Hey guys, today i ordered myself an S5 and it's arriving tommorow morning. I can't wait to get it. I immediately fell in love with hardware, and the phone looks beautiful. Only thing i don't like is TouchWiz. So since the moment i knew i was gonna have it, i came here, and i must say i'm suprisedi expected the development to be beyond point of view good thing we have offical cyanogenmod(that was expected tbh) but i also expected something of CAF and aosp base since s5's predecessors had great AOSP ROMs support, like Slim and Omni and PA. Well who knows. Maybe i finnaly start learning something new and hell, maybe try to cook something but knowing myself, i wont have the guts.
Also i always wanted to try the famous Boeffla kernel and now i'll finaly have the chance!
You'll be hard-pressed to find a ROM that runs as fast/smooth/efficiently as the stock rom (once it's debloated, of course). There are plenty of ROMs available, it's just that not all of them are available on XDA. Try one of Ground-Zero's ROMs. Tesla and TipsyOS are very good.
(P.S. TipsyOS uses boeffla by default)

I ran tesla on my moto g, pretty good. But i don't know, i used to hack older samsungs, the newest was s4, so i'm a bit scared, i dont know whats KNOX or what's the procedure to root/flash recovery on this phone and how dangerous it is because i worked with phones that are hard to really screw up, so i'll probably stay on tw and root it.. I don't know yet. Hard to decide since i'm a flashaholic..
KNOX is the new warranty killer, flash anything custom and it trips KNOX from 0x0 to 0x1, which is irreversible, when you need to send your S5 in for repair, they check the KNOX status and refuse warranty in many regions if it is 0x1
Other than that, it's just a useless annoyance
Read some threads, you'll find all the info you need about rooting/hacking the S5
Pretty simple procedure if you don't care about warranty, or live somewhere that doesn't use KNOX status (EU apparently)

Well i live in europe and i bought an european version (obviously) and i don't even know what for i'd send it for warrianty, hardware failures don't cover it do they? And KNOX is not reversible in any way? And there is no way to flash over it? I think i saw a thread today regarding that..
The issue with the S5 is that there are no base roms made available to beginner developers. Everything is based on Cyanogenmod which has issues like Bluetooth and such. I ported Omni rom a while back so it can be available to others to try. Everything is working perfectly besides the camera which I haven't quite figured out yet. No Bluetooth issues, great battery, & nice performance. I plan on porting that new paradox ROM to our beloved device soon so hopefully we can get some development going.

Of course warranty covers hardware failure, that's what warranty is for
And no, there is no way to reset KNOX

Wow that sounds awesome, and where we could find that omni of yours? And Aosparadox was originally created for moto g, and i was one of the first who tried it. Good rom, and i think that AOSP based roms would be great on this phone, is it only me?

G900F - others are limited/locked
In my opinion, this is a great phone. I had an S2 and now i have a G900F. I love the feeling with this, resistent, lightweight and not so big but with a beautiful screen...i hate samsung policy but not all samsung is bad. Flagships are still remaining the main phones to buy if someone wants a good experience. I like flashing roms but with latest firmwares i prefer remaining near o stock. I tried some custom roms based on CM, ok they are very fast but i missed a lot of stock features that i use, and i like to have always them with me instead of trying to find an alternative way. We listen all the time people complain about phone's problems but personally i think less people say "wow, great phone, etc" only because it hasn't the need to say this, only complain...

Awesome man, and i have one more question.
Is triggering KNOX worth it or not in your opinion? Others? I want more opinions on this
Other official roms such as? Everything right now is based off Cyanogenmod so that means there is no variety. Other phones usually have roms built off of cm,omni, aosp,PA,aokp ect ect If we are able to port these roms such as Omni people can add to them and make custom and stable roms out of them

Exactly we need someone to port AOSP or something close enough to it so we can then port roms such as PA and slim without basing it off cm and having tons of issues...
Well if you try to port Aospparadox you could rebase omni to it's source and then build PA and slim and other roms

Well it doesn't cover hardware failure when you trip knox. Perhaps if the phone don't start at all and they cannot check for knox status.

Worth it if you never need the warranty, or live in the EU and they don't care about KNOX

Obviously if you live somewhere that KNOX needs to be 0x0 for warranty, but otherwise the warranty is completely valid for hardware failure, tripped or not

Galaxy s2 and s3 have all put their hands on the new 4.1.2 beta, waiting anxiously now for my i9305 international version. anyone has update on this? :fingers-crossed:
Doubt this will happen, they are just too different from what I remember in prior discussions.
We should have something pretty soon for our phones tbh.
On another note, I have been using it on my 9300 for a few days and it seems a great improvent, it is good on battery, there are lots of little improvements including the Samsung Keyboard where the word appears automatically as you type. Multi WIndow is great although not sure how much I will use it, still it is there if I want it!
Really looking forward to 4.1.2 coming over to the 9305.
I have played around with it. The only issue I am having is with the baseband and imei not being detected. Have tried a few things to fix it but am stuck at the moment with what else to try. Other than that it boots, has root and everything else works.

Chiming in here to say that I have been working on this too. But you knew that from our discussions via PM.
I am wondering if we might be able to get the ball rolling further on this for our devices. There are considerable differences between these devices but that shouldn't stop us.:fingers-crossed:
On another note I am thinking the AOSP is the secret to bringing more popularity to this device seems alot of people are waiting for this and keep asking for this,,, So i am thinking of porting an AOSP rom for fun and chucking it in for a variety
mmm not sure about that, I think the new 4.1.2 features outweigh a AOSP release; MultiWindow probably beign the biggest so as soon as 4.1.2 hits here I think there will be some very happy people.
Personally, I use lots of the other features like Allshare Cast, Dual View etc... which I believe (not positive though) would be lost with an AOSP build.
Still happy to try it out is you manage to port it over!
yes i would not use the AOSP but CM has a MASSIVE fan base and so does AOSP... But I agree with you 4.1.2 is much better but even this version has now been merged with AOSP in the i9300 forum lool we need more devs here its too hard to keep up with little help
Devs or no Devs i am still very happy with this device and would not swap it back with the one i had before, which i gave to my mother as a gift But yehh If i really wanted too i can swap it .. But no thanks
I recently rooted and I'm still using the stock rom since I bought my phone in the last week, so I'd like some opinions on why should/shouldn't I move to a custom rom like InsertCoin or Viper.
Thanks!

Cons
No more warranty
No more support from carrier/HTC
Non-final software can be buggy
Pros
Support from online communites (aka XDA)
Access to updates way quicker
Features are added
Complete customization
That little feeling of ****ing around for 12 hours because you want everything to be perfect
There are different kinds of ROM as well, some are based on the pure Google Experience, others improve the HTC-made Sense. Personally I like the look of Sense and wanted my phone to pretty much stay the same, so I went with Android Revolution. Another popular project is ViperROM but I am not familiar with that one.

Rooting doesn't void your warranty unless the manufacturer can prove that whatever problems you have were caused as a direct result of you rooting. I.e if you have a defective camera from the beginning and root your phone, the manufacturer is still obliged to recognize your warranty because the problem was nothing to do with you rooting. Similarly, if you flash a volume booster and blow your speaks out, your warranty will be void because you caused the problem.

Have you been in a cave...LOL...Just Kidding. Welcome to the new At&t Samsung way. LOCKED BOOTLOADER
FOREVER.
Unless we some how get a Loki workaround, we will never have custom kernels.
Big Name ROM? Lets give credit to the devs we do have - giving their time for our device and only TouchWiz.
Damn...I just found out about towelroot and I was so excited about finally being able to wipe my phone clean with a cool big new rom. No offence to the little devs, but it's just not the same, ya know?

I'm thankful for the devs who are giving their time, but I look for roms with the features I want and need, not by who the developer is. Let's help these guys become "big devs" by supporting their work.
My point is, all of the ROMs available look and function pretty much exactly like stock except they have bugs. Big name ROMs have tons of features and few bugs as well as completely changing up the stock experience. It's a shame, but I'm just going to go back to stock because all of the ROMs out now are (to me) no different than stock and filled with bugs.

Not true, Vision is stock all the way, I just changed the stock look a little, everything works PERFECT. I agree, you start modding the phone with a bunch of non-needed mods that btw, xposed can handle, it tends to have issues. This exactly why I built Vision, for this purpose.
Give it a try. You will not be disappointed.:good:

I don't understand how one can say CM or any AOSP or AOKP Rom are bug free if that was the case then why nightlies? I've flashed MANY AOSP Roms on my S2 S3 and S 4 and never found one "bug free". Now development is just beginning for the AT&T S5 and whether there's a loki exploit or something like it remains to be seen, however, there will be and already are themers and modders working to give us choices.
I prefer T/W for the stability and and really "bug free" experience. Hence no need for nightlies.

I'm curious, what exactly is a "Big Name" ROM? I have been Devin for a long time AOSP, AOKP, CM, SENSE, and currently TouchWiz (which by the way is actually very stable model or not). There isn't even a stock oob firmware without bugs if there was there would be no updates or patches from oem.
I appreciate your wanting a highly themed ROM however, during early stages most devs look to take care of opening things up and enabling what was removed or disabled. Personally I leave the heavy modding and style changes to the themers.

Would such a thread be allowed here? Most other device forums have such a thread and it serves as a general OT thread to cut away the number of created threads. I searched briefly before starting this and did not come across anything similar.

They both have their pro`s and cons. CM is not pure AOSP either as isn`t TW as they are both heavily modified. I love the Samsung camera software which makes great pics. The CM ones are ok but in quality their less than sammy`s. The XtreStolite as i have it is 650MB as i have some TW modules flashed that i wanted. Performance is great and batterylife is very good, its about on par for performance but less batterylife on CM. Its all about preference off course but in usability/compatability TW is the winner imo.

I like the fingerprint too much. I have a need for security and like it to be quick. Its more reliable than face unlock. Plus its one of the unique features that won me over from the z2 which I very nearly got, I wish they would've used open sources. I feel like I'm having a break from CM after using it for so long, touchwiz is forgiving enough to use this time around, and I still get a taste of aosp when I use my nexus 7. Now do I flash L or not? I have a deb and L has no working data. I don't actually use a sim in it hardly it just happens to be the device I could get credit on. My problem is I have OCD and if I know something is not working it will bug the hell out of me even if I don't use it. But im dying to taste lollipop!

I'm like that too, if something doesn't work I'm bothered immensely by it, even if I don't specifically use that feature. Luckily, everything seems to work on CM. Maybe not as well as on TW, but they still work.

It works well for me after training it a few times. I notice cases with a lip require special technique to get a full swipe. A touch sensor would work better but they avoided getting sued yet again by the control freak idea stealing/patenting that is apple, so they used swipe like the atrix. I would have used that as a court weapon to exploit apples "originality". Get that finger scanner working and I will happily ditch TW

I would have used that as a court weapon to exploit apples "originality". Get that finger scanner working and I will happily ditch TW

Couldn't have said it better myself. A work mate I got into our current employer from our previous unreliable job switched from samsung s2 to Iphone 5s and now loves it. He laughs at the size of my s5. Whats most annoying is that he bases his preference on how the phone feels. Put a one m8 or galaxy alpha in his hands please
The only thing that's getting to me is the Knox flag, I know it doesn't hinder warranty in e.u etc etc, but not being able to put the phone fully back to stock is getting to me

Screw knox. I'm experiencing some reboots and even happened once before rooting. I have every intention of sending it back with a detailed letter of my usage, mods and findings to prove that my meddling is not to blame. I noticed that undervolting made it 10 times worse, perhaps my device needs higher than stock voltage?? At any rate I love this thing so much I've managed to keep in looking like new in a case. I hate cases, the only blemishes are on the battery door from fiddling with the charging cover. Expecting a slim armor tomorrow because the neo hybrids edges are too "square" making it difficult to hold, hope this case is easier to hold

I just have a standard hard rubber case, but I have an excellent scratch resistant screen protector which has so far stood the test of time and stress.
I have a some indents from the time before case but I'd say it was in new shape.
Knox will be 0x1 soon lol

Long time Android user here. I'm debating on whether or not I'd like to pull the trigger and root/flash a custom ROM to my brand new Nexus 6 (seriously, still has that new-phone smell). My girlfriend and I both got these beauties the same day and love them to pieces.
However...
Coming from a rooted/customized S3 and M7 I'm already missing the customization features that rooting devices allowed. Although I wouldn't have any issues doing so, I'm a bit concerned with potential bugs that could occur while using custom ROMs.
For instance, when I bought my M7, before I rooted it, the call quality was phenomenal. Then after rooting/flashing a custom OS, the quality seemed to drop substantially. No matter which ROM/kernel sets I used, there were always data and/or performance issues including, but not limited to, Pandora app skipping even when data (LTE) was at max reception.
I'm not asking which custom ROM is better as that would be a "to each their own" situation. I've, personally, been a fan of Liquid Smooth and ran it as a daily driver for my S3 (and ViperOne for my M7), but from what I've seen in the development pages there are quite a few ROMs I'd like to try out.
I wanted to see what people who've already rooted and flashed custom ROMs thought of their Nexus 6 post-awesomizing. Did the call quality change? Other than listed ROM bugs, were there any frequent issues that continued through various ROMs and kernel combinations?
Thanks, in advance, to anyone and everyone who replies!
Cheers,
Blue

The problem with HTC and Samsung devices, is that they are not truly open source. For a "dev" to get an AOSP ROM built for those devices can be quite an ordeal and can require many hacks to be made and many bugs will be found trying to get the AOSP source code to fit that device... The Nexus does not have this problem as AOSP is designed for it. Even a monkey could compile a bug free AOSP rom for the nexus, so don't worry about that sort of thing.

That's quite a relief to read. So there hasn't been any known issues with the call quality suffering? That is my biggest concern as with my HTC (post root/flash) the call quality was horrendous! It sounded like the person on the other line was constantly mumbling. The quality on the Nexus 6, as of now, is so crisp and clear it sounds as if they're sitting right next to me.
I'll definitely be looking forward to trying out the various ROMs available.

Yep, with a nexus those sort of issues should be a thing of the past. HTC are particularly bad as on teh M7, they themselves couldn't even get GPE to run properly (Speaker quality took a tumble).
Also, you may not know but Xposed framework just came out with an Alpha. In a short while, it wil get more stable and modules will get updated for Lollipop, meaning you will probably be able to add much of that customisation without changing from the stock rom.

I've heard of the manufacturer UI's getting in the way of performance with devices. I'm glad I went with the pure Google goodness this time! I'll keep an eye on Xposed, but I think you've helped my decision in rooting today.
Now to impatiently wait for work to be over and rush home to my laptop!

Good luck.
It is also my personal recommendation that you don't use a toolkit and you use fastboot natively..

It's Nexus man The best dev support is available for Nexus devices All ROMs has bugs and you'll have to bear with it. But the ROMs for Nexus devices meet stable version sooner than others. Taking Parandroid Android as an example. Visit their website and you'll be able to find that the main team focus on the Nexus line and they've legacy team to support other devices. I was also an user of S3 (Exynos variant) and PA used to be a great custom ROM for me

Yes I suppose a caveat to what I have already said, there will still be bugs on roms due to devs making customisations and you will see their bugs potentially. When I say bug free, I'm just talking about a clean AOSP rom affecting the fundamentals of the device.

Yeah. The awesome dev support is the only thing which made me to ditch Note 4 And I'm evidencing that custom ROMs has less Major bugs than stock ROM LOL :silly:

I'm currently running Euphoria OS on my N6. It is based on CM12, and offers a lot of customization options without actually having to enable root. I've been running it for almost a month now, and I have yet to feel a need to go into Developer Options and flip the switch for root access.
From a call quality standpoint, we are all running the same radio versions, so it will come down to your area. I work in an area where T-Mobile is spotty (my building specifically, LTE is stupid fast outside of it) and so I'm eagerly awaiting the update which adds WiFi Calling to AOSP. As it stands now, my phone does activate HD Voice and show an indicator icon in the dialer when I'm on with another T-Mobile user.
Maybe I can use this to convince my girlfriend to let me root hers, as well. She's never had an unlocked device before and she's very cautious about it, but I'm sure I could convince her.
Thanks again, all!
Quick question, does any one have a good recommendation on a guide to root my n6 I don't want to use a tool kit because I'm hearing its better to do root through fastboot if that's correct. I've been rooting phone for some time now but I've only dealt with fastboot once before with an HTC device. All my other devices where s2 to s5. And I usually used chainfires tool kits. So could someone please set me in right direction as far as guides go? Thanks

If you already have TWRP installed, just flash SuperSU. It used to require an insecure boot image due to Lollipop's security features removing root on each boot, but now the new SuperSU injects root each time.

Its pretty simple.
Use fastboot to unlock bootloader (wipes device]
use fastboot to flash TWRP recovery
Put SuperSU zip on sdcard and flash that via TWRP recovery.
There are guides in general. The main thing is understanding using fastboot. I have a thread on that.
Go to general > all in one thread > question 28
Thank you for quick response guys? Rooting today can't take it anymore.

Why do you need a specific custom ROM for many customization when there is Xposed available now?

Well xposed is Alpha - not ready for public consumption.
Also, xposed module features are never as good as ones compiled directly into the ROMs. They're just not as efficient. Xposed doesn't replace the need for custom ROMs.

Well, Xposed is working flawlessly on nexus 5 and 6 without causing any issue That's why suggested Yeah, that doesn't replace the need of custom ROM but that actually add more feature of user's choice
