew what the trigger was.
Anyway, working now.

SM-N950F Slow Network Speeds On AT&T

Hey there fellas! I recently purchased an international Galaxy Note 8 to use on AT&T here in the U.S. Everything appears to work fine except the speed of my network. Normally in this area I would be getting LTE speeds around 30-40 up and down. With the Note 8 is displays H+ (which I understand to be LTE, but I may be wrong) and I get around 5-7 down and often less than 1mbps up. Some have suggested setting the preferred network time to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) which was already selected on my device. Is there anything else I can do to get the proper speeds? Thanks!

On all of my international versions H+ was 3G and 4G was LTE. Depending on the area with 4G I would get 20 - 50 megs down on AT&T. On my 950U1 my settings under #*#*4636*#*# I have TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS selected by default and mine shows LTE and depending on the area up to 100 megs down.
H+ is 3G, or 3.5G for some carriers

Ah, that would explain why my speeds are so slow. Thank you for clearing that up. I attempted to select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network mode but for whatever reason it will not apply. When I reopen that settings menu it goes back to whatever option was selected prior to that. Do you think it could have something to do with the selected APN? I have ATT Phone as my current APN, but at the store they were trying to use ATT Nextgenphone, which didn't work.

I would do all I could to get the Nextgenphone APN working. It is what I used on all my international phones.
Took the Note 8 into the AT&T store today and swapped out the sim card without any luck. As usual they couldn't provide any help beyond that. I also I can't select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network type for some reason. I contacted the person I bought the phone from and they claimed they used it on Verizon's LTE network without an issue. Very strange.

Would you mind sharing what your CSC on your Note 8 is? I might end up flashing whatever firmware your phone is using, as mine is currently running a firmware for French phones. Not sure if thats the issue, but its possible.

When your look for the firmware look for 950U1 for AT&T. I would look around for a thread on flashing other regions first just to be safe.

I may be totally off here, but wouldn't that be an issue as the AT&T variant uses a Snapdragon SoC, while my device uses Exynos? Another concern for me would the ability to root as well, which is one of the reasons I decided not to buy an AT&T branded phone. Thanks for your help so far man, I appreciate it!

You are right. There is no AT&T firmware for your phone. Unless they changed something with the Note8 you should still be able to get 4G. I did with my international Note4, Note5, and Xperia Z5 Premium models. My son is using the Note5 with an Exynos processor and gets 4G speeds comparable to LTE speeds in the area.
Had this problem as well way back when I first got my 950F.
There are solutions. But you would need one of 2 things.
1. Get At&t to add your IMEI# TO their database so that they can provision your phone correctly.
2. Get another At&t branded phone's IMEI# that is LTE COMPATIBLE. and call them to provision you phone with that #.
My phone is getting full LTE speeds and VOLTE.
But I had them put in the IMEI# of my older Note 5!( which my wife is currently using)...
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I called ATT and gave them your suggestion and they claimed that it would not work. They said provisioning my new phone with an IMEI of a different phone would be temporary up to 2-3 weeks. Have you encountered this issue? I'm assuming not, so I'm curious as to how long you've had this fixed. Thanks again man

N950N Olympics Edition on UK carriers

Is anyone using this phone on a UK carrier without any mods at all?
This is the KT branded/unlocked version gifted to athletes.
I don’t care about WiFi calling, just wondering if it will work well on any UK carrier without my having to do anything to it.
Thanks....

It should be fine if the basebands match.
Find the baseband of the network you want to use, (so for 3g I need baseband 2100 and for 4g I need 900)
In the link below you can then compare it to your model (I will assume its the same as the U version despite the KT)
If the baseband matches for 3g you will only get 3g or visa versa. Hopefully they will match for both 3 and 4g.

On paper, this phone has all the necessary bands to work on TMobile USA but a test at one of their stores with an active SIM didn't have good results. Although the phone displayed LTE, outgoing calls took between 40 and 60 seconds to initiate dialing out, and SMS texts would not go out at all (or if they went out, they didn't arrive at destination phone).
I travel frequently to the UK so I was just hoping that this phone would work out of the box with a UK SIM with no need for mods....

Seeing as the N950N is GSM device, you should have no issues using it with any UK cell provider.

You would need to contact T-Mobile or visit their retail branch and have them add your devices IMEI# on their network. For some strange reason some networks require that...
It should work in the UK no problem. Go-to thr Samsung website and it shows all the bands for your specific model (950N) and cross reference it with the ones used in the UK. I think you'll find it's all there. No need to over think it.

Thanks. For some reason, although Tmobile USA has all of the required bands, this phone will not work properly on their network without mods.

Is it working ok for you? Also I have a question, what software version are you on? I'm on the Oreo update but still on the April patch? I am trying to see if anyone has a newer software patch that they have got. I find it strange that I haven't had any updates in 3 months.
Hi. I arrived in London on Sat 7/21... phone would only receive 2G (phone displayed E) and occasionally 3G. I stopped by Vodafone shop and they confirmed all settings were correct. I went across the street to EE and tried one of their sims, strong 3G but nothing better. As I was going to Cardiff for a few days, I used the Microsoft 950XL that I have which receives 4G and better (often displays 4G+).
Not sure what the next step is...
Regarding updates, the last one I got installed Oreo 8.0.0 and Samsung Experience 9.0 on May 24, 2018. Last security patch date is April 1, 2018.

Have you tried the reset network with the Sim in now you are in the UK? That sounds like what happened to me, would only get 3g until I would reset the network with the Sim in. I once tried to put in another Sim and when I put my EE Sim back in I had to reset the network again. I'm even in Germany now for the past week and I get LTE here as well.
Ok thanks, we are on the same security patch. But I would think that we would get updates that are newer than that. On Reddit people are already talking about getting thier July updates, while we are still on the April update.

note 9 verizon vs note 9 tmobile

I have an up to date verizon note 9 although still paying for it I had it on their service for over 6 months so legally allowed to use on another service currently using it on cricket with no issues other than no VOlte which I've never had with cricket no matter what phone because I won't use the phones they have because I don't like them but that's another story....Since I can't get volte on my Verizon model note 9 that's fully updated for US I was wanting to switch to tmobile...I was set up with a sim card on their magenta plus plan worked great till I got to my home which is in a more rural area but did show verified coverage at driveway on their map I had no signal so I went to settings searched for mobile networks found tmobile listed registered and it connected like 2 bars LTE but within min lost service did it again lost service again while I had lte I was able to call and use data...so my question is could this be me using a verizon phone for it not latching on by itself or holding the signal I know note 9 has the 600mhz band but was wandering if I went ahead and got a tmobile phone if it would actually latch on and hold the signal that Verizon's addons and changing is playing well with tmobile...UNLESS someone can tell me how to get VOlte on cricket with this note 9 then I wouldn't need tmobile then 3g calling has went to crap over a year....thankyou for any input

All N960U and N960U1 devices are EXACTLY the same. The only difference between the devices is software.
Flash the software for the carrier your running including the Userdata for you Note 9. It should work for all features especially on T-Mobile. T-Movile fully allows unlocked devices on their network whereas Verizon doesn't. I'm pretty sure at&t is like Verizon through when it comes to unlocked devices, and they own cricket so that rule probably trickles down to them as well.
You can get all carrier version of software for your Note 9 on samfirm or sammobile

But my question would be would my phone latch on to tmobile towers using tmobile firmware better than my current state using verizon firmware I'm excluding wifi calling and volte just trying to determine if I would have a difference in service availability picking up towers and holding them with stronger lte signal or if it's just poor coverage both ways and will be no different than you for your advice as well

You will not have a difference in coverage. T-Mobile did the same thing with where I live and listed it on their map as being fully covered. I barely get LTE at my house or anywhere in my neighborhood.

You will never know until you try it, so why not try it and find out? Make it an SM-N960U1. Debloated and ready to go with any sim you install. Flash the unbranded firmware that can work on any of the US providers. That's what I have, and when I loaded a T-Mobile sim, I got VoLTE and wifi calling. I've run a lot of custom firmwares in the past, but this is the best phone and firmware combo I've ever had. And it's pure stock.
Also, this stock One UI with dark mode is very slick. VERY! No Substratum, no themes, no fuss. Just clean and black.

His goal is better service reception.
Only the carrier can fix that by actually providing the coverage they put on their maps.

Lots of people have reported better or worse quality service, all other things equal except for firmware/software: different radios enabled/disabled; different optimizations. I just read another thread where someone got better tmobile reception at his house after flashing tmobile software over US unlocked software. There are more variables than just the carrier side of things.

Thankyou then that kinda answers my question that although phones are equal between verizon version and unlocked internally and firmware being the difference that using a tmobile phone with their firmware I'd stand the best chance of service and since my area uses extended range area I would probably have a better experience than on my note 9 verizon...thankyou again

Yes. I think it may make no difference at all, or it might (much to gain, but nothing to lose), but most of the evidence in these forums, when it comes to connection quality, is extremely variable and anecdotal. Nobody can know an answer to this kind of question, unless they test it out for themselves. Good luck!
