[Q] Unable to upgrade from 4.2.2 - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short, sent my phone away for warranty repair and it came back with 4.2.2 flashed on it. Never rooted it or modded it in any way. I wanted to update it back to 4.3 and from there eventually back to 5.1, however, the phone says that it's up to date - same thing with PC Companion. Tried to repair it via PCC and I also did a factory reset on it, both to no avail.
Is there any way to force the OTA update(unless I have to wait for X days) or is rooting and flashing the only way out of this? C6093, build 14.1.G.1.534, cust. no. 1276-1193.
Thanks in advance.

I am on mobile at the moment and hope
my search went correct. then you are on a branded swedish firmware from tele2.
Where are you from and what firmware was on your phone before you gave it to repair?
You can flash any firmware you want with the help of flash tool app.

Thanks for the flashtool tip, I unlocked the bootloader and used Sony's Emma flashtool to flash it back to 5.1.1.
Thanks again!

You didn't have to unlock your bootloader to flash a firmware to your phone!
Did you backup your ta partition because unlocking your bootloader means you will loose your DRM keys?

[Q] C6906 - Flashing .290 branded to .290 generic

Hello,
I recently bricked my Z1 and just got it back from warranty repaired. It is a C6906 that they upgraded to 4.3 (.290) however it is branded to BELL and I wish to flash the unbranded generic so I don't have as much bloatware/fast updates.
Since I do not wish to brick the device again and go through this again and so I am looking for advice to do this in a way that is guaranteed. With flashtool if I flash "C6906 14.2.A.0.290 Generic CA 1276-7484_R2B" would I have any issues at all? Just load up Flashtool - select the ftf and just use the default settings and plug in the Z1 while holding down the volume button.
I used the latest Flashtool v0.9.13, connected to PC, let install windows the drivers, selected the Unbranded Stock ftf, wiped all data, appslog, cache, all the rest unchecked and I performed the flash. All fine and the phone working well. I don't know why you had problems or why you bricked the phone but there is no advice to give you because it's simply. So even if all it's clear no guarantee and it's up to you. I don't think is the FTF faulty.

This is separate from how I bricked it (using custom rom), I did this previously with a older version and just not on .290 and I am wondering if there is any issues (IMEI etc) doing it .290 to .290, thats all. I just don't want to make a mistake.

Ok, so you bricked the phone with custon rom, now I understand. In this case there is no any issues flashing .290 unbranded on .290 branded. IMEI is lost only when jumping .257 and downgrade directly to .534. It's more "safe" flash .290 on .290. Go flash now.

Thanks. I don't suppose there is any working root for 4.3 yet, is there for the C9606?
Edit: Successfully flashed. Thanks again.

No direct root, like Vroot or 360, for .290 at the moment, just a method to get full root for Locked Bootladers. To do that you have to downgrade, root, install recovery then update to .290 again, a bit longer to get root on your phone, sure this method working for C6902/3 but should work for C6906 too, just check.
Would I be able to go from 290 branded to the new 136 intended without issue? I already bricked one device trying to root and I'm just trying to make sure lol

Probably because when you bricked your phone was the time when some issues was not discovered yet in do that, and this confirm the fact on the thread now is wrote "How not brick your phone" . BTW, the risk to brick the phone is in downgrading so if you want just to upgrade without Root this way should be more "safe" and you will be able to do it without any issue.

If you have an unlocked bootloader, you will not be able to update using PC Companion. I didnt know all this **** were involved in Sony phones.
I had unlocked my bootloader a couple of days back, didnt know I had to backup my DRM keys and ended up losing my warranty. Now I cant even update my phone using the official updating method.
BTW... the recovery is bundled with the kernel, thats why people refer to it as flashing a kernel instead of recovery. I didnt know this until 2 days back.
Thanks

If I am on a Locked Bootloader and on a rooted custom ROM, will Sony PC Companion detect my phone when the next update comes??
This is stupid. If you are in 4.3 (.290) with un-locked boot loader you cant update via PC companion or SUS.
I ended up going to 534 (4.2) via flashtool. Root it, restore TA backup and then use SUS to update. And flashing the latest 4.3 via Flashtool din work.
No PC Companion or SUS won't detect your phone.. You've to manually flash a valid ftf from Flashtool.. Then you can connect & update your phone through PC Companion or SUS..

[Q] why do I'm unable to upgrade to kit kat?

Hi,
I have a 4.3 installed on my phone, I woul upgrade to 4.4, but I don' know how to do that.
If I check with pc companion, ittell me that there is no upgrade, and the same by OTA.
I'm wondering if is it possible that I'm still out of upgrade.
How can I upgrade it...?
TIA

Is your Z1 a UK unbranded one? Uk unbranded seem to be always the last one to get updates. You could back up your phone then perform a repair. Doing repair may wipe your phone so consider before doing it. BTW you have posted in Q&A section. Please move to Q&A Moderators many thanks
If you can't post in the correct section you are unlikely to know where the search button is either...

This is incorrect.
If you have root you can still update via PCCompanion or SUS, but you will lose root.
If you have an unlocked bootloader then you cannot use official tools such as PCCompanions or SUS, you can only use EMMA (Official tool from Sony for unlocked bootloaders)

You will be able to use PCCompanion once the update becomes available for you, they are not all released at the same time, it can roll out over a month or two.
In the meantime, you can flash a FTF using flashtool from flashtool.net and there is no need for root. It is just a repackage of an official download and made avaialable for all.
Find them in the FTF mega collection thread.... Use the search button.

[Q] Reverting to stock

I've been running non-stock firmwares (Cyanogenmod etc), but now I want to revert to stock. First I tried using PC companion, but it said something about my phone running modified software and did not want to have anything with it to do.
Then I installed what was supposed to be a "stock" FTF via Flashtool. Got what seems to be a stock rom, but I notice that the "software updates" app does not find anyting. None of those updates to walkman, album etc.
Tried PC companion again now that I was running "stock" firmware, but it still says I'm running modified software. Any takers on how to revert to a clean stock?

Please goto
settings/about phone
and then tell me what it says in the kernel
If you have flashed a FTF you will be on stock because FTF means stock, there is no such thing as a Non-Stock FTF
However, your bootloader will still be unlocked so you shoule not accept OTA updates and PCCompanion will not work.
In order to use PCCompanion you should restore your TA backup (This will relock your bootloader) and then PCComapanion will work

Can't remember anything about a TA backup.

It wont, as this is a XDA development, Sony's official position is that once you unlock you cannot relock officially

That's not an official relock, there is no official relock, that was said on the official website
However, all over the XDA forums you are advised to make a TA backup before unlocking the bootloader, without pccompanion will never work for you.
You may as well leave your bootloader unlocked for ever..
Now.
If you want the latest stock firmware, just flash a FTF ending in 757 that is suitable for your phone
You will be on the latest release and this is how you will have to update from now on.
You should be aware of this from this page which is the official Sony warning about unlocking the bootloader.
Ok. Thanks for the answer. Not exactly what I hoped for, but I'll just flash the latest FTF's from now on.

Can't install OTA update

Hey, so my phone was on a custom ROM for some time now and I just recently went back to stock by flashing an .ftf file with FlashTool.
Since I wanted to go very sure that I take the right file to flash, I chose one with the firmware version 12.1.A.0.266 because I didn't find a newer one, I trusted, thinking I could update it to 12.1.A.1.207 via Update Center then. The flashing process went flawless but the thing is that I couldn't update my phone.
I go into the Update Center, click on download (it's the newest 12.1.A.1.207 firmware) and afterwards on install. The phone shuts down and for 4 or 5 seconds the screen shows the normal animation it always shows, when updating firmware.
After these 4 or 5 seconds it reboots normally and I get the alert that installation is not possible. I tried it a hundred times via PC Companion as well but it always says that I have modified software and it can't be updated.
I also reset my phone thinking this could solve the issue but it didn't and now I don't know what to do. I don't really want to flash an .ftf file again because I'm always a bit anxious when flashing something.
If you have an idea on how to solve my problem I'd be very thankful
Anyone?
