You need to unroot, remove xposed, undo all changes you made while you had root, and flash stock recovery. After that you can take an OTA. If you modified the system image a lot, your best bet would be to flash the stock system image as well.

Can you explain me step-by-step how to do it?

For some reason I can't find a sure answer or How-To on rooting 4.4.2 for my GSM DE on T-Mobile. Someone point me in the right direction. This 4.4.2 update popup is getting really annoying.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If so I am sure it will only be a matter of time before someone updates the TWRP custom recovery for a Moto X on 4.4.2.
The only way to root 4.4.2 is off your phone's bootloader is unlocked or can be unlocked.
There is no root for locked bootloader
Here is the process for unlocked bootloader
Unlock your bootloader
Install custom recovery
Flash SuperSU flashable zip
And your done

But can you use the version of TWRP that is for 4.4? Or has it been updated for 4.4.2? Don't the custom recoveries need to be updated for the new versions of the OS?
The same version of twrp works for 4.4 and 4.4.2.
So essentially the same steps that I performed for Rooting 4.4 applies to 4.4.2 ? I thought something would have changed, but I'll take your word for it.
And is it safe to assume my bootloader should stay unlocked since I already went through the root process with 4.4?

Yes and Yes. I also have a GSM Dev Edition with an Unlocked Bootloader and the same root method worked and the bootloader remained unlocked.

It is always the same if your bootloader is unlocked in that you flash custom recovery and install a superuser. The only thing that would change is if the custom recovery changes for the new version of the OS or if the super user is updated.
I just outlined it all here:

Going through the root process has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader. Once unlocked, your bootloader will stay unlocked until you relock it.
Sounds good. I'll just reflash back to stock and update then root.

Well I just got done flashing with the Moto X Restore Utility, updated to 4.4.2, flashed TWRP, and rooted.
Aw well. I was going to contribute that if you were annoyed by the 4.4.2 OTA constantly in your face: you can disable the MotorolaOTA system service.
I'm running 4.4.2 unlocked bootloader . I was able to root using TWRP
I love the stock system so i dont care for a custom rom atm, i only wanna keep root.
If i do the ota 4.4.4 update will i keep root? Or if i lose it, can i just install via TWRP again?

You have to return to the stock recovery to take the OTA. If you are not totally stock system, you have to return the system to stock. Totally stock means no Xposed framework, no tethering mods, no changes to the system at all.

Yes of course - TWRP and SuperSU or whatever other Superuser you use.

Its in one of the stickies either here or on general how to return to stock to take an OTA.
Basically, you get the 4.4.2 sbf for Verizon Moto X. Then you unzip it and use mfastboot to flash recovery.img. But the site with the sbf's has been down alot lately. You may be able to use regular fastboot to flash recovery. I think you only need mfastboot to flash the system.img.
Be sure and make a nandroid before you flash the stock recovery!
Can just use the 4.4.4 fxz in general. Less steps, forgets about OTA...
Then just flash recovery and root. Back to gold
tapa'd on my moto x

While the 4.4.4 sbf is available for Verizon, it is not available for ATT or TMobile. For sprint, there is an unofficial one.

I see that now that you mentioned it. The new layout is truncating the thread titles on me. I really don't like the new layout for reasons like that, but I suppose someone must like it or they wouldn't have changed it.
Sorry if it is already available, I tried searching in vain.
Is there any thread which gives me stock pre rooted ROM for Moto X 2014 - 5.0 and 5.1 updates.
If it is not available, can anyone who can do it create flashable zips?
It will be really convenient for all of us.
:fingers-crossed:
Why would you want a flashable, rooted system zip when you can flash the SuperSu zip file to root your phone yourself? It's the same amount of work and even easier.
Because, if in case Moto X get some future updates, I need to return to stock and then get the OTP. If someone can maintain the Rooted stock so that we can flash over it'll save the in between work right? (If I am not wrong in the first place)

It's the same ammount of work because you can't take updates on a rooted system. You have to flash a stock image without root to update. So what you are asking for is useless.

Ok. Thanks for the info:good:
Hey all,
I've been receiving notifications for the OTA for a few days now, and I certainly would like to update my Moto X. That being said, OTA fails since I have a rooted device, go figure.
Anyways, my plan of action is to back uo everything, unroot using SuperSU, apply the update (still on stock recovery), and then re-root on the other side.
Has anyone gone about this route yet? Does this all sound like it should work? Also, it's been a while since I've modded my X, so any new rooting methods for 5.1 that people have tried and succeeded with?
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
Not only do you need to unroot, you have to undo any modifications you made with root. As long as you can do that the update will work.
If you can't get it back to unmodified, you will have to flash a stock system image.
As far as root, the process is the same for 4.4.4, 5.0, and 5.1. Just boot into twrp and let it root it for you, or flash supersu zip. Very easy.

I originally rooted 5.0. To get the OTA I had to unroot and reflash the stock recovery. After that the OTA applied fine.
The main reason I rooted was for Greenify. I'm now unrooted on 5.1 and my battery sucks. I want to think that Greenify actually works so I would like to root 5.1. As mentioned I have rooted before but am still very much a novice. You state "Just boot into twrp and let it root it for you". I think I have saw in the forums that if I boot into twrp it will actually leave the stock recovery? I really don't want to do anything except root so that I can install Greenify again. I want to make as easy as possible to take the next OTA. If booting into twrp will allow this, is there a link to a simple process? There is so much information out there and most of it is dated so it scares me that it might not work on 5.1. Thanks.

Yes, if you just boot it, the stock recovery stays on the phone. No need to flash TWRP. Download version 2.8.5.0! The newer versions don't boot, the new ones can only be flashed. With 2.8.5.0 type:
fastboot boot twrpfilenamehere.img
Then you will be in twrp and can root.

Sorry about the late reply, thanks! I still have my stock recovery, and have been pretty lazy about installing busy box or xposed or any other fun things. I'll probably muster up the courage this week. After all, I've killed and resurrected this thing once before

Just got a new XT1095 Pure with 4.4.4 pre-loaded. I've already gone through the 'unlocking bootloader' routine from the Moto website. What's next? Should I be taking OTA to 5.1 first or rooting first? Thanks for any help!

OTA first, you can't upgrade if you are rooted.

The 4.4 bootloader is fine with every rom out there. I wouldn't take the OTA since you are unlocked bootloader just flash the stock roms via twrp on the android develop section there is one for 4.4, 5.0, and 5.1. its the best way to not risk hard bricks. I have switched back and forth several times going this route. AGISCI posted them.
I also just got an xt1095, is this the latest ROM http://www.filefactory.com/file/5d66szhobgmx/VICTARA_TMO_XT1095_5.1_LPE23.32-21.6_cid9_CFC.xml.zip ?
Also, I have unlocked my bootloader but didn't root yet (this is with 4.4.4 installed). If i simply DL this image and flash it using TWRP (which i have installed) will it overwrite TWRP or break it in any way? Can I then simply root via TWRP ( assuming it is ok) and boom have a fully rooted Lollipop phone ?

You can't flash firmware files with TWRP, it won't work.
You have to flash it with RSDLite or fastboot.
As far as if it overwrites TWRP. If you use RSDLite, yes it will erase TWRP and replace it with the stock recovery. If you use fastboot to flash just skip the recovery image when you are flashing.

Why? Is this limitation only for stock images or ANY custom ROM too?

Because the firmware files are just standard images which get flashed and overwrite the partitions. The zips you run in TWRP are instructions on what to do and install. They are completely different things/formats.
