Hello all, i have thoroughly searched the forum, but what i found sent mixed messages.
I currently own a moto x 2013 and have a pretty tight budget. I have found that the only phone that will fit my needs and is an upgrade is the droid turbo. (Not the moto maxx as it is too expensive)
Now, the problem is that i live outside of the US and i have gotten mixed messages about potential problems activating the phone. I have found a refurbrished unlocked one on ebay, but im afraid that it will not activate without a valid verizon sim card...
Does anyone have experience with this matter?

I use the Droid Turbo on Telcel in Mexico without any issues. It shows a warning about the "sim card not being from Verizon" whenever I reboot, but a quick swipe and it's gone.
It's a truly unlocked phone.

Same here, I'm in Canada, no problem with Virgin or Koodo.
Same here in Mexico, in which country you plan to use it? I think you only need to confirm the bands, the droid turbo does not have it all

Thank you all for your replies! Thanks to you, i ended up buying the turbo and i'm extremely happy with it . All i had to do was activate with wifi and boom, 2g, 3g and lte all with excellent reception!

Guys, would appreciate if someone could help me out here.
Just wanted to confirm the Tmobile and the Developer edition Moto X are basically both compatible with 3g networks around the globe right? Specially in the UAE? The US Nexus 5 apart from the 4g works fine here.
Also, they two (tmobile/developer) are technically the same phones right? The costs now being the same I'm wondering which one to get.

Looks the XT1058 model with the most of the LTE bands but it depends on the firmware.
Be aware that the GSM developer edition is missing band 700 for ATT LTE service. In my area, band 700 is used and I am not receiving LTE. At first I thought there was a problem with the phone but as i traveled yesterday to Indianapolis as soon as I hit Kentucky LTE showed on the gsm developer edition. Am on the fence as to whether I will return it. Did not realize this until I spoke with the local corporate location this morning.

The T-Mobile/Dev Edition are missing Band 5, which is 850mhz. Band 17 is 700mhz, which all the GSM versions support.
The T-Mobile and GSM Dev edition definitely use the same ROM and radio/modems. This is verified by requesting/downloading the firmware from Moto's web site, and comparing it to the retail/consumer rom hosted on http://sbf.droid-developers.org/ghost/list.php and comparing the files included in each.

Really? When it came to LTE bands I thought the T-mo/Dev X was only missing bands 5 & 7 when compared to the ATT variant, and those bands aren't supposed to be used in the USA. (at least that is what John Renaldi of Moto posted on G+ not too long ago.)

That is correct, I missed that one in my post above. Band 7 is 2600mhz and is not used in the US.
Are the available bands hardware or software limited?

I believe the GSM Unlocked device that you can pick from Moto Maker when you don't select carrier, is the same as the T-Mobile USA device, in which case it would be missing bands 5 & 7 when compared to the ATT variant

Well mine picks up LTE on at just fine. I just can't receive MMS for some reason.

Who is your carrier? LTE Band 5 & 7 are rumored to be only used outside the USA, so for "Domestic USA LTE Use" the ATT (after sim unlock), T-Mobile, GSM Unlocked, and GSM Dev editions should all perform the same. The only real difference is lack of HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS(1700/2100) on the ATT model, which the T-Mo and Dev support, and GSM Unlocked should support too.
As for MMS, check your APN settings are correct.

I am on att and I have been through every APN. Check my thread to see everything that's going on.

Just wanted to share my experience on AT&T. Bought a Moto X developer edition from Motorola. Mine works and picks up AT&T LTE without issues. Also MMS works fine as well.
Just make sure you swap your existing SIM card to a brand new one at a corporate store where they actually scan the SIM and enter your IMEI into the AT&T system. Not sure if this was done already in your case. Good luck...

We figured out the problem. Porting a number from straight talk caused the issue. Once I activated a new number on a new Sim everything worked perfect.

I'm thinking of getting the pure in the US and using it up in Canada. Wondering if it'll work. I've heard mixed things about the LTE bands and some saying that 3G won't work at all.

Telus sells the XT1097, your looking at the XT1095 out the US just don't pick the AT&T model as it has a locked boot loader that seems cant be unlocked at all..... The Telus model, supposed to have the quickest updates... well thats a lie.... there is no update as of today... and no indication of when either...
I was able to buy a XT1095. I still haven't received it but now all I can think about is "What if I need to use the warranty for some reason?". Did anyone in Canada have to go through that?

On another thread on this site, someone mentioned that the hardware is the exact same on the canadian model as it is on the pure edition model, the only difference is the firmware. So it seems to me that a radio flash might be required in order to receive the proper bands. I'd love confirmation on this, as I plan on using motomaker in the US to build my phone.

You can't actually change the modem files, you must you the original meant for the phone. The XT1095 supports all of the 2G,3G and 4G bands that Rogers/Bell/Telus/Fido/Virgin/Koodo/Wind/Mobilicity use in Canada. You don't need to do anything but insert your nano sim and possibly program the APN to get network data.

I know the Verizon version has a locked bootloader but Verizon phones do come unlocked. Does anyone know if the 2014 Moto X will work on T-Mobile? I know it has the correct bands but the LTE/HSPA switchoff has issues maybe? I tried searching but couldn't find anything beyond a video saying they could get up to 3G and that was it.
Asking because someone is selling a Verizon Moto X to me for 250 and it seems like a great deal.
I wish I could give you a definitive answer. I had my VZ note 3 running on T mobile with full LTE band 4. I am not sure whether you can add the new VPN without root. Here is the thread for adding the T mobile VPN. Hopefully someone can expand on this

From what I can tell, the CDMA version doesn't have the 1700 band for 4G (HSPA+). Without that, you'll only have 4G (HSPA+) in areas where the 1900 spectrum was refarmed, which is usually major cities. Looks like it definitely has 4G (LTE) on band 4 though.
Short answer: Yes it should work. Also, for 250, you might as well try it and then sell it if it doesn't work out for you.

It should work with either AT&T or T-mobile in the US, but I think the LTE bands are different, so HSPA+ is the best you would do. My wife uses a Moto G on T-mobile HSPA+ and I can't tell a difference between data speed for her and my Moto X on LTE during regular use. Cheapest option (assuming only you on the contract) is probably a T-mobile pre-paid SIM. There is a plan from their website with loads of data, but only 100 min of voice per month for $30. They have several other options.
Not knowing how long you will be here, selling your phone and getting a US Pure model (will also work when you go back to UK) might be the best option.

Was checking if there is any way to get the LTE bands enabled in the US or any network provider who uses similar of most of the LTE bands supported by the UK edition and will manage on 3G for the other duration.

Droid Turbo 2/Moto X Force is Kinzie -- the successor to our Quark.
5.4", 1440p AMOLED display.
The only issue for YOU (a Verizon user) is the Moto X Force does NOT have CDMA nor LTE band 13.

Still have my Turbo as a backup i went out and grabbed the Nexus 6P
Shame to see a Turbo user upgrade.
I still think our phones pack quite a bit of power, and even outperforms quite a few snapdragon 810 devices.
I admit I really like the HTC 10, but my Turbo is still super quick, I have custom ROMs and a wicked battery and won't be parting with it for a long time
