How to stop the slider sticking? - Motorola Droid 4

So, I got fed up of not having a hardware keyboard on my iPhone, and bought a used Droid 4 off eBay. The slider mechanism isn't great, though: first, it's quite stiff; second, it needs even pressure on both sides to close, otherwise it'll get stuck and won't close, and needs to be pushed fully open before closing it again. I had a Milestone 2 a while back, and it didn't suffer this sort of issue.
I'm guessing the slider mechanism needs cleaning and maybe lubricating. Does anyone have any tips for how to do this and what to use? Or is it beyond hope?

I also bought a used Droid 4 recently - and had the same issue. I tried this: http://www.droidforums.net/threads/keyboard-slider-stick-fix.172750/

Thanks for the link, I'll try that. How well did it work for you?

Not as good as new, but it's slideable without force. Beside that i don't know how good would be new.

Thanks! I didn't have any WD-40 to hand, but I followed the same procedure - clean with acetone first, that seemed to get rid of quite a bit of dirt and make a bit of a difference, then I used some 3-in-one oil I had around, and that makes the mechanism quite smooth. Now it opens and closes either by pushing it with my thumbs on the screen, or I can snap it shut from the middle. It's not working quite as well as my old Milestone 2 was, but then I did look after that phone pretty well.

WD 40 doesnt have good oil effect for long period. It is good for istant help, like rusty nuts. The perfect solution is special oil for saw machines.

Tightening Your Kaiser Screen (?)

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know how or has anyone seen anything about doing this. Please point me in the right direction. I've been in the forum searching for a few days now.
What do you mean tightening?
Interesting you'd bring this up. My first Tilt's screen was solid, hardly any play at all. It became loose, and I returned it and got a refurb which was worse. I just returned that one (different issue) and it's solid. What he means (I think) is that the space between the two halves is more than it should be. I'm not sure of what causes this variance, but, it's annoying. Especially when you tap the screen because it gets all jostled around.
I'd imagine that you'd have to have a jeweler's screw driver or such, and get to some tiny screws somewhere.

I was assuming me means tightening the 'tilt' mechanism (brackets)??

Yeah, I saw the tutorial for making it tilt farther.

I have had this one for quite a while, would that matter.
Is there a way to tighten the tilting mechanism on the kaiser if or when it loosens up a bit?
I've done a quick google but found nothing.

mine is getting that way. it's not bad, yet. but it's getting that way
I think I might give it a shot at figuring it out. I saw a modification to make tilt straight so somewhere in there may be th ething to make a little more stiff.
I'd venture a guess and say that for those who's screens have become more and more loose over time, it would be a screw to tighten. (or a few) BTW, the new one I got today is tight as the abs of steel girl's butt...
I have a similar issue and I need soe guidance. My screen is "shifting". The two halves are not matching up evenly any longer. There is about a 1/16" overhang of the top half and the bottom half when the phone is closed.
Any help to loosen and then shift the top half so it is equal to the bottom would be appreciated.
I had this problem, too, and fixed it myself. Here's the thread where I talk about it. There's a little rubber bumper at the end of each slider track and mine were malformed, so I added some layers of plastic to make them thicker. Check out the pics in this thread to see where the bumpers are:

Has anyone ever broken the sliding/tilting mechanism?

Has anyone ever broken the sliding/tilting mechanism on the Tilt under relatively normal usage? How sturdy/fragile is it? I guess I'm just a bit OCD about it, and am afraid I'm going to watch the screen fly off or something one of these days when I slide it open.
There are reports of the mechanism breaking, of course, but it seems pretty sturdy to me.
I never open or close it very quickly, though, and make sure the screen is down flat before trying to close.
And to be honest, I don't use the keyboard as much as I thought I would -- just when I need to compose a lengthy note or play Guitar Hero
I had mine for about a month, and used the crap out of it. I would load movies and open it up and sit it on my desk, etc. Then one day, it just wouldn't stay tilted anymore. Took it back to AT&T, and they replaced it on the spot. They gave me the line about being careful, but I was always very gentle with it -
My phone has been through quite some hardships...and the tilt functionality has yet to be compromised as a result. The 8925 is very sturdily built.
I use my tilt function a lot... now it's getting a bit loose, but it still works tho

co-sign to that...the Tilt is a very [physically] solid phone IMO.

Has anyone replaced their trackball?

My trackball is broken or has dust in it. It doesn't move left unless I push it in while going left, and sometimes clicking it doesn't register.
Has anyone attempted opening the G1 to clean or replace the trackball? I was looking at the Dream pdf and it seems like quite a task.

Blow the dust out with compressed air, should fix it. Or just spint it vigorously for few minutes. I don't see track ball breaking that fast (it's not BB for crying out loud ). That happened to me few months ago and a little air fixed it.
Good luck
it isnt too bad to open up the phone and clean it, but dont unless absolutely necessary. Lots of connections that can be prone to damage, and some tape that needs to be carefully removed and reused or replaced.
I've tried moving it vigorously many times, which didn't work.
So I used my air compressor and blew air into it, and that didn't work.
Then I tried rubbing alcohol with a q-tip, and that hardly worked.
I have opened my phone, wow!
I have a bronze G1 and the keyboard is not viewable, found someone in hong kong selling them for 5 bucks so i bought the black keyboard pad and replace it. It was a pain and mind you, my background is totally different than most peoples. I have worked as a Electronics Tech for most of my life and have taken EVERYTHING apart as long as i can remember. That thing has some of the smallest connectors and tiniest screws i have ever seen.
Yes it can be done, the hardest part your going to have to deal with is the splitting of the internal case, they sent a small plastic tool with the keypad and without that i would have probably destroyed the phone in the process. If you can find a small plastic or wooden tool to do that part its not to bad and you do not have to go as far as i did.
If however you do not have a background in taking stuff apart and putting it back together again. AVOID doing so!!
Your phone will NOT SURVIVE most likely. First time took me several hours even with the G1 PDF which looks great till you have to rely on it. Only issue i had was i didnt get the camera connector plugged back in so everything using the camera force closed, that was my clue. So i had to open it up a second time, everything works now and love it but it was not the easiest thing i have ever worked on truth be told.

[Q] Some laptop assistance

Hello,
I know this is a forum for phones but it's the main forum I use so I thought I'd try here first but apologises if I'm wrong.
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D-22E running Ubuntu. It overheats quite regularly. I've set up a script to tell me when the CPU gets too hot (currently it goes off at 95C - auto shutdown is 100C). I know 95C is way too hot but I can't use my computer in a way I like without letting it get that hot (iPlayer being the main thing I want to do).
I've been researching it and it seems to be most likely that the fan is clogged up. Now I've cleaned desktop fan's before but I'm a bit puzzled of how to get into this laptop. I've attached two pictures, one of the back and one of the front. On the back, I unscrewed all the little screws and nothing happened. I was kinda hoping it'd all fall apart but no.
Would someone with a little more knowledge on the subject me able to direct me what to do? The manual is useless and I've searched around but there isn't a specific guide. I'm not totally inept but some clues would be nice
Thanks in advance, Rowan.
P.S. Just being on firefox and using amsn and its running at 71C!
Ok well there are too ways
1.
Disassemble the whole thing then find the CPU fan, take it out clean. Very difficult, and also possibly end in laptop death (I did that to an old vaio, they attached the processor the the heatsink assembly by glue, clever...)
2.
You can get some compressed air in a can, blow that in the fan output port and it should dislodge some dust. But cannot be sure so if you do it while it is on the dust will blow out of the output.
You can also try blowing it into the fan input on the bottom, in your picture i think its the circle on the top right.
That should help the problem, i have seen myself that a 3-5 yr old laptop do have a large dust build up and therefore it ends up becoming more difficult to dislodge. I would go for the air can first and see what happens, if you fix it then great, if not then the only route is the disassemble one i am afraid.
Cheers
Canned air is good, but if you can get your hands on one, air compressor. Much more pressure. I have this a lot since I work at a computer repair shop. Also you would have to make sure the fan isn't dead completely. Also don't try to take it apart yourself. Trust me, I dod this a lot and it's pretty hard to take it apart without ripping cables and then actually putting it back together. It's a huge PITA. Also you can just send it to me and I'll fix it
Thank you for the replies guys. I am finding it difficult to get into. How do I even know what should come apart? I've seen guides where you go under the keyboard but I just don't know. But you've now given me second thoughts. My university will fix computers for free (apparently) so I may ask them to look at it instead. I've done this with desktops before as I said but it's my first laptop so I'm a bit of a novice. Is canned air something that I could find easily? I'd rather try sort it myself and if I took it in I'd have to leave it there which isn't what I'd want to do! It's only a year old so I'm not overly impressed! Thanks, Rowan.
Canned air is on ebay. You should be able to pull up the rear cover where you would access the ram and CPU, the fan should be around there. And being a year old will make no different to a clogged fan - it depends a lot on where you have it running, as it does with a PC.
Also, don't let it die at 100c, that is very bad for the CPU and you will be shortening the life drastically.
I'll try canned air then before I take it in anywhere. Seems too hard to do it myself by going inside. And I try not to let it die at a 100C but if I'm not concentrating then it can happen. Thanks, Rowan.
Even for short term get one of the external fan base things.
I open my Vaio every 6 months to give it a clean out and would recommend all laptop owns do as the main culprit for overheating is a clogged air vent.
That is similar to what I first pulled out of mine, the rectangular shaped dirt is like a felt strip that sits across the main vent so canned air will only work if there isn't that much blocking the vent in the first place, but if it's like in the image the laptop will need to be opened to get rid of it.
What model number is your laptop?
That looks like a hell of a lot! I think that will be my problem. Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D-22E (unless you wanted anythign more specific?). Looks like I'll have to take it in somewhere then i can just keep it attended to with the compressed air that i've already bought now. If I took it in somewhere, any idea how much they'd charge for something like that?

More than likely, that's about as much as I pulled out after the first 2 years of use, which is why I open it up now every 6 months to give it a good clean and keep on top it.

Shouldn't be too much just to clean it out. You could have a look HERE, I've just had a look but there isn't a complete guide for your model, but it's worth having a browse.
Well i got extra fans (on a stand off ebay)..£3 and it never overheats! I too have a Toshiba (P300 16T)

Looks like something I should also invest in then!
I'll have a look around, and a think, and I'll get it sorted out soon.
Thanks for the replies!
Just an update. I was watching iplayer (QI for anyone concerned) and the temp was pushing 95C. My flatmate blew into fan and it dropped to 60-70 odd. Iplayer stopped and it dropped below 50C. Seems its sorted for now. I'll give it a go with the compressed air too. Cheers.

Don't allow fan to spin while using air. It will wreak havoc on the fan bearings.
good day.

[Q] losing letters: normal wear or physical damage?

Due to heat and wear, the glue that keeps the letters attached to the keyboard of my Milestone is coming loose, in other words I am losing letters.
I want to send it back under warranty, but the Motorola site asks me if it is normal wear or physical damage. I'd say it's physical damage due to normal wear...
Has anybody else had this problem? What's your experience with the waranty?
Heat?????????? Glue???
I have never seen the internals of the milestone but I'm sure the glue (there's glue holding the keys on?????) I'm sure the milestone can't get that hot. Did you overclock?
(Btw u migbt as well say to moto it was due to wear because the processor gets pretty hot normally
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
No, I did not overclock and yes the milestone gets pretty hot from time to time. I do a lot of tethering and that appears to cause a lot of heat.
And yes it's glue that is holding the keys.
hey post a picture!
A former flatmate of mine also has this problem - though he never did anything besides normal use (he didn't even update to 2.2)
But he has a different 'type' of keyboard than me...
His is kinda 'bubbly' and mine is rather flat and more matte than his...
i had a milestone with the bubbly keyboard too, and i got this problem after about 6 months of use.
I looked into replacing the keyboard myself, which can be done for abut 10 bucks, but in the end i just swapped my phone for my dads old one which had the flat keyboard style, which definitely seems more durable
I had the bubbly keyboard.. after a year of use the top buttons started to bubble more and come off. I bought a flat version online.. just the sticker that goes on top of the real keyboard. It was exciting, love taking my phone apart.

which one is easier to type on? I got the bubble version and I swear all the time and then I read that the flat version is even worse.
What's your opinion?

I personally think the bubble one is better for typing (I have both, one on my droid, one on my milestone).
Then again, the flat one isn't too bad, I can use both pretty equally.
when i first used the flat one i was more inaccurate, but once i got used to it i found i could type faster on it, and that the keys were actually easier to press
