Verizon Moto X 2013 Not Turning On - Moto X Q&A

Hi guys, so basically a while back my Moto X (2013, 1st generation) decided to just stop working so I updated to the 2014 version, however I would really like to get my photos back off of the internal memory of my old Moto X, however it won't turn on at all.
I am not sure if it is an issue with the battery or what, but basically what it does is when you try to turn it on, nothing happens at all, and if you plug it into a charger then the green LED light at the top of the phone turns on (I have read that means that the battery is so dead it can't turn the display on) however, after a few seconds or so of being plugged into a charger, the green light turns off and I have to unplug the charger and plug it back in for the light to come back on.
Is there anyone that knows what exactly is happening and how I could fix this?
I looked up how to change the battery in it, but am not sure if that is what is wrong with the phone or what. And was wondering if I do end up changing the battery and that works, would I still have the photos that are on the phone, or would they be gone?
The phone is simply just a stock 2013 Verizon Moto X, not rooted or anything and it was running KitKat 4.4.4.

try leaving it plugged into the wall over night. then, plug into your computer and see if you can get a connection. also try holding all three buttons for 5 seconds, then let go of the power button (force reboot to recovery).

Just tried both holding down the buttons and plugging it into my computer, both did nothing to the device. I guess I'll try plugging it in over night tonight to see if that does anything. Thanks for the reply.

Use a wall charger that can provide enough output voltage at least 1.5 - 2.0V, Samsung has plenty chargers with this level. Leave it plugged in for 2 to 4 hours, that can do the trick

agreed - using the OEM charger (cable and usb adapter) is the best way to go. 3rd parties adapters do not generate enough power.

Alright, sorry it took so long to respond to this, I had to go on a trip for the past week and didn't have a chance to reply.
I tried charging it over night using the stock charger that came with it and the green LED light at the top of the phone came on, and it was on for like 40 seconds or so, then the light turned off, and there was no other signs of it charging or not. There is no damage to the charger at all so I am guessing it is something wrong with the phone? Anyone know what is causing this or how I could fix it?

Green light usually means dead battery. See if Motorola will replace.

My D3 died! :(

:crying:
Opened bike race when the screen froze while opening the game (dark screen).
Pulled the battery but when I boot the screen goes on after 3 secs, stays on for 2 secs then goes into dim mode (i can see it's still on).
However my phone doesn't boot since I don't get any whatsapp messages. Normally it should boot to SIM screen but other apps should run.
X+power or M+power doesn't change much.
I'm guessing mobo/cpu fail.... any ideas?
:crying:
edit: It turns on when I put in the charger without battery! Dead battery?
If you put the battery flat on a table does in spin well. Batteries bulge when they are done. The better the spin the worse it is. It's odd the behaviour that can happen with a end of life battery

Well now I'm not so sure what it is.
When I put the cable in without battery the M logo appeared and then the charge screen with a ? in the battery (because there was none)
Then I put the battery in and it started charging.
After a while I tried to turn it on but same problem - just a black screen when power it, no logo whatsoever.
Now I can't get it to work without battery either...
edit: I don't think it can be the battery, because the screen stays on (it has power apparently) and it doens't work with cable connected either
But I also don't see it being the screen as it never vibrates like it does when you boot it.
How did it just show the charge screen before and now it doesn't??
I made a vid of what happens when I power it:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/22072961/Droid 3/Video0067.mp4
The Droid 3 and Bionic are similar phones, and it turns out that the Bionic will not boot up without a battery - it will hang at the Moto logo even if plugged in. See this thread at androidforums.com: http://androidforums.com/motorola-d...via-adb-unable-boot-up-phone.html#post5463741
So, it may be that you just need a good battery pack in order to get to Recovery/Bootloader/Fastboot etc. if the phone will not start or start to Safestrap.

Ye, except my phone doesn't even show the motorola logo, and I can't even get to the bootloader menu
edit: and it doesn't explain why I was able to get to the charge screen without battery at first, but not now
Right now I'm having the same problem, I could enter safetrap for now (after 10 attempts)

The worst part is using my Samsung Jet "Smarter than a smartphone". Which isn't even close to a smartphone because it doesn't have any of the OSes = no apps
In my XT860 in its power when it reaches the lockscreen, restarts or shuts.
When I put it to charge my battery shows 0% and charging. When I go to Safestrap-after several attempts-, battery shows 99% or sometimes 80%.
I think the cpu wants to leave the world of technology :crying:
edit: yeah, now i get infinite bootloops in the M DualCore LOL

I tried the stock cable that came with my phone (USB) but nothing happens. Screen doesn't even go on.
The light next to the microUSB does go on.
But my phone has never booted with USB (0.5A). When my battery was 0% I always needed a socket charger because it wouldn't go on and charge with USB
When I then insert battery and try again with stock cable same happens as in the video

Ah I see. Well I'm not in the US so getting one would be a PITA
I'm gonna try my spare battery (original battery) tomorrow. It that doesn't work it must be hardware related because I haven't flashed or done anything to it so it's not softbricked or something.
edit: it team blackhat do send to europe? How would this be different from trying another (working) battery?
Try cutting a USB cable open, hook the red wire to the + of the battery and - to the black and let it charge that way. Also, do you have any MicroUSB charger? I have one for a BB Bold I used to have that delivers I think 1.25A and it could charge my phone from dead (obviously not now with the flex cable having a rip in it).

The little light next to the USB port is the 'It's still alive" light that Moto put in when the battery is completely dead. It's to let you know that the phone *is* charging, just not high enough to boot the phone (i.e. when you let the battery completely die).
WHY they did not make it a standard charging light (like the D1 and D2) I don't know, but that's the only time it comes on. A quick flicker on USB plugin, or when the battery is dead. The light goes out when it gets enough power to boot up.

Well, it's not charging because there's no battery , the light it still on
I really dont see how its the battery because when I put it in without cable the screen turns on and stays on for as long as I keep the battery in. So it HAS power. Today I'm getting my spare battery and we'll see I guess..... don't have my hopes up

Thanks. But should it turn on when the LCD is bad? It doesn't even boot else It would vibrate once.
Can anyone confirm that the phone should boot when I remove the LCD alltogether? Else it might be a bad LCD or loose connector

Nook HD+ - Not charging Not Powering On

Hi,
I seem to have a peculiar problem with my brother's Nook HD+. When I plug it into the wall charger, the device shows a green light, which turns orange and the Nook powers on to show the Nook logo, but all of a sudden it switches off and the light disappears too.
I have tried holding down the power button while the device is plugged in, holding the n and power button down, using another charger, but nothing seems to work.
How can I troubleshoot this?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Sibot
Let it in charge for 1 hour. (orange light) then remove it. Wait like 10 minutes and try to turn it on. Press the power button for 10 seconds. Repeatedly
I'd suggest leave it plugged in and charged with the BN wall-charger for 4-6 hours.

The device is not charging, the orange light does not glow.
Here is what happens after plugging it into the charger - the light turns green for 2 seconds, then orange, the screen comes alive with the nook logo and then all of a sudden, the screen wipes out blank and the charging light also switches off.
I've tried to put it on charge the whole night, tried to turn on the device, hard reset - nothing worked.
Had a very similar issue with mine when I first got it. Turned out it was my USB cable, I called Barnes and Noble and they sent me a free replacement.

I've tried using two different USB cables. The other one is from my other Nook HD+, both the cables seem to be working fine on the other Nook.
I have the exact same issue with my nook right now. It has cm 10.1 installed. But my screen isn't even flashing on at all. It just charges green for 2 seconds, charges orange for 2 seconds, then goes black. Won't turn on. I've had it charges for like 2 days with no luck. Have you figured out what was wrong with your nook yet? I'm going to get a new cord this weekend I guess. Can't think of anything else to try.

Thanks! Went to a B&N today and got a new cord. Plugged my nook into the charger at their display booth and it showed the charging screen and the LED stayed orange. I was stoked, so I assumed the cord was broken and I bought a new one. Tried it at home, and same #%^#ing problem: green for 2 seconds, orange for 2 seconds, and then off. No screen boot up or battery charging display. Last resort, plugged it into my computer, and it is keeping the orange LED on (yay), but still hasn't booted. It's been a couple of hours, so hopefully it boots here soon. I'm gonna keep it charging with my computer overnight and see if that fixes the problem. Then (if it ever boots), I'm going to put a new OS on the thing so hopefully I don't have to fuss around with the issue anymore. Thanks Ifearnogod. I also fearnogod.

Had the same problem with the Grandson's, pressed and held numerous button combinations no luck so sent it back to argos for a complete swap out replacement. Guess what after a couple of days the replacement unit did the same thing. Now i'm tearing my hair out after looking through various forums with no answer i tried the daughters Galaxy note charger and bingo it worked, it appears that the original charger supplied with the nook HD plus is not powerful enough to do the job from a completely discharged state. I've told him not to allow it to go completely discharged and we haven't had a problem since with the nook supplied charger.
I have the same prob
I have the same problem, but with my Nook HD (not HD+). I used a different adapter at one point because I lost my Nook adapter. This may have caused the problem for me.
I've got a Nook HD that's acting like this, if I plug it into my computer or into the original charger it blinks green orange green orange, but never powers on. I've held the power button until it starts flashing orange only but it never charges it. When it's connected to the PC it keeps popping up a usb device failed to install prompt so I am thinking that this means the cable is working. I bought a replacement battery to put in it. Hoping that fixes the issue.
I did try it with another usb charger and it changed it's behavior slightly. It would flash green orange then show the N logo then shut off. If I left it on this usb charging adapter it still never would charge it up.
That is why I'm suspecting that it's a bad battery.
I'll get another charging cable next if that doesn't work.

I would go with testing a new cable / wall plug before anything else - but then for the price I would probably just jump on it then chuck it before spending money on a proprietary cable for an aging device.

Aging device? I would try to get a new cable/charger under warranty. Stores will do that if you can show the old one defective.

Its aging to me. Its been out for a long time now. I would go with something newer [then spend money on it] - but that's subjective - so I'm not getting into any debate here.
So they do that with just the cable - that's cool stuff.
lol.
yeah the battery didn't fix the issue. It's still not charging, if I connect the charging cable and adapter while it is turned off it turns it on, flashes green orange a couple of times then goes solid green. It boots up but I'm running on the remaining charge in the replacement battery I put in. visual inspection of the charging jack on the nook HD doesn't show any issues, visual inspection of the cable also doesn't show any issues. I'm going to take it to the closest barnes and noble and hope that they are willing to give me a new charging cable today. I guess we will see. Hopefully a new charging cord will fix the issue.

Make sure you still have stock on it if taking the device to the store. Alternate ROMs void the warranty. Maybe you can just take your charger and cable along with your serial number if the device is not stock. They can test to see if it charges their devices.

my nook HD have booted on. when i plug it in a DELL's laptop. the light was green -> orange -> and still orange, after few minutes it boot on and install 148update :good::laugh::good::laugh::good:
The battery not charging and tablet appearing dead other than the led is a common problem with tablets, not just the nook.
In the tablet they use a chip that has a controller integrated to charge lithium ion batteries. The controller has limits that have to fall into a preset range or the controller will not allow charging. If the battery voltage is low enough , the controller will experience a spike in current when the power is connected, that will trigger an excessive current limit in the controller which blocks it from charging the battery. The cycle repeats over and over and it will not charge because it is never on long enough to get the battery voltage higher.
The fix is easy on most tablets including the nook. You have to open up the case , will void warranty, unplug the internal battery and then connect that battery to an external charger for about 20 minutes to get the battery voltage up high enough to stop the over limit from occurring. I have about 6 tablets of various models that wouldn't turn on or charge and all were fixed and working great by doing the above. Actually a way to get tablets cheap if you see some with the same symptoms.
On the nook the wires you need to connect to charge on the battery are any red for + and any black for - . There are I think 3 red and 3 black bunched together on the connector, any one will work. After charging re-attach the battery and it should boot right up. Just be careful about letting the nook get below about 10% charge.
The charger you use can be just about any standard charger that can charge 7 volt lithium cells, the nook has them wired in series , 2 batteries x 3.7 ~ 7.4V.
A good cheap one that takes out having to worry about charger settings is :
TLP-2000-Tenergy-Universal-Charger-3-7V-14-8V
Here's my story:
Rooted, running CM11 no problems. Read some comics, decided to download and try out Dragon Age from the play store. I had ~35% battery remaining (hard to tell exactly, circular battery mod). After the game downloaded from the store, I opened the app and it began to download the larger files the game requires. I sat the Nook down while it was downloading and eventually the screen turned off/timed out. I tapped the power button to see where the download was and it would not turn on.
So, as of now, pushing the buttons in any combination for any amount of time does nothing. Plugging the tablet into the wall gives me a green light only (never orange). Holding the power button (and any button in combo) for ~10 seconds kills the green light. Pressing the button again lights the green light. I've left the tablet on the charger for over eight hours, two different times now, no change.
Plugging the tablet into the PC acts the same as above, however the PC also repeatedly gives USB device connect/disconnect warnings (sounds) for a bit.
WTF, any advice?

[FIX] Revive phone from the drain of death

this is a problem on Xperia Devices (at least the ones with a sealed battery my x10 never had this).
This drain brick happens because the hell i know, but is phone bricked, dark, no light , no vibration, nada, its was a real brick.
how i fixed it? sort of i fixed my Xperia T had to provoke charging but the Z1 doesnt have a red blinking light after charging it for a while... but it does have a magnetic charging port!.
now to the instructions. following what i did to try and revive my phone.
1. try to charge the phone for an hour or so.
2. most like it wont charge but if you connect it to the PC, it will sort of react to it, just try unplugging and plugging the phone till it reacts, you may even leave it to charge there just in case (for about 10 mins if you want i leaved it for 3).
3. get a 2 AMP charger, the original one or a known brand charger like anker (i did it with my anker charger and it worked).
4. get or Use a magnetic cable/dock and connect it simultaniously with the usb cable on the PC. (and no the magnetic cable wasnt enough to jump charge the phone).
5. if the stimulation worked, it should be able to show a really dim red led, that means your phone is still alive
6.let it charge it will turn on alone.
7. smile and cry out of joy because your 500-700 dollar phone still works.
if it worked or you have any modifications on this method leave a comment and hit the THANKS button.
btw i turned on my phone and it had 1% that means it never charged until i jump charged it.
Interesting. For normal charging, will plugging the Z1 to the USB and magnetic ports simultaneously speed up charging as well?

no you can't speed up charging. Charging speed is limited to cable quality, AC plug quality and software/hardware restrictions.
the USB on PC and magnetic cable combo for some reason helps to start the phone like you do when you want to recharge an depleted car battery.
It just open the circuit and let the phone charge again.
someone please confirm if this works for more than one person/situation.
Thanks for assistance btw, hopefully it works for all of us.
Nope doesn't work.

as i told you on the PM write up how you bricked it exactly and what steps have you done so i can help you correctly.
i will post pictures of the procedure of how i did it when i get a few hours to edit and upload it.
Tried this trick last night. After 2 hours LED stopped blinking and became stable RED (no flashing). This is the first time in 1 month that LED stopped flashing, I was even able to Hold Power+Volume up button and it vibrated 3 times (nothing like that happened in the past). So it was a significant improvement from where I was 2 days ago. However, LED suddenly turned off and when I connected it to charger again it started to blink again. Buttons do not respond again.
Little info from the past:
I bricked my Z1 when I flashed .290 ROM. Left it on charge for 2 days nothing happened, flashtool would not recognize it and kept saying USB debugging off. Then I decided to open back cover and remove the battery so it could reset. That didnt resolve the issue and i just gave up.
Video instruksion would be very helpfull maybe

Yes. But the computer simply recognised it as a normal "unknown" usb device with usb debugging disabled.

Exact same thing happened to me. "USB debugging off"
All I did was plug in the magnetic connector, then with the PC turned on and Pc companion running I plugged in the USB, it took about 20 minutes to recognise it but once it did, I unplugged it, left it on charge via the magnetic plug for around 5 hours and although the charging symbol never appeared it booted into recovery the normal way (I did that just to see what would happen) then restarted the phone via Cwm and it worked normally from then on.

BY saying "Charging Symbol never appeared", do you mean LED was not red and turned off?

The symbol that appears on the screen.
I also kind of used this method.
I directly plugged in, in these steps.
1) Plug in magnetic charging dock with 1A charger (Plugged USB into charger)
2) Plug in USB with 2.1A charger (Plugged USB into charger)
Dim-ish red light popped up and the phone began booting.
Plugging into the phone for me wasn't as effective as plugging into the charger as I left it for a while and nothing happened but upon plugging USB into my single dual port charger this method worked to get my phone onto the charging screen, Android L
Had to plug the USB in and out a few times, not too many times, but eventually it booted up to the charging screen.
Be patient is the key I suppose?
For me worked with magnetic and usb 1A charger! Thanks!

Turn Atrix HD withouth LCD Working

Hi, i have an Atrix HD and its LCD got broken when it fell from 3 ft high.
The Glass is ok and the phone kept working for a while with a black triangle on top, the touchscreen kept working with no problems.
After a second fall from the bed the LCD went completely black, but the phone kept working (using a HDMI cable to check messages and touchscreen vibrating feedback kept working so i could answer calls).
I let the phone battery die and now it wont turn back on, the charging light turns on, when i plug it on a USB port on Windows i get a connected beep followed by a disconnection beep, as if the phone were detecting the LCD not working and turning itself off.
Is there a way to bypass that? i need to connect the phone to get the files from the internal storage.
I ordered a new LCD but will take a long time to arrive (normally 2-3 months, sometimes longer since a live in Brazil).

Yes, also tried turning it on with the charger on and hdmi on as well.
Ok, i tried using mythtools but it acts as if the phone is not connected, same as above, windows reacts as if i was connecting and disconnecting a flash drive so the phone has some response.
anybody has any idea on what i could do?
Ok, the screen arrived, i installed it, but seems to have the same problem
Can someone please help me out here, when i connect it to the charger, the green light comes on, and then off, is my phone dead?

Always use what the phone brings on box as accessories. This case will be Moto original charger
Also by now you should be able to turn your device on. Just remove charger and re-plug again and try to turn your phone on

AHD and RHD batteries will work with the AHD. Remember, we do have the EB40 battery (RHD battery) mod that works with our device, and ours shipped with the EB20 (AHD battery).

Wow, i forgot the phone was there charging, after a week the alarm sounded, now it's turning on again, BUT the LCD is not, i tried disconnecting and connecting the lcd cable but did not solve it.
Another thing, after more than a week charging, only 17% charge, weird.
Maybe the LCD is not working? or the problem may be on the board.
I have this same issue. Except for the broken screen. My phone just stopped coming on. I did all the key combinations. Even opened it and removed the battery. Tested the voltage in the battery itself and it was fully charged. I tech on the Moto site told me it sounds to him like a LCD issue. I replaced the LCD and still nothing.
I plug my phone to the wall and get a green light for about 7 seconds or so. Then its off. A short time later,(couple min) it comes on again for a few seconds then off again. I plugged it to my PC and get the green light for the same seconds. The PC makes the chime that it would normally do when something is plugged into the USB. No changes done on the PC though. Doesn't try loading drivers or anything. After a few seconds, it chimes again and the green light goes out. Repeats about every 2 min.
Anyone found the issue?

Moto X only green light comes on

I started letting my wife use my OG Moto X. She said it prompted her for an update (Verizon BTW) and it updated. The next day she said it rebooted several times and then would not come on. I took a look at it, got it to power on and it locked up and powered off. I got it to try to come up a few times, with various results. I got it to go into the bootloader and tried doing a factory reset, it just tried to reboot back into the phone. It finally would not respond at all. All I get now is when I attach it to the charger, the green notification light will come on for about a min and then go off. I have a charge cable that is "lit" so you can see when it is providing power. It goes off when the green light goes off, indicating that it is not charging. I have used several different cables and chargers as well. I am not sure what if anything can be done. TIA.
What green notification light?
Its the one in the earpiece. Its not normally used on the US phone. I am not sure why I am seeing it now.

The phone's battery is completely dead. When you plug it in to charge it, the green light indicates that the phone is charging but you wont be able to boot up the phone. After a while when its gone there is enough juice in it to power it on. It does not mean that its not charging. Keep the phone plugged in for 15 mins then boot it up. It should work fine.

Been there, done that. It still does not boot. I am thinking maybe the battery is kaput and not taking a charge. If I try to turn it on, the green light will come on for a few seconds and go off. Nothing on screen. Same if I try to go into bootloader by holding power and volume down.
Try the OEM charger and leave it for a few hours.

Let it sit on the OEM charger overnight. Still Dead. The green light came on and stayed on longer than it had before. Now when I plug it in, nothing, no light at all. I have removed the sim card to put in another phone, but that shouldn't matter. I am at a loss now.

you can try connecting it to a computer on a USB2.0 port and leave it there for around 30 minutes. If it doesn't boot, it could be a battery issue.
I have the same issue. I have tried a new battery and still am having the same issue. Anyone have any ideas as of what to do besides buy a new phone?
