I have a weird problem with my AT&T galaxy tab. For the past couple of days, each time I launch the Market, my 3G connection is killed and I can no longer access the network, and of course I cannot access the market. As soon as I kill the market app, my 3G connection comes back.
I cleared the data and cache of the market app, did not solve the issue. When I uninstall the updates of the market app (reverting to the original ugly market app), everything works fine, but it then automatically updates itself and the problem comes back. I assume this is a problem with the market app itself and not my device (hopefully).
Has anybody else experienced this issue and found a fix?
I am running stock ROM with third party apps installed enables (done it with superoneclick: root, enable third party apps, unroot).
I have the amazon app store installed, so I can still buy new apps, but I would like to be able to get updates for the apps I have purchased from the market.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
What modem are you using? Does the problem happen when you are using wifi? I think the JMF modem that is available for overcome rom is weak and I get many dropped connections and slow data speeds.
I am using the stock ROM and stock modem, I have never flashed a ROM. It only happens with the Market App.
Same issue for me. I have a rooted stock rom.
I have the same issue. Also stock rom and rooted. When WIFI is on (and connected) the market works fine.
I have been beating my head against this since I bought one. I am rooted using....I think I used Super One Click......stock everything else with non-market apps enabled. I originally thought that Root had broken it; however, if I unrooted, reset to factory, I still had the issue.
After many hours at the ATT store and on the phone (and swapping the device once and SIM card twice) I had an epiphany. a Factory Reset does NOT wipe the Internal SD like I thought it did. It leaves /mnt/sdcard/ intact. So, just for kicks, I began looking at my folders here. I MAY have discovered something. Market started working after I restored this folder to it's factory content (deleted any folders having to do with Apps in general).
I can typically hold power, deactivate Data connection, wait a few seconds, re-enable, and I get 3g back (at least for browser and other apps, Market still fails).
I have PSX4Droid installed (PSX Emulator if you don't know). There is a folder here named /.psx4droid, so I renamed it to /psx4droid (If I remember correctly, doesn't the "." hide the folder......too long since Linux class). I then deactivated/reactivated my data, and the Market started working properly.
I am not sure if it has to do SPECIFICALLY with psx4droid or just the "Hidden" folder in general, but now my Market works. I have 2 more folders in this location (/.downloadTemp and /.FileExpert) that may/may not cause any problems. I will post my findings.
.....Okay, so I'm going to type what I write now....Market just failed. Now I'm renaming /.FileExpert....Let's see what happens......
Damn. Still fails. But I'm tellin' ya. There is something in this folder causing it.
Or maybe some app is causing it to break......I have Amazon App store installed, what about you guys?
I do have Amazon App installed.
Anybody with an AT&T Tab not having the issue?
Same issue here. I had the Amazon Appstore installed but uninstalled it probably a week afterwards. Rooted running stock, everytime I go into the market it crashes the 3g. I found a folder in sdcard/android/data that had a bunch of appstore files in it. I deleted that and still having the same issue. I have removed all 3rd party apps so I have no idea what is triggering this. Please help.
P.S. I can access the market on WiFi
This also happens to be sometimes, if you tap wifi on then off again your 3g should come back and work fine.
swyped from a galaxy far far away...
Unfortunately what you proposed did not work. The market is killing the network connection each and every time. The network connection only comes back when the market app is not active anymore.
Since everything works fine when the market upgrades are uninstalled, I really think it is a bug in the newer version of market. Hopefully, the next update will fix this.
Maybe when Gingerbread is out!
I'm thinking this has more to do with us having installed amazon appstore before it was supposed to be. Somebody is mad at us
Has anyone made any progress on this situation?

I really wish I would have made more progress. After all the trouble I had with the device with this issue, I was seriously monitoring the apps I installed and then testing the Market. I gave up after a while since I am on Wifi 90% of the time and hardly ever do I access the Market while driving. I still have a feeling that something in /mnt/sdcard is causing it. Like I had mentioned, I could wipe back to factory and the problem was still there. I seem to remember that it only started working proper after I had cleared this location of crap. I would think that a Market update would see a larger group of affected tabs than just a handful of us. This doesn't seem to be a widespread issue.
That being said......I have decided to move on to Gingerbread. Maybe that'll fix it
Hey guys, try this. Worked for me and my Data problems with Gingerbread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13751694&postcount=6
Basically create a new APN inside Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. Only set the APN to "Broadband," save it (Menu button) and select the radio button for it. Instantly fixed my data issues.
Thank for the tip. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. I am running stock 2.2 and waiting for the official 2.3 update from AT&T.
Good Luck. I thought about waiting for the official.....but I also have a Captivate. We didn't get 2.2 until MONTHS after the rest of the world (I think it was like 5 or 6 months later). I didn't want to wait that long again.

Could you please report if the problem fixed with Gingerbread ?
At first I didn't have ANY cellular data until I created a new APN mentioned in the tagged thread (APN Broadband). Now I have no issues with Market. I wish I could trust AT&T to release Gingerbread in a timely fashion, but I know better. So instead, I flashed Overcome.
P.S. I really can't enough of the CRT lock animation......damn I'm such a geek....
So, as topic states, absolutely everything that might use data is disabled, and of course the most important one, main switch for "data enabled/disabled". Also switched on 2G-only at the moment. But still, it seems my "cost counter" is creeping upward slowly, and no calls made, nothing.
Anyone else noticed anything like this? And since I'm currently on a "General Plan" and not a "Internet" one, data is much more expensive so this isn't good, mildly put.

what the hell... more and more bugs... by the minute.. sucks
Just install APNdroid. It should solve your problem and you don't need to turn off any of those settings.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.code.apndroid&feature=search_result
That program dosent look to promising,
I had the same problem as you, but i managed to somehow corrected it, i uninstalled goggle maps with titanium backup and then i disabled data roaming i then downloaded an app that could tell which programs that where going on the net, and as for now i have only used around 50mb in the past days , and it havent risen without me using the phone for net things.

Sadly, APNDroid can easily be "corrected" by most carriers. And about maps, well, i want maps :C And as noted _everything_ is disabled that might even relate to using data.
No problems here. Been in Belgium and Germany, so It should have been romaing... but nothing happend...
why is it not promising? i am using APN onoff, and i think it works pretty well. They directly changed your apn name in the setting, which mean there is no way you can connect to your data, so you are safe from unwanted data download/upload.
I found out That maps have nothing to do with the data, but i dont dare turn on data roaming.. to the apn program, i dont like what the reviews says about it, and i dont want a third party program to turn off the data connection

Hi, I wonder if anybody can help me. Up until the day before yesterday I was using whatsapp fine over wifi (where I am at the moment there is no mobile signal) on my O2 UK Z1 and then whatsapp lost all connection. Everything else on the phone was working fine but no whatsapp. Every message I sent would go to the clock, no information when people were last online and the faq etc. in the settings would not load because of lack of connection.
I uninstalled the app and then installed it again and all was fine, after sending a few messages the same error occurred again. I have now found that if I clear data in the app settings it will connect again, once I have reconfigured the app and restored from backup. I can only assume that there is some sort of buffer which I am clearing as I lose a few messages when I clear data (all since last backup).
Barring doing a delete of all backups and messages does anyone have any other idea. I have looked and the backup files are about 1.7mb so not massive and I have a fair bit of storage available onboard (>7gb).
I was talking to someone with a HTC phone who had suffered similar symptoms but I have googled and searched and can't find a solution.
Any help much appreciated.
Mark
2 weeks off work and no issues, as soon as I have returned the issue has reared it's head so looks like it's something to do with the wifi here. Everything else works fine and fast so I guess I'll just have to live with it

A factory reset for a cheap Whazz, huge work buddy...lol... at last it's an idea but I will try reinstall mobile settings before that or uninstall and reinstall Whatsup.
I work in a very remote location, I have wifi (which is distributed from a satellite feed) out here and for my mobile phone that is the only connection option. When I am away from work whatsapp always works, both over wifi and cellular data. At work I keep my phone in aeroplane mode with wifi turned on to try and preserve some battery (there is no point in my phone constantly looking for a non existent cellular signal).
This morning I deleted all messages in whatsapp, uninstalled the app and re-installed/configured. Usually I get a failure within 24 hours of doing this so we'll see whether this rectifies the issue.
I know I'm not the only person out here that has had the issue so it is either a coincidence or something with the way the wifi is configured here. I just assumed that the wifi would either work or not but, I am not an expert.
I have had my Turbo for a week now and so far I am loving it.
However I am having a very strange issue. I started downloading GTA:SA from the google play store the other day. I was home so I was connected to wifi, the play store even prompted and I selected the option to only download over wifi. However about half way through the download I started getting data usage notifications from Verizon. It seems as though the Turbo is somehow using data when connecting to wifi. The strange thing is that the data usage section in Android settings don't show any spikes or data usage out of the ordinary.
Currently the data usage section shows only 0.5GB of data used since I got the phone (about 9.2GB on wifi). However according to Verizon tracking I have used nearly 5GB!!
Has anyone else run into this issue?
Edit: I ended up getting in touch with Verizon tech support. They can't seem to determine what is going on either, they could see that I was connected to wifi when the data usage was occurring. They opened a ticket with their engineering team on this and said they would let me know what they find. I will update this thread when I hear back from them
Would still be interested to know if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

While I am sure that you thought your comment was in some way helpful or relevant, maybe next time you should stick to complaining in a thread specifically for that.
I now remember why I stopped posting to these forums in the past.
I maybe having the same issue. I received my first data usage limit text a few days ago. At first I thought it was due to my other line being used by my daughter but she has been in a Wi-Fi only area so it has to be on me. I'm always on Wi-Fi when I'm home and that's where I received the data usage notification. I ended up adding 2gb just to get me through a couple of days. Let me know what technical support says. I'd really appreciate it.

I will let you know. They said they would follow up with me at the end of my billing cycle (the 15th).
I have been trying to reproduce the issue so I can provide them more information about when it is happening but it seems intermittent. When I called they did upgrade my plan to 10GB (from 2GB) for the rest of the month and credited my account for the difference to get me through my billing cycle so that might be worth it to give them a call. Also, if more people report an issue they might look a little deeper into it.
If you call I would recommend using this number, 866-221-4096. That is the direct line to their tech support. That way you don't have to go through the stupid basic troubleshooting that their tier 1 techs make you go through.
Thanks for the info. I'll call tech support tomorrow so that we have additional visibility.

I have been having a similar issue, I've been having these small amounts of data being used while on wifi. went to the verizon store after speaking with a person over the phone. Lady on the phone said that it was normal... :/....so I went into the store. Guy said it might be an app but I've never heard of anything using data while being on wifi!
Store guy asked how I could prove it, and most of the data happens to me around 11:00pm-5am while im at home asleep!
He insisted on hard reset and to test the apps out, trying to avoid that tho. Maybe I'll have better luck with that number you posted.
At least it not just me!
Update... I spoke with tech support this morning. The support specialist was extremely helpful. She noted that there were several other complaints specific to the data leakage and idle battery drain (both of which I deal with). She ran a remote diagnostic on my hand set and found that I was running with only 18% of available RAM left. She said there is definitely something running in the background that is taking up significant resources and possibly data, but when she checked my phone she could see that I have turned off virtually all extraneous apps and that there is no way the phone should be working that hard. Motorola has been made aware of the data leakage issue and it's expected to be addressed with a software update in the next few weeks. The idle battery drain may be tied to this as well. During my 10 minute call to tech support, I burned through 3% battery which tech support stated was too much. I may swap this device and see if my problem continues with another Turbo.
I also had the data leakage issue while connected to WiFi. It happened my first day, and because my plan was pro-rated to the rest of the billing cycle and it was near the end of the billing cycle, I quickly blew through what was left of my allotment. The Verizon rep on the phone switched me to the non-prorated allocation for the last few days of the cycle.
I haven't seen data leakage since. I wonder if the Motorola Migrate app is what burned through data. Did everyone else here use that?

It is good to hear that they have had other complaints. I was thinking about trying to swap mine too, I have the 32GB in black kevlar. Wouldn't mind going to the 64GB but for some reason I just can't decide if I am going to like the Ballistic Nylon.

I did not use the migrate app myself. That was actually one of the apps that I disabled pretty early on so I don't believe that was the cause of the data usage in my case.
Strange as it sounds I am glad to hear that more people are having the issue, at least this way I know I am not crazy.
Hopeful we will hear something semi-official from Verizon or Motorola on this soon.
I got off the phone with a tech guy at lunch, he was telling me that they hadn't had anyone else report this issue :/ he also said that apps that run in the background will still use data instead of wifi while connected to wifi which doesn't sound right to me, though i've never had to manage my data so closely before.
does that make sense to anybody else?

Sounds, to me like he had no idea what he was talking about. I have never had an android phone use data like this when connected to wifi. What number did you try calling?
As I mentioned before I was getting similar responses from their tier 1 support. This number goes straight to their higher level tech support, 866-221-4096. I would recommend giving that a try if you haven't already. If you did try that number I would personally try calling back to get someone else. Not all support techs are created equal.

That was the number I called, I might try again later today.
So just to be clear if im on wifi even background data consuming apps shouldn't be using my data right? I would never had thought that before but that's 2 verizon "techs" that have told me now that apps will still use data in the background while connected to wifi. Sounds retarded to me

I have been running android phones on Verizon for over 5 years and I have never had an issue with data usage before. While I guess it is possible that an app could connect over cellular while wifi is on, it has never been an issue before for me at least.
I did find this post on verizons forums.
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/821949?start=0&tstart=0
Looks like other people have been having similar issues and Verizons response is simply to "check your data usage and disable anything running in the background". Really hoping we get more of a response then that.
I also wanted to upload some screen shots of this issue so others could see exactly what we are talking about. Before I got the Turbo on the 2nd. I had around 400MB used on my data plan. Currently I am at over 7GB used, however the android data usage tells a different story.
I'm having a similar issue
When i activated my phone last week, I was on wifi as it was restoring all of my apps. I can't remember if i had started the motorola migrate app or not, but within the course of 5 minutes, i got a txt for 50% data usage warning and then 75% data usage... my account claims that i used 1.1 gigs of data during that time, but my phone only showed ~100MB during the first day of activation (actually, mobile + wifi usage during that initial day was only ~500MB).
I talked with the service rep over the weekend (i guess not a real tech support guy) but he couldn't tell me much. My cycle ends tomorrow, and I just increased my data plan from 4 to 6GB for $10 less a month through a customer loyalty thing, so i figured I would be set and that the initial issue was a fluke... today, though, i checked again to compare Verizon's accounting vs. my phone's and they are reporting another ~300MB over what my phone says (Not including that initial 1.1GB spike).
Now, i'm ~100MB from my plan limit, so for today i've just turned off mobile data completely... will be interested to see if their number goes up mysteriously when i'm definitely not using mobile data.
Hopefully this is something that gets fixed relatively quickly with a patch as someone else on the forum mentioned....
This is a strange issue for sure. Good luck to those of you that have this problem. Although both my wife and I are using more data than we normally do so far (which isn't uncommon with a new phone) both of our usages match up within a few MB on our phones and MyVerizon. We did not use the Moto Migrate thing but we did both sign into the VZW Cloud app for the first time. I disabled most of my bloat, but she didn't disable any of hers so that doesn't seem to be a factor.

I think I got some clarity on this issue. I was having the same problem, 4G LTE data being used even though I was connected to wifi. I called the techs at Motorola and was told that this phone does not stop 4G data from being used when wifi is connected. They said you have to manually turn off mobile data to have data ran through only the wifi. They told me to download an app called wifi matic from the play store which would do this automatically whenever wifi was connected. I told them in the 6 years I have had android phones it has always been done automatically. The guy told me it all depends on how the phone is setup and that the turbo was not designed this way. Is it just me or it that not completely ludicrous? We as users have to turn off our mobile data when connecting to wifi just so data doesn't get used on both? I'm beyond frustrated especially because this wasn't disclosed. I ran through my entire 2GB data allotment with Verizon in 8 days because of this.
I called Verizon and explained the situation. They are upping my data for the month and I'll install the app Motorola recommended to prevent this from happening in the future. It's just really frustrating I had to go through all this to find out Motorola dropped the ball.
I always do that anyhow. I figured everyone did. so reading this thread I thought y'all were saying your phones were using data when you had data turned off. I was starting to get worried.
I'm calling BS on that explanation because there are people not experiencing this issue at all. For example, I have had a few VERY heavy data days while I spent the entire day at home and neither android nor VZW say that I used any of my data plan on those days.

I have been going through and optimizing my T813 by disabling stuff that doesn't need to be running, firewalling off anything that does need network access, etc. However, I've run into a couple odd issues.
The first is DRParser.apk (DRparser Mode). It is marked as safe to disable on the Galaxy S6/S7, and I have. Or at least I tried. Even when it is frozen, it is somehow getting started because it is banging at the firewall like nuts. I have AFWall+ setup to show toasts from the logger, and it is constantly showing DRparser Mode has been denied access to a half dozen IP addresses. I double checked, and yes, it really is disabled in Titanium Backup. There is some serious WTH going on here, as it persists after a reboot. I have used TiBu to successfully freeze other services, so I'm not sure what is so special about this one.
The other weird one is mDNS, which I believe is part of the "find stuff nearby" functionality. I don't actually have a problem with it, but I can't find a specific service to enable in the firewall. I'm guessing it's bundled with something else, but I'm not sure what. It's also getting flag by AFWall, but not nearly as often.
The last one is the game optimizer service. I'm not sure why it is trying to access the network, but it is. I'm tempted to freeze it, but I'm not sure what it actually does.
Anyone have any ideas on these?

I can't even find anything via google that even explains what this apk does. But I did find that the app associated with it is com.sec.android.app.parser. You might want to look for that in /Setup/apps. Once you open apps, you might have to click the settings and choose "show system" for it to appear in the list. I'm running the RR ROM on my T810 and that app isn't installed with the Pico gapps, so I can't test it.
edit: After a little more research, it appears that the apps function is to decode "special codes" that you dial on your phone. Without it, you won't be able to dial those codes. But I have no idea why that would require access through your firewall. But it would explain why it isn't found on my T810, which doesn't have a cellphone function.
This is on a T813, which also has no LTE functionality. I'm guessing Samsung puts a largely "standard" image on these devices, as it also has the Phone services as well. (from poking around, this thing feels a bit like a gigantic Galaxy S6). However, it's a moot issue, as it is lumped under a bunch of other stuff, at least a couple of which do require network access. So, whatever it is, I have to let it through. :|
I did, however, come across some info on the mDNS issue:

Apparently that is a strange AFWall+ issue, and there is a custom script to resolve the issue.

This is on a T813, which also has no LTE functionality. I'm guessing Samsung puts a largely "standard" image on these devices, as it also has the Phone services as well. It may be "lumped with other stuff" but I would think that "the stuff" would all be phone related and therefore removable. It isn't there in the custom ROMS. Did you look for the app I listed in your app settings?
Yes, it's there. DRParser.apk in /system/app. I can, if I need to, delete it now that I have a full system backup on the SD card - which I suppose is the next step. I usually disable services rather than deleting them, though.

Renaming or deleting the apk is an option, but I was talking about disabling com.sec.android.app.parser in the app settings.
