What is the general consensus? Is it to early to jump to Marshmallow? Is it robust and functional? Do most apps still run? If I'm not happy can I easily revert to LP? Thanks for any advice.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I was more interested in whether the dev community has had it long enough to customize and enhance it as they typically do. I made the jump to L very early and for a while I was without many of the add-ons that came later. I look forward to M but I don't want the same situation as L. Thanks for your comments.

That is a completely different set of questions than you asked.
If custom ROMs are important to you, then you probably will want to wait a bit for Marshmallow ROMs to get close to the functionality of Lollipop. They are basically stock at this point. I think the feature port will start happening soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if it would be some time before it gets close to the functionality of Lollipop.
Xposed also doesn't work if that is important to you.
I would wait if I were you. The biggest thing I notice on M is the speed and battery increases. The downside is that there is many many things missing that we all have become accustom to. I mean you cant even get the LED working for notifications unless you use a 3rd party app or a hacked zip! lol You really aren't missing much....the hyperbole around the release is amazing.
I think Marshmallow sucks. Video and audio random freezing, can't root. Honestly I can't see the advantage to upgrading. At least nothing that overcomes these two huge shortcomings.

you want updates just to have updates? want us to release 'updates' that are nothing more than a version number change, without any REAL added benefits? just to appease your flashing addiction?
going through the dev section, i see:
Holiraider was updated 3 days ago
vjraider, a week ago
holissraider 2 days ago
not really sure what you expect? a new version/update EVERY day?
if you dont like the speed of development, then learn to do it yourself and step up

Damn Pirate, that is one beast of a rom that you are coming out with....I'm just sooooo excited for it lol
On a serious note OP: please don't ask for eta's. It's really frowned upon and if you don't like it, start creating your own roms.
Expect a donation from me today PG. I've been lazy this past week with work and such.
Ive tried out all the roms and i must say the tweaks put into them are pretty wicked. I have chosen to wait until a ICS build comes out. Went back to neutered CIQ stock.
I just want to get a brief idea of what kitchens people here are using if any.

Your video is not for mobile devices. What do you think we do with these things? Actually use them to call people? :rolls eyes:
Edit: After seeing your demo from my PC, I am super psyched to get that ROM. I didn't think these could be any better. This really is a new take on Sense 3.5. It all flows very well...shall we say like choreography?
You can't know your limits until you exceed them.

I haven't updated and have no plans to do judging by the sheer amount of complaints on here about 4.2, i don't recall ever reading so many people complaining about an update as bad as this before and it begs the question, what were Google thinking releasing an update that was so bad with so many bugs, etc and mores to the point can anything be done to fix it?

As another quite satisfied 4.2 user, I don't really appreciate your characterizing the update as awful.
Seems like a fine update to me - but I don't feel the need to open another thread to say that.

A couple of niggles that will be ironed out when app devs catch up with the new multi user setup but some good features already working.
I agree with the others here though, I hope your posting history isn't full of pointless moaning about things you haven't even tried.

Hummm Yet again.. I think 4.2 does have some bugs.. I also think its thrown the developers into a Nightmare because of the multi user configuration. Same with apps now having to make storage location choices.. With that said its NOT Terrible.
Obviously you never used the first Version of Honeycomb.. Then the Update Update update .. that still ended you with a slow sluggish interface that Well i Will not go on . Other then to say Google was to embarrassed about it they would NOT RELEASE THE SOURCE . That was bad..
Be thankful Google always pushes the Bleeding edge of there designs.. It brings us new features and keeps our Devices fresh. The update bugs is the price for this . Thank Google.. While Telling them they have Trouble. NO reason to tell us WE Already know...
Not sure what these threads are bringing to any forum. Off TOPIC IS THE Best place for such post.. YES MY Reply here to is Uncalled for.....

And there's another one, two word response and a fourteen line sig.
Only real issue I've noticed is lag when using multiple users. New keyboard is great, everything else seems fine to me. Happy user here after deleting the extra user account I tested.

I haven't bothered with the multi user aspect and it has been fine here. I think its a given that it ain't quite ready considering it was not implemented in the review units.
One thing I noticed is that you can now say "flu shot Monday at noon" and it will finally create a calendar event. I wonder how many more commands have been added.
omg was that monday as in tomorrow or last monday.. I Can not believe i missed the flu shots again.. grrrrrrrrr .. now im doomed
4.2 seems to be working fine on my nexus 7 so far. Even ice cream sandwich had a whole bunch of more serious issues on a number of devices yet overall most people think it was a great update.
I wouldn't say 4.2 is an awesome update as I've only found a couple of changes useful to me. But I just haven't experienced anything majorly wrong with it either. Give it a month or two and I'm sure the niggles will have been fixed as I have a suspicion they could be mostly ap related.
no its a good update, jeez everyone should quit complaining about now.
Worst update ever was the one my flyer got from Gingerbread 2.3.4 to Honeycomb 3.2....
I like it and am happy Google is stepping up. PA is a fantastic ROM and they did some amazing mods. Unfortunately I have a touch of the OCD and would spend hours trying to set it up just right. I was satisfied from the get go after 4.2 was installed and didn't feel the need to adjust any tablet or phablet settings. With the exception of the usual mods CM or AOKP style. Can't wait to see what's in store for this update Dev style!
I too am happy with 4.2- can't compare it to much but it's clearly no disaster.
I myself have not had any issues with 4.2, thus I'm rather pleased

4.2 update
I am new to the nexus family. I got the nexus 7 16gb yesterday and updated it to 4.2 as soon as possible. So far so good.
I've noticed some lag but overall I like the update, astro sees duplicate storage locations but I'm sure they'll fix that. I don't have multi user enabled and am stock, not rooted.

I think that would be great. What modifications do you plan to make?
Absolutely. Though would it work on the AT&T XT1058?
Since kernels cannot be flashed, I believe optimizations arent possible? Just visual changes?
I would like to see a debloated blur ROM with more toggle options in the notification pulldown and status bar tweaks.

De-bloat, replace some of the apps with more "functional" source built counterparts if/when they are available (MMS/Dialer/etc.), possibly some slight modifications to the framework images to make it look a bit more unified across all X variants.

As per AT&T, that would be dependent on having testers readily available who aren't afraid of taking a trip to RSDville should something go sideways.
Optimizations are always possible, however slight they may be

Pretty sure we would have to build from source to completely modify those areas, in the meantime I would just stick with GravityBox to take care of those options.

Sweet, I always appreciate any help I can get!
Keep in mind also guys that this will be done in my spare time (which I don't have a large amount of) and no ETAs will be given on anything. This is gonna require quite a bit of research and testing on my own device before I even start grabbing testers for it, I personally do NOT want to be responsible for bricking someone elses X... that would be a tragedy of epic proportions.

Remicks,
A) Yes I am interested!
B) Would you be willing to throw a little education our way? How does one make a Rom safestrap compatible? I am currently using a rooted 4.4 safestrap Rom, with OTA bootloader / safetrap installed. Here is the link http://rootzwiki.com/topic/108826-romsafestrapxt1060-stock-rooted-vzw-140455-kitkat/
I was under the impression that using safestrap one could not flash new Kernel, though it seems that is one of the steps for the above link? Is it because it is a digitally signed kernel? Any information would be awesome about how to do this, perhaps I could even help!
Why haven't any of the major teams (PA, AOKP, CM) put out a single build? I know they must be working on it, but I'm sure it doesn't take over a month even for an alpha.
When the N4 came out, ROMs popped up like roaches. What exactly is taking them so long?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
umm CM has nightlies. First one was 4 days ago.
Cm has gone official and if you can't wait then help them build.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Lol @ op's ignorance. They have been building alpha builds since the device was released. Alpha builds are just barebone stock aosp. Is that what u expect from CM, PA, AOKP, OMNI??? No you want those specific ROM features. Well those developers (whom most have real jobs, kids, families, etc) are busting their ass for free to incorporate their features into their Roms for us and will drop them asap.
Instead of making pointless whiny spoiled little brat threads like this, Learn how to code yourself and please do share... Oh what's that? You can't? Then shut up and wait.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
If you don't like to wait update the rom yourself. You obviously have no idea a to how big of a change KitKat was behind the scenes and what goes into making a ROM.

Wait impatient guy... If you want something thats FREE wait for it you are not entitled to ANYTHING, if you cant wait then why not code yourself dont be ungrateful be grateful they are even coding ROMS and btw CM nightlies are available....
I am terribly sorry but i seem to have caused some frustration for some if you. I must have chosen a poorly constructed sentence to ask my question. What I meant to ask was how big of a difference is there between jellybean and KitKat. I'm in no way a developer, and mean no offense to anyone.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
It's cool man, people just undertandably can react in that way because let's face it...people nowadays love to complain and whine. This is true about everything. People whine in comments about something not being updated or fixed quickly enough, and then 2 hours later whine in comments about another app being updated and fixed too frequently.
Because somehow, it's all about them. I'm not saying that was your intention. But I will say that since I spent a small amount of time looking in the app development threads I had a better understanding of what the scenario was that explained your question. After reading a couple of the threads, I'm not very surprised that most of them are delaying releases a little while.
Here's another way of looking at it, Kit-Kat brought a lot of new features and improvements...and it even has a very significantly smaller footprint on the device. It is entirely understandable that the people who make custom ROM's, most of them who do it just for the pleasure of it, might take a little longer than we might have experienced in the past.
Personally, I'm calling it now...give it a little bit of time, and I really think the roms that are released in the future are going to be fantastic. As far as I can tell, there is literally no drawback to the current Nexus phone as it pertains to why a person would want to spend development time on it instead of another device.
That's a good thing for all of us!
Time.

I came to Nexus from an HTC One. I know that fact that the main thing with the Nexus is to have a simple, fast, stable and latest vanilla Android, but Im getting bored All the ROM;s look pretty much the same and most of the launchers/themes I used were either poorly designed, slowing down the phone, or draining the battery.
With the HTC I was able to switch to vastly different ROMs (Vanilla, HTC Sense, MIUI, Ubuntu etc.) whenever I want to experience different ways of using Android but with the Nexus i feel its very stale.
I searched the forums and there are no other options. Any idea why? Or are there and i'm too dumb to find them?
Well porting something like sense or touchwiz would be way too much work due to chunks of them being closed source. We could probably have miui or ubuntu though, would just need someone to be interested in doing it.
Imo there is a certain group of people who want to flash other devices in order to get an aosp like experience. It's these people who the nexus line appeals to.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Kind of surprised there is no Ubuntu port (at least that I'm aware of). MIUI is too far behind. Last I checked it's still KK based, so we don't have a base to use, and besides, we are playing around with M, so almost two named releases ahead.

very easy solution. make your own rom if you are bored with the n6 rom options. no one is stopping you, nor hindering any if your creativity. if you dont want to, then you need to apologize to all if our developers that are here on the n6, for calling out their "worthless" roms. launchers/themes have nothing to do with it, as they are different developers. again, your option is to use your own creativity and make a creative rom, or be a good soul and appreciate what we already have.
It's funny because I saw this thread title and thought "no variety in threads". I come from a Samsung and HTC background and we never had these threads, but now I see this same thread being posted every week.
Just a case of "should have done your research before buying". Personally, I find a wider variety here than either from my HTC days or my short stint with LG.
