Is the Bootloader really unlocked??? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just bought the 710 a couple days ago. Its really nice.. not perfect (no quick charge, no usb type c, no front facing speakers) but so many good things... its a basically an ipad mini running android, the ridiculous nice 4:3 screen with navigation on narrow side, really lightweight, 32gb w/ microsd, fingerprint, touchwiz keyboard and most importantly we have twrp already!?! Im really feelin' this over the nexus 9.
Can someone explain to me how this is? Do these devices come with unlocked bootloaders or is this some type of bypass or unlock we have achieved? Just really happy to have such a sweet device with custom rom potential.

The 810 and 710 wifi models do not have locked bootloaders. Bootloaders are locked by request of the carrier. So the LTE models from AT&T and Verizon will probably have locked bootloaders.

Ha I was wondering why root was available already. Glad I picked the wifi only model

Glad I picked up the LTE model for $500 same price as the wifi version and also have root

I wouldn't want to pay for another line with Verizon and I'd have to deal with the bootloader lock

Wifi version wuddn't $500. I got mine for $299 for trading in my original nexus 7 to bestbuy. Deal is still going on. Just need to trade in any working tablet.

Depends on the carrier. AT&T and Verizon lock their bootloaders = no root.

Probably would have gotten a better value selling it yourself. I use swappa to sell my old stuff and always get a great value for it.

to buy or not to buy?? DS7

ok so i am going to check out a DS7 for sale tomorrow. its a t-mob BNIB and was just wondering if i should get the 4G or wifi only? i am using it for my car, as a music/internet/gps devise. i have just found out it is recalled from t-mob and not being sold in stores any longer. i have also heard that there are some problems connecting via wifi, i have an iphone and connect my ipad with now issues. i need some advise on whether or not to buy this DS7. thanks for your advise in advance
For your purposes, I'd get the wifi. Why spend extra on the T-mobile 4g version? + plan?
Also, with the release of new tablets coming, you can
1. get something better
2. get the DS7 for about $200 by Christmas (just an educated guess) when its price falls + coupon. I'm sure Staples will not move these without a discount. People don't like the resolution and viewing angle of the DS7 for $300.

Well thing is, I'm not going to be using it like other people. I am using it only as a controller for my car. I can get this 4G t-mob for less than a wifi only version. My question is, will it affect my usage ability by getting a t-mob vs wifi only? Based on the fact I am only using it via wifi.
I have the wifi only and know that it would work perfect for what you are planning to do. The only thing you have to do is root it and remove the phone apk and telephony apk so that it will not use up your battery.
I don't have the 4g so I cannot give you a comparison.

Hmm well if I can get this 4g one cheaper and I can't get it to work I can always sell it and buy a wifi only version I suppose. I'll go take a look at it and see how I feel. I was thinking if I do get the -mob version I could always just hook it up and use it as intended. But I really would like to learn about rooting and all that stuff. I've been an iPhone guy for so long, this is all so new to me. Lol

If you get the 4G model and remove phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk, it'll work just like a WiFi with those removed. If it's cheaper, go for the T-Mobile one. Actually, just get whichever model is cheaper. Since you'll turn the cell radio off in any case, everything else is identical.

Hi I have just got hold a a DS7 4g.
Question. I am used to routing, have a SGS1 running Darky's Rom and it fly's. This unit out of the box doesnt and the screens not great.
Q Does DJ steves rom make such a difference, and is it stable?
I'm also considering the Sam Galaxy Tab.
Thoughts anyone.
Thanks

Galaxy Tab 7 has a better screen and battery life, and is inferior in every other way (hardware wise). Software wise, the Sammy comes with more bloat (due to TouchWiz), but has far more root/ROM options.
Install a new launcher (I prefer Zeam) to really see how the S7 performs. It's pretty darned quick; it handily outpaces the Galaxy Tab in every way imaginable. I know; I have both. If you can live with the battery life and screen on the Streak 7, I can't imagine why the slightly better modding community on the Galaxy Tab would sway you. After all, the Streak 7 ships with Vanilla Android (just a custom homescreen, Stage UI, on top; not a whole skin like on the GTab).
If you're talking about the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Streak 7's only advantages are the screen size and the price (and 4G, but the Verizon GTab 10.1 will have LTE). The GTab 10.1 is better in every other way.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I must say I like the form factor and the build quality is superb, the standard UI isn'ttoo bad. I guess I'm just spoilt with sammy's amoled screen on my SGS1. Would you say Zeam works better than launcher pro on this device, also have you routed your DS7.

I haven't used LP in a while, so I can't say for sure. If LP lets you set the rows/columns, that's a plus; not sure about speed, though (Zeam is super quick, free, and I've never had a redraw). My S7 is rooted because I couldn't hold out more than a week before rooting my device Just use Gingerbreak if you want to root; easy-peasy.
Ok so I bought the DS7 but it won't see my iPhone that is jail broken and running mywi to use as hot spot. Any words of wisdom? Should I just root it and be done with it? I'd like to install a mobile front end and use it as my all around car system. Thanks guys

[Q] Is the Z1s worth getting without being able to root?

I'm in the market for a new phone and the only thing keeping me on the fence with the Z1s is the lack of root and despite the bounty on it, progress looks to be slowing. Can anyone make an argument for this phone on stock over an equivalently spec'd phone that can be rooted?

Do you care about it being waterproof? Do you care about a horrible screen? (Yes, the screen is terrible). Sony's software is good enough to use without any rooting, but what other phones were you looking at?
Well, I'm moving up from a Galaxy Nexus who's screen has horrible burnin so I guess calling the Z1s screen terrible is a relative statement. I'm mainly looking to buy through tmobile. Their phone offering is kind of weak, atleast until they stock the S5 but I'm sort of weary of AMOLED screens after the galaxy nexus. The only other phone I was seriously considering was the 2013 HTC One which i know has root but obviously its a bit dated by comparison. Could you recommend any other competitor? Maybe even through AT&T?
Come on buddy. Let's positive thinking here. It's not able yet, beside think about quad core, 2 GB ram, 16 GB internal memory, plus 20 mp camera. You'll be proud of it.

To each his own, but personally i wouldn't ever be interested in a phone where i can't unlock the bootloader. So a phone without root and without bootloader unlocking? No way for me. I love my Z1 though, but have the unlocked international version

If you really don't care about the screen, it's a good phone. I forgot to mention that the tmobile version of this phone is HUGE. It's bigger than the Z1. What about the Nexus 5? The HTC one 2013 is still a really great phone. They ported Sense 6 to it now with everything working.
The camera on this phone is about equal to the HTC one's camera. More MP though.

The phone has a huge list of Pros and while no root is the only con I can give it, it's a pretty big one. I have a broken galaxy nexus and disposable income burning a hol through my pocket. I'm going to have a new phone by the end of the day. I'm just trying to weigh which hurts less either a bit of an outdated phone with root or the Z1s without root.

Root will eventually come in August when jcase said he would release it. Another question is do you care about slow updates? The Z1 just got KK, but the tmobile version will likely have to wait a few more months. HTC seems to be doing well updating their phones. I would get the HTC One if I were you. Maybe even the new HTC one that's being release tomorrow.

The slow updates was a bit of a bummer but I could live with it. I asked whether Tmobile would offer the HTC one tomorrow but the rep sounded doubtful. I could simply go with the HTC One and then jump to the 2014 model after a few months when tmobile has them stocked. The other reason I'm considering the HTC one is for it's build quality. I'd be taking a bit of a hit on horsepower though but still an absolute upgrade from the galaxy nexus.
You may have convinced me to take the HTC one actually lol.

Yeah no one knows about that. There are some rumors that Verizon will have it for 2 weeks before everyone else, but some rumors say all carriers get it tomorrow. The 2013 one is still pretty fast though.
@aooga
The htc one camera is definitively one of the worst camera ever seen in the last years
Check gsmarena comparisons if you don't trust me
And this only would made me skip this phone
Anyway, I would skip the S5 due to its crappy ui
And the z1s for his closeness
Couldn't you buy an unlocked phone maybe? I know US mentality is quite different.. but cmon is there really this saving?

Hmm. I didn't see that when I had it. The camera was really good both in low light and outside. The Z1 camera takes a lot of fiddling to get shots, but when you get it right, they're pretty good.
Oooohhh, the camera..... yea that just bummed me out of the HTC One. Ugh. I guess it's back to square one. I gave the nexus 5 a thought and the only real reason I dismissed it was because my brother has it.

Just to be clear: you can root your device with locked bootloader. You just can't install custom roms. It's just a bit of work to get a rooted Kitkat.
I love the device. Sonys firmware is really good I didn't have any reason to use custom roms yet. It's closer to pure Android than the other 3 brands.
The camera is good (with a bit practice). I've bought the device mainly because of the huge battery

The problem is exactly there. When I open photos load they are good. Then I say: "oh, let's take a look at those people up there" or "let's check that bird on the seaside "
And I zoom in.. and you realize photos suck (a ****ty galaxy ace can even beat the one! holy jesus..)
anyway, I wouldn't boycott the ****ing close contract system if I were you... but if you aren't so prudish, well, z1s would be a good deal
Otherwise, go unlocked nexus 5/xperia z/xperia z1

If you live in the US, buying phones from the carrier is actual beneficial. Tmobile has something called JUMP that lets you get a phone every 6 months if you buy the phone from them. And you pay nothing up front.

Hey guys, do you think buying a used note 3 is still a good by at $350?

I got my note 3 back in January and I'm still very happy with it. This is the best battery life I've ever experienced on any device I've ever owned, But I also want to see what the future holds for the note line. If it's extremely nice I will get it. If not I will just keep my note 3 till I finally get tired of it.

I finally got the device. The seller claims that they too purchased it back in January. There isn't a mark on the device. It is definitely in mint condition.
It's on, rooted, debloated and disabled carrier iq, and customized! Easier than I expected to use one handed (but I have large hands) and fits in my pocket better than anticipated as well. Not as smooth as my Nexus 5 or even 4 (even turning most features off and using Nova), but worth the extra screen and battery size.
Definitely going for a Note 4 in a few months, but looking forward to using this bad boy for the time being! I'm not in any rush with this device in hand. The 3 is a great device. My only regret is not having moved to the Note line of phones earlier.

That's weird. I have a similar setup on my Note and it is the butteriest phone I've ever owned. I need to update my sig but I'm running stock rooted kitkat, I used Titanium Backup to debloat the crap out of it, and I got rid of Carrier IQ. There isn't a hint of lag.

I did the same thing, but just to my eye, it's not as smooth as a nexus 5. It's not a huge difference (it's barely a difference at all), and certainly not one that I would go back to a nexus for. It's just something I noticed with both devices in my hand at the same time.
If you enjoy rooting and flashing, I hope it's not the AT&T Note 3.

Should I buy one

I have pre ordered note 5 from best buy but I am feeling like I should cancel it. Reasons being
1. There are many things around the corner, USB type C, new nexus (hope it has brilliant display as note), new SOC's which much better performance (up to 50% improvement next year).
2. No improvement in SOC from S6 , not much improvement in camera from note 4 (same sensor), I don't have note 4 or S6 but I can get them for much cheaper price as note 5 is out now.
3. At&t boot loader will be locked.
Reasons I want to get this one
1. Best buy is giving $200 gift card on trade in so phone would cost $600 with a free wireless charger and I have to pay remaining amount on installments, so I am getting 28 weeks. (I am paying 30% up front so I can use gift card to do so)
2. Next overall good (big screen) phone would be note 6, I don't want to wait another year.
Anyone has any good advice?
If you haven't owned a Note device before then maybe you should look somewhere else. The S-Pen is what makes a Note a Note, yet you never really mentioned it being a selling point for you.
Short: No
If you have Verizon or AT&T avoid at all cost until root is obtained if you are into rooting. It's been almost a year and the note 4 for those carriers still haven't ever gotten permanent root..

Couldn't agree more. Don't buy any phone these days on locked down carriers assuming it will get full root.
No! Youde be better off buying a Note 4.
Pick up your device and use it for 13days. If you don't like it return it. Reviews will start coming out and some are already starting to prove the naysayers wrong. If you enjoy it keep it.

ATT = no root, and for sure no unlocked bootloader EVER. So no ROM's on an ATT Note 5.
I'd switch to T-Mobile, they are the only U.S. Carrier left that has unlocked bootloaders on their flagship devices
Coming from a Note 4 user, my view is No. For me, I would get the Note 4 or the Note 4 Edge over the 5.

The Note5 is a huge upgrade from an S4, night and day.
I think you should try it, what have you got to lose.
Anyway I went to Bestbuy and played around with the Note 5 and compared it to my Note 4. The thing that struck me the most is the improved ergonomics of the device. It is much easier to hold in the hand, due to a combination of the rear-facing curve and the reduced bezel making the device narrower. The home button is more pronounced, not flush mount like the Note 4. Also the glass is seemed flat at edges of the screen, not as beveled as Note 4. Which should make installing a tempered glass screen protector easier.

The note 5 camera does have the same basic sensor as the note 4 but the 5 takes better pictures. Especially in low light. It launches and focuses much faster, and has manual shutter speed options. Better video stabilization also.

I am an at&t customer and I'm thinking about buying a factory unlocked note 5 (N920I) won't the boot loader be unlocked on this phone? Also would I be able
to root the factory unlocked phone and flash custom roms? Thanks in advance.

Carrier lock and bootloader lock are two different things. I would say wait for few days and see which version gets root. I think you would be better off buying t mobile note 5, you will still get warranty, the bandwidth are mostly same, they will carrier unlock the phone when you buy at full price (which you have to as you are at&t customer not t mobile) and till now there galaxy phones had unlocked bootloader.

If you haven't owned a Note device before then maybe you should look somewhere else. The S-Pen is what makes a Note a Note, yet you never really mentioned it being a selling point for you.

I want to try s pen as I had nvidia shield and stylus (which was not so good still) I liked. So Stylus is selling point as well for me.

If you have Verizon or AT&T avoid at all cost until root is obtained if you are into rooting. It's been almost a year and the note 4 for those carriers still haven't ever gotten permanent root..

Yep that's the thing what makes me worrie, but I don't have money to pay front for t mobile note 5. I am getting a good deal from best buy, after all offers I am have to pay around 80 upfront and rest of the $28 months $18.5 per month.

Couldn't agree more. Don't buy any phone these days on locked down carriers assuming it will get full root.

The thing is I am putting value for unlocked bootloader, what I mean is if I am saving $100 on bootloader locked phone than unlocked one, I will go for locked one and if it saves less than 100 then I will get unlocked one, right now I am saving around $250 on locked one and getting monthly installments.

I don't want to switch, t mobile coverage is not so good in my area and everyone in my plan won't switch.

Coming from a Note 4 user, my view is No. For me, I would get the Note 4 or the Note 4 Edge over the 5.

Is anyone going to get the s8 active??

So the s8 active goes on sale this coming Friday. Anyone going with this. I know it's not as aesthetically pleasing but 4000mah battery and 600mhz band 71 support has me seriously thinking.

Just got it yesterday, it's awesome. Needs root but so far so good.
I agree. Just got mine as well. Sapped on a glass screen protector just to prevent scratches and installed substratium dark theme to black out all my apps. Happy

Just got mine last night from S7 Active. Everything is awesome but the position of FPS is hard to locate!
I'm super happy with mine aswell! Hopefully the install base can eclipse the regular s8 on T-Mobile and we get some great roms cause the signal where I work is amazing now.

also received mine few days ago and my friend got it sim-unlocked. What a great device!!!!
I purchased one for my wife who abuses phones (she previously broke 2 phones in a matter of 3 weeks) and so far so good. I would like to root it. I found this link in a different forum but I am not sure how reliable it is...

Has anyone rooted their phone?
I wonder how many people will get this phone and hopefully we will have some love from developers! ?
My cousin got it and I was able to check it out in person. I wouldn't mind switching my S8 for an Active. Seeing it and using it made me start thinking about it. Hope to hear about everyone's experiences with the phone!
I have one and love it
Got it first week of December. GREAT phone. Battery life is incredible (coming from S6 Edge) and screen is amazing. No root, and I always root my phones, but I haven't had many issues or circumstances where I miss root.
