USB tether/Win XP - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I'm trying to help a friend who has just bought the GTi8200N running stock firmware. She has a small notebook running Windows XP. It has an Ethernet network adapter but no Wi-Fi adapter. She also has no available Internet. I'm hoping to tether the Galaxy via USB cable and use the 3G/4G data network.
I have read the instructions for the Nexus here - https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2812516
There is a line in the tetherxp.inf that identifies the hardware. Is it possible to edit that line with the hardware ID for the Galaxy Mini?
I have added the tetherxp.inf file as an attachment (changed file extension to .txt).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

XP does not have WDM support.
Not luck there sorry.

OmegaRed - just because you can post here does not mean that you necessarily should.
The edit was very easy, added these two lines under [AndroidDevices.NT.5.1]
; Lindas phone without adb
%AndroidDevice% = RNDIS.NT.5.1, USB\VID_04e8&PID_6860
; Lindas phone with adb
%AndroidDevice% = RNDIS.NT.5.1, USB\VID_04e8&PID_6863
Now Linda can get the Internet on her Eeee laptop using her Samsung phone, no problem.
For more info, see here - http://karceh.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/how-to-usb-tether-android-phones-with.html

My bad I i'm sorry and made a huge mistake.

If you think i'm evil or something.. go check my posts in the s4 mini section.

Tilt 'HTC USB Modem' driver needed (for Windows XP)

Hi
I am missing the original CD that shipped with my AT&T Tilt Package. Would anyone be kind enough to upload the USB Modem drivers available on the CD please.
I have read the Wiki and I have looked over the forums for it, all I could find were the Vista Drivers for the same, but not the XP divers.
Thanks for looking.
do you have the latest version of Microsoft Activesync installed? If not, you should download it from Microsoft.com and it should be ready to sync.
I do not need ActiveSync
Hi
I already have ActiveSync 4.5 installed. HTC USB Modem drivers are different, they allow the kaiser to act as a dial-up modem that we can connect to a laptop computer.
Although we can use the 'Internet sharing option' in Kaiser for the same purpose, I just wanted to experiment with this alternative.
I am sure the drivers are available on the AT&T CD, I just need someone to upload it here.
IntShrUI
Hey, I have a Tilt too. I was messing around using the Tilt as a modem. I have the drivers, but I couldn't get the Tilt to dial right. I found on this forum a program called IntShrUI. It is in the Windows folder of your Tilt. Just run it and follow the onscreen instructions. You don't have to dial anything. Just plug the Tilt into your computer, click connect on the Tilt, and the internet is up. I can give you more info, I am looking for the thread. I can upload the drivers when I get home too if you want to go that route.
Thanks
Your method of connection is good, but I do not have a data plan. I guess it works if you have a data plan or something.
What I am doing is, I am making a voice call over the GSM network to a free dial-up number. The speeds are VERY slow, about 7-8kbps, but it does work.
Oh and if the number we dial isn't free, then we will be charged for the duration of the voice call. I know its low tech, but its free for me and it actually works.
Thanks for replying.
Sorry, I misunderstood. I used to do that too. Just making a data call to my ISP to get the internet. I will attach the drivers from my AT&T CD. The folder is labeled Vista, but I am pretty sure these are what I used and that they work with XP. I will test it when I figure out where my dumb USB cable went.
Thanks again
Thank you for the drivers jeff. After tinkering a lot with the WModem application, I believe that the HTC Kaiser cannot be used as a conventional dial up modem.
The only way to overcome this problem is to use 'Internet sharing' in Kaiser and specify a connection there itself. The only disadvantage here is, we cannot use the dial up services like NetZero that require us to use their custom dialers.
If anyone has a solution to this, please make a suggestion.
Has anyone tried the Vista 32bit driver on XP? Does it work?
Vista drivers do work
Yes, the Vista drivers work under xp. The kaiser is unrecognized as 'HTC USB modem'. However, as I pointed out earlier, the Kaiser does not behave like a conventional dial up modem. Only if you have GPRS, 3G etc. you can use this method.
I'm in the same boat. I couldn't get those drivers to load.
It's unreal that you can't find USB drivers for this phone anywhere on the Internet for XP.

i don't mean to criticize or anything, but you have a $400 phone, unlimited internet for the phone is like $20, why not just do that? or do pda unlimited for $50 and you get unlimited sms too, i just don't get shelling out a full paycheck for a phone and not the extra few bucks to optimize it

I had no problem getting these drivers to work on Vista and XP. All you need to do is launch Internet Sharing while your phone is connected to the PC, and when the driver prompt comes up, point Windows to the folder where you stored the drivers.
Under Windows XP SP3, I do not even get prompted for drivers, everything loads automatically.
XP 8925(tilt) ICS usb driver
I'm trying to get my 8925(tilt) connected for ICS on my girlfriends' parents' computer running XP sp 1 via usb.
It tries installing a 'generic IRNDS' (something like that), but doesnt work. I couldn't find a working driver, even when I extracted the vista drivers to a folder and tried setting it as the driver for the 8925 in the device manager. All to no avail.
Does anyone know where I can find the XP driver for whatever usb device it would be consider for ICS?
i've got all the tethering plan yadda yadda, I just need it to work, the phone is faster w/ 3g than thier ... !dial-up!!!
Needless to say we watch a lot of Jurrasic Park on VHS in full Dolby Stereo at that household. ha, no really, i need some help with this. please holla back.
@explorer82: go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Add a new modem connection.
Select "Cellular Line" as a modem, input the number, user, pass etc.
Than connect to your computer and activate ICS on your Tilt. This should do it.
@rubicant1982: as mentioned in the 2nd post, you need to install Activesync (free download from Microsoft) to be able to connect to Windows XP.

USB tether help plz

I need some help, I'm trying to tether my phone through USB I know its probably a newb question and I got it to work somehow a while back but never really knew how I did it.
Anyways I reformatted my computer and lost everything I did, now I want to do it again and i can't find anything on the web about a step by step process that is current and up to date as of 27.5.2010.
If anyone knows of any such tutorial or how to I would be elated if you could pass it on. Or if its so easy you can tell me in one sentence I would love that too.
I know everything to do on the phone side,(plug in, settings, wireless, tether (on)) its the computer side i don't know. The stuff I found on it said I needed some driver, and I could get it through the HTCsync application. I have that and installed it but when i plug the phone in and tell it to tether nothing happens.
Thanks.
I have windows XP home. service pack 2
On the Cyanogenmod 5.0.7 you just go to settings --> Wireless & Networks --> [check] USB Tethering then plig it into the computer and it *should* recognize it as a generic network card with np further setup required. Simple as that.

It is as simple as that if you are running vista or win7, however if you are running winXP then you really need to install Microsoft Activesync 4.5. This is what I needed to install for all the drivers to get the usb tethering to work with Cyanogen 5.0.7. Try it and it will connect for you in WinXP.
Tread
Thanks Tread70 I just downloaded Microsoft Activesync 4.5 and it works just fine.
Hey guys, I've looked around and found NOTHING after the problem this guy had, I'm also having issues tethering through USB but I've tried activesync, htcsync, some 3rd party BS, some idiots advice and magical spells. Any one know why I can't possibly tether? I was tethering through wireless since JF builds, but broke my laptop and am using a dell from 2000 with xp sp2. So wireless isn't an option. Thanks guys.

File Transfer over Wireless Internet?

Hi guys. I'm really stuck now.
I have an O2 Stellar that I am trying to retrieve photos from on behalf of a colleague who needs them for work purposes.
The charger port is broken (thanks HTC) but will charge OK, just not be detected by a PC. I can't use an SD card in the device as these are blocked by the security software (which cannot be unistalled). Bluetooth is also disabled as a security protocol.
I THINK I may be able to connect this via Wireless as I can switch this on, and my question is: Can I connect the Stellar to a Wireless network and upload the files to another computer on the same network? Will this work do you think?
I would have tried it already but we don't have a wireless network here and it would mean taking it home to try.

[Q] Windows 7 Tethering Problem

well, i used the search box at least a dozen times to find something relevant to my problem, but i guess no one's posted it yet. if i'm searching/posting in the wrong section, let me know!
I have a dell inspiron 1420 running windows 7 32-bit (even though dell said it wasn't a supported OS ) with windows mobile device center installed. My pure is using the stock rom with internet sharing/tethering unlocked via registry edit.
the problem: when i plug in my phone to use internet sharing, the status will change from 'check usb connection' to 'connected.' after that, the computer will have a solid internet connection for about 30 seconds, and then it'll disconnect (it shows this on both the phone and the computer) and WMDC will take over.
any ideas? thanks a bunch in advance.
anybody? i had thought that at least one person had run into this problem.
are you using the stock rom...or any of the cooked ones here...try with the original one...aslo make sure to update the system, that might resolve it.
disable all other network cards*exept the usb one* solves it for me, it does take a min for my notebook to show that it has internet but it doesnt crash or just stops working..

HTC WP7 USB Internet Tethering - DFRouter

Hello,
I love HD2 and WP7, but I need tethering for my mobile working. I do search all google and XDA but no luck, then I decide to make it one. Lucky is in HTC Mozart have HTC Test tool, after 2 days code and fix driver tethering run well on my HD2 WP7. Then I want to share for you all, use your own risk.
1. Download XAP file in attach
2. Download HTC Sync for Android from HTC for USB Modem driver
3. Deploy XAP file to your phone
4. Turn of your Data conection in your phone.
5. Run DFRouter and click on "HTC Modem"
6. Open your device manager, it will show 2 unknown device, choise device have ID is : USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0EFF&REV_0000&MI_01, update your driver with HtcUsbMdm and you got HTC USB Modem.
7. Make a dial up call from your computer and set it work like other WP7 tethering from samsung or LG.
8. Click "Zune Mode" to come back with Zune Sync.
For dial up make a call *99# with mi_01 id modem. Mi_00 is diag port, maybe have some qualcomm unlock here. Don't forget add +CGDCONT=1,"IP","your apn" in your advance property of modem.
For modem disconnect error let turn of your data connection in your phone, crazy but it work. Not sure it charge or not from your provider.
Wifi have native code too, but need more time to to.
Will update version soon!
Important note: Don't unistall dfrouter before you back to Zun Mode.
I did test it work on my HTC HD2 WP7 and HTC Mozart and my Windows 7 x64, WinXP x32.
Thanks

NO, it's not a stupid question, I can see where the confusion arises: DFRouter ~ Wireless
and YES, it's only USB tethering (for now)
Sounds great, need wifi tethering for WP7
does this work on other htc phones? if so why not put under generic wp7 development? Is there tethering on other wp7 device?
Doesn't works for me.
HTC Sync doesn't see my phone... And If i Go back to Zune mod the device crash !
Has Anyone Any Feedback?
Like many, Wi Fi or USB tethering is an essential functionality of the HD2. Indeed I am using a NAND Android based ROM because I need this functionality to write this reply.
I really want to toy around with WM7 (I have flashed it once and loved it but re-flashed a NAND Android ROM because of the lack of tethering in WM7) so it would good to get some independent feedback on this fix kindly provided by OP.
EDIT: Thanks G-ThGraf - just got in before my post.
My Windows Vista machine, does indeed install all the drivers... Doesnt crash either .... however as mentioned in the explanation it installs a modem, which requires a dial up no.
Unless i'm missing something can it use my 3G connection?
Ta
I have a request. Once the wifi router is made for the wp7, Will the connection be Infrastructure mode?
Great work mate, but is there a way to maka WiFi tether ? Would LOVe to connect my wifi ipad
Hardware Error
Hi,
I am getting a hardware error when trying to connect (Error 692). The Device Manager lists the modem as functional. Windows 7 Pro 64.
Any suggestions?
Regards
Did anyone confirm that this works on HD2 WP7 and if yes, in Windows XP?
Thanks!
Hello,
I've successfully installed the driver (would love to have the driver in a stand alone package), but how to configure the dial up-connection?
And does anyone know what to do to get the usd-drive-mode running?
thanks
All answer in head of thread.
Thanks for all reply.
Thanks dfvn. I just hope that there's gonna be soon some wifi tethering on WP7.
Thank you for your effort. But even i follow the instructions, i am getting the hardware error with code 692.

I get this error too (HD7 + Windows 7 64Bit)... can someone confirm that it works with 64bit windows? Perhaps thats the problem. Or can anyone confirm that it works with hd7?
Don't forget add "+cgdcont=1,IP,yourapn" in your modem advance property.

I've tried every combination (with quotes, without quotes, dial *99#***1#, dial *99#, with dataconnection disconnected and connected end so on), but nothing works.
Can anyone confirm that this works with t-mobile in germany? Or can anyone even confirm that it works with hd7?
thanks
